    Banana French toast

I've been coming here since they opened. The past 5ish years it's been hit or miss. I used to love it. The place has a cute diner hip vibe. The servers are always nice & chill. The food is lacking. Our French toast was great. 5 stars. The last time I was there I had the hash brown, which was a flavorless greasy brick. We keep saying it's our last time, but have tried most of the menu the past 2 years. Nothing to write home about for the price. We are close by, but would rather go to Yolk where the servings are huge & always delish. This time I got the lemon blueberry pancakes. For $13 I expected more. 3 pancakes, 1 was tiny. The coffee is dark matter which is a plus. I'm sure I'll make my way back hoping for a menu upgrade.

We came here for brunch. Prime location but parking can be a bit crazy in West town. We ordered a Dirty Chi latte, Chi latte, Latte and for food the Breakfast tacos, Classic breakfast, and a BLT. Not sold on the food but the outdoor patio was a nice touch and the service was nice!

The food came out very quickly and was really good! The server was friendly, helpful, and thoughtful. We told her we are sharing dishes and she split them up into 4 separate plates. The inside was cute , but we ate in the patio since we had a dog with us. They brought our water for our dog as well. The lattes were tasty as well !

It's a cute place with good coffee. Got the Eckhart sandwich with an add on of their special shaped hash browns. The sandwich was tasty but something I could put together myself. Disappointed with the hash browns that I have read great reviews on here. It did not taste fresh, like leftover hash browns. Service was good.

Food was great. Lots of breakfast choices and some lunch options. I have been coming to this place off and on for the 10 years. I always stop by when I'm visiting and they have never disappointed. The service is fast and friendly. The ambiance is modern city meets 50s diner. Great coffee and desert options as well.

I stumbled across this place on a whim. After being here a couple times I can definitely say I do not regret it. I have only eaten here at the bakery and not the diner. The pastries here go pretty quick so if you are a coffee and pastry person. I will suggest you get there early or call ahead and ask what they have left for the day if you go later. They have a lot of seasonal pastries so the rotation is really a surprise. The iced coffee is pretty solid, nothing too crazy. Danish I had was flavorful but a little dry. The cinnamon roll monkey bread pastry was very flavorful as well with a lot of textures from the ingredients. I would definitely recommend.

The best hash browns in the world. Fresh bread! Dark Matter Coffee! Pastries! Everything you want for breakfast and more.

Superb biscuit sandwich (the Eckhart Park) with great cookery on the sausage patty, eggs, and buttermilk biscuit. I really enjoyed my Dirty Chai Latte. Service was upbeat and very attentive (in a helpful way). They seem to have seasonal espresso-based drinks with fun syrups if you're into that thing (which I am). This place came enthusiastically recommended by a vegan friend, so I'll be back to try their vegan options and seasonal coffee options.

Came here for brunch with friends - group of 8 I ordered an iced coffee and was served the chocolate city iced coffee but it was a bit odd and didn't taste like normal drip and had a ton of froth like a beer lol. I ordered the hullabaloo skillet. Hands down the best skillet I've ever eaten and my favorite. If you love savory and mushrooms and onions this one is for you - at least it is for me lol. Will def be back for that! Side note, their hash browns look like pieces toast but are really good!! My order came out a few mins after everyone else's which I didn't care about but our waitress provided some free cake balls at the end which was so sweet. We weren't huge fans of the cake balls though but it was such a great gesture.

We enjoyed visiting West Town Bakery! They have a sit down diner and a walk up coffee bar. The first day we visited the coffee bar and got some pastries and coffee to go. My group tried the dirty chai scone, blueberry lemon scone, almond raspberry croissant, and a plain croissant. We all thought they were delicious! My coffee was also made super quick and tasted great. We decided to go back a second day to take some cake balls home with us and ended up sitting at a table. The waiter was very friendly! I tried the yogurt parfait and really enjoyed it. I tried the classic sampler for the cake balls. My favorite was the vanilla sprinkle. They were a bit too moist for me and I'm not sure I would order them again. However my friends really enjoyed there's.

Best brunch in Chicago! Whenever my friends come into town to celebrate our Christmas weekend together in the beginning of December, we all visit West Town Bakery together. They are very accommodating to our large group and will always seat our booths together. We usually have the same waiter every year too who always takes good care of us. Food is delicious and so is their coffee. Highly recommend!

