My husband, friends, and I ventured across Narragansett Bay to Bristol for lunch. We weren't sure where we would end up but we found this legendary saloon and decided to give it a try. Our server Sonny cheerfully greeted us, made food and drink recommendations, listened and catered to our allergies, and took our orders quickly and accurately. She went above and beyond to make sure my shellfish allergy could be accommodated by speaking with the kitchen staff and calling the owner. I was happy to hear that the smash burger and French fries were safe for my to eat, and they did not disappoint!!! I ordered a painkiller that was insanely reminiscent of the painkillers at The Soggy Dollar in the BVI. Highly recommend it! This place has many cool historical features that contribute to its charm. At first I really liked this place and probably would've left a five stars-- before I explain more, I do still think it's worth popping by for a casual bite. The burger I ordered (bacon cheeseburger with no bacon) was delicious. No complaints there and I will probably reorder. The only problem here was that I asked for sweet potato fries instead of regular fries, to which the waiter simply said okay. Turns out it was an undisclosed upcharge. Not only did he not tell me it would be $2.75 (or something like that) more, but the fries are listed as the same price online. When I told him that, he said that their online menu is really old (this is to say, don't look at it! and also, not sure why they wouldn't update it if they know it's incorrect). Sure enough, the printed menu also said nothing about an upcharge for a different fry, so ultimately I was able to remove the charge, but it was a little awkward and frustrating. My only other complaint is not particularly the fault of the restaurant, but I suppose just a side effect of the laidback vibes. A group of 7 or 8 people came in like 20 minutes after us and was so loud that I almost suggested we leave. My guess is they were drunk, but it was a Wednesday night around 6:00, so I wouldn't have expected that. They were so loud that I was yelling to my friend who was within arm's length. It has been a while since I have been here. JR bean has a Bristol landmark for a quite sometime. I have been coming here at least 20 years. The biggest surprise this time was a brand new food menu. Much improved and has more contemporary take on the bar food. Its as if the Japanese Izakaya influence has been infused into some of the menu items - Karaage for example. It is not called that on the menu, however. Gotta try other items on the emenu The service was great. Usually is. Maybe extra attentive because it was a Monday night. Seat yourself, the food was great!! Service was a little slow but it was so worth it, believe all the food was cooked to order! Burger was great, shrimp tacos were great but the star of the menu was the Japanese fried chicken with pickled zucchini! They need to make that a full meal instead of an appetizer with bigger portions. The sauce, chicken and pickled zucchini was so tasty! Would definitely go back! The saloon was welcoming and felt like a time warp as soon as you walked in the door. Loved the old time feel and laid back atmosphere. We started out with the pretzel sticks and beer cheese for our appetizer. It was really good and we all enjoyed it. I ordered a strawberry margarita that was perfectly made. The goat cheese salad with honey vinegarette dressing was excellent (but the added chicken was kind of dry) The servers were attentive as possible while being short handed. Stopped in here during the State Street festival on a Saturday afternoon. It was pretty packed with people watching college football. We were sat pretty quickly but it did take awhile to get waited on. Once we did, the waiter was very good and our food came out quickly. My friends had the short rib grilled cheese. They said that the meat was cut into large pieces which made it pretty hard to eat. Their French fries were really good. I had the goat cheese salad, as I love the croquettes at another restaurant. For the price, it really wasn't that great. The chicken was good but had fatty pieces and there definitely wasn't enough lettuce. I get this same salad for the same price at the Tipsy Toboggan and the amount of food and presentation doesn't compare. Overall, I'd give this place a 3.5 for service and for food. read more

This was the first time trying Judge Roy Bean's since we moved to Bristol (7 months ago). That was a mistake, we should have actually come in months ago ! We had the best waiter/bartender ever. Mr Hugo made us feel so welcome, made us the best drinks, and served us the best food. The wife and I really just wanted to get out and relax for a little while at one of Bristol's eateries. Excellent chicken wrap with goat cheese. A couple of prices of fatty meat, but mostly I enjoyed it. I sat outside and the waitress/bartender gave me great service. The chairs outside are very uncomfortable and need to be replaced. They sink in the middle and it feels like you're sitting on 2 metal bars. I had a nice view of the water while dining outside. Makes up for the slightly high price. I think my wrap was over $18...kinda pricey for lunch. I'd go back, though I may try Aiden's first because they have a large outdoor patio across from the Prudence Island ferry, which was the main reason for my visit to Bristol in the first place! read more

