The East is pretty fashionable. The West? Over. It's so yesterday. This market proves it. It honestly doesn't surprise me to see independent little grocery stores like this thriving in Northern Virginia. It's a very liberal and socially conscious part of the world - even though it can be oppressive in terms of traffic, and not being the friendliest place on Earth. So I'm a big supporter of this place even though the prices are not dirt cheap. They sell some pretty good stuff and I would certainly shop here if I lived in Arlington. read more

This is a very nice neighborhood market, very nice, but small. They have some interesting food items here, and a heck of a lot of craft beers from around the world to choose from! One thing that would make this place even better is if they would seriously consider adding some South African beers to their collection, because I never see any around, and South Africa does have a great craft beer scene... and I know where to find at least one kind of South African beer (which was a difficult task for me). It had been two years since I was last at Westover Market Beer Garden. Previously I worked nearby and it was a general stop after work for dinner and a pint. But with not living in the area, and of course Covid, it has been more problematic to stop in. Not much had changed. They still had an awesome beer selection and amazingly fresh meat for their burgers and sandwiches (from their Market Butcher). One trip to this small independent, family owned shop and you'll be transported to exotic locales beyond your wildest desires...at least in liquid format. The friendly and knowledgeable staff are your personal travel agents to the fun and exciting land of barley and hops. After a visit to the wall of beer, you can relax in their outdoor beer garden which has a laid-back Brooklyn vibe. You can grab a bulgogi sub (courtesy of the manager's mother), catch some rays and just kick back with a nice cold brew. It truly is a neighbor hood gathering spot and they take make an effort to make you want to spend your weekend afternoons just lounging here with their mister fans in the summer and heaters in the winter. You probably won't be able to find the new chocolate dipped, triple stuffed Oreos here but you may stumble across some new and interesting finds such as pomegranate hibiscus ginger ale or Hello Kitty gummy snacks from Japan. Like a Beer Virgin I made it through the brew wilderness. Somehow I made it threw. I didn't know how lost I was until I found you. Now I have lived in both Falls Church and Arlington for 11 years and have passed this place countless times. I wondered into this little store on Friday and made a return appearance the next day. I felt like I hit the mother load immediately upon entering the store. There is certainly a beer for even for the most discriminating beer enthusiast. Now the Biergarten is a unique addition to Arlington and I enthusiastically welcome it's appearance. The Biergarten defiantly adds European flavor with American camaraderie reminiscent of the backyard BBQs of the Mad Men era. The patrons were certainly an eclectic potpourri of families, couples, 20-60's, urbanities, suburbanities, gay, straight, male, female...just happy beer buddies sharing a love of beer. There was just good energy flowing from something other than a beer keg. The beer was phenomenal. Taste tested the Apricot beer but decided on the Pear Cider which put me into a more spring-like mood. It was sweet and easy to drink. As of Mid-March the petition is still open for those wishing to reinstate the live music. Why should you go? It's a great place for those of us who enjoy a side of conversation with good beer. read more

Wow, I had no idea this nice little area existed! I'm a fan of the brick walkways in the neighborhood. NOT a fan of the large tree blocking "Westover Mar-". You can figure it out, though (hopefully). Thought it was going to be larger based on the pictures and reviews. I would describe it as a cute little grocery store that is *extremely* sufficient. I like that you can get a meal from the deli, just do some grocery shopping, or pick up some wine/sake (pretty good size selection)....or the infamous BEER WALL. I'm not a big beer person, but it was definitely impressive, i must say! I liked the random Asian gummy candies at the checkout counter, and the RIDIC selection of salsa. haha and the cute Asian lady at the checkout counter, too. People who know me know that I'm a very harsh judge of Asians, but she was A-OK in my book! read more

