Recent birthday visit. Busy for a Saturday with one section completely filled. Our waitress was prompt with our drinks. She recommended the Reuben but the smell of seafood in the air had me order the blackened haddock on a spinach wrap with fries and coleslaw. I was not disappointed. The haddock was fresh and melted in my mouth. Perfectly seasoned. The fries were hot and crisp. The coleslaw was sweeter than I like but still good. Our waitress stole the show with her bubbly personality. If you are in the area stop in definitely with the trip. read more

Weathervane always has delicious food and thoughtfully prepared Maine menu items. I actually recognize some of the older Maine recipes from my grandmother's cooking I got to experience in the early 80's. Service is wonderful, and the ambiance is perfect Maine lake-life in a small town! Nice local bands sometimes play upstairs. Downstairs is a more casual atmosphere for trivia nights and more appropriate atmosphere for dining with children. We love the Weathervane! Side note, the Weathervane has been in existence since at least the 1950's, when it was a simple hot dog stand at Readfield beach. read more

This Restaurant might be the best. I had the Prime Rib. My sis had the crab cakes. My niece had pasta primavera and her husband had the ribs. I tried everything and it was amazing. For appetizers I highly recommend the fried mushrooms. (10+). We also had the Spinach/Artichoke dip with toasted garlic bread. Amazing. The waiter was fantastic and the drinks were great. Then, after an amazing meal, we went downstairs and sang some Karaoke. If you are in the Winthrop/Readfield region I give this place a 10+. It's a must. read more

I've had a great exchange with the owner, June and understand the issues surrounding my previous unpleasant experience. I get it and have worked in the restaurant business in the past. This was the worst visit to a restaurant I've honestly ever experienced. We arrived at 530pm and were told 45 minutes. Asked for drinks and put in an appetizer order and went outside to wait. 45 minutes turned into almost 2 hours. See there was a woman singing to recorded music and people didn't leave their tables. We checked on our table multiple times and were told 10 minutes or so. We watched as multiple parties that arrived after us were seated and eating. We weren't. So once we're were finally seated the waitress greeted us and let us know "just need to let you know that we are running about and hour and a half to get your food out." What? Oh, they let us know this was all because of a private party downstairs. But there wasn't a private party, just 2 large tables. This was a management issue and they did nothing, offered nothing except to let us know salads might come out quicker (it was only and hour.) all of this wasn't the waitresses issue. We actually felt bad for her Pic below was the men's bathroom. Classy. I'll be glad not to go back to the Vane again. Title of worst experience ever earned! read more

The atmosphere was clean, casual and cozy. We dined inside but tables were available outside with a lake view. We had our hearts set on lobster as it was listed on the marquee as a special. Unfortunately, the waiter came back to inform us that the last of the lobster had just been ordered and they were out. Begrudgingly, we opted for the lobster roll. It was absolutely delicious but not quite what we had wanted...it was a sandwich for the same price as the broiled lobster dinner. I thought it was a bit expensive for a handful of lobster meat as I dont normally eat white bread. Like I said, the food was very good although a bit pricey. Our disappointment eventually faded as we were pleasantly entertained by the extremely friendly and attentive waiter. The staff as a whole were awesome! We will definitely be going back! read more

I have been driving past this place for years and wondering whether it was a good place for dinner, but never had the chance to stop in. Recently some friends suggested that we meet there and I finally got my chance to check it out. I was so glad they did! Unfortunately, I left my phone at home so couldn't take pictures, but the decor reminded me of a ski lodge, complete with moose head over the fireplace. We went a few weeks after Christmas, and the holiday decorations were tasteful and sweet. We were loving the atmosphere and the friendly service. The salmon encrusted with maple walnuts was just to die for - maybe the best salmon I have ever had. My husband said his shrimp scampi was a bit oily, but not bad. Our friends had salad and a chicken dish, and said each was good. Now that I know there's such an enjoyable restaurant close to home, we will be spending more time there - maybe next time on a night when the band is playing downstairs! read more

