I have had the worst experiences with Wardle's and just want to warn others. In June 2024, as a brand new chicken owners, I bought 3 Rhode Island Red hens from them. I was not able to go into the coop with the sales associate so he just went in, grabbed whatever three hens he could get and put them in my carrier. When I got home and took them out, I noticed one could barely walk. I tried to give her some rescue 911 electrolytes in her water and access to food thinking maybe getting scooped up and put in a box and then being in a car for 15 minutes was a stress on her nervous system and she just needed some time to acclimate. I called Wardle's to tell them what happened and asked if I could switch her for another hen. The manager told me no because she could be sick... even though that meant they had just sold me a sick chicken. She struggled for weeks. We had to keep her in a separate coop and spent countless dollars on a ton of different supplements trying to figure out what was wrong with her and to keep her alive. Finally we tried Vitamin B12 and after a few days of it in her water, she able to walk normally. Although she was always a pretty sickly chicken and not even a year later we found her dead in the coop one morning (no sign of attack or any injuries). Fast forward to September of 2025. We wanted to get a few chicks to raise and integrate with our flock. Against my better judgement, we went back to Wardle's to get chicks. They only had 4 week olds and again, we weren't allowed in the room where the brooders were to pick the ones we wanted so we just told the associate how many and which breeds. We got 3 gold laced Wyandottes, a Rhode Island Red and a Barred Rock. I looked in the box and noticed one of the hens had a pretty big comb. I asked if that was normal because we definitely didn't want a rooster. They assured me it was a hen. 3 months later, our "hen" has started crowing. We can't have roosters in Lakewood so now we have to find someone to take him or cull him. It breaks my heart. Of note, since then we have ordered chicks from McMurray and Meyer's Hatchery and had really healthy, beautiful, hens. Not a single rooster. I would highly recommend ordering from a hatchery over buying any chickens from Wardle's! read more

I decided to check this place out as an alternative to buying elsewhere for some of our supplies. Staff is very friendly and helpful, the prices were a little higher than I expected but somewhat reasonable. It's not terribly far from me so I think I'll be back again when I need to restock. One thing I wish they had was a more accessible price list available to the customers instead of waiting for them to go to the register every time a price check was made. read more

‼Detipped beaks‼. I've never left a review but the situation is bad enough that it is necessary this time. When they gave me my two Australorp pullets I wasn't able to get a look at them before they were in the kennel. When I brought them home I notice their beaks had been detipped. A very cruel practice done to prevent pecking when keeping chickens in neglectfully small enclosures. Then I realized they had a cough, one has continued to become very ill over the last month but unfortunately regardless of if your flock shows symptoms or not once they are exposed this type of respiratory illness it never fully goes away. It can be managed sometimes with antibiotics that require you to throw out eggs for two weeks afterwards and the medication is generally at minimum $50. I would not recommend and never will again personally purchase from them, they severely neglect their animals and now from reading the comments have a history of animal abuse that they vehemently deny despite clear evidence of it. If you care about animal cruelty and lying then I would stay far far away. I would have loved to support a small family business unfortunately they do not shepherd their animals or their morals very well. I can only pray the lord puts an end to the suffering of these poor animals. read more

Finally! Chicken season is upon us. I purchased a brooder kit from Wardle. It was more expensive than I could have gotten from other places, but I wanted to buy from experienced people who know their stuff. getting support from Amazon is impossible and we're building community, so the extra money I spent is staying local and back into our community. I began to set things up, and noticed the person helping me out forgot to bring out the bag of feed and pine shavings. I sent anmessage through the contact form, and had a response apologizing and Jennifer took care of me immediately. No questions asked. I love the trust she has in her customers. Friday, the new chicks arrived, I showed up, explained my missing items, two gentlemen loaded the two bags directly and carefully into my car. My kids and I picked out chicks, and we were all set! I'm so thankful a business like this exists. They're responsive, love their animals AND their customers. Can't wait to go back! read more

