The Western Market has been a staple ever since my husband and I moved to Ferndale! The workers are exceptionally nice and always willing to help. The produce is fresh and the baked goods never disappoint (especially the sourdough!). The store is stocked with fresh juice, coffee, meat, prepared hot foods, salads, dairy, wine and frozen goods. Gluten free selection is killer, produce is affordable and the variety is fantastic. I even love the plants they carry.

My favorite market in the neighborhood. Killer prepared food, fresh meats, deserts, and the best small selection of wine in the state. The prepared food is about half the price of Holiday Market, and better. Back to the wine. I went in the other day to buy 2 mangoes, and i walked out with 6 bottles of rare Italian wines that I have never seen in the US, Including an organic Gorizian white made by a super low volume artisan winemaker. Props to the wine guy! Also, they stock the rare in these parts "From the Tank" French box wines, which are amazing. read more

Having recently moved to the area and (very) within walking distance of 9Mile X Woodward I've shopped all the markets in the area and can safely say Western Market quickly became the main source to fill my fridge. My partner is a vegetarian, so we need to go big on or go home on produce and this place delivers. Some reviews have stated that the produce is dirty but that has not been my experience at all -- if anything I sometimes question how polished and waxy certain products seem. I suppose if I were to come across some fruits and veggies that needed a bath I would simply remind myself that they came from the earth. The selection of organic and local produce isn't just good it is CHEAP and well worth supporting the smaller guy. My only qualm is that some of their specials are simply items starting to go bad which is fine, no point having it all go to waste, but there should be someone keeping an eye on the stock. No one wants to have to sift through countless bad strawberries to find one fresh enough and delightfully cheap pack. As far as the rest of the market the prices seem similar to other spots on 9 Mile, nothing impressive or offensive. However, one thing I am loving is the grass fed organic beef! I eat meat but I try to be wise about it and this is a rare gem!!, (which is reflected in the price). Safe to say I'm really glad Western Market is situated so close to my abode. I'll be spending a portion of each weekend there while in the state and hope that they can expand on their grass fed selection! read more

I moved into Oak Park a few years ago and took too long to wander into this store. It is a bit high end and you won't find cat food here. However what you will find is wonderfully fresh fruits and vegetables. There is also an amazing selection of kombucha and ready made foods. The soup is amazing and they have an array of pre-prepared foods that are reasonably priced. And not everything is pricey- but if you are looking for some amazing ghee it's here. At the meat counter they have "Day old" steaks that are marinated. They do run out if you don't get there early enough (and the meat is good and reasonably priced). Beware of going on Thursday night as they do wine tastings and you may wander out with some great bottles that are recommended by Cameron or Penrod. the only reason I go into this store is because it's close to my house. I've never met a group of people so entitled and rude in my life. I can't figure out if they actually think they are curing cancer (or in this case, covid) or are they really that quick to forget that they are grocery store workers. You'd think by now they would have an effective, common sense, time saving and polite way of dealing with the pandemic. But no, they don't. Rude cashiers, unhelpful staff (when you can even find one), clueless door people and inflated price gouging. The only reason I go into the store is because their meats department is the closest thing to actual meat around town. If this tells you how annoyed I am with that place then you know it's bad but I'd rather shop at the Meijer at 8 and Woodward. and that place is a dump. Get a grip on reality. You sell onions, not solving world hunger. AND you're in Ferndale. read more

I have a love-hate relationship with Western Market. They very often don't have what I need, but they always have something I want. They always have a nice selection of plants in their outdoor garden shop, during growing season.. They also carry art for outdoors. The grocery selection here is varied but small, as is the store itself. That said, everything is always fresh. They have a nice offering of ready to eat foods, including soups, pastries and of course rotisserie chicken. The fresh squeezed orange juice is delicious. You can usually grab a taste of it just as you enter. They usually offer samples throughout the store, including wine if you're lucky. The staff both inside and in the garden area are somewhat aloof, with the occasional friendly face. There is free on-site parking, but like most places in Ferndale, it's very limited. read more

One of my top favorite stores in this area. Gray employees with great attitudes. Great vibes. Super fresh everything. The fish is about the best I have been able to find. Great selection of fresh fish. They always have halibut filets which isn't the most common occurrence at other markets. Friendly staff. The variety of products gives an opportunity to try several different brands and decide what's most fitting your preference. I've been coming to this market since childhood. I cannot give more than 2 stars. It is VERY expensive. OVERPRICED $8.50 for 4 fried chicken legs when weighed. Let me share a story with one of the owners, Steve's brother. They stopped carrying shredded lettuce and I asked him about it. He acted nice and said, I can have that head of lettuce shredded for you. He came back and it was in a container. The sticker said almost $10. He gave me the full weigh price of the salad bar for the whole head of lettuce instead of $1.89 or whatever it was. It has a good deli and very nice staff. For that I will not give 1 star. read more

