I took my bike in for a tuneup earlier in the summer. I was pleased but started having some recurring issues in August. I took the bike back in and they made some adjustments and didn't charge me. Always a pleasure to do business with Christian and crew. My 1 year old folding bike had a gear issue. Brought it in and fixed quickly with a new cable and bent bracket. Fixed for a very fair price. Then I had to go back with my baby, the one I do 100 mile rides on. My seat post which I had taped and taped and taped to hold it together over the years. My second time to visit New York and rent bikes, this time with my kid sister. As I said in my April review, this is the best and only way to see the city. Easy, safe, great exercise. We were set up with locks, baskets, helmets, and loving care. It is in a gorgeous location and the staff is friendly. They helped us with maps and the price is so fair. We had out of town guests (including a child) who needed to rent bikes and helmets for an epic bike ride in NYC. This place is even perfect to add air to your tires and fix minor details on your bike (helped my sis add her seat back to bike). Customer service was very friendly and accommodating. "With the city full of so many sleazy bike shops, you guys are alright," said the customer before me. The thought of leaving my old bike shop as I moved into the city unnerved me as I wasn't sure how I was going to comb through what felt like hundreds of bike shops in the city. I had been to a couple shops before checking out Waterfront Bicycle Shop. This is a great little store that goes above and beyond for their customers. The staff is patient, down to earth and friendly. I needed my front stem replaced and Christian, the owner, took his time in explaining to me what he was doing and what my options were (it's always nice to see management helping out!). I had to come back a second time because I left my old stem there and when I went back to pick it up I wanted my handlebars adjusted. The owner made sure I was comfortable with the positioning of the handlebars and was very patient as we adjusted it a few times. It was also on the house for the adjustment which was surprisingly nice, reason being, I should've gotten my old stem back the first time, although, I would have been more than happy to pay for it. Due to the size of the store, Waterfront Bicycle Shop does not sell bikes but it has great bike rentals in a prime location right along the river, repair, merchandise and free air. This feels like a trusting, small town bike shop - not one in the middle of NYC. Going in with a flat tire, I also decided to get a noisy brake fixed. After the repairs were made, I asked if I could take a test ride, to ensure that the noise was gone. Yes, with no ID requested. So I took my bike for a ride - problem had been fixed. Still, I now learned that a spoke was also broken. Should I not fix it, the back wheel would go out of true, causing more problems. I got the spoke repaired, went for another test ride with no ID, came back and paid. As I left, though, I was "high" on the idea that not only had they been honest about what the bike needed and fixed only that, but that they trusted a total stranger who could have taken off to come back and pay his bill. How often does that happen? And if you guys at the bike shop read this review, know that you restored my faith in humanity. read more

I ordered a bike online, but when I assembled it, I noticed that the fork was loose in the headtube, even though all the bolts were tight. I thought it might be a missing part, so I took it to Waterfront Bicycles. They offered to look at it, and fixed the problem in 15 minutes (the wrong size headset spacer), and also applied grease to my pedals -- for a reasonable price. I would definitely go to them again next time I have an issue with my bike that I can't fix on my own. read more

