The service wasn't great but the curly fries Mac and cheese with pork belly was pretty good but maybe too salty

After a long night out in fed, I was in dire need of a good brunch spot. I decided to give Wayward a try. It was less than 24 hours since I had made an appearance there, but felt drawn to be back so soon. It being a southern kitchen, I knew I'd get homey, comforting dishes, which could cure any hangover (at least temporary). Anyways after extensively looking at the menu, I ordered the pig & cow omelet, which had bacon, cheddar and four slices of nice, tender brisket on top. It came with a side of potatoes which were pretty good. My one complaint would be that the omelet could have been a little fluffier, mine came out a little flat and slightly over cooked. In addition, my friend ordered the chicken & waffle, which was covered in their homemade sausage gravy. The fried chicken was cooked perfectly and the sweet maple syrup paired nicely to form the perfect bite. A different take on chicken and waffle, but can't say I was disappointed. I had a great meal here. We came here for happy hour on a Friday and there was a decent amount of people. I had their crabcake sandwich which was really good, one of the better ones that I have had. There was not a lot of filler and It was perfectly broiled. We had crushes there as well and I would highly recommend them. They were excellent, definitely the best one I have had!! read more

Dined here and had drinks with Carley one day and came back tonight for a tasty refreshing drink from the Jamie and Carley; by the way I fell in love with them the first day I dined and had the buffilao wings!! Crowded, overpriced food and drinks, small portions, poor service, too many other (better) options to waste time here

This place has such a refreshing atmosphere to it, and it is pretty different from any of the other spots around the neighborhood. I came here for lunch and some cold drinks, and was pleased with what was offered and what I ordered. I am a big fan of their crushes, which actually have fruit in them (unlike many places around who call their drinks "crushes" and simply serve you cheap liquor with fruit syrup in them) and are extremely refreshing. I also tried their poutine, which was very unique and tasty. Overall, this is a great place to visit for food during the day or some drinks at night. read more

The atmosphere was very cool and there was a ton of room. However, our service was VERY slow. We sat and wait for what seemed like forever. The menu was limited (for brunch) and a bit pricey, and if you have any dietary restrictions (I.e. Gluten-free or vegan), there are not many options at all. read more

Got the crab sandwich special, and it was really good; on a sub roll with lots of crab meat. Good service; sat at the bar and the bartender got me everything I needed. Might be able to improve the sandwich by either by torching the top, or broiling it to heat it up and get a nice char. read more

Took the train from Baltimore to DC, had a great meal at Roy Boys then found our way here. Sat had a few drinks and played cards on the couch area. Very cool theme they have going. Will be back for food! read more

I loved this place! We were a little skeptical walking in, since we had never been before, but the food and service were amazing. The decor is a little western meets hipster, which I thought was cool. We were waited on by a couple of different people, which meant that we never had to wait long for anything. We were grabbing dinner and drinks before heading to a show, and were pleasantly surprised by the food. I had the BLT, which was served with a generous portion of fries. My friends had the Wayward Burger (which was huge), the Roast Beef sandwich, and the spring chicken salad. All looked great, and were enjoyed. Went here this morning for a post bachelorette brunch. I had been wanting to try this place since it became Wayward. It did not disappoint. Mimosa was delicious, my friends loved the Bloody Mary bar. It was lacking olives, which is a key ingredient, but they loved the other toppings. Our waiter/bartender was great- forget his name but he was tan, slim, with tattoos and an industrial piercing. We loved him! All the food was excellent- specifically the biscuits, the grits (must try), breakfast potatoes, and homemade jelly. I'm vegetarian, so I can't speak on the rest of the food- but all the girls loved it. Music was perfect- reggae. Definitely coming back. Thanks for the great service and excellent food. read more