Nothing wrong with making a profit, but with the pricing continue to drive up, existing customers will opt for larger purchases at places with more value. In the long run, reasonable pricing will yield more profit with more loyal customers. A long time customer who will choose a different option. read more

Can't believe I haven't reviewed this place yet. I find myself here pretty frequently since it's only a mile from my house. The layout is tight because the retail footprint is small, but they've been fairly thoughtful about where to locate everything - with the exception of the reduced fruit/veggie rack, which is at the very back of the store (I like to start there and get as many cheaper things as possible and then work forward, but that doesn't flow well on a busy day). They stock a ton of great fresh juice and kombucha options, pastries, soup, etc. My father-in-law is in love with their hot food line. My wife loves that they stock Avalon bakery products. I'm in love with their meat counter. It's one of the only places I'll buy things like lamb chops. Prices aren't as low as at an Asian mart or halal mart, but the staff is extremely helpful. I've had more than one staff member offer suggestions for how to prepare certain items that I'm not as familiar with. Western also stocks a lot of fair trade and organic products for people who are looking for those types of options. I hope you'll check out one of my fave grocery stores soon! read more

So, the other day I was time-warping in the wine section... (not jumping to the left and stepping to the right; time literally CEASED as I gazed upon the vast selection of bottles with unusual names and enthralling pictures on the labels) ...then the sommelier approached me and with his presence, normal time resumed. As we conversed, I realized why the wine section stopped me in my tracks. He's a friendly fellow who knows his vino and is excited about sharing his knowledge with others. The section is packed with obscure, small production wines from small vineyards. The caveat? You can procure a spectacular bottle of vino here for less than $40. You can also find a pretty damn good wine for under $20. I couldn't leave the store without buying one (even though I already had 4-5 bottles at home). 'Exile in Grapeville' aside, the produce section here is consistently amazing. The oranges they use for their juice are always sweet and tangy. Lots of locally made sweet and salty snacks and baked goods to tempt you on your way out the door. I keep finding more and more to love about this market. read more

I'm a big believer in 'shop local' and I can't more local than shopping at store based in my home town. I like to walk to the market from my home -- kill two birds with one stone: exercise and nutrition. Western Market is a very clean, well stocked fruit and meat market (get your minds out of the gutter, it's not that kind of meat, hehe). The produce is fresh with deliveries daily. The selection ranges from the basics like Gala apples to items like heirloom tomatoes and more. The meat selection is good with a nice variety of steaks, etc... They also have a great prepared food section. My favorite is the roasted winter roots -- If I could only survive on roots... I would be a happy man. The service is excellent.. during the holiday the Manager made sure I received the freshest cut fruit platters by having the Produce Manager prepare the platters while I waited.. It doesn't get better than that for fresh! While not the cheapest place in town (that would be across the street or if you prefer dumpster diving), it is worth a visit. read more

I am so lucky to live so close to such a lovely little market!! I love cooking so I get pretty excited when I visit a store with such nice quality ingredients. The produce is gorgeous and plentiful, the meats look amazing (haven't tried them yet, but if I need some meat this is where I'll buy it). Plenty of nice quality other pantry staples too, like grains, salad dressings, etc. FANTASTIC selection of cheeses!!! The best thing about Western Market, for my buck, is that they are locally-owned so they seem to be local-conscious. If an item is available locally, or organic, or preferably both, they will offer it that way. Wonderful selection of local & organic food. They seem to have a nice selection of wines, the prices for those weren't out of line. They also have some microbrew beers (Michigan beers, of course) that we haven't been able to find in too many places; our favorite Michigan beer is Dark Horse Brewery and they stock it! I haven't tried the deli counter yet but the salads & soups look fresh and wonderful. I will definitely post an update once I get the chance. Only potential drawbacks are: it is a grocery ONLY so you will not be picking up aspirin and hair dye and Ziploc bags like you can at Meijer. It is a little spendy, but for good quality I don't mind. I get overwhelmed and very overstimulated, I love it in there so much that I lose track of time and can never remember what I came in for! read more

