This is a review of the hot foods section. I am having a large banquet soon so I am trying chinese foods before I order large trays of food. This is my first time eating there. Fried rice 3/5 Chow mein 3/5 Beef and broccoli 4/5 Roasted pig with white rice 4/5 Orange chicken 4/5 The lady serving the food was nice. The line was getting long and she was the only person working though. I will come back here to buy the whole roasted pig for my party. Private parking lot. Decently clean for an Asian grocery store. The hot foods section is pretty good. It's pretty clean for the most part. The hot foods is the best you can get for the price. They have several catering options as well. Must order prior and pay prior to day of for pick up. The lady at the hot foods place is super nice! Be forewarned, if you're rude, she'll be rude right back (I witnessed it myself, though fortunately was not on the receiving end). They have quite a variety of produce, frozen items, drinks, alcohol, meat, etc as well. The ice cream section is pretty stacked! Lots of the trending ice cream and popsicles. My pick for hot foods is the Roasted Pig (they sell a whole one by preordering or they also have smaller options to buy just for lunch), Salt & Pepper Chicken Wings, and Salt & Pepper Shrimp. The fried rice needs a bit of soy sauce, but it's pretty decent on its own. I would not choose the Spare Ribs. It's a little dry in my opinion. The eggrolls was crispy, but lacked flavor. The chow mein is edible. Not bad, but nothing to brag about. Again, add soy sauce. What I really like about this place is that everything is not too salty like most other Chinese spots I've been to. I like that you can add soy sauce to enhance the flavor, but it's not already on there so I can enjoy it as well as my children and parents (who prefer more bland food). 100% RECOMMEND EVERYONE TO SHOP HERE, best asian supermarket and they're more friendly than most (trust me). I always come here to buy ingredients because they have the freshest meats, seafood and veggies. Love how they also sell pork skin without fat and fat on it too. They have the best prices on alcohol in Sacramento too. Came here to get a bottle to engrave and the business owner so KIND, PATIENT, and HUMBLE helped me engrave a bottle to a family member. I love how this supermarket is also INVOLVED in the community. They give back alot too and aren't greedy so that's a plus. This store is very clean, professional and they offer a WIDE VARIETY of snacks and drinks. Its always a good experience coming here. The food is good too, I would say better than the other hot foods you would get at an asian supermarket (especially SF). read more

A great grocery store. One stop shop. Vegetables and fruits are mostly fresh but I usually skip it. Meat is great. I usually come here for the fresh seafood and hot foods available. Ready to eat food at an affordable price. At the back they have Chinese food and they also have a case already packaged. If you follow their instagram, they usually update what new items they have in. It usually gets busy after I get off work so around 5pm. & during holidays. Staff is amazing with helping. read more

This review is for the chinese food to go. The supermarket, as a whole, was clean and organized. I haven't been here in a while but I was in the neighborhood and decided to get a quick lunch to go. They have a nice selection of Chinese food, fish, chicken and pork yo choose from. I got a 2 item combo. I got the mushroom zucchini chicken and sweet and sour pork with chow mein and fried rice. The sweet and sour pork was too mushy for me and the rice was a little stale/hard. I'll probably try other items next time. read more

I go here a lot to buy lunch but 1) HAIR in BOTH foods that's completely wrapped separately. 2) they told me that there's ground pork in the dumplings but it's SHRIMP. There was also hair in my food i didn't even notice until i tried to bite the 2nd time. someone could really have a bad day if they were allergic to seafood and was told it was pork. I went there yesterday in the pouring rain because I was craving some hot food. Maybe it was 3 hours from closing but their deep fried hot food were stale. For example, the egg rolls. It was mushy. The sui mai were also bland in texture. I also purchased a few of the cold sweet tofu with syrup. When I opened it today, it was not edible. I had to toss it out. The reason why I gave it a two star was because the fresh crab I purchased was $2 cheaper per pound than the other supermarkets near by and they carried traditional Chinese deserts that's not sold at other Chinese stores. read more

Today I went in at about 11am for a combo plate. I specifically asked the woman what meats were chicken, because I cant eat pork due to religious reasons. The woman proceeds to tell me that 2 of the items are "chicken" and very good, so I trusted her and asked for the ones she pointed out. To my surprise, they both ended up being PORK. And not only that, but the food was extremely slimy and disgusting. The "chicken" sauce is all thick and the same consistency as mucus. The meat itself was all PORK and seems like its been boiled rather than fried/seared + its mushy and had a bunch of fat on it. The sauce is also tasteless. It has the TINIEST scent of orange and thats it. No real taste. Same for the noodles. They had a funky smell and tasted like plain noodles with some oil. Not even sesame seed oil, just noodles and oil. You could bite on a piece of butter and get more flavor. The plate itself had more filler vegetables than anything which is crazy considering they've upped the price and reduced portions. Food here is just terrible. I used to come here all the time with my dad and the quality has gone down ENORMOUSLY since 2023. Store itself is stocked, sometimes overpriced, but clean. read more

