We got a gift certificate from our daughters for our anniversary and this is one of the places that was included. We are not exactly the target demographic for this restaurant - we are older and not beer drinkers. I ordered the trout and he got the fish and chips. The trout was excellent, but trout with barbecue sauce is a strange combination. The root vegetables were mainly beets and potatoes - good, but still, strange with barbecue sauce. The mash was good. His fish had a lot of batter, but I guess people like it that way - he took all the batter off. The coleslaw was good. The service was OK. It took the waiter quite a while to notice that we were finished, though. This is probably a lot better if you are young and a beer-drinker. The beer menu looked really good. read more

Growing up In Boulder I sadly never made it to this place till late college :( man did I miss out. I recently ate and drank at this place and came out a full and happy human being. The actuall building is set up really cool with a sweet rooftop, with games to play. They have a full bar with many mico brews on tap and bottle, while also having an awesome selection of whiskeys. I have only been here a few times and what i have gotten to eat were the WET fries yumm, west end cheese burger yummmmm, and their famous wings the BEST. Lets just say the wings have made me want wings every weekend since, no place matches their.s. All the food was excellent quality and at a reasonable price considering downtown Boulder. This place is legit, I went for a couple beers and ended up staying for lunch. I had the Pork Schnitzel Sandwich, which was outrageously good, and it's served with amazing homemade pickles. This is a tough one. The wings here are great. I think the best in Boulder. They have a good crispyness to them yet they are not overly saucy. A really good mix. My problem is the last time I went here the services was horrible. At one point I opened one of the drink menus to find gum inside! I pointed this out to the waitress and she told me it happens, and then didn't apologize. So if you don't mind poor service but want some great wings, The West End is for you. read more

Finally got back to the West End for happy hour and it was every bit as good as I remember. For any lover of beer, bourbon, or BBQ, the West End is a must. I started with some ribs from the happy hour menu and, at the suggestion of our server, added the burnt ends, Both were amazing! The beer selection is huge and rotates regularly enough to keep me coming back. I'm not much of a whiskey drinker but, for those who are, you will not find a better selection of both high-end and quite affordable bourbons. I also love the numerous TVs upstairs, almost assuring that if you've got a game to watch they can find it for you. PROS: Pretty much everything stated above. The staff is also amazing, with very knowledgeable bartenders and servers ready to walk you through what's on tap that day. We were seated right away in the upstairs bar section (too cold to take advantage of the outdoor deck) by a very friendly host. I'm guessing, though, that like everywhere in Boulder, there would likely be a wait during the weekend dinner rush. CONS: -No happy hour on the weekends is a bit of a shame. -We were also there on a cold day and the heaters upstairs seem to have two settings...OFF and Surface Of The Sun. It was very difficult to reach a happy medium. -One other issue with the upstairs is the complete lack of WiFi. I used to come to the West End every Sunday with a group of friends to watch football, but we had to move over to the Lazy Dog so we could keep up with our Fantasy Football stats without burning through our data plans. I checked again on my recent visit to see if it was any better, hoping to return for the NHL playoffs, but it was somehow even worse. They have now added a login page that requires your email. It took me several attempts to get past this page, only to find out that there is still no working WiFi. Kind of a bummer as I don't like the Lazy Dog. I also kind of miss having the occasional working lunch here with a group of co-workers but, same issue. SUMMARY: Overall, this is one of my favorite places to go in Boulder. Whether it's for a quick happy hour or a relaxing dinner with friends or family, you really can't go wrong with the West End Tavern. The beer selection rotates frequently enough that I'll always find something new and interesting, and the food is always great. I'm already looking forward to summer and soaking up some sun on that outdoor deck with a burger and an ice-cold beer. read more