I typically stop in Western about once a week. It's great and the people there are super nice. I gotten great wine advice and good suggestions at their prepared foods counter. Western is a little market that I mostly use for convenience when I need to pick up only a few things. I find that it has good produce, but it's usually a little more expensive than Trader Joe's or Westborn. But given it's a few blocks from me, I tend go here for a quick trip instead. They have a good range of produce and other organic items like granola, dried berries and nuts, etc. I also love looking at the flowers and other garden items out front prior to heading in. It's a cute touch! My biggest issue is that it's rarely a quick trip even if I only need a few things. The lines are always long with at least two customers in each line at all times, and sometimes only one or two lanes open during busy hours so there's up to 5 people in line. There's also don't have an express lane, so sometimes I've been stuck in there for an additional 15 minutes while I wait for people with carts full of food. Also, I'm not rating on this, but want to comment that their pre-made mexican dip was my favorite thing. I was going in there once or twice a week to buy it because it's delicious. Until one day I flipped it over to see that there's pork in the refried beans. I should know to check, but as a pescetarian, I was sad to see pig snuck into a seemingly vegetarian dip. read more

I am not one for grocery lists unless I'm planning a party and there is a set menu where I have to remember ingredients. I'd much rather trot right up to Western Market -on foot when I can make due with just a few bags -and peruse the isles of fresh produce to decide what I'd like to make for dinner. I can't say enough about the staff here. They are unbelievably helpful and friendly. Western can't possibly carry everything but they do manage to fit quite an amazing selection into the store. From flowers to prepared foods, grab & go lunch, fresh fare, meats and cheeses to the best wine and beer selection around Ferndale, I don't know what I'd do without this place. It's my pit stop before a barbecue or party for a hostess gift. I've even pondered if I moved out of my current apartment, which is walking distance, that I wouldn't want to stray too far from Western Market. Ahem.. I'm hooked. read more

I'm being generous with three stars after my experience this evening. WHAT I LIKE: There are several prepared items that are great when I'm getting off work late and want a quick bite. And, they do have a fun selection of items. It's truly a 'market' versus the big box grocery stores. TONIGHT: I went to the pre-prepared case to get a couple items. The guy behind the counter had been loading items into a freezer and the girl was scrubbing a pot in the sink. Both looked up after about 3 minutes: The girl wiped her hands (without washing them) and came to help ... The gentleman beat her too me. He picked up my food with his hands and hadn't washed them. :( To me, that's really disgusting. And second to that, the checkout tends to be manned by young kids who aren't particularly friendly. I've found better service and product and cleaner stores in Holiday and Westborn Markets in Royal Oak. read more

I love Western Market for the convenience. The produce seems to be fine for me - and it lasts longer than the crappy produce I get at Meijer. Nice meat / deli counter, great wine selection, and the variety of upscale packaged foods is nice. On everyday packaged things, like Orange Juice and Milk, Western is WAY expensive. $4.69 for a 1/2 gal of Tropicana? You can get a big jug of Tropicana at Meijer for less than that. But for ingredients for a nice meal, nice meats and a good bottle of wine, if you live in Ferndale, Oak Park, or the Palmer Woods area of Detroit, Western is a great spot. I only wish they were open a little later. read more

This is my go to spot. I walk or ride my bike up here almost daily when the weather is warm. The owners and staff are FANTASTIC! I've had the pleasure of teaching a few in my film class and they always say HI and ask how I'm doing. They have a nice selection of produce, deli and prepared food. I like that I can get Great Lakes Coffee here and there's always lots of wine and produced marked down for quick sale. I can't resist a sale even if it is on a dented can of tomatoes. I appreciate Western and how much they contribute to Ferndale. I also like that they keep me from having to go to a huge grocery store. I am a sucker for friendly efficient service and Western market has it in spades. read more

