Having a quiet moment on the love chair swings, letting kids frolic on different playgrounds, enjoying the absolute cultural icon that is Waterfront Wednesdays, setting up a picnic to watch historic moments like an eclipse, BYO-Chair for movie nights at the amphitheater. Food truck festivals, and flea markets, and chalk art... I just cannot say enough about how amazing this park and all of its recreational activities are. Plus, don't forget to use Waterfront Park to access The Big Four Bridge which provides a beautiful view of Louisville and helps showcase how expansive the park is. With over 85 acres to explore, I highly suggest the riverside path for a bike or scooter ride. While Waterfront Park isn't a large park like Stanley Park in Vancouver or Central Park in New York, it's a nice park near the waterfront in downtown Louisville. Located in the park is the Flock of Finns sculpture and the Lincoln Memorial, as well as the entrance of the Big Four Bridge, on which you can view fireworks for various events and sports games. (There seems to always be fireworks for one reason or another going on in Louisville, and without knowing about any events, we just assumed -- correctly -- that if we stood on the bridge on a Saturday night around 10pm, we'd see fireworks.) It's a nice park to take a peaceful stroll and sit by the waterfront, and there are often various events going on, such as the Waterfront Wednesday concerts held during the summer. There are washrooms in the park which are supposed to be open until 9pm between mid April and mid November, although when we were there in July, it was about 8:45pm/8:50pm (definitely before 9pm) and I desperately had to pee, and the washrooms were closed! After seeing some of the sights I had a little downtime and decided to take in the waterfront. How apt that Waterfront Park was right here to do that. Waterfront Park is a nice respite from the hustle and bustle of downtown Louisville. Literally bordering downtown, but feels like it is miles apart. Once you cross over to the park area it noticeably becomes quieter. With that peacefulness you are actually able to feel yourself relax a bit. I walked as far as I could here before I decided to turn back around and head back towards where my vehicle was and where food was. Strolling along the Ohio River in a different state is always a weird experience when you have lived where the Ohio forms. It is obvious that this is a venue area by the way that some of the paths and lawns are taken care of. It is also obvious that this is a relaxing place to take a fiver if you need to. read more

Great multi purpose spot! Playgrounds, fountains, walking spaces, great view of the river, access to Joe's Crab Shack and Belle as well. There are plenty of events to see throughout the summer. They range from free fireworks shows, free concerts, flea markets, festivals, etc. Rent bikes, walking path to Portland area locks, or bring your own bikes. Waterfront Park is a Louisville gem! Some reasons why I love it: * There is so much for kids to do! There are a few great, modern playground areas, including one for younger kids that's in the shade. * This splash pad! It's the largest I've seen in Louisville. I want to be a kid again and play in it. * It's very clean and well lit. * You can find parking in lots around the park, as well as along River Road. * Easy access to the Big Four Bridge, another Louisville treasure. * Host to so many great events, like Waterfront Wednesday. * Views of the Ohio River, as the park's name would imply. This is a HUGE park that spans all along the waterfront in downtown Louisville. It's a bit confusing on Google because it looks like several different parks that combine into one. With that in mind, we parked at at "waterfront park" but there is nothing to do on that end. Just a walking path and view of the water. As we walked down the path we did come upon bbq area, cool swinging benches, a sunk in step area where people were dancing (like you could have an event there) and WAY down the other end there is an area with restrooms, playground equipment, picnic tables, etc. Between these areas there are multiple parking lots. I liked that it was quite and serene even with lots of people there. Everyone was respectful and shared the pathways. It was enjoyable walking the pathway, viewing the river and going to the big four bridge. I would definitely come back (but park by the big four). read more

A nice, sunny fall day to enjoy the park. Appears to be multiple parks that run together are along the riverfront. Many people were walking, biking and skating. Parking was free at the numerous lots we seen along our way to enjoy the view from the Big 4 Walking Bridge. This walking bridge connects Louisville, KY to Jacksonville, IN and was previously a railroad bridge. This could be useful to persons that may be able to bike/walk to work across the Ohio River as another form of commuting. along our walk we came across many bench swings and picnic areas too. Was a great place to enjoy the outdoors! This park is within walking distance from the downtown Louisville area. read more

Visited the Waterfront Park on a Saturday morning for a lovely breezy walk along the River. We happened to also participate in a monthly program with a local Walk-with-a-Doc chapter -- more info available on the internet for anyone looking for a safe walking program. On the day we visited, there was a huge International Food Truck Festival from 11 AM to 11 PM and seemed to be about 30 trucks with the gamut of cuisines represented. Beautiful setting with rolling green bermed hills, porch swings, mature trees, plenty of light fixtures, and well maintained walkways. Always happy to visit and looking forward to returning soon. read more

