My wife heard about Warung RieRie and its long wait time (6 months or more) but decided to put her name on the wait list anyway. We lucked out and got a call within 3 weeks because of a cancellation. We really enjoyed the experience, especially the conversation with Dave and Rie about their garden and the history of Warung RieRie. We love how they managed to ship the whole hut from Indonesia and fit it in their backyard as an intimate dining area. As for the food, we got a fixed six-course meal and a POG-like cocktail with two different types of rum that wet our appetites. Duck was the main course, and it was beautifully prepared with a light hoisin sauce. But my favorite was the fresh corn fritters that were fried perfectly and accompanied by a sweet and tangy sauce. Their price might not be for everyone. But if you want an intimate Indonesian fine dining experience, Warung RieRie will more than deliver. From the moment you walk through the door you are treated like family as you are escorted through the garden, where 80% of the produce you are served is grown and shown to the fire put where you wait the rest of the group. From there we were told the history of the restaurant and what inspired them to welcome complete strangers in to their home and share old family recipes. This was our first time at a warung, let alone a place where we were the only party in a beautiful structure that came from Indonesia! The husband greeted us and told us their story of how this came to be, and his wife was cooking each dish and came out at the end to chat with us. We were so impressed by the story and it's something you would need to come to hear and you will be awed. The food came out so beautifully plated. The cocktail we started with was tasty and they had a non-alcoholic drink for someone in our party. The appetizer was so delicious it came with peanut sauce that I have never tasted before, so good!! I had a reservation there, but at the last minute, they decided they were unwilling to accommodate my husband's allergies. I struggled a bit on whether to leave this review. Our friends went and had a good time, -- but ultimately, I think people with special dietary needs can use the information to decide on whether they should bother trying to go to this place. Our experience definitely "could've been better." I made a reservation, informing the chef of my husband's severe allergies. Aside from suggesting we go with the summer menu, she said they could accommodate his allergies. However, days before the reservation, after taking time out of our work days to go over the menu to identify any points of possible concern as she requested, and going over whether her planned substitutions are ok, and that we would not be concerned with cross contamination from equipment as long as things are washed with soap and water between uses, the chef and her husband decided they're unwilling to take the risk of serving us, and basically kicked us out of our own reservation, leaving our friends to go without us. This review would not be here if they had been honest and upfront and refused our reservation from the beginning. Based on other review (e.g., Mel L), we're not the only they're unwilling to accommodate. They may claim, and maybe even believe, they're doing it for the sake of the diner's health. However, we and other people with dietary restrictions know very well the risk of eating out and can decide for ourselves what is safe enough (and do it regularly). We weren't going to go through with the reservation if we thought for a second there's a good chance of an allergic reaction. To suggest they're doing it to protect us takes our agency away and implies they know better than us on what an acceptable level of risk is. Reading between the lines from what the chef's husband said to me, the risk they're unwilling to take is of anyone having a bad reaction and suing them. They have every right to decide who they are willing and unwilling to serve. But do us a favor and don't waste our time and ruin our plans for something we had no say over. PS. Very unprofessional. Would not recommend if you have food allergies/sensitivities because they might cancel at the last minute. They just canceled our appointment 5 days before the reservation even though they knew about our dietary restrictions months in advance when we first made the reservation. This dinner was to celebrate a birthday and my marriage engagement. When we first scheduled, they said that the entire summer menu was gluten free & no modifications were needed. They explained that they have gluten free sauces, and it wouldn't be a problem. The chef and I had a couple enjoyable and friendly conversations on the phone about how gluten friendly the menu was & she was happy to host our celebrations. Today, 5 days before our dinner, they asked for a deposit, but then followed up by saying they would recommend canceling if I had a severe gluten allergy because they would need new kitchenware. I explained that I wasn't Celiac, so cross contamination is ok. No new kitchenware needed. I eat out all the time and am ok as long as I avoid dishes with food/sauces with gluten. She called me 4 times at work today to pressure me to cancel, but she was very passive aggressive