I had fish and chips, which was Tgood. there was one rather large hunk of fish and way too many fries at a pricey $14.00. My guest ordered chicken strips- If I had known the amount of fries I would get, she could have avoided buying a separate order of fries I recommend the Tennessee cheesecake. It still seems a Liberty U student hangout, The centrally situated bar was large and very noisy. (Does beer make one deaf?) I didnt notice it the first time I was here but the booth seats are EXTREMELY uncomfortable. They are solid flat wood with square front edges and backs. Maybe the discomfort contributes to getting people to refrain from hanging around after they eat- it sure worked for me. Use your GPS as the place is hard to find without one. Parking is adequate

I am used to visiting downtown roanoke or Blacksburg location but we came here after a long day shopping for art supplies. I had the chicken Alfredo, kids stayed busy with the kids menu and they had a large selection of food and drinks. Everyone says "WOW" seeing the menu. Was sad the banana split is no longer available. This location didn't have the insane wall collection they do at other locations, but the service was wonderful, tvs for trivia (that night), friendly and social patrons as everyone was participating. Its close to liberty university, so carries that neighborly vibe.

After several visits to this Macado's I decided to finally write a review about this extravagant…read morerestaurant. According to their website, "Macado's started in downtown Roanoke, Virginia, in 1978 and became popular for its eclectic decor and moderately priced food, especially with the college crowd." The chain emphasizes: "a comfortable and enjoyable atmosphere for a diverse clientele, including families."  Today, as I was seated in the booth the Host had brought me to and observing the Macado's logo on the paper napkin laying on my table, I thought to myself: What is the meaning of the "Just to be there" located under the restaurant's name in its logo? And I thought to myself that It's possible "Just to be there" might be a phrase associated with the feeling of camaraderie or the comfortable atmosphere that Macado's aims to provide, and thus a popular spot for people of all ages and social classes to get together, eat, socialize, and be merry. I remember the very first time I ate here. It was for a lunch invitation from a good friend of mine I hadn't seen in a while. The first impression I got of the place was amazing. I loved the building where the restaurant was housed and all the interesting decorations. It was almost completely full from the lunch crowd, yet this provided a warm and cozy feeling knowing that so many people had taken the time to come eat here even though they knew it would be crowded. I was fascinated by the large and extensive menu, and after carefully reviewing it, ordered the Bacon, Egg, and Cheese Burger. It came with half a pound of meat, a soft fresh bun, and a whole bunch of krinkle fries. It was so big and delicious I can't forget how full I was when I finished eating it. Just eating there for the first time and I couldn't wait to return. I had set such high expectations of the place that many of the other times I visited the place I was disappointed. It could have been by the lack of training of the servers on the Knowledge of and explaining menu items, or by the timing on how to serve them. Or it could be by a mistake from the cook in cooking or preparing an item. Like today, I ordered Bang Bang Shrimp as an appetizer and the shrimp arrived overcooked almost to the point of burnt with the Assian Crisp Noodles a bit stale. So much so that I had to ask to see the manager to formally complain. The manager was a friendly young lady who listened to me and admitted the shrimp could have been fried before they had just changed the oil. And she came up with possible solutions to the question: "What can I do to make it right?" Of which I choose for her to not charge me for the burnt shrimp and the bad dining experience they had caused me. I went on and ate the Lone Ranger sandwich with Onion Rings that were cooked right, and because of the manager's handling of the situation in such an effective way, I am sure to return, because there is something about Macado's that makes you want to "Just to be there."

The first night we ordered the stuffed cod and burgers, along with beers and soft drinks. Everything was fantastic. The food was flavorful, fresh, and cooked perfectly, and the service was quick and genuinely friendly. We liked it so much that we went back again the same weekend. The second time we had burgers, a club sandwich, fried green tomatoes with pimento cheese, a punch cocktail, a tall beer, and soft drinks -- and once again, everything was spot-on. Consistently great food and great service both times. We went in around 8:00 p.m. the first night, and the staff was cheerful and energetic -- you would have thought they had just started their shifts. That's a huge plus when dining a little later in the evening. Everyone we spoke to said it's a local favorite, and after our experience, we completely understand why. If we had more time in town, we probably would have eaten there a third time. Definitely a must-stop in Lexington!