I swear I reviewed this place before. I used to live down the street from here and it was pretty nice to have it walking distance. It's definitely an anchor in the Westover Hood. There is a huge beer selection here, and you can get some Korean staples here such as kim chi, or la style short ribs (since the mom that runs the joint is Korean). I got a sandwich from the deli and a couple delerium brews for lunch once. The sandwich wasn't bad, but it wasn't great. I have to give this place 4 stars since it's hard to still find small mom and pop stores like this that provide such a need for the community anymore. Not sure why anyone would shop at this market. Have tried a few times to stop in and pick something up because I like to support local businesses. But I never find anything I need. Not even basics. And it is dirty and poorly lit, with some shelves half empty. And the milk case has plastic sheeting hanging from the top of the case billowing out with a fan going in front of the case? If the Great Wall of Beer got any bigger, I think astronauts would be able to see it from space. "Wall" is actually a bit of a misnomer at this point, because there's so much beer that bottles and six packs line two additional walls and are getting ready to make a blitzkrieg toward the registers :) To think that after that happens, they'll have to stack six packs of beer on top of one another. The Beeramid *drools* It's nearly impossible to write a review of Westover Market and *not* discuss their beer selection. You'll go in for a six pack and chances are that you'll walk out with several. I will say that it's good to have one or two backup selections in mind because sometimes what they had in stock one week will be gone the next. But there's definitely no excuse to go home empty handed, and I've found some really good regional beers from breweries I never knew about (St. George Brewing Company in VA and 16 Mile Brewing Company in DE). And it seems that just about every style of Bell's is on offer. The selection of domestics can't be beat, and the selection of imports are really good too. It's truly a horn of plenty! I haven't had a chance to stop by the butcher--an external vendor who is only on site for a few days each week--but they also have a small selection of shrinkwrapped meats next to the butcher counter. I don't know if they're from the same butcher (I'd assume so), but in any event I have to say the ribeyes I've picked up have frankly been better than the ones I've gotten at Whole Foods, and cheaper too. The verdict: I don't think you could do all your grocery shopping here, but they carry all your basic staples, and I have to say that the staff is always pleasant. Westover Market feels like the typical bodega or corner store I'd love to have right next door to me. But with all that beer, maybe it's a good thing that I have to trek out there after all. It's not accessible by Metrorail, but if you catch the 2-series of buses at Ballston, it's a whopping 5 minute trip from that point. read more

I've been here once for a sandwich to go and that was some of the worst customer service ever. There were so many things that went wrong, and no steps to correct it by the employees there at that time. I also think the health department should take a look in the kitchen area and food prep. (I got sick soon after eating as well) The market itself might be fine for the beer selection and what not, but it can not make up for the service or cleanliness. Went here for the first time last night. don't need to go again...ever. which is saying something because they've got the outdoor thing going on. FOOD: mediocre at best. BEER: they only have about 10 to choose from on tap. i appreciate that they rotate and it is an ecclectic mix. but, such a small selection. hardly a beer garden. SERVICE: poor. the wait staff were aloof and not very helpful. you have to get up and go inside to get your own beer and order your food, they don't wait on you outside. GREEN: fail! they only use plastic cups (a fresh one for each beer) and plastic utensils. wasteful! AND: when i asked for a side of mayo to go with my burger - i was told they don't serve mayo on the patio. what?!? nothing special. won't go back. the food across the street at Lost Dog is FAR better. read more

Westover Market is much more than, well, a market. It's a beer institution around these parts. Their beer selection is worldy as it is independently minded. They (sort of recently) have added a beergarden which is great for crisp cool fall days and are now serving food! The real reason you might want to visit Westover is for the beer selection. The Wall of Beer, that is-- you have to see it to believe it. End to end of beery goodness, Westover is a purveyor of the stock mass produced beers (ew) but more importantly, a veritable variety of craft beers from around the country (and beyond!). They sometimes have in-store demos from different breweries so you can try before you buy. read more

I feel a need to update because I have been back many times since writing the first review and some improvements have been made. First improvement: the bathrooms. You used to have to walk downstairs to go and the the bathroom was dank and cold. Now they have nice new bathrooms right next to the biergarten! Second: restaurant! They now have a sit-down bar area inside with a short but unusual menu (standard bar items, but also bulgogi and some interesting meat options) and with a bunch of unique beers on tap. They have a pretty good deal for beer flights. We go here to sit on the patio and relax or enjoy some beers from the bar inside. And of course, to shop the beers in the market! I love this place and can't wait for warmer weather when sitting on the patio is a little more pleasant. It is just awsome all around. read more