I was looking for chickens and saw Wardle on a search. I like that they are a local, small business and I prefer that over the chain stores. We came on a Monday after looking at their website about when their chicks would be available. We purchased some feed and all the equipment for keeping chicks, but had to hold off on buying the chicks while we waited for our chicken permit to be approved by the city. Later that day, our permit was approved and we headed back to Wardle to get our chicks. The staff was so knowledgeable and helpful on answering all our questions about species of chicks, their temperaments, and how many eggs they lay. Their pricing is very reasonable and competitive so you don't need to shop around. read more

I'm a regular for propane, duck food and hay. They are ALL wearing masks - could be that they value thier customers? The cost of propane is lower than others but that's not why I go there. They come under the heading of "good people." There is a competitor close by who don't care about customer safety - they don't wear masks. Wardle's offers service as it used to be in days long gone. So we got 6 chicks, so far they are doing well, however, 3 of them are not what we wanted. Not sure if they just shove whatever they have most of in a box and send you on your way or not. Or maybe they are just sloppy, who knows. For example, we asked for a Barred Rock and ended up with what appears to be a Black Sex Link. The color of the egg will be close to the same but the actual chicken looks nothing like what we wanted. They gave us what they said was a Maran, so far it looks like an easter egger! I guess I will not know for sure until they lay, but not really best practice to do the old bait and switch on customers. read more

I have gotten 8 chickens from Wardle over 2 years and have never had any issues. They have sexed rabbits I have bought at other places. Always carry out all my grains and feed which no other store has ever done for me. Def the best feed store I've been to in the last 10 years read more

This is a extremely late review, but better late than never. We got chicks from Wardle's last Spring as well as 3 pullets. Or, at least, they were claiming that these birds were pullets. My husband bought them not really knowing much about chickens, he trusted that the folks at Wardle's would be fair. When he got home (we live about 3 hours South of WR), I immediately said that these chickens -- not pullets -- were old. One died within the first week; the others lived for a little while but another died in late July - she actually did lay for a while so it was sad to see her go. She was ill - always had diarrhea even with probiotics in her water. There is one who is still around who hasn't once laid an egg but we keep her around, well, because we love our girls. The chicks are well into their 10th month with most of them laying; one still hasn't yet. I know chickens well enough to know that some stop producing in the winter, some molt, and what-not, and I know very well that we got HAD. Please don't sell old birds and call them pullets. They each cost $30 and I believe we're at a loss since they've been sick or never laid. So, thanks Wardle's... never again. read more

Also in my experience they always carry my bags out for me, and have been very conscientious about wearing masks. I really appreciate them still being open through COVID-19. They sell sick chickens and don't care. I'm a new chicken owner but not new to animals. I got a full size chicken from them, the gal looked her over and put her in a box. On the way home I could hear what sounded like coughing and sneezing. I called right away and the gal on the phone said that it was normal in transfer. So I let it go. The next day I went to trim nails and while holding her I could hear wet breathing and she was coughing. I called them back to return her since she was sick when I got her and they refused to take her back and told me that her coughing was normal when introduced to new bedding, then tried to sell me a product to help with the cough! These guys don't care about the chickens, will sell you sick birds and are ok lying to you. Don't spend you money here! read more

The moment you walk in someone will ask you if you need help finding something, and they'll know exactly where to point you even if you're not sure what you're looking for. There are no stupid questions with these folks, so whether you're an experienced farmer, rancher, urban homesteader, pet owner, or a newb at all of those, they are there to help. You're likely to be on a mission for something specific shopping here, but take the time to look around at all the cool stuff they have. HI! I have chickens! And ducks! And a bunny! And 3 cats! And a dog! This place had everything I need to keep my zoo happy. Best price on Timothy Hay, great healthy dog and cat food options, pigs ears (ew), and CHICKENS! Yes, adorable, fuzzy, cute, chirpy baby chicks. I've bought all my chickies from them and they have been wrong about the sex only once. That's pretty amazing. This place reminds you of what stores were like 50 years ago. Without all the, you know, lack of credit cards and social inequality. Go here and stop shopping at those horrible big chain stores for your pets. If you have a pet, you should really check out Wardle Feed. They sell really high quality dog, cat, bunny, bird and chicken supplies at the lowest prices I have seen in Denver yet. The first time I went in there I was actually looking for chicken feed. No, I do not have chickens, however the egg layer crumbles makes excellent, dust free, flushable cat litter (it's the exact same thing as World's Best Cat Litter at a FRACTION of the price). Because I was distracted by the "feed store" aspect of the place I hadn't even thought to look for cat food there. I was seriously blown away, they stock the best brands, Feliae, Avoderm, California Naturals and Chicken Soup among others, all at prices that are way way below petsmart and petco. There's only ever been the one guy working every time I have been in and he is really helpful and friendly. Do yourselves, your pets and this neat local business a favor and stop on by. They also have a recycling business out back so take your cans and do the environment a favor at the same time! read more