If you are going for lunch, sit on the upstairs patio! It's wonderful! Service has been good the few times we've been here. I think the menu seems a little lacking, but I always find something to order and am happy at the end. This is where my 4 stars comes from....if the menu was slightly bigger, I'd give it 5. I liked the atmosphere but really wasn't too impressed with the food. We ordered the "Beer Cheese Dip" for an appetizer and it wasn't worth the $ 12. It came with about five thin slices of apple, three cherry tomatoes three baby carrots three slices of sausage (about 1 link) and wedges of sour dough bread. Not worth the money. My burger, "Hop Smoked Burger' tasted dry and mealy. I did like the tomato soup was very good and my nephew really enjoyed the "Rolling Smoked Gumbo". I tried it and it was very good. West End has some of the best food. I definitely get the chicken wings and the french onion soup. Be prepared to wait, the staff there is not the quickest. I have worked in the restaurant business for many years and I was upset by how slow the workers are. They do not make you feel like you are their priority. Other then the service the food is amazing! My boyfriend and I come here often for Happy Hour and the food is always delicious. The wings are nice and crispy and have tons of flavor. The chicken biscuit and fries are tasty as well. No question about it, this is my favorite restaurant in Boulder and this is why: 1) First and foremost, the staff. If you have the chance, talk to the bartenders- the things they know about spirits (especially bourbon) and beer will amaze you. They really take the time to talk to you about what you're drinking and they let you sample different things. Table-side service is also superb; ask your server any question about anything on the food or drink menu, and I bet they'll know it. The entire staff is very personable, knowledgable, and professional every single time. 2) The food is delicious. I especially love their wings, short ribs, and brisket burger. I'll admit, I've had southern BBQ and nothing in Boulder can quite match up to it, but West End Tavern is about as good as it's going to get. Meat falls off the bone, the burgers are juicy, and there's enough variety on the menu for everyone at the table to enjoy. They also have a unique food special every time I come in that someone at the table always has to get- and someone at every table should get, from what I've tasted. 3) The beer selection! West End Tavern cherishes beer like no other restaurant in Boulder. It has a great variety and it works closely with local breweries, even hosting special brewery events. It's decently priced, too- for the quality that you're paying for. Don't know what you want? Your server/bartender will guide you through different options and help you figure out exactly what you're looking for! 4) The rooftop! If it's nice outside, definitely go to the patio- if you have to wait for a table, trust me it's worth it. You will have a perfect view of the Flatirons and the patio has heaters/sunshades to help you be as comfortable as possible no matter the weather. At night, there is a fire pit that is so much fun to get a drink at the bar and then go out there to hang out at night. There is also an indoor rooftop with plenty of TVs to watch your favorite game, and it has an outdoor feel to it. 5) The drinks menu. If you like bourbon, this is an absolute must in Boulder. They have the most extensive bourbon list of any restaurant I've ever seen- and what's more, they barrel-age certain bourbons to give them that extra special quality. Their cocktail menu is unique- I'm especially impressed by how much they home-make, from simple syrups to infused spirits to infused agaves. I love and respect many restaurants in Boulder, but ultimately this place is at the top of my list. This place was absolutely amazing. I always have a hard time finding good places to eat when traveling out of town. Being from Portland kind of makes you food spoiled. I was hear with a few folks and everything we ordered was great. The burger was local beef and delicious, their Reuben was nicely grilled, the fries were crisp and the coleslaw was some of the best. My parents ordered a large amount of food last night for their anniversary. The ribs were by far the worst ribs we have ever had. They were so overcooked they were black and we could not eat them. Love this place! Why have I not been here before? So we started off with a dozen chicken wings. They were so good. Some of the best wings in Denver. The sauce is spicy and smokey. The wings are HUGE! I think I could take on the 50 wing challenge for sure. I got the half rack of pork ribs. I substituted extra slaw for the fries. That was a great choice because the fennel slaw is bright, light, and delicious. The ribs had a great flavor and fell off the bone. The BBQ sauce on the side was so good. It was not too thick and not sweet at all. Perfect! The pork belly beans were really tasty. Not sweet like baked beans so I really enjoyed them. My boyfriend had two beers. The Stone IPA and the Telluride Trippel and Stillwater. He liked them both. He ate the cheese burger bacon and jalapeño. The jalapeños came on the side. He loaded his burger up! Halfway through his burger he ate "the hottest jalapeño" he has ever eaten. This lead to sweating, hiccups, and tripping balls! I giggled and eventually he felt OK and finished his meal. He loved the burger and said the best part was the aged cheddar. We will definitely be back to try other items on the menu and so that I can do the wing challenge. I'll admit it. I wanted to go there after it was on the tube with the wing challenge thing on Man vs. Food. Big mistake!! Eight of us tried to get in one night for drinks and maybe food. Attitude,attitude,attitude!! We couldn't sit there until we did this etc.etc. We couldn't get bar service at a booth in front but if we moved ONE BOOTH OVER we could. Eight adults from 60 yrs. plus (me) to my brother,sister-in-law, niece,her boyfriend,friends of theirs,my wife,etc. Youngest was my niece at 25+. To cut to the chase, we left and dropped a pile of cash at the Kitchen Upstairs. I love and understand Boulder. My brother and family have lived there for over 30 yrs. I live in Greeley and we don't put up with crap like that!! Far more better places in Boulder for us to visit. read more

The view from the deck is amazing indeed. It's a bit more restricted by buildings (helloooooo St. Julien blocking my view) but gotta roll with the changes, eh? At least the West End Tavern is still there, right? Ok, so, not to get too specific but the mahi sandwich is pretty darn good. Word to the wise though, ask for it with a plain ol' white bun. They seem to have tried to trick it out with a nutty whole wheat bun and it's just weird with the fish. The fries of course are as good as pub fries get, which is pretty good; I ordered a side salad instead of fries - big mistake! - well, it was ok actually, it was kind of wierd though, an iceberg wedge with crumbled blue cheese - which would've been fine and all had they not poured creamy sun dried tomato dressing on there first. It was just a bit wacky on the tongue. Stick with fries. Trust. Beers on tap are local and seasonal which is cool, nothing wrong with Boulder brew pride. Loved that Skinny Dip ale from Left Hand Brewery (known for Fat Tire, which some used to call Flat Tire, which was harsh). My friend had a Ceasar salad which she said was "mayonaisy" (and we like mayo!). So, even though we give it so-so food reviews, we go there often when we're in Boulder, the deck is awesome and the service is very good. Cheers. read more