The new owners have taken the Weathervane up another notch! It is simply great food and wonderful service. We have a new favorite spot. Music during dinner was great upstairs. The bar downstairs is fun and welcoming with events of karaoke and trivia. The prices are reasonable for the fare with plenty of options. The drinks are well done. The view is amazing, and the friendly warm atmosphere is wonderful. Go here for a nice dinner but get a reservation because the locals know its good. read more

Definitely improved and the staff are 5 star. I also appreciate that they have tasty non-alcoholic beer available. Entrees are generous but not overwhelming and most come with a nice side salad and potatoes, sweet potatoes or rice. A great local option especially for those of us who live nearby. We weren't so sure about this place, since it only had 9 reviews, but our lunch was excellent! We had a wedge salad to start. It comes topped with crispy bacon and diced tomatoes and the blue cheese dressing is excellent! We ordered a steak and cheese sandwich and a pulled pork sandwich (special) to share. We loved them both. The buns are soft and doughy and both came topped with melted cheese. Mackenzie was our waitress and she was so sweet and helpful. My party arrived a few minutes either side of 6:00 PM. By the time I left in exasperation at 8:05 PM we still had not been served our meals. That's just unacceptable and inexcusable. It can't possibly take over 2 hours to put together a Waldorf salad. How Weathervane ever got a good reputation is a mystery based upon how we were treated. They comped us. Big deal. Two beers and and a fried mushroom appetizer. In summary, I'm NEVER going back, not even if they paid for my gasoline. There are plenty of restaurants out there vying for my money and I'm not dropping my cash in a place with substandard service. read more

I am new to the area (Kennebec County) and have been checking out area restaurants to bring friends & family to when they come to visit and explore. What a GREAT find this restaurant turned out to be!! The service (Trudy especially), the food, and the ambiance were wonderful. There is lovely artwork by a local artist on the walls and books by local writers by the windowsill. A large moose head hangs above the fireplace, adding to the Maine feel and vibe. The place was clean and the young man bussing the tables was adorable, pleasant, friendly & did his job well. I had the baked haddock and a piece of blueberry pie. My family shared ONE stuffed mushroom with me (that's all I could talk them into sharing because they were LOVING them). I think next time I go there (and there WILL be a next time), I am going to get an entire serving of stuffed mushrooms for myself... they were FANTASTIC!! Our only feedback/criticism would be the small portion sizes in relationship to the prices. I personally felt the haddock filet was good sized; however, my side dish of sweet potato fries was small, but they were very delicious. I prefer quality over quantity when dining. Folks at the table felt Weather Vane's quality was excellent, but the quantity was bordering on the "too small." We poked our heads in to check out the karaoke downstairs, and that looks like a blast.... next time :-) We all highly recommend checking out this little gem. It is worth the trip. The service was fantastic, felt like family in just a few minutes, On a fall day with not too much if a crowd, everyone seemed to know each other. Decor is a throwback, wood paneling, cool, and great views over the water on this fall day. Traditional comfort food and seafood menu, Mia had chicken parm and buffalo wings, Kim had braised pork, I had a great spinach cob salad with their homemade blue cheese dressing and baked haddock. This was probably my fifth time there this season. Had a reservation. Apparently you can not reserve outside but it was obvious two large parties had reserved a large amount of seating on the porch. The alternative was a way too cold basement that smelled awful or picnic benches outside. I'm not about to sit at a picnic bench and pay those prices! Very disappointed! Tried this place a few times before making a proper decision. Food always take an hour plus to come out and isn't high quality, lots of frozen product. Seems like they can't keep staff either. Came here to grab dinner and do some trivia. I'm visiting from out of town we ordered our food at about 645pm and it's 815pm currently and still haven't received any food. I have never been to a restaurant where I've waited over and hour and a half for food. This is completely unacceptable I'm surprised this place is still in business. Living nearby, I took the family there on a semi regular basis (once or twice a month). Sam the waiter was always great and while the food was a bit pricey, it was always good. It was my wife's birthday and we hadn't been there in a bit so i decided to take her out to the Weathervane. We were early enough that seating wasn't an issue and as we were looking over the menu a guy and gal began setting up sound equipment under the moose head. We placed our order and that's when it all went down hill. The noise from the 2 performers was way too much. I sat down to try and enjoy a meal with my bride and we couldn't even talk to each other. We couldn't hear the waitress and she couldn't hear us. We asked her to turn down the noise (yelling in her ear) but it changed very little. Then the musicians invited "cousin Steve" to come up and sing. I can only describe him as a nasally voiced version of Willie Nelson. We couldn't get out of there fast enough and have not and will not go back. I'll gladly go west and eat at the Chuck Wagon instead. read more

