The hardest place in the world to order a cake. I was a loyal customer for years, going back to the Bleeding Heart Bakery days. Unfortunately, my recent experience was so frustrating that I will never order from them again. If you call, nobody answers. If you leave a message, nobody calls back. I finally drove there in person to place an order at the counter, which I had done many times before. Instead, I was told all cake orders must be placed online because they are handled by a different department. It felt more like dealing with a bureaucracy than a bakery. I asked the employee how long it would take to get a non-custom cake and was told 48 hours. It was Friday morning, so I went home and ordered one of their signature cakes online. To my surprise, the first available pickup date was four days later. The cake is good, but not good enough to justify jumping through this many hoops. The entire process felt like ordering something during the height of COVID restrictions. After years of being a customer, this experience convinced me not to come back. They didn't just lose a sale--they lost a longtime customer. read more

West Town Bakery is an insanely fun baked goodies and breakfast joint. It has the most lugubrious room a cake ball has ever been served in. The people who work there are happy happy happy. The food there is happy happy happy. You will leave there happy happy happy. And if you were filming a movie about a woman in a deep urban depression - you would use their dining room to shoot a lot of the key scenes. * * * The room is cavernous. The lightbulbs that light the room might be 40 watts. I am more likely to think 30 watts or 25 watts. You eat in this cavernous hall shrouded in shadows. Some light filters in from the front windows and Chicago Avenue. At the back of the cavern is the kitchen. There is no wall between the kitchen and the dining room. Just an enormous wall of glass. The kitchen is dazzlingly lit in fluorescent work-lights so the bakers there can cook your breakfast. In the dark room, it looks like you are looking at a surgical theater. On the front left corner, they have their cake baking kitchen, which is separate from the diner, cookie and donut baking kitchen. This too has no walls and is boxed in by glass. This too is lit like a surgical theater. I kept waiting for them to bring in the first patient and start doing emergency work. * * * But the food and the baked goods ... OMG. Carnival Treat Day All the Way. I had an orange and mascarpone French toast with fresh blueberries and strawberries. It was the loveliest French toast I have ever had. I am used to the big thick cloying versions of French Toast served by competing 3200 calorie brunch restaurants. The competition French Toast just leaves me over-full and disgusted. I end up feeling like someone dredged wet bread in a pound of sugar and stuffed the whole thing down my throat. The only flavor comes from the maple syrup and that flavor ain't much - maple syrup being what it is these days. West Town Bakery's French toast technically serves you a lot of bread. But it tastes light. It tastes ORANGE-y. (Orange is the point of the exercise here.) The mascarpone makes the dish lighter rather than more cloying. Their fresh berries are full of flavor. (To be fair, I live in Texas where berries are grown for transshipment and have all the flavor of packing peanuts. Readers in the Midwest and Pacific Northwest are used to getting good berries and will less impressed with what I say about Chicago berries.) Having said everything I just said - I honestly think the secret of West Town Bakery's French Toast is that they use West Town Bakery's homemade bread. My guess is that they custom bake loaves of bread especially for French toast. This is not the stupid Texas Toast served in Texas. Nor is it plain old white bread cut thick. They have done something to make their basic bread vastly superior. Then when they add all those wonderful ingredients - the pleasures multiply and multiply. * * * I took a quick look over at the dairy case ... And was hit with a million attacks of "I want this now, I need this now." Bakery racks don't usually set me off. (Exception: Wonderful traditional artisanal Mexican bakeries ... and eclair bakeries. I lose all resistance at both types of places.) Well, I lost resistance at West Town too. So I also got a Dark Matter Donut. Dark Matter is the name of their coffee roaster. Dark Matter coffee is fine fine coffee. I got the bottomless cup and loved every single drop. A Dark Matter Donut is West Town's version of a coffee donut. It is a cake donut. It is NOT repeat NOT cannonball-heavy the way that most commercial cake donuts are. A Dunkin or Krispy Kreme cake donut will sit in the pit of your stomach like a 30 pound kettlebell. This was solid and substantial the way a cake donut is supposed to be While being just substantial enough with no overkill. It was a little sweet but not too sweet. The coffee gave a nice baritone flavor ... but the coffee was subtle. This was just a perfect cake donut. No more. No less. I was delighted to have it. * * * My wife was not as thrilled about her bagel with lox as I was with my French toast and donut. She likes her bagels thoroughly toasted on the grill - and the house preference is a lighter touch. She felt the bagel ended up soggy. * * * That said, I was ecstatic about my breakfast at West Town Bakery. The staff who served us were all really upbeat people - much more upbeat than is called for by the standard smiling "may we help you?" I think they were happy because they get these really good baked goods all the time. * * * As for eating in the shadows outside two operating theaters ... Orange mascarpone French toast can solve a hundred zillion interior decorating problems. read more

