I've never had a bad experience with Wayback in Middletown. I've switched from frequenting Wendy's for a burger to going here instead. The quality is 10x better. Of course, it's still fast food so manage your expectations. With that being said I always get a plain single because I'm basic when it comes to burgers but man, they do it right every time and it's always good. Buns are never squished or soggy. Burger is never over or under cooked. Cheese is melty. It really is always a hit! I usually order to go or have it delivered however I have stopped in to sit down a few times. I was in Middletown and needed a quick bite to eat for lunch, so I stopped off at his Wayback Burgers. I came in and quickly placed my order. I went with the chicken tenders, a side of fries and a chocolate milkshake. Not too hard or complicated of an order, but it took 20-25 minutes for the food to come out. I understand that that there are staffing shortages right now, so it is understandable, but that is still quite long. To make matters worse, when my chicken fingers and fries came out they ended up giving them to another customer, who had ordered buffalo tenders. Therefore, I had to wait for a new order to be made. However, the staff was nice about it and gave me some extra chicken tenders to makeup for the inconvenience. That is a big plus when it comes to customer service. Eventually, the food came out and it was hot and fresh. In fact, it was so hot that I had to wait so it would cool off. However, the tenders and fries were tasty. In addition, the milkshake, which was brought out a little earlier, was creamy and tasty. Very good! Overpriced, poor quality and lacking service. There was an issue with our order - I paid online and he could not match the order to my receipt. Only by calling a 1800 number could I resolve this according to Wayback. Finally he called an offsite manager who was able to find that indeed our food was paid for and ready. The cooking area looked dirty by the stove. The burgers were ok but not worth $10 each. The rest of the food sucked. The fries were soggy. This is my first review and I just wanted to say I normally really like Wayback but I've gone to this one 4 or 5 times and every time it lets me down. Fries and tots always soggy and never crispy and the burgers always look so depressing and mushed together. This is probably the best burger joint in town--not anymore. I walked into this establishment a littler after 7PM on a Saturday, 11/16/19--it was extremely busy. (Typical) The owners, husband and wife, and one other employee were frantically trying to put orders together, it was evident that they were short staff and was unprepared to handle the crowd. Longer story short, I walked in when the owner told a customer at the register that she wouldn't be taking orders for another 30 mins so I went ahead and sat down. A group of boys come in 15 mins after she had made that statement and she told them she was not taking ANYMORE orders tonight--they close at 9. (It was 7:25ish) The owners did not acknowledge my PRESENCE or the fact that I had sat down at the same time as the lady who they told would have to wait 30 mins--she got to order. I was too baffled to say anything. Instead, I got up and left. I'm actually glad I didn't order anything because the way they were touching the fridge, their clothes, and other things and preparing people's burgers with the same gloves was actually unsanitary--I'm all set. Came here with my son, we both got burgers. I got tater tots on the side, he got Mac and cheese bites. Everything was cooked fast and was absolutely delicious! Decided to try this place out, since I was in search of a good burger that wasn't from the usual place. Ordered at the counter for take out. Watched the man cook burgers while I waited. I was shocked to see the burger that began as a fat juicy promise was squeezed to about a 1/2 inch thick by this cook. Everyone knows you aren't supposed to do that to beef. It removes all the juice and flavor! Also watched someone else's order removed from the grill and allowed to sit a good five minutes before being plated and served to the waiting family. Food used to be so good. But they must of changed owners and it's so disgusting! I ordered a salad which I used to get all the time cause it was so good and it was so gross. It had a bunch of water on the bottom of the box because they just rinsed the lettuce and threw it in the box without drying it. Fast food? Definitely not. Worth the wait? Nope. Had ~1hr to kill with my 10 year old son who was getting hangry. After ordering our food we sat and waited... and waited.... and waited. I checked my receipt and the timestamp was 1:07 PM. It was now 1:27 PM and I, nor anyone else who'd ordered after me, were getting any food quick. Finally, at 1:35, our order was ready. Bit into a bun that was toasted on the outside, and ice cold on the inside--despite having 28 minutes between ordering and getting food. Burger itself had a faint taste of freezer burn, and was also lukewarm. Fries (also lukewarm) tasted like the oil in the fryer was well over 3,000 miles. My son's shake also tasted like freezer-burned ice cream. Maybe they had a power outage and lost refrigeration for awhile, and everything refroze... I don't know, but that was one of the worst "fast food" meals ever. Eighteen bucks for two burgers, 1 small fries, a soda (that tasted like chlorine from the