Update: I put it at top because I RAMBLED on and on in my regular review. I went to WM last night and bought some freshly homemade peanut butter. Ingredients? PEANUTS. Absolutely delicious. I had no idea they made their own peanut butter and I don't know how long it has been an option, but that will be the only peanut butter I ever buy. I love what they are doing with some of the fresh options - like freshly squeezed juices but the peanut butter! Wow! I have shopped Western Market for 5 years now, and always for fresh food. This is a local market that has some unique items, but I go for two reasons: fresh fruit and veg, and the meat shop. They also stock a large (for their size) selection of Michigan made, grown, and raised goods. I try to buy fresh food locally and where they have experienced butchers. Standard question - ask for a Chateaubriand. If the butcher (not just counter help but butcher) doesn't know what you are talking about, go elsewhere. Just cutting stuff up and slapping it out for sale is no way to value the animal or your wallet. You want someone with know how. It makes all the difference and it is just about 4 blocks from home, so how can you beat that? They also stock meat from C. Roy meats in Yale. All C. Roy meat is from a less than 100 miles away - and most of it is organic (clearly marked). If you are into local, it's worth it to pay the extra money and get locally "processed" (cleaned up for the squeamish) meat and C. Roy meats is one of only a couple that actually do this in SE Michigan. I wish we had the option same for chicken - which travels more than I do. I read something recently that the average chicken travels 1000 miles before it gets to my fridge. Amazing - and somewhat horrifying all things considered. Love the way the beer and wine section is filling in nicely as well. So, I guess technically, I have 3 reasons that I go there. Prices are a little lower for beer. This store is more about quality and isn't for someone that wants to get absolutely everything on their list in one stop. This is for someone that wants the old market style AND substance. I find it less expensive than Holiday Market (also a favorite) and more so than Meijer or Kroger for sure. But, you get what you pay for and we are talking about food, not sawdust. Where food is concerned, I would rather spend my money here and know where my food has been. I still make the trek to the Meijer or Kroger once every couple weeks for other stuff, but for meat, produce, and now beer/wine - I shop at Western Market. UPDATE: Got a couple of steaks there this past weekend and some sausage. WOW. I had forgotten that there is such a different flavor to the meat. My porterhouse (personally, I think a good porterhouse is as good as it gets) just tasted different. Different like "vine ripened tomatoes" purchased in July vs tomatoes purchased in February different. You just can't beat fresh food and this meat is about as fresh as we can get. The sausage is awesome. I mean it - if you like sausage at all, you have to try the sausage (in the little freezer by the cheese section). Just excellent. I think Western Market is one of the better Gourmet Fruit and Vegatable Markets in the area!! I love the easy get in and get out because I can always find what I am looking for. Freshest produce around, brought in daily. The owners also work with several area farmers for the local Michigan products. Beautiful Meat and seafood counter and a wonderful deli. The owners are friendly and I always make me feel like family with that "Cheers" attitude "Where everyone knows your name" when I shop there. They are also very involved with the community. In the Springtime they have one of the widest selection of plants available, brought in daily. And what can I say about the Wine selection, they were named Metro Times for best wine selection. I shop here at least once a week but in my experience my complaints are as follows: The staff has almost zero product knowledge as far as what they do and do not carry. Also the prepared food is good and convenient but the staff behind the counter never know the best way to reheat it! I even asked if ANYONE in the store knew the best way to reheat some expensive crab cakes and the girl told me no. I've also just been told simply "we don't make it here." The only friendly people I've come across are the people behind the deli/meat counter. The cashiers do not want to chat with you or be bothered with questions. Expensive! Their stuff is good quality but I always spend $60 or more, even when I go in to buy ingredients for one meal (for 2 people). Honestly I could look past the fact that it's expensive if the staff had better product knowledge and had better customer service. read more

The city planner departments of so many cities have decreed that their ideal appearance is one identical strip mall after another, anchored by a ubiquitous chain. Their typical to do list includes 'woo chain,' 'meet quota for Meijer/Dominicks/Jewel/Albertsons' and 'conform to uniformity.' Really, I'm sure it says exactly that. Detroit, you can do so much better with the resources at hand and the wonderful farmers, agricultural suppliers, and ethnic communities. Sometimes these rare elements come together, and when they do, that awful aftertaste of another mega-box-bland chain washes away. Usually it comes at the expense of coins and dollars falling out of my wallet at an alarming rate, however, so I always feel a twinge of regret that these wonderful assets frequently have a much higher price point than Spartjers and the rest. Western Market fills the niche of locally-focused grocer, and what an asset for the Ferndale region. The fresh fruits and veggies in the produce section made a convert out of me, though I have to be picky and choosy while waiting on specials to avoid blowing up my grocery budget. They focus on Michigan-grown or Midwestern produce, which I appreciate. Nothing is worse than flavourless fruits ripened on a truck from California or Chile, especially when they look so pretty and appealing. Prices are correspondingly dear sometimes, though, so pay attention. The cheese and meat cases have a number of great options for a good dinner, and the staff are spot on with recommendations, pairings, or cooking suggestions. Uncertain about how to prepare that roast you just bought? Ask fearlessly; their knowledge is a wonderful asset for shoppers, and they dispense ideas and suggestions so freely and friendly-ly (totally a word). Complemented by Trader Joe's and local cheesemongers, you can put together a spectacular wine-and-cheese or gift basket without any effort at all. I reserve adoration for the wine selection. The sommelier here is a local icon, but an assistant helped me on my last visit. An hour after gabbing about French and sweet wines, the best in a few categories, and things I could not/should not/must not miss, I walked away endowed with new wisdom and a deep appreciation for how much education is at my fingertips when I need it. read more

