If you're looking for a basic record store you might as well go somewhere else. This is not your average run of the mill record store intended for the occasional collector. This place is something special, something unique. A once in a lifetime experience for the true vinyl collecting junky. I had the pleasure of visiting wax trax while on a work trip a week ago. Before coming in I did my research. I read all the bad reviews about how they don't price their inventory, how the owner is rude, blah blah blah. Those only made me more curious. Upon arrival I was immediately greeted and asked what I'm looking for. I told the owner my genre preference and they without hesitation showed me all the sections so I could start digging. Spent 2 hours searching on my hands a knees through row after row of 45s/ 12". Till eventually I landed on a rare banger that I myself have never even heard of and according to Discogs only 9 people own. This is something that doesn't happen so often when digging for me anymore. Right then and there I knew this place was something special. A true treasure trove of vinyl. The owner was even fair with his pricing. Overall this is a business that will never come around again and if you don't appreciate it while it's here then you will only miss it when it's gone. 10 out of 10 will be back again read more

Selection, I'll say it again, selection! This place is epic for their selection. I read couple mixed reviews on prices and service and I have to say I thought most of the prices were inline and the staff was incredibly friendly! I found one of my "grail" albums there and spent 30 plus minutes chatting with staff. I feel bad I didn't get names but everyone was very friendly and knowledgeable. They have the mot organized system of used media that I have ever seen. I can see stopping by regularly to sift through their inventory. Great selection of stuff but there is a reason for that. Everything is super overpriced and to find that out you have to take it to the counter. I had found a record that the highest sale price on Discogs was $10 with multiple listed for sale for $3 - $10. Also a Metallica album from Walmart that was also listed on Discogs for $25 across the board. Now I don't mind paying slightly more than those prices since it helps a local business but when that $10 record become $25 and the Metallica record became $50 well thats just taking advantage of your customers. Upon showing the owner the Discogs pricing my friend and I were informed "Nothing leaves this shop for under $20" Its not even worth negotiating with them on price because you are starting SO far apart. The reason for the 5 OG copies of Master of puppets and 20+ copies of pretty much anything you can think of is because they over price it and it sits there. This happened the first time we went to the store well over a year ago too. The Same records were STILL on the shelves because we offered on them last time to. I was on a musical journey today and decided to hit up Wax Trax Records. Had the time to journey to the west side of time and it was well worth it! First off -I really enjoyed my conversation with Rich. He's so knowledgeable of his collection and was a hoot to talk to . I found albums here that I have not been able to find anywhere else. I scored : The Psychedelic Furs first album, The Smithereens , Ramones, Sting and Supertramp. Go there early with your stretchy pants because it will take you awhile to browse and you'll need stretchy pants to get through the aisles. I've been crate digging since before half the folks in this town were born, so I know a good record shop when I see one. This place could be great. If you ask a question, prepare to feel like you failed a pop-quiz. Now to be fair, the selection is massive. If you're hunting for something weird and awesome it's probably here but don't expect to know what it costs until they look it up and slap a price on it based on vibes and discogs listings from 2017. That is the catch, no prices. You bring it to the counter and your $12 record is now $40 because Rich decided it's a "hot one" this month. Its like antiques roadshow and a garage sale mixed together. I found 7 records in around 90 minutes, took them to the front & they spend well over an hour looking up prices, they quoted me $240 for 7 records I can buy on eBay for under $100 in better grade! I visited Wax Trax back in December of 2023. Let me start off by saying (and I mean this in the least pretentious way possible) that this place is for serious buyers and collectors. If you're just getting into the vinyl game - it's certain that Rich is probably going to rub you the wrong way, but that's just how the guy is. If you know your sh*t, even to an extent - he won't treat you like an idiot (though he may scold you for not being "good at browsing"). The other guys who work there are ironically extremely chill and laid-back. With of all that being said, this place truly is a dream for collectors who are looking for crazy stuff that you don't see everyday - it's almost unreal when you walk in and look at the super rare stuff they have just sitting there in the bins, most being un-sleeved. Yeah - nothing's priced, and of course like everyone else, I think it's a ridiculous concept - but hey, talk to Rich with what what you want, and he may work out a deal with you, like he did with me. OMG! A real record store on PLANET EARTH?! Yes, just so happens to be in all of you readers back yards! Stay away from corporate, support the store that has what you want. My friend came into town from Belgium who happens to be a serious collector and looks for high dollar highly collectible punk albums. To his surprise, Wax Trax had one that was super rare and the owner even worked with him on the price and payment method since his belgium bank wont