I've been coming here since they opened. The past 5ish years it's been hit or miss. I used to love it. The place has a cute diner hip vibe. The servers are always nice & chill. The food is lacking. Our French toast was great. 5 stars. The last time I was there I had the hash brown, which was a flavorless greasy brick. We keep saying it's our last time, but have tried most of the menu the past 2 years. Nothing to write home about for the price. We are close by, but would rather go to Yolk where the servings are huge & always delish. This time I got the lemon blueberry pancakes. For $13 I expected more. 3 pancakes, 1 was tiny. Came here for brunch with friends - group of 8 I ordered an iced coffee and was served the chocolate city iced coffee but it was a bit odd and didn't taste like normal drip and had a ton of froth like a beer lol. I ordered the hullabaloo skillet. Hands down the best skillet I've ever eaten and my favorite. If you love savory and mushrooms and onions this one is for you - at least it is for me lol. My group tried the dirty chai scone, blueberry lemon scone, almond raspberry croissant, and a plain croissant. We all thought they were delicious! My coffee was also made super quick and tasted great. We decided to go back a second day to take some cake balls home with us and ended up sitting at a table. The waiter was very friendly! They are very accommodating to our large group and will always seat our booths together. We usually have the same waiter every year too who always takes good care of us. Find the best location at the original location of this bakery and diner. It has a large seating area unlike the others which are a lot smaller than here. West Town Bakery And Diner is of course located in West Town. Kind of high prices as expected. They have lots of pastries as well as large skillets. A few times it serves a partial menu so don't be shocked if the selection is limited. It often only does a small brunch menu. They apparently only have the full menu available on weekends. Anyway you can still come any day and get something good. They have a ton of breads and pastries. Coffee is always available. It's about $3 for a cup. The last time here I had the Oatmeal. It's about $7.50 to get it with no toppings but it's kind of plain so you need to pay a couple more bucks. This is made with brown sugar, maple syrup, and soy milk. Get berries. These include blueberries and strawberries. Has more stuff available on weekends but of course those are a lot busier. It luckily has quite a lot of indoor seating. For me the bakery is 5/5 and the diner is 3/5 but I may just need to order differently from the diner. First the bakery- Croissant - fluffy, buttery, delicious Ham and cheese croissant - hefty amount of ham and cheese but good if you're looking for something hearty. Herb and goat cheese croissant - incredible. I suspect basil might be one of the herbs. Husband and I have to get two or else bloodshed ensues. Chocolate - not for me. As any GBBO fan will attest adding cocoa powder to the croissant dough changes the texture and I suspect this is what sort of ruins it for me. But never fear if you crave chocolate there are two great options- cake balls or chocolate muffin. I swear the muffin is just cake without icing so quite similar and very delicious. The diner- Tried two different breakfast sandwiches, neither was particularly memorable though mine was on a bagel that was so fluffy and fresh it would be worth trying just a bagel next time. Most noteworthy is the hashbrown. It is sort of like a hash brown patty but in the shape of toast with light seasoning and fried. Tasty and very rich. Also would like to shout out the service, always friendly and thoughtful, when we dined in the dog friendly outdoor section our waiter brought a bowl of water for the pup. tl;dr: great breakfast spot without the long wait and delicious pastries! ---- Didn't think we would find a place to walk up to on a Saturday morning for breakfast but were pleasantly surprised to stumble upon West Town Bakery! We were seated immediately outside for two people. The line for pastries inside was a bit longer, but it seemed to be moving quickly. The menu was extensive. I got the Eckhart Park bfast sandwich with a side of hashbrowns. The hashbrowns were huge for only $2! They had this delicious hot sauce too which I'm forgetting the name of but it was actually spicy and really flavorful. The biscuit was buttery and moist and the ratio of ingredients to bread was perfect vs other bfast sammies which can be too much of one or the other. While waiting for our food, we went inside and ordered pastries from the counter. Super simple process and was added to our table. The service was very friendly. There was a slowdown in the kitchen so our food took a bit longer than expected, but we were happy to wait. Our waiter ended up not charging us for our pastries to compensate for the long wait time. Much appreciated. We ended up walking but seemed like there is plenty of street parking nearby. Definitely will be back here! read more