Rude bitter old lady at food area!! Food is not the best chinese food so I sometimes asked why I even bother supporting her. I come here to support this lady BUT today I had my kids with me which I was ordering a lot of plates. My daughter touched the glass window which she told my daughter no touching in which I told my daughter not to touch the window. While grabbing more food, my son pointed and knocked on the glass indicating he wanted the fried fish. She rudely said stop touching the window to my son. I told her stop being rude because when I come here, she is always rude. She said my kids are rude and need to listen when she told them not to touch the glass window. I told her people touch the glass all the time rather it be me or my kids because there are finger prints/hand prints on the glass. I handed her back all the food as I will NOT support this food place anymore. COME ON IT IS A FREAKING GLASS! I asked her how is knocking on the glass hurting her? So I knocked on the glass and she said she will call security on me. I told her kids touching or pointing/knocking on the glass indicating which food dish they want does no harm. This supermarket does have a lot of good options to choose from, from hot food to sweet/savory snacks and even household supplies. But their hot food is always either close to spoiled or is already spoiled... I would not recommend getting it. The spoilt taste really lingers in your mouth and it's sickening. I would stick to already packaged goods. Please do better and STOP serving paying customers SPOILED FOOD. That is so dangerous and really negligent, and somewhat greedy since it can easily be tossed instead of customers bringing it home to eat. read more

I wish I could give Welco 0 Stars. My mom is a very loyal customer to them and they sold her stale, spoiled, smelly, fried rice. That's just disgusting. The parking lot is a little difficult to manuever at times, and the service can be hit or miss but the selection in groceries, food, and novelty items is pretty good. This place also have a section dedicated to Fiji island groceries, which I thought was interesting and unique. read more

I've been shopping at this grocery store since I was a teen. Welco is a small Asian grocery store that has the worse parking lot. The parking lot is super small and the way it was designed just screams chaos. It's almost like they tried to cram as many parking spots as possible onto a small piece of land. It's one of those parking lots where you sometimes have to wait for someone to pull out so you can park in their spot or you pull into the parking lot and you doing just that in the process block someone from getting out. It's like a jacked up roundabout parking lot. Visit Welco one time and you'll see what I mean. There is usually a security guard standing outside of the store. I mean, we are in South Sac so completely understandable. The store itself is just as small and the aisles are so narrow that only one shopping cart can go through at a time. It is very claustrophobic. Welco stands out from the other Asian grocery stores because to the left, you can pay your utility, phone bills, and etc. I don't know if any Asian store offering that service. In the back of the store, they have a hot wok where they have cooked Chinese food like chow mien, fried rice, sweet and sour pork, etc. all behind a case for ordering. Once again, I don't know of many Asian stores having a hot wok. The produce selection is okay. I'm normally not too impressed by it. They do have a section where they have to-go foods such as the papaya salad and kaleng fen. Overall, the prices for grocery here is average. This grocery store carries your basic Asian items and ingredients. The customer service here is a hit or miss. I think this very much depends on if the person helping you speaks any English. The parking lot situation is what prevents me from going to Welco too often. read more

