Food was delicious. I enjoyed the sashimi and pink lady sushi roll. I thought the portion size of the grilled octopus appetizer was quite small for the price (but it was still yummy). Our server never came by once to refill our water. The seating was also very tight. I probably wouldn't visit again just bc I didn't enjoy the vibes as much as I enjoyed the food.

CA uni. I prefer the sweetness of CA uni over Japanese uni.

Finally, a sushi joint in Union County that I would wholeheartedly recommend. In fact might be in top 2 in NJ. They serve both French and Japanese food. And I don't mean fusion. They serve good French food and good Japanese food. On the French side foie gras and duck confit were so good. Better than any French bistro in NJ. Food is well seasoned--meaning it's not over seasoned which lets the quality of the ingredients stand out. On the Japanese side, the approach is similar--food is not drowning in sweet teriyaki sauce. Fish is fresh and they had a long list of specialty items and sushi based in what they had best that day. There were some unusual fish I've not seen in a lot of menus anywhere, even in Tokyo. The dining room is somewhat small but cute. I recommend reservations unless you come at 4pm. Only complaint I had was that they did not have enough servers. There were at least 5-6 in the kitchen but only 2 in the dining room and as hard as they were working they really needed another server. However for the quality of the food I didn't dock any stars. From now on if anyone asks for recommendation for sushi in central NJ I will point them here.

I had high hopes for Wasai - I saw so many amazing reviews (especially about the duck!), but unfortunately, I don't think I'll be coming back. Upon entering, no one really greeted us, but after checking in, there were a few tables open, and the servers were still making us wait. (Throughout our dining experience, there were no reservations at those tables, so I was unsure why we were waiting, though it wasn't for long.) The service itself was average - the servers didn't check in on us often and only came occasionally when we asked for water or assistance. However, I could understand as it was a Friday night, and may be a bit busier (if there are others there, the interior is very packed and tight - not much space between tables). I had high hopes for the dishes and wanted to try their sushi that day. I got the sushi sashimi for two, and after asking the waiter which special rolls came with it, we were told that we couldn't be told, which was interesting (never been told such things, especially in case one has an allergy to something). After our order arrived, we noticed that there wasn't much attention to detail - the yellowtail sashimi came partially cut; the bottom part hadn't been sliced all the way through, so we ended up using our knives to cut it ourselves. Nice that this also included scallop sashimi, though I noticed one piece of scallop was cut into four pieces - It was a bit pricey for what we got. However, the worst part was that after my dinner here, I was left feeling unwell that night. I'm not sure exactly what it was from the order, but I was disappointed by that. Safe to say, I will not be returning to Wasai, though everything on the menu looked very appealing and interesting items. Note: They charge a 3.5% surcharge for cards, so be sure to bring cash if you want to avoid this! :)

One of my favorite Japanese restaurants in the area! Everything here is well cooked and fresh. The interior is quite small and there is only street parking. Make sure to make a reservation regardless if you are coming with a large party. The place is also BYO so it's a great place to come and bring a bottle of wine, beer or sake. The hotate scallop sashimi and torched salmon are my favorite. The uni pasta is also amazing and grilled octopus has great flavor. We love ordering the rolls and the hot stone steak that you cook on the hot stone. For dessert the black sesame crème brûlée is one of our favorites which they only have some times - check the board for specials! My parents come here often and continues to be in our regular rotation of restaurants.

I can't believe I had not written a review for this place recently but I must! Perfect fusion of french and japanese food. This has become my new favorite place for lunch and/or dinner. This was probably my 6th time here! This time we ordered the octopus as an app, the crunch roll, and the confit duck, and for dessert, the cheesecake. Everything is always on point. Food is always amazing and delicious! The service is also on point. Even in nights it was packed, they were quick to get us a table and the wait wasn't too long. Most of the times though I did make a reservation in advance. The place is small so there's limited seating, especially when they have big groups (which is often). The place is BYOB and I def recommend to check out! Can't wait to try more items on the menu.

Love this gem of sushi restaurant tucked away from downtown Cranford. The sushi here is always super fresh and absolutely delicious. The quality here is comparable to sushi places in NYC. I always try to order something from the daily special, and definitely a few pieces of the torched sushi. The sushi sashimi for two is a fantastic choice when you are unsure about what to get. Desserts are always delicious and perfect end to the meal. Seatings are 6 and 8pm, and they are very strict about enforcing the time as it is a very small restaurant and they need to turnover the tables. BYOB. Service is always friendly and helpful.

