Most places these days won't even acknowledge your presence when you're standing there like you've got nothing else better to do with your time. If you want some kind of bagel sandwich, a call in is a must unless you like ambling about taking awkward glances at the businesswomen and police officers who frequent this joint while you wait. It's pretty amazing in this day and age that Western bagel will refuse to cut your bagel evenly. My vendor orders approximately 20 dozen a day but the bagel top is always thin almost like cheese to where the bottom of the bagel won't even fit in a toaster. They have several types of yummy cream cheeses like Honey nut, bacon and chive, and regular...and so much more. The bagels were soft and chewy. This place is really impressive. We were regulars at WB before the pandemic and have been back only 2 times in 2 years....could not wait to go in the afternoon after the lunch crowds have gone only to find it closed. At 2:30pm. Devastated. Came back a week later at 1:30 got my favorite bagels and a large cream cheese. Devastated again, $15.50 (including tip) for 3 bagels and cream cheese? No thanks. Only 1 customer in front of me, guy finished with his customer....I wait...says he will be right with me....I wait (not in a hurry so no biggy), then he just left and so I waited for another clerk. Well maybe come back for bagels only, but not $9.40 for a large cream cheese, whipped at that. I know inflation I suppose. Also help was sort of meh compared to the old days. The sandwiches were decent today, my friend and I enjoyed it. They were decent AT BEST. Our paninis came COLD. You guys need to finish making your product and send it out in a timely manner. Why would I order a panini if it comes cold??? The service was not good. Everyone was basically a trainee and unable to answer any of my questions. It was honestly embarrassing. This is a food establishment and needs to be taken more seriously. I saw poor communication amongst the workers during my visit. Never had a bad experience at Western Bagel! The staff is always friendly-- they have never gotten my order wrong (and even if they did it wouldn't matter because they're just so darn nice). My favorite spread is lox. At Noah's it's more like flecks of lox or lox flavored cream cheese. At Western Bagel it's chunky! Also, the price is a bit friendlier, though I guess it's also because the bagels are a tad smaller. If you really like lox like I do, it doesn't get much better than Western Bagel's real lox with cream cheese. Yum! I tend to stick with Pumpernickel bread, but they have an amazing variety (chocolate chip, strawberry, egg, etc.) so you'll find your favorite. They also have soup/sandwich specials, but I am a woman of habit so I've yet to stray from my lox-ness monster. The only bummer is that they seem to run out of popular bagels, but I guess I should stop going there for a mid-afternoon snack. Damn you! Why must you be so conveniently located on my route to work each morning?? I'm not a huge fan of bagels, but every once and a while I find myself craving an onion with a ton of cream cheese. To satisfy that, I've stopped here a couple times in the past few weeks to bring bagels in for my myself and co-workers, and each time I've been very impressed. The employees are extremely courteous and patient when I'm trying to decide which ones I'm not going to be able to fit into the dozen. This place made me fall in love with bagels! well for awhile atleast. i don't eat it anymore cuhz its too much fat and carbs, but their bagels are so soft yet chewy, fresh, and delicious. I remember eatin at western bagel with my family every sunday morning. Onion cheese bagel toasted with cream cheese.... memories! it doesn't compare to other bagel shops. Today I am in the valley - when you live n Atascadero, that may not be too often, and western bagel is everywhere and that means pumpernickel bagels! I live across the street from this place so I usually go here at least once a weekend. On the good side, their bagels are awesome! (The onion and the glazed bagels are great!) On the bad side, the place to line up is always just a pile of people and it's hard to tell who ordered. Both the staff and patrons always get confused. The staff is also really young and really busy so they mess up orders a lot. Just make sure to check before you leave - they are all friendly so they will fix it without an issue if there is any problem. Most important is the "credit card" secret. There is only one register (to the left) that takes credit cards so make sure to tell them that ahead of time. If you can, get cash and go to the register on the right after you've ordered. I work in Burbank and every day as lunch time rolls around I try to pick something new and exciting from among such luminaries as Poquito Mas and Subway. I had to run an errand today and on the way back to the office I spotted Western Bagel in a strip mall. The Boars Head sign didn't do anything for me other than assure me that sandwiches would be an option. I quickly glanced at the menu and ordered the first thing that sounded good - a bagel with lox. The counter woman specified "lox spread or actual lox". I'd only noticed lox spread on the menu so I was very happy to pick the actual lox option, on