about it. She said I should consider canceling unless I wanted to risk my health. I said I'm fine with the cross contamination; I don't want to cancel my reservation. Then, she would loop back and say I should consider canceling because I'm risking my health. It went on all day. What is most unprofessional is the chef pivoting 5 days prior to the reservation and blaming it on me. I wish she could've just held up her promise for a GF dinner. I wish she would've been upfront when she decided to change her mind instead of this weird passive aggressive BS. Truly an amazing, unique experience with incredibly great service... oh, the food was pretty good too! There is only one table that seats up to 6 people. It is inside an authentic Balinese hut that was shipped and reassembled piece by piece, quite possibly the only one in North America. We were told 80% of the food served was grown in the garden that is right next to the hut. Unless you pick it off of the plant and put it into your mouth, it doesn't get any fresher. The meal includes a tour of said garden with a origin story of how the restaurant was conceived and came into being. We were served fresh rambutan with tropical drinks during the story telling. Such an interesting story. They change the menu every month (seasonal). This is gourmet cooking at its finest. Since you will likely get different food, I won't go into the details of each dish, but I enjoyed every last morsel of everything served, leaving every plate clean. There are many reasons why this is the toughest place in San Diego to get a reservation. My wife and I went to Warung RieRie for our anniversary last weekend and this place was far more than a restaurant; it was an experience. From the moment you step through the ornate gate, you feel as if you were stepping off the plane in Bali. Walking through rows of native dragonfruit trees, the area expands out with a view of myriad Indonesian plants. Dave explained the process of cultivating many of the ingredients for this truly authentic culinary experience. Farm to table. So cool. After drinks around a fire pit, we entered the warung and it was nothing short of breathtaking. We learned that the Warung was painstakingly taken apart in Bali and then shipped over in pieces to be reassembled here in San Diego. The most unique dining in San Diego. The pictures look impressive, but still don't do the overall vibe justice. As we sat there in awe, it was easy to see that there is nothing like it in California. But what was the best part of the entire evening? Hands down, the cuisine. Rie's dishes were spectacular. A five course meal that is the definition of 5 star. I came across this place on social media and told my hubby we HAVE to come here! When I first checked out their schedule, they had dates available. The next time I checked, they didn't have anything till next year! So, I got put on their waiting list and when Chef Rie messaged me, I didn't hesitate to book the dinner! I figured things happen and I called to find out what went wromg. They had the gall to claim that they have been calling and texting me multiple times and couldn't get a hold of me, so they cancelled. I have not a single record of a call or text from them. I got the cancellation notice, so they must have the right number. Shame on them for lying to me. It's understandable if you have to cancel for some reason, but not OK to lie about it. If they are worried about cancellations, they can handle it like every other nice restaurant- take credit card information and charge the person for a no-show. Terrible. I don't recommend a visit. This is hard for me to write, because the owners are sweet and we loved the concept. Warung RieRie would be a nice place to have an intimate dinner with some friends, but the value for the price (over $200 per person) isn't there. I saw other reviews and trusted their depictions but now wish I hadn't. The food was good. But, with a year-long waitlist and steep prices, we hoped to walk away talking about the creativity, presentation, uniqueness - anything exemplary. But the dishes were not elevated to the level we had hoped or paid for. We have been to a lot of wonderful restaurants around the world, and are no strangers to Indonesian food, so we left disappointed. The ambiance is quaint, and we had a nice time taking with the owners who were very sweet. Similar to the food, the location could be refined, made more elevated, more thought out, cleaned up a bit. Even though there was a 6 month wait, I was able to score a waitlist spot (expensive for a last minute booking but as chef rie says, if it's your time, it's your time!). See pictures for course by course details, but basically this was an amazing experience. It's pricy, but you're paying for a lot. It's a very private dining experience where you're literally one on one with the chef and her wonderful husband. Think a solo-cellar door type experience, except in an AMAZING Sumatran rice hut. This thing is epic and the whole vibe is amazing. They're booking about a year out, so check back frequently and plan ahead. They were talking about expanding the concept, which would be amazing in that they can give more people this experience, but maybe you'll lose the one-on-one experience