allow such a high dollar amount over seas. I had my 2 kids with me so I wasn't able to take it all in as my hands were tied. Still shot some rare gems at the owner to see if they had any stuff I been looking for online for years.. told me exactly where they were. My GOD I was in heaven! There's was so many sections to look at, but I didnt look through all of them because I knew they were closing soon. Everyone was in the store and I even got some recommendations based off my favorite bands! It was a little tight, but honestly I didn't care much. This place is great ONLY because is has easily over a million pieces of vinyl and the selection is MASSIVE. Once you get inside you'll notice the place is absolutely crammed with vinyl of all types. On the outside just an older stucco green building, inside it's a fire hazard or trip & fall waiting to happen (if it hasn't already) The owner is a very crochety old New Yorker who was quite rude to the girl staffer who was attempting to give me the lay of the place and where each genre was located. Getting in the place initially was a chore because you had to wait for a few people to empty out after shimmying over and thru the EXTRA narrow isles and hallways. The selection is vast and way more than I expected, the pricing is based on some online catalog system they use so you won't know what you're paying until you hand him the records and they go thru and do some research. Once he gives you a sermon on what you bought and then points you in the direction of where some of the other items in relation to what you brought are kept (in an attempt to lure you into buying more). The amount and depth of the vinyl are THEE ONLY GOOD PART OF THE ENTIRE PLACE. I ended up picking three, pretty basic, jazz albums and only those because I wasn't certain of what I was paying. So I hand him the albums an the goes into his rant about what I picked and says "Okay it'll be a few minutes while we get you a price" and points me in the direction of some overly priced "rare albums". I explained to him I'm a listener not a collector. After whatever computer pricing he came up with there was a total of around $130 for three very regular pieces. Quickly I told him that was out of my price range for what I had to which he responded with "Well we're a record store", as if it was an antique mall. I said thanks and walked out. So if you're looking for something exclusive or hard to find vinyl, it's the perfect place. But maybe take some lube and/or a child you're willing to give up for it. Don't expect stellar or even decent service. AND it's Vegas so I wouldn't go looking when it's 100 degrees or better you or the vinyl will melt and he'll probably charge you for that. Tiny, filthy space run by a micromanaging old passive aggressive owner. No wonder people get their records on eBay after visiting this store. After a lengthy introductory monologue from the owner, I realized there are no prices. I feel bad for the poor employee who has to go on Popsike to price every single record - the owner has the last say anyway probably based on if he likes you or not. This store is everything you would hate about a used store. Let me walk you through an experience at wax Trax, and believe me, anyone who has been there before and reads this will agree. The store has been in Las Vegas a long time. And every now and then, I peek in to see if their practices have improved, or if maybe the old man who owns it has kicked off, and maybe someone else is running things. It's never the case. Still the same crusty old man. And listen, I buy a lot of records. And I'm even willing to pay good money for something rare. But I can't do business with this guy. You walk in the store, and it is very narrow and cluttered. It's dark and dingy, and I wouldn't even care about that normally. In fact, I like dusty old stores like this. But upon entry, you're met by an old man who doesn't let the door close behind you before he asks if you've ever been in before so he can ask what you want and to explain the weird tri-level layout of this house-turned-business. Anyway. The first shoppable section is this collection of "new arrivals". If you touch it, he immediately tells you, that's the expensive section. Spoiler alert, the whole store is the expensive section. Well I went into that store a few years ago and found a very rare, but not overly valuable self titled Garth Brooks record. It's a little damaged, I didn't have it in my hand for ten seconds before he spoke up and said, that one is gonna be expensive. He took it, had someone else behind the counter research it and give me a price. He wanted $200 for it. You can get one online for about $100 in excellent condition. This one was in mediocre shape. Probably worth $75 and I would have paid that. I put it back. I continued shopping, and the inventory is massive. And the selection is great. Wanna know why? Because nothing is priced. There are no prices on anything. If you ask for a price, he looks it up online, finds the highest price anywhere online, goes higher than that and that's his price. For everything in the store. There's a $5 section with a small selection of common garbage records like Willie Nelson and Crystal Gayle. Oh. And don't get your phone out while you're in the store. He thinks he's a wise guy and he will confront you on comparing prices against Discogs, which is stupid, because while you should compare prices as a customer, we also use that app to manage our want lists. He just thinks he's calling you out and doesn't want you to think you're being sneaky. It's extremely off putting. Back to today's experience. Like a broken record, pun intended. The exact same experience. And that Garth Brooks record from a year or so ago, it's still there. In the same spot. With the "new arrivals". I tried