city water--but I digress) and a shake, 80 percent of which went in the trash. If I wasn't trying to get to an event at Weslyan I would have complained to the staff, but I get the feeling they wouldn't have cared. Came in around closing time (8:45pm) on Saturday. The guy at the register was very polite and patient while my kids figured out what to eat. They were so patient that I didn't realize I walked in so close to closing time. The food was fantastic. I loved the chili fries and my kids enjoyed the chips and the double bacon burgers. The price was reasonable for the area and the quality of food, it was cheaper than our usual spots like buffalo wild wings. My past experiences at the Old Saybrook branch was not good but this location atmosphere was very positive. We loved the food/service and their phrase "See you on the Wayback" was too funny. On March 21 2024 around 3:45pm My Wife and Iwere looking for a place to get a Hot Dog so we ended up at Guidas or Rte 66 Middlefield. They only take CASH for payment we were Bummed.so we Google HotDogs and got Wayback On Main St Middletown where Baskins Robbins use to be located back in the day anyways,We both ordered Chili Dog with cheese and Raw onions,with Onion Rings and sodas.prices were very reasonable it came to about $19.75.When we received our food the Hot Dog was completely covered with cheese sauce and the Bun was drenched soggy.Their was enough cheese to make a cup of cheese soup that's how much cheese was on 1 Hot dog.Who puts that much cheese on. A normal cheese is 2 tablespoons full .ONIONRINGS WERE GOOD .We ended up eating the hot dog with a fork as bun was too soggy to even eat.I will not return to this place nor recommend. The inside of restaurant could be cleaned a little better as was dusty windows could use washing in and out as well as the clear spit guard going around cooking area. read more

First, I just want to say that the people working here were wonderful. The woman taking the food orders was very polite and amiable, calling customers "Hon." They were also very hard working and, considering the circumstances, very efficient, which leads me to my main, and only real, complaint: The restaurant was understaffed. There were only two people, one taking orders and one making the food. I was there during the lunch crunch and the place was getting crowded. They should have had at least 4 people working there, two at the cash registers and two cooks. That being said, I was quite happy with my burger, which was nicely done and made exactly the way I wanted it. The fries were super good. In case anyone is interested, they have a Triple Triple Burger, which looks like something Dagwood Bumstead would order (very large, with I think 7 paddies). It sells for $18.99. I also noticed that they have a Triple Triple Challenge. I'm guessing that if one person can eat it all in one sitting, it's free. My first Wayback and it left a good impression! It doesn't necessary have anything special apart from their 'heart-attack' triple triple burger (which has 9 patties!). But I had the crispy chicken BLT which was great. Their onion rings and mac and cheese bites had good flavor and weren't too salty. Living in Middletown, I would definitely go back soon. It was very disappointing for my first time in. It seemed like the girl at the register was very new. I ordered the double bacon cheese burger but asked to change the cheese. Therefore she changed it to a customised burger (I assumed asking for the bacon burger implied that we were customizing the bacon burger). So, no bacon, and half of the other toppings werent included; ketchup, mustard, mayo. The other employees seemed to be very deligent and hard at work. I understand if your new and still learning, but no manager should leave that employee alone until they are better trained. The disappointment is with the management, not the employees. National Burger day... Well Wayback forces you to order via app and does not clearly identify that it is the "Cheesy" that is on special and not the "Classic". When I get there, the manager blames the app as to why she cannot edit the order, which she made a point to tell me that they had not started the order yet, because I was early. Hmmm lost points for that. The two guys working there, are very nice and made a point to come to the dining area to bring my order out. Where in the world has customer service gone? I will gladly pay a reward if someone can tell me where it is hiding.. UPDATE... I spoke with the manager before I left and she apologized in more than one way. They sent only one soda when I paid for and ordered 2 and the soda was the wrong kind. They were rude when I called and hung up on me. The problem with this Wayback is understaffing. Plus, I think, poor training and general lack of planning when this site was opened in Middletown. That said, I have eaten here numerous times. The burgers are good, pricey, but good. The fries are okay. The shakes are thick and creamy. The location is just not conducive to fun dining. They needed a wider, larger dining area. My friends and I are in CT for the day. We stopped by a PHO restaurant next door but there were no people eating and we took a 180 turn and saw this burger place. Let me tell ya, coming from NY, wayback was one of the best burgers we've had! You can tell that no frozen patties nor veggies. Everything was fresh!! Staff was very friendly and corteous!