I love this park. It's easily accessible from my house in Crescent Hill. There are lots of walking/running trails. The park is always clean, and under surveillance by LMPD constantly (The live roaming police officers and metro-camera video surveillance). It's generally pretty safe, but I'd recommend visiting during daylight hours. No matter if you're a walker, runner, or pushing a stroller or wheelchair, most sidewalks are wide, flat, and clear of debris -- with the exception or right by the river. When the water gets high some mud, driftwood and other river junk can make its way to the sidewalks. I'm not sure if the city cleans it or waits for the rain to wash it away, but it typically doesn't block the pathways for too long. If you're braving the park in the winter, just remember that the wind it even more bitter coming off the river. On super cold days, I run the path closest to River Road, rather than alongside the river. Aside from the free, safe fitness, I love that the Big Four Bridge at Waterfront Park offers a free connection to Jeffersonville. The Big Four Station on the Jeffersonville side offers lots of cool businesses and more places to walk/run. I refuse to pay the bridge toll (via car) and hate fighting traffic on the 2nd Street Bridge, but I've used the Big Four Walking Bridge as a Segway/excuse to go for doughnuts, beer and even a trip to the Falls of the Ohio. Note: tax is higher in Indiana, so you can just as easily walk the bridge for fitness then meet up with friends in Nulu to save tax different. Also note that during Covid, many of the IN side businesses I've visited haven't taken masking seriously. Another reason, IMO, to get my free fresh air & exercise, then return to the Ville. Don't fall into the tourist trap of the paid parking across the street from the bridge. If you're looking for parking, I recommend the lots further away from the Bridge. Those tend to be crowded with cars and pedestrians. If you don't mind some extra steps, places like the UofL Rowing lot typically have plenty of spots -- and for free. During "normal" times, the Park is also home to some great festivals - both free and paid. Other attractions include a splash park, large playground, scooter, Segway and bicycle rentals and food vendors (during warm seasons). There's usually a hot dog guy near the bridge. No horseshoes, basketball or volleyball- just plenty of walking paths and places to picnic and watch the boats go by. Def recommend visiting any season. read more

Large park in the downtown Louisville area that hosts several events and is mainly used for big events such as thunder over Louisville. Parking is pretty limited and they do have a decent sized park with some spray grounds right at the foot of the walking bridge that takes you to the Indiana side. Park is decently upkept but as I said the parking is atrocious. Compared to other major cities with a waterfront park this Louisville park is lacking. Not many activities or interactive things to do compared to other cities and there really isn't too many dining or entertainment options where the main park is. There a few vacant buildings near the spray ground. The city should invest into it a bit more to add more parking and more things to do. read more

The river here is wide and muddy, but the park adjoining it is robust, with a large area of riverside devoted to pure recreational use. I was surprised to find several areas of free parking. Perhaps on busy weekend it's hard to find a space, but on a nice weekday I had no trouble finding a shaded space to use as a launchpad for a foot trip around the city. Some small food and drink vendors were around, and there were several restrooms of at least adequate cleanliness and functionality. There are a lot of comparable areas that don't have these basics. Besides the magisterial footbridge, it's a place that a lot of people were picnicking at, and there were playgrounds and a water park for children. The overall amount of interconnecting greenway trails on both sides of the river is quite substantial and certainly admits of a good day of exploring. read more

Located alongside the Ohio River between the bridges, Waterfront Park aka the Great Lawn is a park and music venue and general hangout. The western half of the park features linear fountains, not officially intended for swimming but nevertheless popular for that purpose. Further east are two expansive lawns, bisected by the interstate, and a small series of docks for boats. Nearby are the Children's Play Area and the Adventure Playground. Came here for a jog on a weekday afternoon, appreciated the free parking along the river. Nice path to run or walk, not shaded much, there's a playground and some spots to sit in the shade though. Noise from the highway and street was somewhat annoying but the bridge views were nice! read more

The Color Run was held on the Waterfront. This was definitely a large place to hold an event of this magnitude. There were so many scenic views and open space. In addition, there was ample parking in various lots surrounding the event. Be prepared to walk, though. read more

