Just moved up from Denver and have been searching for a replacement for the regulars: blue bonnet, Benny's and La fogata. We've tried Efrain's and a couple others in Boulder and not too impressed. We found Wapos off the beaten path and really enjoyed it. Very low key environment, with quality food and very friendly owners. One of the owners was waiting tables and bartending when we were dining and was still extremely attentive despite a full restaurant. We will be back! read more

This review is kind of tricky, because there were aspects of our experience I would give four or five stars, then others I would give less than three. After reading great reviews of Wapo's on here, my boyfriend and I decided to take the little one and give it a try. They have a cute, warm little space inside, and what looked like a big patio area (it was chilly, so we didn't check that out). Most of the tables in the little restaurant were full, and our server seemed to be the only one on shift, so things took a while to get going. While looking at the menu, we saw that they have not only a regular hour happy hour, but also a late happy hour from eight until nine. It was just around eight, so we were pleased to find this out. He ordered a two dollar beer, and I ordered a four and change mojito. It turned out not to actually be a mojito, as it had no mint in it. It tasted like it was a small amount of white rum, sour mix, and was largely Sierra Mist. Disappointing. Our server was really nice, though, and busy, as I said, so I didn't want to complain. For our meals, the little one ordered kids bean and cheese nachos, the man ordered spinach enchiladas, and I ordered veggie tamale. We're all vegetarians and were pleased by the large selection of veg food. Food comes, everything is delicious! There's one bite of my tamale left. This is when I see something inside of it that I can't identify. It's the color of refried beans, but the texture of...do you remember Spam? It was the texture of Spam. I ask my boyfriend what it is. He doesn't know. He tastes it, says he doesn't think it's meat because it's pretty tasteless. I'm very uncomfortable at this point. Should I ask the waiter? The boyfriend says no, don't, you're practically done anyway. I figure if it's meat, I'll know by getting violently ill as I haven't eaten meat in two decades. I didn't get violently ill, so that's cool, but I'm still turned off by the thought of something unidentifiable in my food. We got flan for dessert, delicious! Really, really great flan. Perfect texture and sweetness. The waiter was very sweet, talked a lot to my son, and addressed my boyfriend by name after he paid. I suppose I would give this place another shot, as the food was really good despite the mystery ingredient. And I would order a different drink! Maybe the margaritas are better. read more

We love Wapos! It's a bit of a schlep from where we live in East Boulder (but everything is close-ish in Boulder). Don't be fooled by the exterior and proximity to the Bus Stop. The margaritas and sangria are awesome, the owner is exceptionally friendly and accommodating, and the food is spectacular. read more

What an awesome find! Excellent food and great service. Chips and salsa were great, the salsa was nice and spicy with big chunks of onion and cilantro. We also ordered the chili con queso which you could tell was real cheese, yum!! For drinks we had coin style margaritas (they do pitchers!). Dinner included enchiladas chili verde with carnitas (I'm picky with enchiladas and these were delicious) and a chimichanga. We will be back very soon! Wapos was nothing but the most disappointing eating experience. The worst tex-mex food I have ever had in my entired life. Even thought the waiter was very nice, THE MANAGER, was intense, agressive and absolutely inappropiate. My daughter asked for "queso fundido" , the menu says it was made with pepper jack cheese but when it came out was a VELVITA cheese. I was disgusted by the idea of being in a so called Mexican restaurant eating microwaved velvita.. Politely, I asked our waiter what kind of cheese was it?- I continued: because that does not look, nor taste as a pepper jack or monterrey... he said let me ask.. I added: it actually looks like a velvita. The guy politely took away the dish and told us it would replace it. The manager came right away, and almost screaming said this is what it is in the menu, it is not "what you said it is" ... he was screaming that at us while he was walking with some orders for other table. after delivering the plates at the other table, he came to us and told me, it looks like that because they mix the cheese and the chorizo and the other ingredients, you are wrong, it is not velvita. (speaking out loud) I felt like offended and embarrased... the new queso fundido looked white, but it was like microwaved American cheese, it had that texture, it had that smell, it had the appearance. Well, I am not mexican but I know about eating well, authentic mexican food, even no so authentic mexican food with some touches of moderm cuisine but.. still good food. Let me tell you, this is not a good place to eat. I want to set appart any sentiment (embarrasement or disappointment) in this review to make it fair and objective: here are my points: 1. Food, not authentic, 2. Menu says one thing but they serve you another thing 3. Enviroment.. unsanitary, it was dirty and dark, there were dirty dishes just right in the door that leads you to the patio. 4. The plates, were not well washed, I took a picture but I do not have it available right now.. ( I might add it later) 5. The manager, so lack of professionalism and ethic and very inappropiate. 6. Over priced for what they are serving. 7. There was not an apology from the manager_ the waiter was a very nice and sweet boy. read more