I was so excited to have my family all together, I forgot to check in!! My son and his fiancé recommended Wasai! My daughter made the reservation for party of 8. Told we have the reservation/ table from 6p -8p. Worked out well it was Friday, with traffic we kind of arrived at different times but we had a table and were seated! It's bring your alcohol. Have limited number of actual menus Had menu scan Appetizers, entrees and desserts- wide variety and with daily specials Strange thing happened with the entrees- Server came back stated my son and fiancé were served the wrong sushi platters and the 2 platters were taken. My son said he had already eaten at least 7 pieces. But the platters were taken. If you served the wrong platters either don't say anything because we didn't notice or tell us but we should have kept the platters that were served Right ??? My son and his fiancé got their ordered platters. My daughter's boyfriend even asked what are you going to do with those platters. Server didn't reply. Their signature dessert was the cheesecake! It was awesome! Bread pudding was a bit dry. Enjoyed being with my family. Service was good. Food was tasty. Just didn't think they handled the wrong platter situation well.

I was looking for a closer sushi spot that I can go to so ai do 't have to drive to Woodbridge anymore. I saw Wasai through the high reviews on Yelp and Google. The Ambiance is great, you can easily tell the workers are clean and they prepare food properly. The design of the restaurant has a beachy feeling and very inviting and chill. I ordered the Sushi and Sashimi deluxe combo that came with a Chef's choice roll. It is $35 and I found it pricey compare to different sushi place I've been to. The seafood was really fresh and the presentation was great. The california roll, spicy tuna and shrimp tempura rolls tasted great but again pricey. For the two trays that you see in the photos, I paid $73. It did not come with any salad or soup side. For this reason, I am deducting a star. Otherwise, food was great. I would give the overall taste a score of 8.2.

The five star restaurant's food overcomes its physical flaws. The wooden chairs are bare wood and uncomfortable to sit on. The place is drafty with the air blowing pleasant warmth followed by chill from the outside. The smell of cooking food from the open kitchen intrudes into the dining room, including the smell of something burning. Parking was limited. The service was attentive and professional. There's a charge of more than 3% for non-cash payments, including bank cards. It's the food that makes this place shine. The duck confit was juicy with the mushroom risotto perfection. The deluxe sushi was very tasty. The Japanese cheesecake with burnt sugar topping and black sesame seed ice cream a must try. Bring a seat cushion and relax. Don't forget to bring cash and a nice bottle of wine.

Excellent everything! I love it so much, I almost want to marry it! I reserved a table for 3 and though I'm Filipino, I was first to arrive. I was immediately seated. My group then ordered to share. The Escargo in Mushroom Sauce- they snailed it!!! ;) Perfectly tender snails were relaxing in an amazing sauce. Then every item in the Sushi and Sashimi for 2 was super fresh and tasty. Then the Angus Steak on Stone (in the entree section of the menu) was magnificent! It was up to us to cook each slice the way we liked and came with 3 condiments. I highly recommend this. Then for dessert, the Cheesecake and Bread Pudding which both arrived with a scoop of black sesame ice cream were divine! From entrance to exit, a wonderful experience perfect for friends, dates, and family! NOTES/TIPS: **BYOB. Vast menu. Cute inside and out! Kids welcome. **Street parking sometimes available. 2 municipal lots nearby along the same street. **2 dinner sessions- 6pm and 8pm. Reservations strongly recommended.

Had dinner here on a Tuesday evening. The server asked me twice if I was ready to order before even giving me a menu. There's a placard on your table with a QR code, and, upon sitting down, you are expected to scan it and read the menu off your cell phone. When I asked for an actual menu, I was handed a sheaf of paper printed with tiny 6-point type. I didn't have a magnifying glass in my pocket, so I guess I'm getting too old for this. I had an OK miso soup, and some good sushi. There are a lot of choices, inc. some unusual ones, but pricey, like $5-10 for one piece of nigiri. What I had tasted very fresh, and was artfully prepared. My entrée was the duck confit. The duck was overcooked and dry. My bad for ordering a rewarmed, pre-made dish. The risotto accompaniment was tasty, but a little gummy, tasted like too much crème fraîche was added. My wife had the roasted salmon. It looked appealing and was cooked perfectly, and she enjoyed it. They rushed us through three courses in an hour, snatching my plate away while the last bite of food was still in my mouth, and presenting the next course ten seconds later. There's only eleven tables in this intimate restaurant. Not sure what the hurry was, half of the tables remained unoccupied the entire time we were there and as we were leaving. Overlooking the service issues and notwithstanding my poor choice of entrée, the other food was very good. I may go back, and will remember to bring my reading glasses. read more

Really wonderful place, BYO and the food is great. They have a vast selection of sushi and different foods. The place gets crowded, but rightfully so - food is fresh and service is great. A really good restaurant in the area that I would highly recommend. read more

Wow wow wow! This is the best restaurant in Cranford by far! The food is delicious, attentive service, and so many options on the menu. I'd recommend the duck confit and truffle edamame. Plus it's byob. Can't wait to go back already! read more

