We hired West Coast to insulate our attic for us. The old blown-in insulation had compressed and no longer did the job. The estimator, Omar, came out and was knowledgeable and friendly. They gave us a fair bid to vacuum out the old insulation and install fiberglass batts to R-38. The installers were experienced, knowledgeable, professional and courteous. The final product was done well and on time. There were some misunderstandings on the project, but the owner resolved all the problems to my satisfaction. I would hire them again. read more

At the urging of a friend, I had West Coast Insulation come out to give me a bid for insulating the roof. The estimator came out and explained the process and the possible challenges of the roof, i.e., being very low, they may have to cut a hole in one of the closets to blow in the insulation. After thinking about it more, I decided to go ahead. A date was set for the installation and two workers arrived on time. What happens is a big hose is threaded into your attic/roof crawl space and the insulation is blown into the space. A short man has the unfortunate job of crawling around in your attic/crawl space to direct the hose. 2 hours later, they were done. It's too early to tell how much cooler or warmer the house is, but my friend has had his roof insulated and assures me I'll see a lower PG&E bill. They accept credit cards, but you will have a 2% surcharge which I'm guessing is to cover the merchant charge. read more

As a General Contractor I have used West Coast for around 20 years now. Always happy with the service. Installers know their jobs, not just a laborer off the street at Home Depot. Last renovation my company did we had the chance to watch them install the attic batts before sheet rock. Impressive to say the least. I moved to Newark and am currently using them to upgrade my house. They did the walls first, drilling into the walls up and low and shooting the insulation in. I had my painters paint the outside of the house after that and you could not locate the holes they patched. Just had a new furnace installed in the attic and will now have them come and add to the attic space, plus new batts in the crawl space. I have also used them for a Fireplace insert on a previous job. Will be using them for all my insulation needs in the future. read more

West Coast Insulation came recommended from a contractor friend. The estimator showed up on time and was professional, knowledgeable, and gave me a fair estimate. He said to insulate my house would take a day and half. I scheduled the appointment and took two days off work. On day 1, no one showed. I called at 12:00 and the office had no idea where their team was. I had to call back a few times, and after 2:00 the office told me they wouldn't be coming that day. They said they could get it done the next day if they showed up early and left late. I don't know if they could have finished in one day, but the couple of extra hours the office was adding wouldn't equal the full half day the estimator said I needed, and at that point I didn't trust them. What if they only half finished? It didn't matter anyway - I wasn't free during the morning or the late afternoon they were trying to add. So I took those two days off work for nothing. The company tried to reschedule, and I said that I'd do it if they offered me a discount to offset the money I lost not working for two more days, which seemed reasonable. They told me to make my case to the owner. The owner (unsurprisingly) never responded. As a last attempt I emailed the estimator directly, because he seemed like a really legit guy and I get that mistakes happen. I made the same case to him and asked for a discount. He agreed that the situation was unacceptable and said he would intercede with the owner and get back to me. When I checked a week later, having heard nothing, he responded very rudely and said I should take responsibility for canceling on the second day. Thanks for the lecture, Dad? It's not my fault that I had a schedule to keep (unlike West Coast Insulation, who apparently doesn't care about that sort of thing), and it's not my fault they were trying to cram a day and a half of work into one day because they couldn't be bothered to show up. Emailing me with accusations that this was my fault (some parts were even in ALL CAPS, for extra emphasis!!!) is just rude. There's no shortage of insulation companies. Find one that treats you like you're paying them to do a job, and that will act responsibly with your time. read more

Set an appointment with Rick, the estimator, who told me he could be in my house between 11-11.30am. When he didnt show up by 11.40, I got to my phone to call him to find out if he was lost. I got a missed call and a voice message from him. The message was sent at 10.30 to ask if he could come earlier. I called him and he told me that he was on his way to his next destination. I was confused. I reminded him that we had an appointment between 11- 11.30. His reply was 'not anymore'. I thought it was a strange answer to a customer. I asked him what he meant. He then asked me 'why are we arguing?' Excuse me?????? I called West Coast to complain. The girl who picked up the phone was apologetic and told me that the owner would call me back. The owner called back in the afternoon, and apologized and we scheduled an appointment with another estimator. Joe showed up. He is friendly, polite and knowledgable. He checked the ceiling and the wall to make sure that they are suitable for the blown-in insulation I am interested in. read more

Tried calling 3 times on 3 different days to make an appointment to have my fireplace repaired. Not one return call. Tried calling a fourth time and of course nobody who could help was available. Have used them for insulation installation and have had no problems, would not recommend calling for fireplace issues. read more