This 85 acre park has something for everyone. Beautiful views (day and night) as well as a pedestrian bridge (the Big Four Bridge, which I also reviewed). It has playgrounds for the kids and lots of seating (benches and swings). Nice, well-kept sidewalks for walking, biking, and scootering. There is a rental company next to the bridge that rents various types of transport: surreys (I included a couple website photos), double surreys, regular bikes, cruiser bikes, and accessories. From around 13-27 dollars per hour. There are fountains, an amphitheater, and a Lincoln memorial. Some parts of the park are nicer than others. It's probably nicest at the pedestrian bridge. There are a lot of homeless people further down the way, but homeless people are people too, and what else are they supposed to do? They have to be somewhere, and may as well be in a pretty place. There are several events held here and sometimes food trucks. Plenty of parking, right now at least, during COVID 19. They have a fireworks show here annually as well. There is another phase of park expansion in the works--22 acres for a children's play area and public art, amongst other uses. read more

So waterfront park was T2 for my Ironman Louisville. Start waterfront park not only perfect venue for Ironman event but really any outdoor event. It huge area with lot of open area. So much different area am sure missed some, different things to do, and different perspective of the Ohio River. The best park about Park most of it all grass open area. Perfect for T2. The main area of the park even cement steps that can chill, relax, and perfect viewing spot for Sherpa or feel Ironman is people coming out of the river or transition on the bike, and again perfect spot overlooking the Ohio River. Couple spots that have these cool sculptures with park benches that chill and relax. Another area that can do barbecue, kids playground, and so much stuff can do here. Waterfront park close to the KFC Center. So lot of great foodie spots walking distance nearby. They have few different small parking lots spread across the park. Waterfront Park is one of my favorite places to visit in the city! And that's saying a lot, because Louisville has so much to see and do! I think a lot of people don't realize how large Waterfront Park is. I looked it up, because I was curious, and it's actually 85 acres! That's awesome! It's right next to downtown, so it's really convenient to access from that area of town, or from Nulu, the Highlands, or my neck of the woods - Shelby Park. We ride our bikes over to the area often. In addition to biking you can also walk or jog the area, take in the beautiful views of the water and grounds, enjoy the playground or sprayground, check out the awesome public art, or walk across the Big Four Bridge. And that's not even everything, that's only some of what you'll have access to in the area. Plus, during certain times of the year, this area is home to many different festivals and concerts, including WFPK Waterfront Wednesday. If you're looking for an awesome spot to spend some time in the Louisville area, Waterfront Park is definitely it! read more

To me, this just isn't a park, it's a great place to gather with friends, exercising, an abundance of festivals etc. Most of my good memories come from Waterfront Park. I used to come to this park a lot with friends from out of town, for morning runs, Waterfront Wednesday, Forecastle, etc. It's a huge park that unfortunately gets flooded a lot with the storms and higher tides. It's pretty though! And free! It's nice to see green spaces. Cities need to prioritize creating and preserving them. I think Louisville has done a good job with this. read more

Walked on the path along the waterfront park today. From the base of the big four bridge westward toward the great lawn. So much to take in and so many cool sitting areas, picnic areas, playgrounds, swings with great views of the river, the Lincoln memorial. Also cool to walk under the massive bridge structures. There were folks everywhere so very safe. The city has done a fantastic job on revitalizing our waterfront. There are parking areas all along that stretch of the waterfront. Just pick a free parking spot, lock your car, take your water and explore. We saw th ed U of L rowing team on the water families with strollers, kids on bikes, and rental bikes as we strolled. There are no restaurants, bars or coffee shops along the way just plenty to see and explore. Highly recommend. read more

There's a really fun great park that has a wonderful atmosphere and you're in downtown Louisville. I've been numerous times to take my kids to play in the fountains they have down here me and my family my friends have gone insane concerts that they have down here and they just have a lot of fun cool things to offer it's a wonderful addition to the city. When my husband and I visited Louisville last spring to see if we wanted to move here I though "Wow. This place has amazing parks." Since moving here I realize I had no idea just how great they were. I love the waterfront park because it right next to downtown but so extremely calm and serene you feel like you could be miles away. If you are looking for that perfect easy walk to take your date after dinner or even just to get outside and walk your dog, this is the perfect spot. Tons of sidewalk right next to the water and it is usually very well lit. I felt safe the whole time with my husband. For kids there are several insanely cool playgrounds for all ages. If you are looking for a great spot to picnic, look no further. I am a huge picnic date fan and I love setting up camp right next to the water. If you come in the evening you get to watch the river boats come by in their lit up splendor as the sun fades. Super romantic. Alongside this there's absolutely TONS of restaurants around the area if you aren't the meal packing type and just want to snag something to-go before heading to the park and eating outside. If you want upscale grocery store food near the park the grocery in the Omni Hotel is always an option. There's also a lot of free concerts or events that pop up along this park so coming on the weekend you might find yourself in the middle of an awesome event! Definitely don't miss this park when you come to visit. Especially since you are probably so close if you are staying downtown. read more

