On a positive note, our server, Christian was awesome. He was friendly and very attentive. We were a party of 13, so he had his work cut out for him. The food was very good except for an Eggs Benedict dish. Apparently, the hollandaise sauce was sub par. Now for the really disappointing part. We chose this place for Mother's Day because their brunch menu advertised bottomless mimosas. However, when we ordered it, even though it was on the menu, they said that they weren't offering bottomless mimosas that day!! WTH? They told us we'd have to purchase a bottle of champagne ($33) and make our own mimosas! So, if you're going there to have bottomless mimosas, better call ahead to make sure they're serving it that day -- especially if it's a special occasion. Great views, good service, and yummy food and drinks. I came here on a Saturday night with some girlfriends, with a reservation. The clientele felt like it was a regular spot for those 50+. We had a few cocktails, all of which were great. We got an assortment of food and everything was really good. Our service was a bit all over the place. This is the second time I have been served wine that has been turned here. The first time there were apologies and acknowledgment. Tonight there was none. If you are not confident enough to send back bad wine back you may just have to pay for a glass of bad (turned) wine (wine that has been left open too long and gone bad or on the rare occasion has been oxidized before opening. Also we had to ask for more water multiple times. It seems like it should be basic hospitality at a restaurant that markets itself to be of this caliber. read more

Decided to visit and friend in SD and catch up over brunch. I made a reservation for Saturday at 11:15a and to my surprise, it wasn't super crowded when we arrived. We were sat on the patio which is covered and has sunshades, so it wasn't too hot. I ordered pancakes with eggs and bacon, along with a coffee. Eggs were cooked to perfection and the bacon was delicious! The portion sizes were pretty big, I wasn't able to finish everything (that's not a complaint though!). My friend got blueberry pancakes and they really enjoyed them. The prices are moderate and there's plenty of parking. Next time I find myself in that area, I'd definitely go again. read more

What a gem!!!!! I've driven by this restaurant so many times not realizing they have exactly what I'm looking for in a cozy dining experience. Located across the street from the Torrey Pines lagoon the view of the Torrey Pines reserve is fantastic in the evening. I was greeted by a genuinely friendly gentleman who also turned out to be a very well informed server. His recommendations for the tostada starters and the halibut special was spot on. There were 4 of us and we each shared the very delicious tostadas and the artichokes which I could eat an entire plate myself. They really were cooked to perfection. Someone ordered the meatloaf, someone else ordered the crab ravioli, the halibut special was ordered and I got the cioppino. There was silence around the table as everything was just delicious, we all enjoyed the rich flavors of our meal, everything was prepared perfectly. I have mixed feelings about this restaurant. The ambiance was nice in the evening with the outdoor lights lit up in the covered patio. During the day, however, the blue awning wasn't exactly inviting. The bright blue cover reminds me of one of those tarps I got from Home Depot, so it doesn't look remotely impressive for a kickoff brunch event. My friend and I had originally booked this restaurant for our event based on a recommendation since we've never been here before, but ended up canceling our reservation because it did not meet our expectations in terms of ambiance. We wanted something to "wow" the group and this definitely did not do it, at least not for a daytime event. We met with the restaurant manager and he wasn't very accommodating to our needs and the service was rather slow too. About the food...I had the chilled blue crab salad. I loved how they had a nice big scoop of the fresh crab. I enjoyed my salad and thought it was great. My friend ordered the same, but didn't care for it due to the slightly bland salad dressing and the crab shells. My comment on the shell is this: At least you know they're serving real crab! I didn't mind picking out the few shells from my dish and thought it was great overall! The friends we came with ordered the bread with pesto, roasted garlic, olives, and goat cheese to share. I didn't have any, and found the smell to be a bit overpowering. They also ordered the cioppino to share. It looked and smelled great. I was genuinely happy with my chilled crab salad and didn't have a taste of the cioppino. I would come here again in the evening when I'm in the mood for chilled blue crab salad. Maybe even some pasta too! In summary, I would say come here in the evening, but not when you're starving because service is slow. Definitely order the chilled blue crab salad! OMG ...i don't know why it had to be so cold in here! there were heat lamps on the patio area...i'm thinking it might have been a little better out there. most people had their coats on (both inside and outside)....they really need to pay attention to those signals and correct the temperature. It really made it difficult to enjoy my meal. That being said. Service is good enough (had trouble getting servers attention at times) food was good (not fabulous) I would come again if a friend wanted to come, but it's not something I would pick as my first choice. That being said...i'm curious to give it another try in the summer when i can focus on the food instead of maintaining my body temperature. read more

