I really enjoy shopping at Westlake! It is a scense of discovery walking down the aisles. They have so many extra things that spark the imagination. - Very friendly and knowledgeable staff. I never feel rushed or brushed-off by the employees. - Many small items can be purchased in single units (just need 3 metric brass screws... and not a 12 pack? Then go here). - The selection of unique items boggles my mind, especially when the store is half the size of the big-box hardware). - Key making done right! When I've had keys made at this store, well... they work! That's not the case when I go to the big-box stores. I'm not sure what it is, but the worker seems to give the key a little more time and effort. - In the summer, the turn over part of the parking lot to plants, lawn and garden, and outdoor supplies. - They don't carry any large hardware items in the store (can't buy 5 sheets of 8' plywood). - Good selection of manual and power tools. read more

these people are horribly rude. i came in to get some litter for my cats but had trouble finding the pelletized sawdust bedding. i walked up to the desk and overheard an inappropriate comment from a tall bald man about wanting to receive a security "pat down" from a woman... ew dude. you're at work. when they finish their super important work conversation, the old white woman calls me to the register. exasperated, she asks me "what can i do for you?" ok sorry for being here... i told her what i was here to buy and that i couldn't find it, she sends me to the wrong aisle as her and her coworkers snicker. i call my partner who has bought bedding here before. they told me to just leave and go to PetSmart. now i know. avoid this place if you're a woman or black or queer or anything other than a cis white guy... i bought nothing. read more

Worst experience ever. They have a deal to get $50 gift card and get $10 free. Was there for 20 minutes manager and 2 cashiers were not able to figure out how to sell a gift card. Told me to come back tomorrow. Will never ever come back terrible experience. On top of this I asked to get some electrical wore cutters and the manager helped in getting them and started ranting about how people steal and no one does anything able this. There are over 80 Westlake Ace's in the midwest and until 2006, they were still owned by the Westlake family. Today the Westlake Ace stores are owned by a larger company but still carry that quaint smalltown feel - I'm not sure if that's an accident or intentional but they are not Lowe's or even Sutherland's (if you're up on your home improvement taxonomy). Their are still Westlake family members around Kansas City, they are pretty good people and still play a role in the stores. Westlake Ace's aren't technically home improvement stores, they're hardware stores and as close as I can tell, the main difference is that Westlake Ace doesn't carry building supplies. Generally, if it's too large to fit in the back of your station wagon, Westlake Ace doesn't carry it (except for grills and stuff - but you get the point). This particular Westlake Ace is near my Mom's house so maybe it's the nostalgia but I really like this store. Besides the big building supplies, they've always had what I needed and often enough of a variety to give options but not so much to be overwhelming. I can see how this would be a great choice for mom and pop trying to fix something around the house. The staff have always been down to earth and friendly. It seems like most of the people that work there are older, there aren't any bratty 17 year olds biding their time until there big break at Home Depot. Everyone I've run into has been sincere, kind and helpful. They also have a rewards program of some sort. Apparently I enrolled in that at some point but have no idea what it entitles me to. Generally these are 3% back but since they don't have building supplies, it would take a lot of toilet seats and bolts to rack up enough to get a decent credit. But that doesn't matter really because if what you need is at Westlake Ace (and unless you need building supplies, it probably is), and it's closer than one of those other places, you should go to Westlake Ace. read more

I didn't give only 1 star because they sell the city recycling bins and I appreciate that. .......... So I needed to get a key copied. For contrast let me tell you how the operation worked at Lowe's. I go up to the guy and give him my original key. He grabs a blank in about .2 seconds and then sticks the original and blank into a machine. He presses a button and then I have a nice copy made moments later. Pretty snappy. Here's how it worked at this store. I notice that another customer is getting a key made. For some reason it is taking a while and I realize why. They have some ancient key cutting machine where the operator manually slides the key onto the cutting wheel. When it became my turn to get my key cut the dude has to look up in a book to see which blank to grab. I can clearly see which blank is appropriate, no thumbing through a book necessary. When he gets done manually cutting out my key he hands it to me and says "Sometimes these Toyota keys don't take to well." "That's grand" I think silently. Then he asks if my car was here. Again, not a good sign. Unfortunately I rode with a friend so I could not test out the key. Then I pay for the key and the cashier tells me, "Make sure you keep the receipt in case it doesn't work." "Hmmm, maybe this has happened several times before", I think. Removing the key from the envelope was not awesome either. I pull out the key and there are obvious inconsistencies between the two keys. When testing out the key on my car as I figured the key didn't go completely into the lock. The whole situation was too humorous to be upset about, but I did lose a little faith in the outside world. Don't go there to get a key made. Do go there to buy recycle bins. read more

This has been my store forever. The hub used to always push for the big stores, more selection and cheaper he said. I preferred the smaller store where I could always get some help, little friendly conversation. If it cost a little more it was always worth it to me. Till today. Been a gal working there also forever, elvira-esque. Actually she's been there 11 years, as she informed me yesterday. I needed some help finding a product I'd seen in one of their fliers. She was not familiar with, got defensive and rather than offering any sort of help, she told me of her long employment there. Um customer service 101, nope. Then as I wandered away, she called mgr., who hunted me down, approached me with an attitude, and when I asked him about product, he said nope, maybe you saw it somewhere else. Westlake does carry a sizeable inventory of products, but my gosh they really "break it off in people" when it comes to their prices. Westlakes prices are about double that of everyone else! I always shop at Menards, Lowe's or Home Depot first, as I can't afford to blow my money at Westlake. read more