I have a big tortoise and I didn't need a huge bale of hay so the very kind man who works there gave me an empty bag and filled it with hay that was loose in the trailer. I can't express how gracious that was and I recommend this place to everyone! Such nice people who will help you. I've visited 3 feed stores in town ranging from the huge feed/western-wear variety to the mom & pop shopping mall kind and Wardle's is where I have always returned. While they don't know me by name, they know what livestock I have and what feed I want every time I arrive. Before I've said a thing, my chicken feed, straw bale or whatever else I need it loaded in my trunk. They're ready to offer advice and their recommendations for seasonal needs have always been spot-on in their recommendations. read more

I went here after having a less-than-positive experience getting chicks from another feed store. While I know sexed pullets come with a margin of error, it's a pain in the butt to get rid of a surprise roo. I called up Wardle's, and they connected me with their hatchery (a wonderful one-man show who helped me out). While we were there, they were extremely wonderful. We browsed the food selection and found a lot of great high-end foods we could feed our dog, all at decent prices. I was suitably impressed. I picked up two hens and a chicken coop for some backyard chickening. 200 for the coop and 30 per hen. Feeders and water jugs go for 15-30 a piece depending on plastic or stainless steel at this place. I just got mine from Amazon because it was cheaper. The guys working were helpful and told me some pointers. But 5 stars for the hens and the coop! The hens lay eggs and the coop keeps them safe from predators like my two dogs lol. read more

I bought a salmon favorelle that passed away a few days ago. After placing her in the kennel to bring her home from Wardle, she started to cough, and the young lady assisting us assured my boyfriend and I that this was "completely natural" and that "she'll be fine in a few days". Well, it wasn't fine. I went back in to ask the workers what I can medicate her with, and they gave me a bag of commercial sanitizer to put in her water?? I thought it was odd. Long story short, Sally the Salmon Favorelle passed away a few days ago, and now Dolly the Delaware now has a cough. The back ally where they keep the birds and rabbits is directly in the sun and runoff from fecal matter litters there pavement. They often place too many birds in each kennel. The donkey, horse, and goats live in rough conditions near the recycling center at the other end of the parking lot. The store associates are admittedly very nice, but I think they are often misguided in their advice regarding sick poultry. I hope they make improvements to the conditions the animals are kept in. read more

I didn't check the reviews on Wardle before I bought chicks there, and I wish I had, it would have saved me a lot of heartbreak and time. We've lost 3 out of 5 chicks we got in April 2017 to Mereks. They told me their chicks "get all the necessary vaccinations." I don't know who their suppliers are but I really don't think this is true. Do yourself a favor and stay away from Wardle! read more

Update 9/20/16: The store management is taking our issue much more seriously than the employees we dealt with. The breeder & their vet visited us today at our house to see our flock. To their credit, they're providing medicine and trying to make this right. While this whole thing has been frustrating, I appreciate the effort and am bumping up my review to 3 stars while we work on this. Original post: DO NOT BUY BIRDS HERE. We purchased two pullets to expand our backyard flock. It should have been a warning sign when the salesperson didn't know the breeds of the birds. After we got the pullets home we noticed one was sneezing. The store did refund our purchase but dismissed the bird's illness as "allergies" to my wife. It was not allergies- the rest of the chickens in my flock are all now sick, they've all stopped laying and have nasal discharge. I'm hoping I can save them with antibiotics, but may have to cull them. I'm incredibly disappointed in the lack of seriousness with which the staff treated this issue. These people should not be selling birds. read more