Tried the cake balls today for the first time and I was definitely impressed! They have so many flavors to choose from, I went with an Andes mint chocolate cake ball and the red velvet cake ball. I was particularly impressed by the Andes mint chocolate cake ball as it was covered in generous amounts of mint chocolate and definitely very substantial. I've only had breakfast here and it's always solid. The coffee is by Dark Matter, so you definitely know that it's guaranteed to be good. There's a huge selection of pastries. I find the muffins and scones to be a bit denser than I'd like. They're known for the cake balls, which are always a solid option. As for sitting down for brunch, the portions were massive! The omelet was classic and I thought the hash browns were really unique. They're the size of slices of toast and pretty thick. Super crisp with soft potato hash inside. This review is my first dining in experience. Before I get to that though I will say the service is quite slow whether you are popping in to the to-go area or dining in. Expect to wait even though they aren't busy. Service when we dined in was friendly enough but slow. The hash browns are genuinely, without a doubt, second-place-isn't-even-close the best has brown I've ever had. Extremely hot and crispy exterior, dense but fluffy potato inside, seasoned well with salt. This is what a McDonald's hash brown wishes it could be. I will truly come here from now on just to order a hash brown to go. Eggs Benedict was tasty but a little cold and the bread wasn't toasted, which ended up being a bit unpleasant and turned soggy quickly. Bagel sandwich looked great but my partner didn't share this time We ordered a plain cold brew and an iced mocha, which we didn't receive from the coffee bar for about 20 minutes. For my personal taste the mocha was pretty good, it was definitely a homemade mocha syrup and not very sweet. For most people, including my partner who ordered it, he was expecting a more classic iced mocha that had some sweetness to it and thought it was the wrong order entirely. My cold brew was good quality- definitely strong and smooth. We decided after our meal that we teeny unhappy but we won't dine in here anymore with the general ambiance and the slow service. There's a lot of seriously amazing pastries on west town as well, so for the service level you may want to pick Hoosier Mama or Aya Pastry instead if it's for pastries to go. Stopped by West Town Bakery for a little Saturday brunch in the hood and had a good time. I was really impressed by all of the vegetarian / vegan options. They had a lot more than I'd expected. There wasn't a wait for a table for 2, which was great while the restaurant was still bustling. The service was also really good. Food taste was pretty good. The peanut butter pancakes were really good. Enjoyed the flavor, but I couldn't have more than one. It gets kind of rich. The tofu scramble was ok. It wasn't spicy at all, as promised. Could've used a bit of a kick. The hot sauce we got on the side was also not very hot and a bit too vinegar-y. The coffees were good and the bagel was fine. Lastly, the hash brown are like bricks of potato, as opposed to a shredded potato serving, so something to note. I requested them extra crispy, but didn't know they were more of a square patty. On my way out, I grabbed me a fresh loaf of white bread. I'm excited to see how that turns out. Hope it's good. Overall, it was a good first visit. I want to see how the tofu chorizo tastes - hopefully it's more bang for the buck than the scramble. Maybe next time. read more

Got some cake balls from the Best Date Foodies Patreon. I went with the lemon almond, animal cracker, carrot cake, and candy corn. They all had a similar tasting base and the flavors were subtle. I've lived in the neighborhood for around 3 years and this place has really gone downhill. We went in around 9am, prime breakfast time, and ordered two main dishes from the menu plus a coffee and a diet coke. It was fairly dead, not too busy. The breakfast came out first, and my dish was completely cold, like it had been sitting out for at least 30 minutes. The coffee then showed up, that was good / as expected. Then my diet coke showed up in a 20oz dusty bottle and warm like it had been sitting next to a furnace. 2 stars because the cake balls are awesome. Every time we come here, it just gets worse and worse. Save yourself some heartache and go to the Sunrise Cafe down the street. They are fast, hot food (really good) and excellent service. read more

The crunchy/crispy exterior with the moist, soft and decadent chocolate center. The red velvet was also a classic and amazing. Let me tell you, I had one of the best sandwiches I have ever had from here! It was the crispy chicken melt and it was amazing!! I think the best part, for me, was the pesto aioli.
