I work at this Wendy's. I have been here around 3 months. With that being said, I will keep this review as constructive and unbiased as possible. To start I'll go after the elephant, I am naturally a hard worker and no matter where I'm working I will not change that. I worked on a construction union before I started here and I can honestly say that I have worked harder here than I did at construction. (Some days more than others but on average during the rushes, almost every person here works harder than I have at any other job I've ever been at) Now with THAT being said, this Wendy's starts people at 11 dollars an hour. Recently I've done some research, and checked alot of places all within a mile of this restaurant, and this is the lowest paying restaurant I've found. A Wendy's less than a mile away starts at 14.50 to 16.50 depending on experience. Now if this is your business strategy that's fine, but don't expect your good people to hang around, and be prepared for the type of people this attracts. Do not expect people to continue to have a 20 an hour ethic when you pay lower than every one around you. To go hand in hand with this topic, every week a paper is posted showing how much money was made that week. I've been keeping track of this for some time and on average the hard working people of Wendy's turn the store and it's owner around 60k a week. (I'm sure that's a net figure, before all costs), but their have been times we went well over that amount, and of course the workers are the ones that suffer and earn that money. Never once have I heard a thank you or seen any type of action to show appreciation of the extra income. The one time I have met the owner, without even exchanging names and meeting each other, I was told that I don't wash my hands well enough, and that I'm not allowed to have drinks, and she procedded to throw my drink away. Having been in management for most of my adult life, I do understand having a period of time only paying a certain amount, because it is an investment on the businesses end, but being a privately owned franchise, any amount of time over a few months of paying someone just enough to scrap by, seems to be fueled by nothing but greed. I personally individually like each and every person that I work with but when it comes to the atmosphere and hopes of opportunities their are a lot of worrisome red flags that not many would see, and they are many things that could be said that are justifiable reasons for them, but I believe if something looks like bs, and it smells like bs, it is probably bs. Including the owner, 6 out of 7 of the managers are female, and the one male seems to be banished to day shift, by choice or force I don't know, and I by no means am saying the managers in place don't deserve their place, but 6 out of 7 is outstanding when considered. The schedule to me seems cherry picked and is in favor to the more liked female workers, giving them weekends off or better hours if they do work weekends. The jobs that no one wants to do are always tasked to the men, (usually the hardest working ones) and of course they aren't paid any different. This store is owned by a boomer and it shows and bleeds throughout. I understand and consider the argument that fast food is a job for high schoolers, not a career, but as the father of a 13 year old daughter I can say that I wouldn't want her working here and believing that she's only worth what they pay, (in today's world). I would hope that no one would want their teenagers time and labor being taken advantage of either. I got this job out of a desperate situation but I have always been a very serious and ambitious person when it comes to where I invest my sweat, and I have found myself disappointed in a few of the decisions I've made here because I know it's not who or how I am usually as an employee. As a company that makes multi millions yearly, I don't think it should be out of the question to seek opportunity and a career with them, they SHOULD be able to afford it. One perk employees do get is a free meal, on their unpaid 30 minute lunch break, and this has been stripped down to choosing from the value side of the menu. Anything that costs more than a 5 dollar biggie bag has to be paid for. I am unaware of how managements bonuses are determined, but I have a hunch that expense plays a part, because on the same paper that posts how many thousands we made the store that week, is also a break down of what costs went up and what we need to do to lower costs. All of these things spread like disease through the staff. It's hard to manage employees who aren't motivated and have no reason to be. I honestly feel bad for the middle management because of the people they have to do deal with that come attracted to somewhere that has to hire anyone that is desperate enough to sign up for the 1970s pay rate. We made a late night dinner stop around 9:30pm. The drive thru line had a fairly long wait but the food was piping hot. They even had a sign on the window encouraging you to try the fries right then and there and if they aren't hot and fresh, hey'll get you new ones. I enjoyed our food. Wendy's opened in my hometown back in the late 1970s and it instantly supplanted McDonald's as the Best Restaurant on the Planet in my woefully addled and ignorant pre-teen mind, at least for the next six months. Maybe the best thing about it in retrospect was scrutinizing the old-timey newspaper ads printed on the tables. ("Six Little Tailors," reprazent.) And Frostys, of course. Nowadays, I often forget that Wendy's exists. (If I took more than both hands to count the number of times I've eaten at a Wendy's in the last two decades, I'd be shocked.) But the stretch of interstate running 150 or 200 miles south from Charleston, WV, is a virtual culinary wasteland, and I was getting hungry. I chose Wendy's only because it seemed to