the current setup gives. Please don't treat it like a 3-Michelin star experience either. The vibe is very different. This is more a one of a kind comforting homey experience with amazing food and company. I was so excited to score a last minute cancellation and take my husband to Warung RieRie. I first saw it on Instagram and knew it was the perfect place to celebrate our anniversary because we honeymooned in Bali. From the very beginning of getting on the waitlist and scheduled, everything was white glove service with Chef Rie scheduling us personally and explaining the process. Dave met us at the gate and gave an intro to the restaurant's history, the historic rice hut, and the edible garden. I had about a hundred questions and he was very generous in his explanations. He even offered us some fruits to take home. Each course was amazing and took us right back the island. Dave explained everything we were eating and happily answered any additional questions. I was surprised by the amount of food and even needed a to go box for part of my final course. For dessert, Chef Rie and Dave sat down and visited with us. We learned more about their adventures, Bali, and the restaurant. Not only was the food first-class, but intimate setting and warm reception of Chef Rie and Dave made dinning with them a truly magical and unique experience. Beware if you have any food allergies you may be disappointed like me. I booked a reservation 8 months in advance for a special birthday party. My reservation was cancelled a month prior because I'm gluten free and the Resturant will not accommodate my allergy. I was offered alternate dates for when I was out of town that wouldn't work for our schedule. I'm now on a wait list for a cancellation when they have a gluten free menu. Wow, where do I begin? I would say I am a "Foodie" ... enough to scour the "hot and new" places on Yelp and always looking for new restaurants. That's how I discovered Warung RieRie and i remember telling my husband a week after the opened, we need to go! I kicked myself because I waited 1 more week to figure out how to go and they were full for a whole year! Haha Warung RieRie is no ordinary restaurant experience! They are seriously worth the wait (and we did wait). So first, you need to email them to be invited. Once invited, they will send you a link once resos become available (or there's a cancelation). I got the email once resos opened for 2023 back in April 2022... but we patiently waited. Finally last weekend we got to go!!! Please if you can, be patient because I promise you'll love it! I knew we'd sit in a cool authentic Indonesian Hut from Bali with a 6 course gourmet meal. I knew it seemed odd, but so intriguing, that the guy was in a close by neighborhood, next to a school. I knew we'd have the place by ourself as they only do 2 reservations per weekend night (4pm and 7pm for parties of 2-6). What I didn't know was the kind of warmth, love, and amazing stories we'd also get from being guests in Chef Rie and her Husnand Dave's home!!! They had stories for all the courses, how they met (it's wild, ask them!), their children, Bali, and more! You're greeted at the gate as their only guests and get the full warm experience from then on! You walk in to this lit up super cool Indonesian home! There whole yard is filled with plants and fruits they use in the dishes..... passion fruit for the salad dressing, kefir lime in the sauces, etc! We used the restroom and that was even part of the experience! We were led to their home as they live on the property. Rie was cooking in the kitchen, the kids on the couch, cousins in the living room chatting with us! So fun!! Dave and Rie ended the night sharing stories with us as we finished dessert. They even got our friend a dessert for her bday and sent photos the next morning. Another tip, once you share dinner they do homemade coffeee on mon- sat mornings if you text the day before. I was fortunate enough to get a last minute opening for my partner's birthday, chef Rie and her husband David took amazing care of us despite some rain during our dinner. it was a complete surprise to her and everything from the entrance to dessert was a smashing success! We were served a speciality cocktail and a wonderfully crafted and timed 6 course meal. Fritter, soup, vegetable plate with peanut sauce, mahi, chicken, and a nice birthday dessert to top it off. For our anniversary I surprised my husband with a very unique and private 6 course dinner here in San Diego. Warung Rie Rie is an authentic Indonesian fine dining experience inside a 1935 Rice hut imported from Bali. Chef Rie and her husband Dave have this whole experience set up in their own backyard. We definitely did not feel like we were in San Diego! The menu Chef Rie created was absolutely delicious! I can't say that I've ever had Indonesian cuisine before but after last night I'm ready to go back for some more. Dave asked us what our favorite dish was and I could not pick a favorite. I absolutely loved it all! After dinner we sat and talked a bit with Chef Rie and Dave. They treated us like family the whole time. My husband and I love food and enjoying different dining experiences, and honestly, this was one of my favorite experiences so far.