I wanted to get the skirt steak and fries, but unfortunately that wasn't an option online. I opt'd for the burger, as did my boyfriend, both of our burgers came out with the wrong toppings. Oh well, we ate them and they were fine. Seems like a typical, frozen burger patty. The french fries were very greasy. We also sat outside here for a drink at one point. They have a very cute patio in the back of the restaurant. I got the Lex vegas, it was thick because of the puree. I didn't think about that, it wasn't as refreshing as I thought it would have been. I really didn't have too much interaction with the staff as we just ordered a drink and then online pickup but everyone seems nice and helpful.

My 6yo daughter had the waffles, I got the twoseez which was basically toast, scrambled eggs and bacon (which said daughter took), pre-teen son had a bagel sandwich, and wife had an omelette. My wife's omelette was extremely flavorful. What really made it wonderful was the owner's kindness and honesty. Knowing we were tourists asked us what we planned on doing and when mentioning the near by safari park, he said "oh don't play to feed the animals" which was exactly what we needed our kids to hear because two week prior the kids had a field trip to a petting zoo and my daughters class including her all got sick and I didn't want a repeat of that on our vacation... so thank you dude. But also he gave some insider info on where else to go around and that was also appreciated.

Macado's slogan "Just to be there" is meant to highlight Macado's welcoming, highly social atmosphere; suggesting that this restaurant is more than just a place to have a meal. It's a local hangout place where people come to relax, socialize, and be part of the community. Macado's Salem was established in 1990 by the Macher family to bring Macado's signature blend of hearty sandwiches and eclectic decor to the heart of the City of Salem. After having been selected as number 4 of Yelp's Top 50 most prolific Elites of 2025, a year when I was also awarded the Yelp Triad Squad Photographer of the Year Award at their Yelpies 2025 Award Ceremony, an event that honored the highest-performing Yelp Elites, and where last year I was awarded the Yelp Triad Squad Yelper of the Year Award, I decided that this year, as an All-Star Yelp Elite, I not only wanted to be the first to discover new restaurants and businesses, and bring them to the attention of the public, but also to uncover those found in hidden paths that for one reason or another have not reached the public in its totality. And this Macado's in Salem, Virginia is a perfect example. Today I visited this restaurant for the first time to experience first hand this beloved hangout place and see for myself if it's living up to its reputation and if it's really worth the trip. I invite you to besides reading my review, view my photographs accompanying this review to get a better sense of the place, its one-of-a-kind ambiance, and high-quality food and drinks, not to mention its extraordinary customer service. From the time I arrived in my pearl white Lexus and took my first photograph of the front of the building which originally was the site of the Malibu restaurant (receiving a total face-lift from the Macher family after purchasing it) and checked-in with my Yelp app with that photo, I started receiving likes from all my Yelp friends, and felt mesmerized about the place and eager to finally walk in. Inside a friendly young lady greeted me and took me to my table. After a warm welcome she took my drink order for an Iced Dr Pepper and went to get it while I studied the extensive menu of which I enjoyed looking at the caricature of this gigantic tall hamburger. When my server nicknamed Bean arrived with my drink, I ordered the Wild Bill Burger. It was described in the menu as having cheddar cheese, smokehouse bacon, BBQ sauce, lettuce, tomato, and topped with beer battered onion rings. All sounded so delicious that set my high expectations for the burger which I chose to be accompanied by their fries which I had yet to taste. My server mentioned that this was a great choice and went to put in the order. When it came out, the burger looked gigantic and marvelous, and tasted amazingly delicious. And the fries light and crunchy. One of the best fries that I've ever had. I asked my server to give my compliments to the cook for such amazing food cooked and displayed to perfection. While I was earing my very kind and efficient server came by to check on me and see if I needed a refill on my drink. For dessert I had an Original New York Cheesecake and a Single Scoop of Vanila Ice Cream. It too was amazing. I made sure to ask for and pay for the bill before it was time to change shifts to make sure my server got her tip. In conclusion, I highly recommend this cozy and friendly establishment not only to have a lovely meal but also to spend some quality time with family and friends. It far exceeded my highest of expectations. And I'm looking forward to returning ... Just To Be There.