Got a drink with a date after lunch at the local fry, the drinks here were fine, our bartender was nice, the place was clean. Happy hour prices are good. Only complaint is overhearing your staff join in with other patrons on making sexual comments about a girl across the street. Super unprofessional, and made me uncomfortable. We spent about 3 hours here with 6 friends. Quick, great service through out. Waitress was knowledgeable and opinionated about dishes we asked about and that was appreciated. The Mac balls were an experience. We also ordered the cheesesteak fries and omg the queso, fries and peppers all together...bomb. Entrees were a variety of bbq sandwiches and plates of pulled pork, brisket, ribs and smoked chicken. Sides of Mac n cheese, cornbread and rosemary fries. Rave reviews all around. A few weeks ago, I stopped in to Wayward during happy hour to grab a few drinks with my buddies after work. Several bartenders greeted us immediately and were extremely friendly. They informed us of their new happy hour menu which consists of several different types of mules, draft beers and a wide variety of food options. I tried the Manhattan Mule which was absolutely delicious. We all ordered food, I had the hush puppies, pretzels with beer cheese and brisket mac all of which was amazing. I felt right at home as all of the food is traditional BBQ. We ended up staying the entire night and really enjoyed ourselves. I definitely will be coming back to check out more of the weekly specials. I highly recommend stopping in and checking this place out! read more

Wayward smokehouse has the rudest bartenders you could ever have. If they happen to serve you they will not tell you the normal price. They will cheap you out of everything and be rude while they do it. Do not ever visit this establishment. read more

Stopped in with a co-worker for lunch. Food and service both excellent. Federal Hill has been lacking quality restaurants that offer fresh and interesting food and a cool vibe and decor. Finally a place to go that is not just a bar! I loved the decor, menu, and the most importantly the taste of the food. Easy to to tell they smoke their sausage in house and everything we had was fresh. So happy that I stopped in and will spread the word!!!! read more

Best wings I've ever had - perfectly smoked, the meat comes right off the bone (order the house dry rub). Also had the brisket, pulled pork and pulled chicken which all rival the best BBQ of the south. We've been here twice and I want to love it soooo bad, but it's not quite there yet. First, the space is gorgeous. It's a mashup of modern & rustic decor with clean lines and an overall welcoming feel. The food can be classified as "elegant smokehouse BBQ" (if such classification exists!), however their preparation of their food items is inconsistent. The first time there, I ordered deviled eggs and the texture of the filing was creamy and delicious but the pork rind on top was a super weird and chewy texture. The second time I went, I ordered that same dish (I really love deviled eggs!), and the pork rind was nice and crispy but the filling was SUPER runny to the point that it could barely stay in the egg. The husb ordered the brisket mac both times and it too, was prepared inconsistently. Once with brisket just on the top (it comes in a cute mason jar) and another time with brisket layered in the middle of the mason jar topped with another layer of mac/brisket. I'm not sure which was the correctly prepared way. The dry rub wings were delicious, and I into thumb wrestle my husb to decide who would get the last one. Haha! The service was just OK. We sat at the bar once and the bartender wasn't really attentive which was weird because we were right in his face. I'm not sure if he was having a bad day or just not a chatty person, but this left much to be desired in the service-arena. SERVICE HERE IS AWFUL! I am not sure who took over, but they managed to fire just about every server that CNR had and hire an all girl staff that can't be over the age of 22. I live down the street and my friends and I used to frequent CNR, so we have tried Wayward a few times. Every time is the same. I refuse to go back. Food isn't great, yet it's more expensive. Go to literally any other bar/restaurant in a half block radius and the service will be great, I promise. read more

We ordered the Pork Poutine at the start with the intention of trying some of the meats and maybe even the Brisket Mac & Cheese, but the $10 poutine was so big that it became the entire meal for two people (and the entire week's allotment of sodium). Not a bad value! I was expecting it to be an appetizer, but the menu headings are more cute than they are helpful. "Sams" was the heading for "Sandwiches"? Still, the overall experience was positive. At one point we had two servers, and in lieu of a beer list, one of the servers made a trip to the bar to find out more information about some of the offerings. The bartenders here steal your money from the bar if you take to long to order another drink. I've never seen this in my life. When I called the bartender out on taking my money he knew exactly how much I had on the bar. I seen him do it numerous times to plenty of people. read more