Came at 4pm on Sunday, was told it was 30 min wait for table, finally sat, was told it would be 30 minutes before we could even order any food. Took 15 minutes to get drinks, once we were able to place good order we gave our individual food orders and was THEN told they were out of the items we had ordered and many others! Thanks for telling us! Our waitress was in a terrible, awful mood. We asked to pay for drinks and got a 'hold on' from waitress. Took my card for 10 minutes. I'm no doctor, there's no evidence to test, and it's certainly possible it wasn't the West End that made me sick. It's still my gut (ha) intuition that it was. We wanted to follow up with you about the incident from your review. We serve hundreds of wings a day and your feedback was the only one of its kind in years. Technically, food poisoning can occur from anything you ate in the 72 hours prior because it takes that long to culture with certain strains. We would hate for you to stop coming to the West End based on your experience and our confident in running numbers and talking with our chefs that you could not have gotten sick from our product. With the amount of wings that went out that day and the days surrounding, we are certain that if it was our product we would have heard about it from multiple sources. Ate on roof top with family. BBQ was very good! Brisket, pulled pork and chicken was delicious. We had nachos for the table and we devoured them! Great beer selection. We decided to go to the West End Tavern when the in-laws were visiting in town. We had walked back and forth on Pearl St. looking for a place that had some reasonably priced food but wasn't a chain. We are fairly new in town so we weren't sure what was good or not. We ended up here after looking at the menu. We ate upstairs on the patio, which was nice and probably has decent views in the daytime. The menu isn't very extensive, yet it still took me a long time to finally decide on...the tavern cheeseburger. It is made from local beef and actually was very good. I ordered it with the coleslaw, which I wasn't a huge fan of (it was a tangy, vinegary coleslaw and a bit too tart for me)...next time I'd get the fries. My husband ordered the house smoked pork shoulder, which he liked (it's not pulled pork, but sliced), but he didn't care too much for the yam chips since they were a bit overcooked. My in-laws shared the fish and chips and it was HUGE. They brought out two plates with the fish n chips and coleslaw, and we though they had brought out two orders by accident. After doublechecking with our waitress, they assured us that it was one order split onto two plates for them. We were shocked because it was super ginormous. Next time, I'm ordering the Cod fish n chips! Someone at a neighboring table had the steak with the shrimp & lobster mac n cheese, which also looked really good. I'm not sure if they offer that as a side, but if they do, I'd give it a try. Overall I thought it was a good restaurant. I didn't experience the frat-boy experience that a previous poster mentioned. It was a very mellow, eating out on the patio experience and the waitstaff were super friendly. My husband and I came in for lunch a few days ago while visiting Boulder, we had asked around for places we needed to check out during our time here and The West End was highly recommended. We came in on our last day in town and I am sad to say we did not have a very enjoyable experience. The atmosphere inside felt cozy and warm. The food was delicious and tasted of good quality meat. The beer was fresh and glasses clean! However, our server is what led this to being a 2 star review compared to something higher. My husband was asking about the burgers and general things about the menu and our server did not seem to care. He never looked at us once while describing anything. Our conversation with him felt rushed and his descriptions fell short. It seemed a little rude and made us feel uncomfortable. My husband had multiple questions but reframed from asking them as our server did not make us feel valued. We ended up stopping and asking another waiter who was very helpful and provided great suggestions. I will say I was surprised at how many employees were walking around and chatting when I saw trash laying on the floor, gave the feel that no one cared. The bathrooms are located in the basement of the restaurant, the stairs give a very dizzying effect. The food is 5 stars. We wanted to love this restaurant but unfortunately it fell a little flat for us. read more

We went in yesterday and we were so disappointed. It seemed like the staff decided as soon as we walked in the door that they weren't going to treat us like 'real' customers, and that trend continued throughout our visit. We were seated at the very top floor at a dirty table (still had the previous party's check on it) with our 8yo& 1yo sandwiched in between people getting joyously drunk and people shouting about the football game on super high bar chairs- were never offered a booth but eventually we just moved to one that opened. Our orders were made wrong, and after taking our initial order, our waiter never came back until we literally chased him down and asked for our check. The food was completely blah, flavorless, and frankly, worse than five guys, which is my lowest personal burger standard. Maybe their other dishes are better, but I doubt it based off the food we ordered. Won't be back. read more