I would have loved to give this place a better review because the taste of the food was good. The sashimi was high quality and very tasty. The service however was unacceptable, and I could not help but feel like my brother and I were thrown to the way side because we were two younger guys in our early 20s. Our entrees were served over 30 mins apart so I could not even eat with my brother. There were other tables that sat down well after us (30 min +) and were served giant platters of sushi before I got my 3 rolls that I ordered before they even walked in the restaurant. When I did get my Spicy Maki Combo one of the 3 rolls it was supposed to come with was swapped out with a California roll. This was my goodbye dinner with my brother and I wanted to take him somewhere nice before he left. Not being able to eat together plus the long wait time for my food really put a damper on our mood and I left the restaurant feeling upset and dissatisfied. read more

Amazing place! Best sushi around, hands down, bar none. I've been coming here almost once a week, sometimes a couple times a week, it's great. Good atmosphere. Kitchen food is awesome too. It's rare to find great sushi along with great food from the kitchen but I found it here. Not your normal Japanese kitchen menu. They have chilean Seabass (my favorite), duck, blackened salmon, big selection for your friends who don't eat raw fish. I have yet to bring someone down who did not enjoy themselves read more

Chef Nelson is truly one of a kind. His Omakase was an experience unlike any other. Although it is easy to think that it is just an amalgamation of expensive ingredients, his dishes were so different than any other fine dining experience I have had. My girlfriend and I enjoyed each and every course with elements of French and Japanese cuisine, made better by Chef Nelson's commentary on their origins. On our usual visits, he has a wide range of dishes to satisfy any craving you may have. Definitely a restaurant you should add to your short list! read more

Came here on a Thursday, only six other people inside which was nice. Food was very good. We tried a little of everything. Sushi was very fresh, the carpaccio and sushi tacos were great. Spicy miso soup was best I've ever had. Smoked duck was good and smoked at the table. Owner was very friendly. The ambiance was very cozy. My only complaint is that it was weirdly quiet. Considering their max capacity is maybe about 10 people it's very quiet. Like so quiet I thought everyone could hear me crunching on my taco. Some background music would do wonders. Maybe they just got busy and forgot? Will definitely be back there soon. read more

First time here. Dishes were delicious. The place is small but decor is quaint. We started with appetizers- escargot in mushroom sauce and grilled squid. Both were outstanding. Entrees were duck confit with mushroom risotto and miso glazed chilean sea bass. We finished all the plates. Recommend making a reservation as there are only a limited number of small tables and half were filled between 6-6:30 on a Monday evening that we were here. Will definitely come back and try the sushi sashimi dishes. read more

Located at Cranford downtown and is right off GSP 136 exit. The restaurant is at the corner of Centennial Ave and Elm St. Chef Nelson was major in interior designer and started his career as chef of Japanese and French cousin in Montreal. He was talented, passionate and put his heart into the dishes he makes. They are so fresh and tasty. Chef Nelson says he likes to bring the best food to the table with reasonable price so people will come and enjoy. read more

Came here to celebrate my best friend's birthday all the way from NYC, and I must say it was really worth our trip. Nelson and Ming were excellent chefs! We were very surprised at their sushi quality and thought they were even better than some famous restaurants in the city. Their special Mes Reves Roll just melt in your mouth, and Nelson's French dishes were also amazing especially the the roast duck and the panna cotta. We could taste every bite of high quality ingredients in their dishes, including "real" vanilla in the panna cotta. We will definitely come back again! :) read more

Excellent sushi restaurant, among the best I have tried in north jersey. Fish is flown in fresh from Japan. Authentic Japanese delicacies such as ankimo (monkfish liver) which are hard to find. BYO, very friendly staff and inviting space. Highly recommend. read more

Moved to the area from NYC a few months ago, had been looking for a proper go to sushi place and I found it at wasai. Great food, service us good. It is cozy, so be sure to reserve a seat days in advanced. I would say that's my only con, hard to get a seat if you don't know sushi is on the itinerary for the weekend. That being said I would compare thier food to places like Nobu in NYC. I have now been going to Wasai consistently for a couple of months, multiple days in a month and wanted to update my review. I will start by saying the food remains excellent, both quality and presentation are excellent. Sadly this past weekend marks the third time my wife and I have had our entrees separately while dining together. I find myself wondering if I will be back, the great food does not make up for the fact that my wife has finished her full entrée, eating slow if I may add to try to wait for me, while I enjoy the company ;-). My wife and I tend to like to eat our dinner together. To add to that the restaurant while extremely apologetic seem to lack the ability to acknowledge the problem and fix it or provide accommodation. I would be happy with our meals coming out at the same time or within reason, not within a 30 minute window of one another. read more