Since moving back to Ferndale Western Market is our go-to place to almost everything we make at home. They may not be as big as a place like Holiday Market and have the same diversity of cheese, baked goods, and prepared foods, but they're around the corner and almost always have what I need. A highlight of this market is their meat section. When I found out that they had locally grown beef I was ecstatic. You can definitely taste the difference and it's worth the extra $1 +/- per pound. The rest of the store is pretty standard. They have a well maintained produce section, a decent bread selection, a small prepared foods area, and a small cheese cooler. Their wine and beer features a lot of smaller companies and local Michigan brewers, which is great. Outside in the summer months they have a nicely sized garden center. I bought all of my tomato and cuke plants there this spring and they're now giving me lots of fresh produce. A place like Western Market keeps Ferndale feeling comfortable and local and the employees always greet you with a smile. Support them! read more

I like Western Market! I don't do all my grocery shopping here but I do go here often for the special things. The beer selection is great as is the wine section. What I like is there is a giant rack of single bottles of beer so you can grab a few brews you've been meaning to try without committing to a whole 6 pack. The wine guy is fantastic, he was so helpful to me a few weeks ago when buying a winesent (a wine present?). They sell tons of local products here which is always a plus in my book. The prepared foods and fresh squeezed tangerine juice are both wonderful. Seriously, skip the plain ole orange and go for the tangerine...so good. read more

The only thing stopping me from giving this place five stars, is the fact that I wanted some Kleenex when I just went there, but they don't have anything but food. For food, though, Western Market is amazing. They have great produce, a great meat counter, great cheese cooler, huge wine selection, and a nice prepared foods counter (pasta salad, falafel, lasagna, stuff like that). And they have this great cooler with all the fancy schmancy juice -- Pom, Odwalla, etc. They have a nice plant and flower selection in the warm months, too. My favorite is the chicken noodle soup (they also have a soup of the day and Cheli's Chili). The broth is so yellow and chicken-y, the noodles are so thick and starchy, and the chunks of chicken are big, thick shreds, not little rubbery cubes. It is the perfect cure for: heartbreak, stress, a cold winter day, a sore throat, and, of course, pure hunger. It IS a little pricey, though. The aforementioned soup is $2.99 for a small bowl, $3.99 for a slightly bigger one. Boursin cheese is like six bucks. Produce is at the high end. But, overall, it's worth it. So, to sum up, if you want food -- good, fresh, top-quality whole foods -- Western Market is a comparable (if smaller) alternative to Westborn or Holiday. But, if you need Swiffer Wet Jet pads, cough medicine, tampons, Kleenex -- hell, even certain cereals, crackers and cookies -- go to Kroger. read more

I'm giving Western a low review so maybe they will finally listen to my requests for products. I'd like to quit driving up to Westborn, Trader Joes, and Holiday for these things I need. 1. Grazing Fields farm fresh eggs - from a coop in Charlotte, MI. Right now they only carry conventional eggs and Eggland's best, which I will settle for in a pinch. Real eggs taste better and have less fat and cholesterol and more beta carotene & essential nutrients 2. Calder Dairy products - particularly the large glass jugs of natural milk (the best milk ever in the safest packaging that is constantly reused, who loses?), butter, half & half in the glass, and sour cream (again the best sour cream ever) 3. Organic potatoes - Check the EWG's "Dirty Dozen" for most polluted produce items. Basically tells you which things you really need to buy organic. It would be great if they had all 12 items available organic but it's potatoes I eat most. One thing Western does have is the LOCAL, NATURAL BEEF!!!!! Making Western the only place I buy meat besides from John Henry. It tastes so much better than other beef, I can't even eat regular anymore. Love the loose mushrooms too. read more

Every time I'm in town, I make sure to swing by and stock up on my favorite Michigan products to schlep back to NYC with me! Buying a $40 bottle of craft Pinot Noir is no risk, right? Wrong! I was very disappointed with my selection and with a lot of hesitation, I returned it. The wine guy greeted me graciously and took me to his office. He set down two glasses and together we tasted my bottle and shared small talk about wines. After listening to my likes, he recommend two $20 bottles of Cabernet in exchange which I've since enjoyed. My hat is off to the wine guy and his customer service.