Okay so - the service is beyond great at this place. The food? Well ... It was good, but not fantastic. The service is really what gives this place that fourth star. The price tag about knocked it down to a 3, but the service was really that good. read more

I am not so sure why this restaurant has so many good reviews. The food is one of the worse Mexican food I have ever had. We ordered enchiladas. Be aware that if you order pork, you will be charged additional money for it. I am not sure why this is the case. The menu does not make this fact clear. The prices are absolutely outrageous for a restaurant whose bathrooms have holes all over the walls. The female bathroom is horrible. We have been living in Boulder for over 14 years. There are so many other places in Boulder to have good food this place shouldn't even rank. read more

ECarne Asada was really good and so was my wife's steak fajitas . The sopapillas were tasty. Very friendly and fast service ! Atmosphere reminds of some of the restaurant I went to growing up as a kid in SoCal. Overall a great experience ! Will definitely go back again. read more

Wapos is a small cozy mexican restaurant tucked in a block or so North of Leehill on the left side of N Broadway. The food is good and quite reasonable. The chicken fajita was brought steaming to the table with a variety of side dishes; sour cream, cheese, salsa, guacamole, etc. The Mango drink was generous in size and tasty. This place was excellent! We had margaritas, a combination platter and the pregnant burrito. The service was excellent and the atmosphere was great. Prices were reasonable and the portion sizes were just right. Can't wait for the patio to open up and I think the next time I attend will be on a Tuesday for 99 cent tacos. read more

We come here all the time, and the owner is very friendly and accommodating to us and our 2-year-old son. The fish tacos are great, and so are the other menu items that we've tried. The restaurant has a homey, down-to-earth feel, with any airs of pretentiousness stripped away. It's hard to find good, authentic Mexican food in Boulder, but this is one of our favorite places, and we keep coming back. read more

I have now been to this establishment twice. First time was a very quiet evening. Our group, about 20, were the only people in there. They were not able to split checks which created a bit of chaos when we were trying to pay out. The next time, we were another large group seated outside. The check situation improved but everything else was worse. The server, while pleasant, was very overwhelmed. We went to the bar for individual drinks to try and relieve his burden and were turned away! Food came out cold and at all different times. Non-complicated food items took almost two hours in some cases. There was mention that the kitchen had run out of food? The server did his best and even offered to buy drinks for the table out of his own pocket, but there was some seriously lack of organization happening at this restaurant. The owner never came by or offered help. Very disappointing experience. For fairly expensive margaritas you would expect to get a little more. Went to Wapos last night and was disappointed. Waiter was inattentive and the food was so-so. Had the Burrito Supreme and was delivered with tasteless and watery green chili. The chili made the whole burrito soggy-bad. They forgot the guac and sour creme and since the waiter did not show up I had to go to the bar to get it. The waiter never came back for our drink order. Also, both dishes were almost cold when served, since the waiter did not return, could not ask them to heat it up. read more

We found Wapos through Yelp as we were trying to find an adequate substitute for the late, lamented Juanita's, home of the most excellent blue corn enchiladas. While Wapos does not have blue corn enchiladas, they do have pretty yummy Mexican food! We arrived on a weeknight ahead of the dinner rush and had a seat in the outdoor patio area. It took a while to place our drink and dinner order but once things were in, it was great from there on (in fairness, our s server looked to be the only on duty). My dh ordered the pregnant burrito, and this being Boulder, didn't have any issue getting his green chile sans pork. He was very happy with this meal! I ordered the special of fajitas, opting to pay a tiny bit extra for the combo of beef & chicken. There was seriously enough meat for two people, I wound up with a take home box but it was so tasty! The salsa that is served as you're seated was really yummy, with a bit more of a kick than a lot of places are willing to serve up. The chips were ok and the margarita was pretty decent as well.