Luis came out to give me an estimate, he was prompt in getting back to me to schedule the appointment and worked around my tough schedule which was wonderful. He was polite on time and professional. I gave him the rundown of what I wanted (blown in wall insulation in through the wood siding and stucco) and he walked me through the entire process so I was fully informed. He seemed to rush it a little but that was fine as I needed to get back to work. I told him about my previous insulation experience (with another contractor) and how unhappy I was to find little bits of insulation in my driveway, in my plants, all around the house, in my lawn etc. (small pieces but they were everywhere). Luis knew of the other contractor and assured me everything would be cleaned up spotless! I told him this was THE MOST IMPORTANT ASPECT OF THE JOB over and over again. Luis reassured me it would be completely clean. They started 2 weeks later, called to confirm the appointment and the time (9 am) the day before. They showed up closer to 11, the crew was courteous and seemed to work hard. When I got home from work, surprise surprise, insulation all over place. Again they were small pieces but they were everywhere. I had a party with 12 families and children coming to my house 4 days later. I called Luis the following day and told him what I found. He was as surprised as I was. He apologized again and again and I told him I know problems happen but it's how you deal with them. He told me his office would call me to get someone out the following day. I had to call two more times before someone finally told me they would come by that afternoon to clean up. I gave them specific instructions about what needed cleaning up as well as wiping down the furniture at the back of the house where all their stucco dust (from drilling through the stucco) had covered everything and they assured me it would be handled. I called twice more to confirm their crew would call first before getting there as I have a dog and a sleeping baby and wanted notice before they came. Both calls I was told he will definitely call before. Of course they show up without a call and wake the baby. They asked my wife to show them what we want cleaned and when she points it out, the guy looks at my wife like she's crazy (I was still at work so this is coming from her). She told them multiple times to call me and they said they would. They showed up with nothing more than a bag to put the insulation in. We had to provide the hose, cleaner and rags for them to clean the back. I am thoroughly not impressed with the cleanup or communication after I had signed the contract. It seems like they do a good job with the installation but their cleanup and customer service is not good. It would have taken then 5 minutes to lay down a drop cloth or plastic to catch the insulation instead of letting it go all over my yard. I know I don't have a multi million dollar home but it's my home and I was crystal clear that I didn't want a mess left behind. Huge mess, doesn't seem like they coordinate well my concerns with the installation crew. read more

I am writing this review for Rick Montero, an estimator of the company. It's been already a couple years that I contacted the company but I got really busy with a baby and could not take the time to write a review. Since I really wanted to take the time to write this review, here it is. Rick was great. I first contacted him for an estimate to insulate the walls of our house but I only called him back almost a year later for the job. I was pleased to hear that he remembered me and that I did not have to go through everything all over again with him. An other thing that I really appreciated about him is that everytime I called him he always either answered the phone directly or called me back within seconds. It really made me feel good about this company. Throughout the process, Rick was very generous by giving me a lot of advice for keeping my house warm in winter and cool in summer. He spent the time necessary to figure out what would be the best for me, even if it was not directly related to the actual job that he was hired for. The work got done well and Rick was always around to make sure that the guys would do their best at filling those walls completely. Rick really took at heart the quality of the results. Pete handy ( owner) was great, very knowledgable and helped us choose and purchase our 2 valor fireplaces. The general contractor we used ( then later parted ways with) did a terrible job on the gas lines ( despite our best efforts to explain the gas line placement) wasting the west coast installers time. We eventually got the gas lines sorted (sort of!) and the fires we installed. Mike and his partner we professional, hard working and respectful of our home and the job they were doing. Kevin returned my phone calls quickly and the placement of my Order was handled quickly and completely. The unit even arrived at their location a few days ahead of its anticipated due in date. The installers arrived with all the necessary parts and did a clean install. My house and hardwood floor were left clean and undamaged. These guys also do Fireplaces. Their full name is 'West Coast Insulation and Fireplace.' Kevin is the fireplace guy and he is great! I looked at 42" gas fireplaces, new, not inserts. I went to the premier fireplace store in SF where I live and another store in Oakland for quotes. Kevin beat both those prices by almost half! What would have cost almost 7k installed Kevin could do for less than 4k. I looked at Montigo, Regency and Valor. Kevin can get and install them all for less than anyone else! Also, his permit prices are 1/2 to 1/3 what the others were going to charge for simply getting a permit from the city. read more