It's our first time at Wasai Bistro and soooooo super delicious!!!! I know if they use fresh fish or not. Decent sushi at astronomical prices for super small rolls. Was surprised to see such high reviews. Service is not focused, and glass of water did not get refilled once. There are no words to describe how great of an experience I had here. My boyfriend and I came here for our anniversary dinner. First off, the restaurant is beautiful and has a great ambiance. The customer service was outstanding. Our waitress was the absolute cutest!!! She was so sweet and I loved talking to her. She also gave really good recommendations. We ordered the salmon lovers and wasai signature sushi and shared between the two of us. The sushi was amazing. Super fresh and tasty, honestly hands down the best place I've been to in jersey for sushi. No where even comes close. The sushi was so incredibly fresh, it tastes like the sushi I would get at omakase in NYC. My boyfriend even ordered the Mes Reves roll additionally because it was so good. We got the cheesecake and black sesame ice cream for dessert. Can I just say, I don't even like cheesecake or black sesame but here it was delicious. This is the place to be!! I went with a few of my girlfriends and had the best time. All the meals we had, ranging from their sushi to entrees to the one of a kind desserts were absolutely delicious. Wasai Bistro is absolutely my favorite restaurant in New Jersey!! The sushi is unbelievably fresh and there are other dishes that you never see in a run of the mill Japanese restaurant like fried sardines and scallop sashimi from Hokkaido! I love the French desserts like crème brûlée and creative renditions of the traditional ones like lychee sorbet. The service is super-attentive. The main entrance is next to the kitchen, which is designed for food delivery and takeout operations. The L-shaped dining room wraps around the kitchen and offers an impressive amount of seating for 80 people with ample natural lighting. The interior decor follows the same rigid industrial wood and metal aesthetic that almost every new hipstery restaurant chain has subscribed to for the past decade. In case you've forgotten that ramen is Japanese, you'll also see neon signs on the walls illuminating some common Japanese phrases (although without furigana). Two gendered restrooms are located left of the kitchen in the far corner of the building and each have two stalls and one sink. I ordered the Tokyo Shoyu Ramen with a side of Chili Charred Brussels for takeout. I placed the order 30 minutes in advance and it was ready at the scheduled pickup time. The Chili Charred Brussels were about five halved sprouts that were steamed and lightly sauteed with a light sprinkling of mustard greens and pepper flakes. I actually enjoyed these more than the ramen I ordered, but they did not have much noticeable charring (or the caramelization that comes with charring). I had a very difficult time enjoying the Tokyo Shoyu Ramen, which is the first item on the ramen menu. The dry ingredients are packaged in the main serving bowl and the broth in a separate plastic takeout container for you to combine yourself. The main attraction of the Tokyo Shoyu Ramen is the three massive slabs of braised pork, which did not disappoint. I tried some of dry ingredients first before drowning them in liquid, although I could not find any bean sprouts. The noodles were slightly undercooked, possibly to compensate for the hot broth. Everything kind of went downhill after I added the shoyu broth. Although the shoyu did impart flavor to the meat and ramen, it was so overwhelmingly salty that it was completely undrinkable by itself. After finishing the noodles, I felt like I was sipping boiled dipping sauce. If chicken broth was in the mix, I certainly couldn't taste it. This is particularly concerning because half of the ramen menu contains this same shoyu tare, and will most likely be too overpowering for most people. In retrospect, I should have ordered the brothless mazemen ramen. The food preparation, while adequate, seemed a bit rushed based on what I ate. Perhaps 30 minutes was not enough lead time for the kitchen, or perhaps this is just how Ani Ramen makes its food. While I appreciate that Ani has helped make ramen more accessible in Central Jersey, it's probably not my first choice for ramen or any of the eclectic side dishes on the menu, e.g. brussels sprouts, kimchi, and gua bao (none of which are Japanese).

Short version: everything I've had at this place tasted amazing- from cold/hot small plates to sushi/sashimi, entrees and desserts. Chef Nelson and staff know how to spoil their patrons. Ambience and Service: The restaurant is intimate, warm and inviting. The chef and staff are very personable, courteous and friendly and happily answer any questions about the menu. The interactions and conversations I've had with Chef Nelson and the staff have all been so genuine and it just elevates the entire dining experience. Parking: street parking or there are 2 municipal lots on Centennial on either side of the street not far from restaurant Additional comments : This is one of the first restaurants I have dined in since the start of the pandemic. It's a BYOB restaurant, which is a nice touch and perfect for a relaxed night out. I visited Wasai Bistro on a Friday night and had an exceptional experience. The atmosphere was cozy and lively, and the service was excellent. The food was delicious and beautifully presented. I particularly enjoyed the seared foie gras, escargot with mushroom sauce, Miso Glazed Chilean seabass, roasted duck confit, and Wasai Signature.