Find the best location at the original location of this bakery and diner. It has a large seating area unlike the others which are a lot smaller than here. West Town Bakery And Diner is of course located in West Town. Kind of high prices as expected. They have lots of pastries as well as large skillets. A few times it serves a partial menu so don't be shocked if the selection is limited. It often only does a small brunch menu. They apparently only have the full menu available on weekends. Anyway you can still come any day and get something good. They have a ton of breads and pastries. Coffee is always available. It's about $3 for a cup. The last time here I had the Oatmeal. It's about $7.50 to get it with no toppings but it's kind of plain so you need to pay a couple more bucks. This is made with brown sugar, maple syrup, and soy milk. Get berries. These include blueberries and strawberries. Has more stuff available on weekends but of course those are a lot busier. It luckily has quite a lot of indoor seating. They have many good items for vegans.

They were a bit short-staffed that morning, so service was slower than usual, but we weren't in a hurry and the staff remained friendly throughout. I ordered the daily special French toast, added fruit and pecans, plus a side of bacon. The French toast was absolutely massive and could easily be shared. My only complaint was the $3.75 charge for pecans, which felt a little steep for the amount included. Overall, the food was good, the diner atmosphere was exactly what I was hoping for, and there's something special about dining in such a historic Chicago institution. If you're visiting the city and don't mind a bit of a wait, Lou Mitchell's is worth experiencing at least once.

And this is on top of the city parking you have to pay to eat there. It's just craziness. I will say that the toast was pretty delicious. The server was nice enough. I would assume a place where the newest thing since the 1980s is the security camera would have vinyl with more cracks and patina than my trusty old leather jacket! But no, it's in fantastic shape. Especially given that, the vibe in here is awesome! It's like stepping through a time-portal. For food, I ordered an old favorite: Pigs in Blankets. The food came out fast, though, to be fair, there was only one other person dining in at the time. The sausage links were crisp, and the pancakes were lightly sweet and fluffy. All in all, great! While perhaps not enough to summon the Michelin Guide inspectors, it was better than the average greasy spoon. Finally, I really appreciate that the prices are reasonable, and that there is parking! Final verdict: I've had a small handful of spectacular breakfasts. I've also had criminal breakfasts, where two unsalted eggs, two bacon strips, and a tablespoon of potatoes costs $14.95. Golden House Restaurant & Pancake House finds itself in that sweet spot in between - it is neither a spectacular spot (often have prices to boot), nor is it an overpriced, underwhelming greasy spoon that stays in business thanks to regulars who have been coming for decades and don't want anything better.

I had the single cheeseburger and it lived up to the hype. I learned that the single burger is actually a double and the double is actually a triple. The process of getting seated through a busy period, and the service throughout was excellent. But as often happens with me, the food didn't live up to the hype. My wife and I were picking up my brother and his son from O'Hare at around 10 am on a Saturday. We had dinner plans with our uncle, but had not planned anything in between. The flight came in on time, and once confirmed we all had the time, my brother suggested going to Chicago to try Au Cheval. He knew about their location LV, but none of us had tried their original location in Chicago. So we drove into Chicago, arriving at the restaurant at 11 (it opens at 10am). There was a check-in stand set-up outside, where someone was taking names/phone numbers to put on the waiting list. We were quoted a 45 minute wait, and got the text to hurry back after about 30 minutes. There was a line to put your name down on the list, so we skipped that by going right in. The friendly hostess seated us in a booth, with a nice view of the kitchen where they were making the burgers in mass. The waitress explained that a single burger meant two patties (each patty is 4 oz, so basically a half pound burger), and a double meaning three. My brother and his son both ordered a double cheeseburger ($19.99 each), and I got a single with added sunny side up egg ($21.48). I wanted my wife to be able to take a bite, so asked for everything to be on the side (sauce, dill pickle slices, and grilled onion bits). We also ordered french fries ($8.99), cooked in duck fat. In the meanwhile, followed a fellow yelpers suggestion and got two Allagash Whites ($9 each) for me and my nephew. It's a really good beer that I've had many times during happy hour, and goes great with rich, greasy food. My wife got something else: the General Janes Chicken, which is their version of Korean Fried Chicken ($24.98). She enjoyed it (the coating was still crispy, and the sauce had that pronounced kochujang flavor that we like). Everything is a la carte here (except for the complementary pickle spear with burgers), so she shared in the ordered fries. Food came out together and was served hot. There is a mandatory 3.25% surcharge, and payment is taken at the table. As mentioned, service was excellent throughout. To be honest, I'm not the right person to judge a burger like this (I like it backyard style, with a lot of lettuce, tomato, onion, and pickles...and mayo/ketchup). But my brother and nephew are (they have tried many, many burgers all across the world, and don't like too much toppings on their burger), and they said the burger was just OK for them. I liked the frites (cooked in duck fat)...very light in color, but still crispy on the outside. However, nobody else really ate them, saying they weren't great. It's unusual for me to be the least critical after dining, but I'm sure it had something to do with the observation that I didn't have to pay for it (since it was my brother's treat).