The fresh meats and seafood were decent. Here is the reason for the low rating. Everyone wants the boba ice cream. That's the new hype right now. It's new and exciting. On average it's about $7 per box and a box has 4 bars. Just because it's the hype does NOT mean you should charge $15 a box. You are too greedy and money hungry. Despite the obscure etymology of it's name, "Welco" Supermarket is, as it advertises, a grocery store which specializes in both Asian and Mexican goods. I linger between the 3-4 star awarding on this because despite a lackluster experience at the hot food counter, I was intrigued by the blending of the two cultures under one roof. I'm typically a purist when it comes to Asian markets, and want them to be only Asian but I happen to love Mexican food as well, so this was an easy compromise to embrace. Decidedly more Asian than Mexican, you can indeed find both produce, frozen fare, canned goods, and more from both ethnic kitchens. True to common Asian grocery store features, you'll find cookware, a wide variety of rice and noodles, and the randomly placed, sleepy/distracted security guard. One feature which was comically out of place was the rather heavy rap music playing over the PA. "Dislike." My impression over pricing is that it seemed some items were more expensive than what I saw at other, comparable Asian markets. I had a "combo" plate at the hot food section and I give this a cumulative score of 2 stars; one for taste, and one for not sending me to the ER. it wasn't even mediocre. You'll find at Welco that the meat and seafood sections aren't nearly as robust as they are at other Asian markets with a similar floorplan. There would be space for it but for the fact that they had to make room for the Mexican fare as well. This isn't a problem per se but know what to expect when you enter. Store cleanliness was good. The cashiers spoke English. I did find the wall menu behind the hot food counter humorous in that out of a half dozen options, most of them were identical. Combo #1, 2 items with rice/chow mein for $6.99. Combo #2, #3, and #4 said the exact same thing! I question the wisdom in listing the exact same option 4-5 different times, paired only with a different food photographed to distinguish them from one another (an irrelevant distinction). Back to my initial comments about the hot food being lackluster, well, that's putting it mildly. I'd steer clear of it. It was unappealing enough to where I didn't want to finish it. It was a lot of food for the cost but then again the adage of "you get what you pay for" holds resoundingly true here. So, if finding queso cotija on one side of the aisle and a bag of frozen octopus on the other side sounds right up your alley then you could do worse than to try Welco. They sell seafood, meats, vegetables, fruits, beers, and many other things, etc. They even have a hot little deli inside, it's towards the back of the store, I haven't tried their hot foods from the deli, but they do look good every time I pass by, I'll definitely have to try next time for sure. Welco is just around the corner from our house so we occasionally go there to pick up some Asian food items including affordable rice. As we approach the store, we hold our breath and chant to the parking gods because often there is little to no parking space. I have seen large vans park randomly on the sidewalk when necessary in order to rush inside Welco for obviously very necessary goods. Once inside, I always notice the guards which is appropriate given its location. During my last visit, I took pictures of the store to post on Yelp, and was immediately struck by the curious and suspicious looks that the employees and guards shot me as I clicked the pictures. I was also struck by the frigid temperature inside the store (in winter months) which made us want to just pick our items and get the heck out of there. Sadly, all of these factors add to the uncomfortable atmosphere of Welco for us as newcomers and point us toward other Asian stores with more a more welcoming vibe. The Asian food items appear fairly priced. I was pleasantly surprised to see Mexican items there as well and the pastries looked fresh. They even carry random American boxed products like Jiffy (!) and it was there that I was taken back to my childhood years, reminiscing about eating Jiffy cupcakes and corn muffins. The store always appears to be very clean and organized with a variety of packaged and fresh foods. There is a decently sized seafood section for the size of the store and the tanks with fresh live fish appear clean. I have read reviews on this site about the cleanliness and good taste of the fish so one day we may try it after tearing ourselves away from Seafood City. The meat prices are also fair and often cheaper than other grocery stores. The produce appears to be fresh but not organic which we prefers these days, and which Welco does not carry or advertise as such. They also have a lot of vegetables wrapped in plastic which is very wasteful and not environmentally friendly. They have a hot bar with basic Chinese food items such as fried rice and orange chicken, the typical 5-6 "Chinese" food items found in America which we usually pass on but some do enjoy. You can also pay bills inside of the store which is very convenient. When we pay to leave, I notice that the cashiers are rarely friendly and rarely speak to us except to report the amount owed. Additionally, no one ever asks us if we need help finding something when inside the store. This plus the cold temperature leads us to enter and leave quickly and buy the basic items we need, neglecting to experiment with items we would like to try. Customer service and comfort is something Welco could definitely improve on as well as organic produce and less plastic moving into 2017. read more

I haven't been to Welco for so long since high school and that was like almost 10 years ago, I dropped by to do a favor for my aunt. My aunt need me to help her pay for her Comcast and Smog bill. I was very shocked to learn that you can now pay your bills in stores! When I walked in I almost didn't recognize this store, golly did it change and for the better. It's much more cleaner and organize than it was years ago. Back in my days, this store always had a weird scent that smell dirty, but now I couldn't smell that weird scent that they had back when I was a regular shopping at Welco. They also have a little take out stand in the back of the store with items such as chow mein, fried rice, sweet and sour pork and etc. Typical ABC (American Born Chinese) food. I kind of miss how back in the days, our family would rent video tapes and watch it at home. (Ya'll know what I'm talking about! Don't front) But now it's replaced with the pay bill service. This is your typical Asian supermarket that has just about anything a Asian person would need to make their dinner. Fresh produce, huge selection of meats (beef, chicken, pork, duck, lamb, etc) and fresh seafood! It's smaller than some other Asian stores but overall, I'm still happy with Welco because no matter what the size of the store is, they still have everything you need. Parking can be a little painful. But overall I'm still a fan! BTW, they're very Mexican friendly.