The reviews were correct in incredible food and service. We were promptly seated on the outside deck area and were greeted by our server Ricky for the evening. His recommendations were spot on and his courteous and upbeat personality added to our experience while dining. The ahi tuna appetizer was great and we had ordered the short ribs and chef special of red snapper for the night. Both were brought out quickly and absolutely incredible. Hands down best service and food we've had in quite a long time and couldn't have been happier to have found this place. What a cute location! Located very close to Torrey pines beach and the Del Mar area, West End is very noticeable and easy to find w plenty of parking. The food was slightly pricier, as expected for the area. The flatbread and clam chowder apps were both good, especially the flatbread l. The duck was the highlight of the show for me! I was not feeling the Christmas spirit so my hubby took us out to look at Christmas lights and as we passed this restaurant we made a mental note that we might pop in for a drink and some dessert. After perusing the lights in Del Mar we decided to come in for a night cap. The menu looked so good we decided to have 2nd dinner. For starters we had pan fried duck wontons and the artichokes. Somehow the artichokes were forgotten, so we didn't get them til we were finishing our main course. We weren't charged for them which was kind, but more importantly they were amazing. For our main dishes my hubby had the short neck clam linguine with a non cream sauce. Great flavor in the sauce. I'm not a huge clam fan, but the noodles and sauce were definitely delicious. My daughter had the Scottish salmon with capers, artichokes, mashed potatoes and green beans. The salmon was prepared well but the artichokes were a little overpowering. I had the crab ravioli in garlic cream sauce and it was was very good. For drinks I tried the Pomberry martini, which had blueberries and pomegranate and was delightful. For dessert I ordered the chocolate martini but they didn't have the necessary ingredients so I tried the tiramisu martini. It is a must try! Dessert...ok, you know how food tastes better when you're hungry? After clearing our plates, we ordered some dessert just to taste them. Boy was that a mistake. My stomach still hurts from eating the incredibly creamy creme brule with fragrant fruit, and several tasty spoons of warm figgy pudding and the spoonfull of the profiterole. I have to say, the desserts were 5 star worthy. Note, bring a jacket! We sat inside bit it was still pretty chilly, and a little bit loud. That or 8m going deaf in my old age. read more

West End Bar and Kitchen is located on the Southern end of Del Mar and sits along side the road connecting Highway 5 to Torrey Pines Beach. Most that have driven this path to the coast would recognize the rustic wood building and would be able to recall that there are many that frequent West End Bar. It has a very local and friendly feel and the folks that work there fit the role very well. They were very attentive and checked back regularly to ensure things were well and our glasses were topped. As usual, the experience started with a sampling of appetizers. This evening, the group settled on the artichokes and the flat bread with chicken and pesto. Both of these items are home runs. Great creative accents and flavors that were exceptional. It was clear, we could have settled on just appetizers, but not today. We moved onto the entrees and I have provided pictures of what the group ordered. Very good portions and the chef really took different approaches to serving the proteins. Of all the items, having sampled all and are the Cioppino, the Angus Short Rib was the winner. Great flavors and the protein was cooked perfectly. The Crusted Pork Loin and Salmon were fine, but the former could have benefitted from seasoning and the Salmon could have been enhanced with a more robust caper lemon sauce. The Cioppino was very hearty (as you can see), but really had no depth in the sauce. Perhaps some pepper, more seafood broth, and more cooking would have made a bigger difference. For those inclined, I encourage you to request some hot sauce. Overall, I would say West End Bar is a recommended stop. Great appetizers, great service and an entree for just about anyone's preference. Locals that don't already dine here should do so. For those passing through town, I encourage you to dine here as well. Very solid spot and off the beaten path from downtown Del Mar which can be difficult to get a table. Enjoy! read more