Service was spot on. Was greeted almost immediately after sitting down. Drinks came quickly, and water was served without asking. Appetizers were cooked well, the meat was tender and the Mac and cheese cheesy. The ribs fell off the bone, with no fat. The other meat dishes were cooked to perfection. This place was awesome. It was extremely crowded when we went but managed to find two spots in the back of the bar. Although we were offered a menu with the drinks listed the server asked what we were in the mood for and suggested two wonderful drinks (whiskey lovers). Before we had to chance to taste our drinks our waitress came over and took our order. The honey-chipotle wings had the perfect balance of sweet and heat.We also got the buffalo chicken salad (the cornbread croutons were perfect for the salad) and the wayward burger with whiskey poached pear!!! The Mac and cheese was good. But other than that this place was a big disappointment. Bloody Mary tastes like cold tomato soup, pork belly was over done and burnt. Cornbread wasn't cooked even close to being done. Bbq sauce on the chicken was horrible, so sweet it was difficult to eat. Grits are fine but they aren't southern grits so if you are used to those then don't bother, they have an almost pungent flavor to them. I'm so excited about this addition to the Federal Hill neighborhood! I've been a handful of times in the last month and I can honestly say that it really does just keep getting better every single time! The atmosphere is very inviting and unlike anything else I've seen/experienced in this area especially (and trust me when I say that I've done my fair share of bar hopping in this neighborhood over the years). I was delightfully surprised with the interior space, and the careful attention to detail that went into the re-branding of this establishment. They also have an outdoor patio too! (I'm not going to hate on what this place was previously, but I do think this is a really nice change of scenery). I'd like to hire these guys to come decorate my home too haha On another note - the food really is delicious, and I have to say that the smoked brisket mac & cheese and cornbread are out of this world and by far my favorite. But I won't say no to some smoked boar sausage either :) Lastly, they have LIVE MUSIC on some evenings! I'm a sucker for that, and think it really adds to the fun, laid back vibe there. This place should get no stars from me. There was an incident that took place last Saturday night where my daughter and her friend were manhandled and disrespected as women for no apparent reason by a bouncer. There was no fight that they were involved in or any immediate threat to warrant any man to put their hands on these two young ladies. Around 130am I received a hysterical call from my daughter informing me of the incident of assault from the bouncer and how they were called obscene names with racial content. As a mother this unacceptable. We have called to speak with management about the incident and no one has returned our call. The unprofessionalism and lack of response speaks volumes. A bouncer is supposed to try to defuse any disruption not initiate it. There is no reason for any man to put their hands on a woman and shout vulgar and degrading insults. This will be escalated...there are bruises and video to show what happened. Unacceptable! I don't know if these people have daughters but I am sure you would not stand for ANY ONE treating your daughters in this manner so why would you think it's ok to treat someone else's as such. read more

I've been in here a couple times for drinks, but never had an opportunity to try the menu until last week and boy was I disappointed. I absolutely love bbq and Wayward's menu looked right up my alley. I got the "Plate O' Meat" with brisket, ribs, and pork belly. The food took forever to come out, but I had no problem with that, hoping it meant they were making the food fresh. I soon found out that was not the case at all. The ribs were tough and gristly, not like you would expect at any bbq joint. The pork belly was all fat, literally no meat, but it smelled good. The brisket may have been the worst of all. It was so dry that it was impossible to eat and resembled jerky rather than bbq brisket. All of my friends that were with me had a similar experience with their choices. I thought about adding an extra star for the huge portions, but I don't think putting more horrible quality food on the plate makes it any better. I really wanted to like this place, but sadly won't be back to eat. read more