I spirited home the ultimate garage find last summer--a Raleigh DL-1 that needed a few tweaks I wasn't about to do in my apartment. I pedaled down, had a chat about my options, and 24 hours later I was a contented girl, pedaling north on the Hudson bike path. Let them get to know you, and what you want out of your bike. I came in with definitive thoughts about what I'd swap out, and was delighted to have a conversation with people who knew their stuff, and were generous with that knowledge. They offered options and made the work sound like they could do it with one hand tied behind their backs--which they could probably do! With the winnowing of options for bike shops in New York, it's heartening to know these guys are still at it: bike lovers who provide a welcoming atmosphere and solid work. Rented two bikes, had a 5-star experience and quality. Getting bikes was very quick and easy, and staff was very helpful. (It was empty except for us, which certainly helped.) Bikes were well maintained -- good brakes, smooth ride, etc. Rode up and down the riverside path and had a great half-day if it. The gears weren't all perfectly aligned, but plenty good enough. Dropped by on a busy Saturday afternoon missing a screw for my water bottle holder frame a month ago. They greeted me immediately, asked what the problem was, and took care of it right away. They didn't charge me anything. I filed that away and resolved to try this place next time there was something on my bike I couldn't fix myself. A couple of days ago I had my bike leaning against a park bench on the east side greenway and a strong wind blew it over and dropped it on drive side. I found after that I couldn't shift into the highest gear and shifting to the lowest gear made the chain hit the spoke protector. The indexing was unreliable as well. I determined that the drop had probably bent the derailleur hanger. It's possible to remove the derailleur and bend the hanger back with an adjustable wrench if you have a good eye (I tried this, but had only fair results). The best solution is to use a special (expensive) derailleur hanger alignment tool to bend it back to a plane exactly parallel to the wheel. So I dropped by the shop mid afternoon on a weekday when I figured they wouldn't be too busy, and sure enough they had my bike on the stand right away. I said I'd dropped the bike on the drive side and now couldn't shift to the highest gear reliably. Less than 10 minutes later they had bent the hanger back into place and indexed the gears for a little more than 10 bucks. I soon realized that when I got the bike used off Craigslist two months earlier the hanger must have already been a little misaligned despite all the tweaking I attempted. I had written off the sometimes unreliable shifting to a cheap Sora groupset. But Waterfront had fixed it dead ass perfect. It now shifts smoothly, quietly and reliably--much, much better than it ever had before. My drive train is also dead silent now that the derailleur is aligned correctly. It's like a brand new bike. Best money I ever spent. These guys are true professionals but completely lacking in attitude. They also have a free kickass dial-a-pressure air station outside and decent pricing on must-have accessories. read more

Sometimes I get intimidated by pretentious bike shops when I need to bring my 50 year old clunker in for a repair, but not the case with Waterfront. Christian and Marcelo are very nice and friendly, they engaged me in conversation and played with my dog while I waited for my bike to get fixed (which wasn't very long, as they are very efficient). I only needed a new brake cable, but they tightened my chain, put air in my tires and tightened some bolts for me, with out me having to ask; it really show they care about their clients do a thorough job! The second time I came in, Marcelo remembered me and let me borrow a bike so I could run some errands while I waited for mine to get fixed. Definitely an A+ for customer service! Even if you don't live in the neighborhood, it is worth a trip over to Waterfront! read more

Rented 4 bikes on Sunday to ride up to the Cloisters in Harlem. The place was very well organized and the service was good. Excellent location right across the West Side Highway from the Hudson. The reason they are docked 1* is because one of the wheels blew out on our way back at around 137th and the Hudson River. The actual tube ripped and we had to take it off the wheel. Although no one came to help us, there happened to be another bike shop (for Bike N Roll) on the Hudson, where we were able to leave the bike (so that someone from the bike shop could pick it up) and we could rent a replacement for the rest of the day. The bike shop people reimbursed us for the new rental and comped the bike that blew out, so in the end it all worked out. read more

I was desperate to learn how to ride a bike and found this place had pretty decent rates in comparison to its competitors ($22 for 2 hours) - my boyfriend helped teach me on the block behind the shop as not a lot of cars pass by there, and was fortunately able to learn within an hour! The staff was super friendly and very accommodating - they were understanding of the fact that I was learning (and didn't make fun of me - always a plus point!) and made sure my bike was comfortable, and that I had a helmet. Great bike rental experience. They got us up and running quickly and easily. Decent selection of bike types (cruisers, mountain bikes). About $35 for 2 people for 3hrs. The give you helmets and baskets if you need them. Directly across the street from the bike path so you don't have to start out on streets. We went up the Hudson River Park to 79th, then crossed over via 78th to the park, did the lower half loop in CP, then did the whole thing in reverse. A great way to spend an afternoon. read more

I had rented a Citi bike from one of the countless racks in NYC the day before I rented from Waterfront. The Citi bike was rickety and needed TLC. Then I rented from Waterfront and the bike I used was a super nice hybrid/commuter type of bike and it was in GREAT condition. Shifted great. Brakes were spot-on. The bike was fluid and rode like my expensive bike I'm used to at home. I'll be back to rent from these guys the next time I'm in NYC - without question! read more

Although i didn't end up buying my bike here, i really appreciated the customer service. i walked in not knowing ANYTHING about bikes (a bit embarrassing actually), but Christian was really nice and walked me through the basics. He didn't have the bike i was interested in in-stock and would've had to order from the manufacturer. i wanted to walk out with a bike that day so i could ride this weekend, but it wouldn't have come in on time.