We recently moved to Readfield from New York City. We were curious as to whether there would be a place close to home that we could enjoy. The restaurant was only short walk from our front door so there was great potential for this to be our, "go to " place. We were not disappointed. The menu was as you would expect offering an acceptable selection of apps, soups and salads. Nothing earth shattering here. But it was the special's menu that caught us off guard. We were so impressed! There were real, high quality items as entree choices, all made with local ingredients and home cooked. The meals we ate were delicious. I am 100% gluten free, so my choices were limited on this 1st visit and I was limited to a salad, steak, potato and steamed veggies. My wife however, was treated to a broiled haddock filet, with lemon, white wine, garlic and mushrooms. She raved about it. For dessert, I was able to indulge a bit. They offer a multitude of freshly made pies and cakes. My (gluten free) choice was the french silk pie made with a pure, baked coconut pie crust. OMG, it was so good, i took one home too. I rarely get to have dessert when we eat out so this was special. After we finished our bottle of wine, which we selected carefully from a well priced list of well known, (restaurant darling's), we retired to the bar/lounge area situated downstairs. Walking down the stairs and hearing the music and the crowd gave a real, "speak easy" feel. Remember, we are in as rural Maine as you get and we just moved here from Mid-Town Manhattan. Needless to say our expectations were set quite low. The lounge was packed. It was Saturday evening around 9pm and we didn't realize that there was a separate entrance and parking lot around the back of this lakeside gem. The music was top 40 and played by an energetic live band that featured a lead singer that somewhat resembled our hostess. That's right, the restaurant is family owned and the entire family is musically inclined. We popped another cork and were treated to classic versions of some of our favorite songs from the 70's, 80's and from today. Our evening at The Weathervane could not have been more enjoyable. We stayed for several hours and get back there as often as date night will permit. We highly recommend the Weathervane for anyone who enjoys good food, quality ingredients, warm atmosphere and the chance to make new friends at wonderfully warm, lakeside diamond! Gene read more

This is by far the greatest atmosphere I've been in. The entire staff including the owners are unexplainably heartfelt and find time to chat extra with their customers to ensure everything is going the way they would like. The food is amazing and there's not a thing I can complain about. Not to mention the beautiful lake view from the gorgeous sitting deck and even from inside the dining room. It's a dingy dive bar. The owner is an alcoholic and treats his patrons poorly. The drink choices are limited and rarely change, the service is fair to slow, however I've been told the food is decent. I have had too many experiences with the owner treating people with disrespect that I can't in good conscience recommend this place. I give it two stars because it has the potential to be a decent place to eat a meal and have a drink if management changes its mannerisms and decides to not be a raging alcoholic. read more

Being from Hartford, CT and unfamiliar to the are, we weren't sure what to expect based on the previous reviews amounting to less than 10. At the Weathervane We were greeted by 2 very informative and warm staff members and decided to sit downstairs in the lounge. It definitely has a distinct odor which should be taken care of! but we were highly impressed with the food and were able to make fast friends with Meghan the bartender. Then to our surprise, a band started playing that we couldn't believe we hadn't paid a cover to see. They were awesome! And we enjoyed the night feasting and continuing to make Maine friendships. We are scheduled to meet friends there again at the end of the week. read more

Omg! Come at least once per year and this place runs hot and cold. Tonight's menu and service were awesome. Melted Brie with a warm baguette and apple slices was perfect as was the artichoke and Parmesan dip with crostini's. Had the seafood casserole and they didn't scrimp on the lobster. The one negative was the salmon was a bit on the dry side. Carrot cake is enough for 2. Kristen was a great waitress, great personality, didn't hover. She was fun.