to shop around, he kept pestering me about what I was in search of, I didn't see anything I wanted so I left. Do yourself a favor-shop somewhere else. He's a jerk, his store is stuffy, and his asking prices are laughably unreasonable. It's why anything he has that's worth anything will still be there tomorrow, and in a year it'll still be there because he wants absolute top dollar for anything he thinks you might want. If you want to buy from a great record store, try Zia in Las Vegas or Record City. In my experience, they have a much better rotating inventory, clearly marked prices, no one pestering you while you shop and the prices are fair. Wax Trax Records, despite having an impressive collection of records for sale, is a store I will not return to. The items for sale are extremely overpriced, and do not have price tags. Rather than being able to see an items price on a sticker, one must pick what they want to buy and bring it to the counter in the front in order to have it priced, the process of which is rather lengthy and irritating. The owners I believe assistant just looks up the record online, and I assume picks the highest price he can find. The pricing process took over 15 minutes. I came to the counter with two records and was quoted $170. I later looked online and found the same two records for less than $80. The owner himself is rather abrasive, demanding to know exactly what you are looking for upon entering, which despite being an attempt to help you locate what you are looking for, comes off as rather unwelcoming. The building is rather cluttered, cramped, and difficult to navigate. I had to squeeze past other people in the cramped rooms multiple times during my visit. Stopped at Wax Trax on a recent trip to Vegas and got a few records. I want to leave the most productive review possible so here goes: 1. If you are a casual listener or looking to buy records in the beginning of a collection, this probably isn't the store for you. You'd be much better off at many other record stores in the Vegas area. 2. If you are a collector looking for a specific pressing of a record from the 50's-70's this place has some absolute gold. Give yourself time to look through everything. The experience here is basically like digging through crates, except with a lot of high value records. 3. Do your research on the albums you want to purchase in store. They do pricing via Discogs and while some people have said they were given bad pricing, I personally found my records to be at completely fair prices. The way I shopped was to find the pressing in the same condition and add it to my Discogs cart so I had pricing to compare when it came to checkout. All the prices lined up for me. I can see in other reviews that they have sort of "sized up" people who visit the store, I guess this didn't happen to me and my demeanor or outfit made it clear they weren't going to get extra money from me or something lol 4. There are some records you may have to inspect three or four copies / variations of to find a clean copy. It's not some pristine collection. While I found many sealed or very good old copies of records here, there's just a lot to go through. It seems clear that this place is almost like a storage unit to the owner. There's lots of stuff and I imagine his personal collection is huge as well. And by lots of stuff I mean it's physically difficult to move within the space. With a team of a handful of people, about 50,000 poly bags and inner liners, and a few weeks of work this place could be legendary. The owner is older and has lots of experience and I doubt he's trying to give his shop a facelift but in the case he reads this, there's a huge opportunity. Everything considered I bought one of my favorite records in my collection here and I'll be visiting every time I'm in Vegas. I don't think this is going to happen to everyone that visits, but if you have a lot of knowledge of records I'd bet you might have the same thing happen for you. read more

I was looking for a Neville Bros LP "Fiyo on the Bayou" so I called Wax Trax. The owner said they have one copy he would sell for $85. Seemed high to me. I found the same title in better condition on Discogs for $35. Wax Trax has more vinyl in one building than I have yet to see anywhere else. Visited Wax Trax for some records for my daughter. We've been to some record stores only to be disappointed with a limited selection. Wax Trax did not disappoint. The selection was the largest that I've seen...ever. This is not your old Sam Goody, Tower Records, etc. This is High Fidelity on steroids. I learn something new about music, the recording industry, pressings you name it every time I visit. The owner and staff are great. WOW....and I mean .....WOW....Every nook and crannie as the proprietor says is for sale.... This is no ordinary " record store" There is memorabilia Everywhere and I mean it like that.... shelves ceilings walls floors.... I went to Wax Trax to fill in a bit of my record collection. This was an amazing place to be, so much knowledge, so much inventory. This is not the place to go to peruse the recent trade-ins or to find some bargin bin. This is a collectors store. Rich was very up front with what this place was and he had the goods. I had gave him a list of stuff I was looking for, Thrill Kill Kult, Revolting Cocks, The Damned, Kiss (Peter Criss solo), Guns and Roses (Appetite original cover, Onigo Boingo, Siouxsie and the Banshees and he had them all. With the Kiss vinyl he made sure the extras like the poster and Kiss army fan club sign up flyer came with it. He even told me a story of how he knew Peter Criss. Not only Vinyl he also had really rare posters and some magazines as well. I often pay Discog prices and all of his were lower and it the more I got the better the prices. There were some rare gems that I had to say no to but he offered to set them aside for a day so I could consider them. If you are open to learn and like to talk and want to spend 2 hours or more discovering amazing titles, this is the place for you. read more