Got a fireplace installed by West Coast Insulation in our living room, as part of a much larger renovation project. Worked mainly with Kevin. Can't be more satisfied: always showed up on time, returned my calls, provided all information requested, coordinated with my contractor (who was late in our full house renovation project), and sent someone competent to finish the fireplace install quickly when more than a month later, and long after we had paid in full, the living room was finally ready. I just used West Coast Insulation to insulate the outer walls of my condo. I was referred to them from a general contractor friend who had used them repeatedly in the past. (I had used a different company to blow insulation into my ceiling and was not happy with their work.) West Coast Insulation gave a very competitive bid to blow insulation into the walls. They arrived as scheduled and completed the work in one day. The two man crew was knowledgeable, fast, and extremely professional. They had one problem during the day in that the blower wasn't working well. (They had a mechanic drive in to fix the issue and everything was back on its way.) My neighbor was sufficiently impressed with the work that he is now having the same done to his unit. I was also impressed with the fact that they did not charge extra to use Cocoon Cellulose over the standard fiberglass. Another company I spoke with was going to charge a 10% surcharge for the to use the greener product. One note -- West Coast Insulation claims to have the most powerful insulation blower in the Bay Area. This is important as the more power the better the insulation is packed into the walls. I can attest to the fact that their machine is extremely strong an the insulation was tightly packed. read more

Please save yourself some headaches and DO NOT buy from this company. Once they install something you CANNOT get service. If you call the store they send you to Kevin's voice mail. Well Kevin doesn't ever answer his voice mail or call you back. Customer service is non existent. They don't get it. If you want people to buy from you treat them with respect..return their calls, provide service in a timely manner and answer your phone!! This is not the only game in town, there are other businesses that actually want your business and work for it. read more

We recently purchased our gas fireplace insert from West Coast Insulation and I would highly recommend them. The owner, Pete Handy, was extremely professional, courteous and accommodating to our schedules. Prior to ordering any materials a thorough inspection and measurement was done of the fireplace, the gas line and the chimney to be sure the insert would fit properly. His lead time to install the fireplace was within two weeks. Their estimate was also much more reasonable than that of their competitor's. The installers were prompt and did an excellent job on the insert and on the chimney cap. We live in a townhome and it was important for us that it blends in with the other chimneys. The cap is painted and looks better than all the others! Following our install, we had an unrelated gas leak which required the insert to be pulled out of the fireplace box over a weekend. We called Pete and he came right out to help with the removal and the replacement of the insert. He did this with a smile and at no charge. Pete was also able to recommend Jeff Pacini of Pacini Tileworks to provide us with a beautiful marble surround for our insert. We have had our Valor G3 gas insert for approximately one month and it has exceeded our expectations - functionally and cosmetically. We absolutely love it!!! We want to thank Pete personally. Now that we've moved in we can appreciate how well insulated our home is, staying cool in the summer, and easy to heat up now that it is getting cooler out. Everything about my recent experience with West Coast Insulation was unsatisfactory. They were hired to remove the old insulation from my attic. The work they did took more than 10 days to complete because they did not schedule consecutive work days. Each time someone did show up to my house, it was a different person who had absolutely no idea what work needed to be done. From the estimator to each additional person who arrived, workers left a terrible mess of fiber glass dust in my house and handprints on my walls. They didn't clean up after themselves, and if my contractor wasn't present to supervise their work they did not cover their work space with protective plastic. The work they were contracted to perform is not complete, though they have billed me and assert that their work is done. The owner Pete Handy has failed to return multiple phone calls from me. On the one occasion I did happen to have him on the phone, he told me he was going home for the day and would call me back in the morning. That never happened. The firm did finally tell my contractor it would cost an additional $2,000 to clean the attic, which I had hired them to do in the first place. That is outrageous on its own, but when SDI insulation came for an estimate, they told me that it would cost $1,000. I caution anyone who is considering using West Coast Insulation. They do not stand by their work, and they do not keep their contractual obligations. read more

West Coast Insulation did our fireplace insert in November 2011. I would wholeheartedly recommend them. Pete Handy the owner was professional, helped us choose a product for our fireplace that looks fantastic, and went above and beyond to ensure the insert worked in our 100 year old fireplace (square peg round hole situation). We were very impressed with Pete's customer service. End to end, he and his team worked quickly. There was a short lead time on ordering the product and having it installed. We had some out of the ordinary issues to deal with because of our non-standard, old, odd shaped fireplace and Pete helped us navigate those issues. Shane the installer made some excellent recommendations and did very high quality work. Pete also recommended Mike Collyer from Collyer Masonry to do some masonry (removed old bricks and built a platform for the fireplace insert). Mike worked magic to ensure the fireplace insert would fit to the fraction of an inch. The only issue we had was with the third party plumber who initially put the gas line in the wrong location -- make sure you have a plumber who has fireplace insert gas line experience. Overall, Pete Handy and his fireplace insert team were excellent. I would certainly use them again. read more