In town for the weekend and enjoyed a wonderful walk down by the river. I walked from one end by the Belle of Louisville steamboat to the Big Four Bridge the links the park to Jeffersonville Indiana on the other side. The walk across the pedestrian bridge is great. Lots of runners and families. You get a wonderful view of downtown. On Saturday morning there was a farmers market at the base of the bridge in Jeffersonville with different vendors selling crafts, food and drinks. read more

The best part? The beautiful view of the Ohio river and Indiana. Not to mention it's also kid friendly, with a nice sized playground for the little ones. There's a few different parking spots that are always open, so you never have to worry about parking on the street. The park provides a pretty long trail, that takes you down to the Big Four Bridge; providing another great view and workout area. There's also a little waterfall fountain that flows into the Ohio river, and is nice to cool off in around summer time. If you're hungry, there's a Joe's Crab Shack and Subway within walking distance, as well as a few food trucks by the Humana building. At Waterfront Park by the Big Four Bridge for Waterfront Wednesday. Great free music concert series for everyone. Close to the bridge, you can take a walk to Indiana and back if so inclined. There is lots of shade to sit in while waiting for sunset. Vendors for food and drink. No dogs or coolers allowed (they check). Bike racks for those choosing environmentally friendly transportation. Swings in the park are great for just chillin. You can people watch, river watch, relax, or let the music make you move. There is parking in the park's parking lots, but they fill quickly for events. Great park on the shore of Ohio River. Quite peaceful and a good place for outdoor activities for both, adults and kids. The parking is free and there is a children's play area just as you enter the place. There are tracks for cycling and trails. Beautiful views of two bridges on either side - I-64 on one side and I-65 on another. When we went there were people with their kids learning cycling or playing on their own in the play area. There were people jogging or just having a leisure walk along the trail. There were a couple of adults playing various outdoor games. Some of the trees are perfectly apart to tie a hammock and relax reading your favorite book. There are benches and large swings where you can sit back and enjoy the view. Overall, a great place to be if you want to take a moment off from the busy life and enjoy the nature for a while. read more

I walk around Waterfront Park almost everyday. I work at Humana, so it's right behind my building. And most days, I just need to get away from my desk for about 30 minutes or so. Waterfront Park is there for me. It has a lovely path right next to the river, a playground for the kids, some bizarre abstract artwork thing, and Interstate 64 running right through. One of my favorite places in the city. Playgrounds, sidewalks, some art(but I'd like to see more), the great lawn, well kept, tables, benches, great view of the river, and perfect atmosphere to enjoy a date. The park's proximity to downtown is the perfect way to make a night date into an almost all day affair. I love being at the park around dusk. Strolled through waterfront park in Louisville with my soulmate and the dogs on a beautiful Autumn day. Encountered very few people on this early Friday afternoon. Well maintained park with plenty of tables and benches to rest or enjoy a picnic. We even spoke with a river guide excursionist that had trapped and trained a red-tailed hawk. Louisville's Waterfront gem is waiting for you! From it's Belvedere and Bell of Louisville's the oldest paddle wheel steamboat to the dinner cruise Spirit of Jefferson, to the opposite end of University of Louisville rowing facilities which covers more than a mile of River road. Along the way Our group found many venues for diverse activities. To name a few there is the great lawn a huge multiple use space for concerts to festivals To name a few I've attended Forecastle, Derby event concerts/ chow wagon music with food venders, to the afternoon Mayors free concerts to bike rentals. Your welcome a casual bring your own frisbee, or favorite family game or enjoy a afternoon/ evening picnic. There are so many different sections to see a boat slip to tie off & visit downtown. A small Amphitheater for plays to local school concerts. To a small kids splash park. Many meandering walk ways guide you from end to end. Let's me not forget the main attraction. The Big Four Bridge, which covers the full span of the mighty Ohio River from Kentucky to the Indiana town of Jeffersonville's landing so you can experience their offerings. Which I'll save for a later separate review. The bridge is open mornings to dark. As well as walking you will also find allowed and designated bike lanes. Each Louisville waterfront area provides clean restroom facilities which I considered a bit small but fills the need. So if your local or a visitor looking for a full day or more of fun the Waterfront Park fills the bill. If I've left out another attraction I'll leave it for your next adventure. read more