I was looking for a particular gift for my boyfriend. I spent hours in several record stores throughout Las Vegas just looking for one type of Grateful Dead cassette tape. Often times, when record stores aren't corporate owned, they're run by people who who are more like collectors or hoarders, and it can be like a disorganized maze to search through the store. Well I stopped in at this particular store, and it did seem like the place was cluttered with LOTS of vinyl, CD's etc. So I was thinking wow, I'm going to be here for a long time. There were two men behind a counter and I started off by asking them about the particular thing I'm looking for. The man said he did not have the exact Grateful Dead tapes I'm looking for, but he did name a collection of albums by the band, and their exact location in the store. So, they didn't have what I was looking for, but they were very knowledgeable about their products and they saved me a lot of time by telling me up-front what they do and don't have. Plus, they do have a LOT of inventory, so you're likely to find something you enjoy. The parking is a little weird; from the way the GPS directed me, I didn't realize I should turn off the main road and there would be a small parking lot off the side road on the side of the store. However, I am an adult capable of adapting to situations, and as long as the parking is not a danger zone or full of garbage (like the dollar tree on lake mead in summerlin- EW) , I don't see why people find the need to be so particular about it in their Yelp reviews. read more

I was so excited walking in to this place. The selection is HUGE! It was like a music collector's paradise- until I got their prices. First off, there are no prices on anything. I've been to other businesses that operate this way and it's super annoying. How do you know if you want something or not if you don't know how much it costs? And it makes you feel as if you're walking into a haggling situation - which you are. Music shopping is a leisure activity for me- I don't want it to be stressful. Just put a price on it and let me decide if I want it or not before I pull it off the shelf and waste everyone's time. I was telling a friend about my experience here and she said "if there's no price tag, that means it's too expensive ". Boy was she right! The guy who I assume was the owner said they look the items up on Discogs, take the middle price, and discount a little off of that. Well you can see in the screen shots I posted - from Discogs- that that's not the case at all. I didn't buy one single thing I pulled off the shelf because the prices had no basis in reality whatsoever. So It was a waste of everyone's time and you can tell the guy was miffed that I didn't buy anything. It's a shame because as I was browsing I was thinking that I could see myself coming here every weekend and spending hundreds of dollars, but instead I will never be back. After this visit, I have now been to every record store in town. The ones I would recommend are both Zia locations, and Record City on Sahara. I've been going to Zia twice a week for months now (once a week at each location) and spending $150-200 each time, but I think I've now covered their entire inventory so I've been looking for a new place to spend my $. It won't be Wax Trax. If the guy would have just done what he said he was going to in regards to the prices, I would have spent a couple hundred, we would all be happy, and I would be back next weekend to do the same. On another note, there's no way this place meets fire code. There's junk all over the place, blocking walkways and stairs. In one room there's a fan cord over the length of the floor which I tripped on and the fan fell over. I heard a shout from downstairs "did you break anything??!" After posting my review, I started reading the others. I should have done that before going and saved myself some time. I don't feel bad at all now about my review after seeing so many other people with the same or worse experiences. In fact, my 2 stars was probably generous. My guess is at some point in his life, these sales tactics worked for the guy and he's still trying to run the same game - maybe he was on the strip back before the internet existed and it wasn't so easy for customers to check real prices? read more

This store can be summed up as the Comic Book Guy from "The Simpsons" runs a record store. First off, the praise, it has an incredible selection of used audio (vinyl, cassettes, CDs and even reel-to-reel). Many of the items are in great condition. Due to the large selection it earns the extra star. Now the bad. The owner is the Comic Book Guy personified. He has to quiz you and set up rules upon entering the store. It seems as if he is must give you permission to look at his record collection. My son found three records by Green Day that he wanted to purchase, all used. The record prices were $50, $60 and $100. None of the records had a price on them and had to be looked up on the internet. The $100 record was "a great deal" as someone had listed the record on EBay for a high of $120, according to the owner. I later checked a similar record sold for $15.73 with $10 shipping on another website. The most egregious part was this record had a coffee cup stain on the cover. My wife also found a record by Randy Travis, it was $20. We went to Zia Records on Rainbow and found the exact same record for $2.99 and in even better condition. I would say it is nice to check out vintage audio but it is essentially like walking into a hoarder's home.