be the fast-food emporium closest to the interstate exit. Like just about every other first-world corporation that hopes to sell its product to people under sixty in the 21st century, Wendy's now has a TV ad campaign that is snarky and ironic, now featuring a live-action, young-adult, contemporary, urbane, nerd-hipster Wendy. Of course, she's both attractive and approachable: she busts on her dweeby co-workers, but she's cool. And, of course, she eats every meal at Wendy's, even though she looks like she weighs about 118 pounds. But the actual bricks-and-mortar Wendy's is still the same old dorky, dreary, depressing 20th century Wendy's. This location could be straight out of 1991, except for the prices; you almost expect dear old avuncular Dave Thomas to come out of the back and greet you. No nerd-hipster, urbane Wendy here, and none of her nerd-hipster buds. No, it's just me and a bunch of fellow schlubs: weary interstate travelers and local workers. And to top it off, Wendy's is still mired in the same tired, unimaginative burgers-and-chicken-and-fries menu as it ever has been, and it still has the same dated decor and color scheme. (Wendy's chili is a notch better than the rest of the food.) To make matters worse, this location had some mawkish modern country dribble on the sound system. Grilled chicken sandwich was as bland as skim milk, and the mayo kept the buns sliding off the contents of the sandwich. The fries at Wendy's are boring. But at least the chicken was cooked properly. And the service was quick, and the restaurant appeared to be clean. Which is only way this gets to two stars. Call it 1.75. Get a Frosty, and get out. read more

We stopped here for lunch yesterday and selected 2 avocado BLT sandwiches, one of which was the meal deal with French fries and a drink. They were very busy so I had ample time to view the mask wearing habits of the staff. But I digress--see the end of this review to learn what I saw there. Back to the food. We expected fresh (cool and firmly slippery) avocado slices but pureed guacamole was used. It was nice they offered 3 different chicken preparations. But between the heavy application of the ranch/mayo type sauce and the guacamole and the slippery tomato on top of the provolone (?) cheese, it was a messy sandwich to eat. The bacon (not cooked to crisp) and the lettuce was minimal which made it a soft, rather boring sandwich to eat (crunch is good!). The only texture change in the sandwich was the firmness of the chicken. The bun was soft and squishy which made it difficult to contain the soft slippery ingredients in place when every bite down on the chicken propelled the slippery soft ingredients on either side of it, out the sides. Masks--what I saw--the good news: they were wearing them. While waiting in line, I noticed that the person busily scooping French fries had a problem restraining the germs coming out of their nose and thereby contaminating the food they were serving (At least they were not coughing.) The bad news: nearly all the staff joined this person's mask-wearing habit and did not wear theirs properly (over their noses and mouths). Our cashier started out wearing their mask correctly, but pushed it down so customers could hear their speech. (Wouldn't be great to have a technological solution to make it possible to be heard while wearing a protective mask?(Preferably an authentic N-95 mask that protects the wearer and the people near the wearer and NOT the N-95 masks with the little round valve that makes it easier for the wearer to breathe and protects the wearer but not those nearby [as the nasty germs living in the wearer's lungs travel though the valve with every exhaled breath of the wearer]). However, lacking a N-95 mask, wear a well-fitting pleated paper surgical mask or a well-fitting cloth mask which can protect those around you from your germs. Please wear a mask even if you feel OK now (many don't feel sick when they are contagious). As others have said, this Wendy's pretty much stinks. Stopped here once driving home from college and had a really awful burger and cold fries. It's one of the few places to stop in the middle of nowhere West Virginia along I-77 though and I was craving Wendy's over any other fast food place driving back to college on a separate trip, so I decided a second chance was in order. Big mistake- the food was still bad, the cashier attempted numerous upsells, and when I asked for "a lot of ketchup" for my fries, I received two measly packets. A few months ago I stopped for lunch. The woman ahead of me had to have her potato reheated while waiting for rest of meal. I had to tell someone to bring my potato up, as it had been sitting over five minutes. Someone else cane back in to exchange incorrect sandwich. This time I waited over five minutes while cashier took part of a multi-person carryout order and no one would open a second register. I left and went to Subway across the street. Let's face it, when you're at Wendy's you aren't after fine dining and have to adjust your expectations accordingly. However, even with greatly lowered standards, this Wendy's is a giant fail. We had the misfortune of selecting this Wendy's because we were on the toll road and needed a quick stop for lunch. We almost immediately regretted our choice. It was obvious that the drive through was the priority because food seemed to be getting out to those orders more quickly than those of us waiting inside. Normally the one benefit of being in a busy restaurant is that your food will be hot when it is delivered. But somehow this Wendy's has mastered the art of delivering what appears to be fully-cooked food slowly at a warm-ish temperature. I can't envision the circumstances that would next dictate a stop in Beckley, WV, but the next time I find myself there I hope I come across this review and pick another place to eat. read more