We had a fun time at the Saloon. Wait staff were exceptional and very accommodating. We were coming from a dance show at the university and we had our own cake for a birthday. They said no problem and even got us candles and a lighter. Food was on par for bar eats and the French fries were very fresh. Pretzels were soft, hot and tasty. Fish tacos were excellent. Great specialty cocktails. At the indoor setting it almost felt like it was outside with the big windows that were open on a beautiful day. There are so many great spots in Bristol to try, this is one of them. On recommendation of the very friendly bartender, I had a fried buffalo chicken sandwich and fries. The sandwich was AWESOME. Super juicy chicken and good buffalo sauce, also the bun was like a brioche or something. It was a perfect compliment to the spice. If you are sensitive to spicy food, this one is just on the edge of maybe too spicy. The fries (hand cut I'm told) are legitimately some of the best I've ever had. Super crispy and perfect seasoning. I was just in for a quick bite, but I could definitely see hanging out here for a few drinks on a warm summer day. Also, it's right around the corner from the ferry dock, it that helps. read more

I was visiting Newport, RI and stumbled upon this worthy establishment and immediately felt the appeal as I entered the door and saw the wood-adorned interior with the cozy temperature and chill vibe it exuded. I saw the redneck sangria as the special and felt inclined to ask about it. Since it was bourbon-based, I went along with it because it came with a strip of candied bacon and pork really does rule everything around me. The service was phenomenal and our waitress really went over an behind to make sure we had a drink at all times along with impeccable attention to detail. She answered all my questions and made various recommendations on what we ended up ordering next. My family has found this place to be a new favorite to frequent a few times a month. They finally had us join them and we're happy we tried it. It was a nice Fall day and the windows were open to the restaurant allowing fresh air to come in. Been to The Bean a number of times for lunch and have always enjoyed it, but went in last weekend w my fiance for an early evening dinner. A handful of patrons were at the bar and a few tables, it was early. A hostess at a podium showed us to a table, and were given menus. After perusing the menu for several minute, a young waiter from the cadre at the end of the bar came over and took both our drink and food orders and drifted away. As we chatted, the minutes slowly built up: five coming on ten, without refreshments in hand...or sight. Looking over we see our waiter with the rest of the young waitstaff at bar's end, all fixated on their mobile screens. Finally one breaks from the group to tend a nearby table, we ask her about our drinks, and she replies that the bartender is "making them now, and your waiter should be bringing them out shortly." More minutes go by and our waiter is still captivated by his cell. Clearly 'work' is an inconvenience for him...when 'on the job'. Our constant grimacing glances barward beget not a budge, from neither waitstaff nor the ever disappearing hostess. Situational Awareness - ZERO. I do believe a manager made a brief appearance towards the end, but by then we'd had enough... 15 closing on 20 and we take our leave for nearby DeWolf Tavern, where the attentive bar staff took great care of us and we had a great meal...! read more

Recommended by bartender at Thames down the street. It was kinda of dead and a dive bar. I don't know why I stayed. I didn't finish my drink. I didn't feel the vibe. My bartender was kinda at the far end right side talking to her friends or regulars. Had to wait awhile to get her attention. It was hot out. When she filled my glass with ice that what is to the top and filled it with my drink it became watered down. I didn't want to say anything because it look like they were already busy talking with all the customers. I just couldn't finish my drink. Left it. I feel that I really need to leave an updated review. Once restaurants were allowed to have outdoor dining. this was one of the first places I came to. I've eaten here a few times pre COVID-19 and the food is always delicious and fresh. I gota say I LOVE what they did with their outside seating w/the nautical theme. Plus, you look straight ahead and the water is right there. And I want to give our waitress Alaina a shoutout. She was our waitress the first time we went to JRB when outside dining was allowed. Let me tell you, she was awesome. Very personable, friendly and was a riot to joke around with. JRB's take care of her! We need more waitstaff like her! They also now offer indoor dining following Phase III in RI. Chill, warm, cozy and laid back describes the atmosphere inside Judge Roy Beans. So whether you're coming here for drinks at the bar (hopefully that will be allowed soon), dinner, or just apps, this place is perfect. A good number of big screens to catch a game (if we get sports back) and enjoy some adult beverages. Judge Roy Beans is definitely one of your better options in Bristol. read more

It was awesome to see, especially in the winter on a Wednesday! I got a red neck sangria which is made with Downeast Cider and topped with the most delectable candied bacon. This is like real deal slab bacon, coated in a delicious brown sugar crust.... GET THIS! We then quickly learned that it was WING NIGHT. Half off wings! That made each order like $4.50. These were delicious. We got an order of Classic Buffalo, Sesame Ginger & Jamaican Jerk. To be honest, they were all delicious. The blue cheese dressing is like real deal, full of flavor homemade blue cheese. We split a JR Bean Burger and I feel like something changed from what I remember it being... Came for a quick dinner on a weeknight. Definitely exceeded expectations! My server Erin was great and the oysters appetizer (forget the name) was amazing. Bacon and oysters are separately two of my favorite things, so to have them combined made for a mouthgasm. I tried the bean burger and it was so so good. Juicy, sweet, and salty which is a perfect combination. It's a little greasy and heavy but cmon guys, we're at a saloon -- not your friend's mom's healthy-dinner-and-yoga-night.