a toasted jalapeno bagel with light cream cheese. The bagel was not ideal but warm, well-toasted (not burnt) and had a good amount of jalapeno bits. The cream cheese was delicious to the point of me doubting its "lightness" (and I'm hopeful that it's light because it was slathered on with a heavy hand). Finally, the lox was rightly the star of the show - fresh, not too oily and with good flavor. Did I mention this all cost $5.50? Everything held up on the short drive to the office and made for a great change-of-pace lunch. I woke up this morning with a mission. A breakfast mission. Venturing out into 100 degree noon-time heat, I found my way to Western Bagels (which was chosen specifically for its number of stars on yelp). Upon arrival, I was overwhelmed with the number of choices of bagels and toppings. The bagels are super fresh and not too large, and they make their own cream cheese. The prices are fantastic. They had some really strange ones, like strawberry bagels, or a glazed one that looks like a bagel was bred with a donut. Their strawberry cream cheese has chunks of berries inside it. We went with two breakfast bagels- their choices were turkey/bacon/ham with cheddar/provalone/american/swiss on egg (i got bacon and cheddar and it was perfect) and additionally got cinnamon raisin, sprouted wheat sesame, onion, and egg. Oh man they smear that cream cheese on their bagels, like their bagel-hood depends on it. I love it. First of all, their selection is amazing. But like any other bagel shop, the chocolate chip bagels are MIA within a few hours of opening.Secondly, their shop is very spacious. Thirdly, I fell in love with their Vanilla Nut coffee. Such a rich aroma, that you'd never find in your generic, nearest Starbucks. It was pretty amusing the way I finally chose my bagel--and speaks volumes about their selection. Then, my eyes shifted in increasing delight when I saw the onion cheese--and then, finally, my true love: the everything + cheese bagel. I'd say this was no better than any other bagel in LA. It wasn't exceptionally chewy. I tried the everything bialy (round) and the poppy seed bagel. They were very fresh and the onion flavoring on the bialy was very pleasant. I was interested to see how crusty papery the bialy was--it was interesting and good. But once again--as it the case in all LA bagels, it was not like New York (or even SF now, with Schmendricks). There was a generous amount of cream cheese applied. And lots of varieties if you want them. Also, I saw a carved turkey on the counter--so it would seem you can get Thanksgiving quality turkey on your bagel if you wish. In my search for bagel fulfillment, I don't need to return, but if I had to, I would be happy. I will say two positives which push their review from a 3 to a 4. 1. Super friendly--the staff and even the customers seated inside--they all seem like regulars who just want to start your day off right. The Burbank store was just so pleasant! 2. Went to this Western Bagel in the morning, around 7am, hoping to get FRESH Bagels, instead I got onion bagels that were hard as rocks and clearly not made that day. Not only were the NOT FRESH! They taste bad! The cinnamon raisin bagels were also hard! Very disappointing! After spending over $20 in bagels only to have more than half of them go to the TRASH! Also, the staff was not friendly! The traditional with lox, cream cheese, capers, cucumbers, lettuce and tomato on a whole wheat bagel is so delicious, I keep ordering it. The smoked salmon is excellent. It isn't very salty. I tried the Hawaiian hazelnut coffee today and it was delicious also, even with minimal sugar and half & half (I'm working towards coffee w/o sweeteners & milk/cream). I visited Western Bagel for a quick breakfast egg sandwich bagel. I walked in and noticed that around 10AM, there was already a fair amount of people seated and enjoying their food and coffee and so I proceeded to the ordering line and was promptly served. I requested an egg, bacon, cheese on an everything bagel and the girl stated that they do have that eventhough I didn't see it on the menu. She made the sandwich and split it in half perfectly as instructed and the price was fair. It tasted fresh and delicious from the first bite to the last. I love to add ketchup to it (secret addition a friend taught me a while ago. I had a good experience at this location as the service and the food and overall ambiance were to par. The one thing I did not like is that I brought in my own travel mug and they insisted on charging full price for a coffee as opposed to the usual $.99 people charge (as a refill). I've been to Western Bagel probably about 6 or 7 times in the last 2 years since it is pretty convenient to my apartment and not once have they successfully managed to get my order right. Beyond that frustration the bagels are fairly small and not that good, even by LA standards which are pretty low having moved here from New York. As far as staff, they seem nice but take forever with your order and as referenced above, have a challenging time getting your order right. Finally, the flow of ordering/paying seems disorganized and I think they would benefit greatly from looking at models employed by successful bagel shops in New York like H&H. read more