This is a review for the butcher shop at westover. The beer garden and beer selection inside the market are amazing. The butcher shop is nearly barren, with a few cuts of chicken, pork, and whole ducks. There was a beautiful roseda farms brisket and a single prime rib. When the butcher, whom I had the temerity to request, came out, he was haughty and so completely unhelpful, I couldn't determine if he was inept out just a jerk. I spend a good amount at the organic butcher of McLean, but was looking for something closer. These guys will not be getting my business in spite of their exotic ipa's. Each time I go to this local treasure, I fall deeper and deeper in love. My romance is getting expensive however, as each time I go the beer selection seems to creep larger and larger, which requires me to purchase the new options. The staff here is top notch, they know their products and are very helpful, it really is the kind of place where they know your name. The BBQ on Saturday's which I believe varies from time to time, is generally fantastic! The monthly beer tastings are awesome, low pressure, just good beer, explained in plain English by regular people. I can't wait till the beer garden opens up, it is one of the best assets the neighborhood has! This place is the perfect alternative to the pricey beer bars with a great selection. Its hard to not like a place like this. HUGE beer selection. Some produce, some snackerdoodles, and frozen food and such. The butcher has some gorgeous meat, that is locally sourced and humanely dispatched. They have a prepared foods section which is pretty tasty and a kitchen where Chef Jay is cookin some really tasty stuff. NOW TO THE IMPORTANT PART. The Beer in the bar and outside is really great. Rotating eclectic mix of really good beer. The least interesting thing I've seen on tap was Guiness, but its rare to see something that pedestrian on tap. Usually its a mix of IPAs, a stout some interesting Ales and usually a cider of some sort. The outside is very comfy to hang out and grab a beer, during the day and evening its mobbed with mom dad and their kids which is pretty cool, but later on it settles into a fun crowd of people. High: great beer selection. Your best bet here is to buy the beer and take it home. Lows: The bar and grill is pretty much a dive. There's no table service, and the food is a touch below average. We had cheese steaks and nachos. The cheese steaks were bland, and the nachos were a bit soggy. No silverware was offered. Water is self-service from the drinking fountain. The heavy metal music playing in the bar is not my style. Clearly this bar is not for people like me. We probably won't be back to the bar/restaurant. It's a shame; the location is good, and there are plenty of people in the surrounding neighborhood that would enjoy A good brewpub with quality food and service. read more

Stick to the beer (and wine - they have an okay selection of that too). The beer selection is reasonable, but a large proportion of it is American so-called IPAs (please; they don't resemble IPA. They're APAs), so that's a good proportion of their selection that's not worth bothering about. The European and Asian selection is very patchy indeed. However, the reason the beer is the only reason to shop at Westover Market is that everything from the refrigerator sections is poorly stored and likely to make you sick. I've made the mistake of buying milks from there twice, and both times it poured from the bottle - the same day as purchase - in chunks. I got salmonella poisoning from hummus bought there. I mentioned this to a local friend, and apparently this problem is widely known by locals. A shame, because I really liked the idea of the butcher when I moved here, but I'm scared to buy meat from that place. read more

One of the best selections of Beer in the Arlington area! Free beer and wine tastings on Sundays! This is one of the few independent grocery stores left in NOVA and it has a "family-run feel". The selection of groceries and prices is adequate. In addition to the beer wall it has a make-to-order sandwich area that is great. Outside of the grocery store is a patio area. On Sunday afternoons in the summer there is a pulled-pork BBQ vendor that partners with the store. On a few occasions there is even a band and it seems like the whole neighborhood is hanging out at the store. read more

I can't believe how many times I've been at one of the restaurants across the street and never come in here. This is just the neighborhood type of place that I love. A combination butcher shop, "weird" beer emporium, deli, and neighborhood market - Westover Market is marvelous. When I say "weird" beer - sure you can get your mega brewer suds here, but when 2 of the 4 walls are full of unusual bottles from all over the world why would you ever want to. I'm not even a beer fan and I was seriously impressed with the selection. Way to many choices to count. When you get to wall 3 the beer ends and the cheese and meet stop. A caraway gouda caught my eye as did some fresh made bratwurst. The meat case was filled with so many beautiful cuts. I also picked up a couple locally made crab soups. While the soups are a regular feature in the freezer section, the company that makes them had a small table set up near the entrance for tastings and I just couldn't resist. The deli in the back doubles as a kitchen for the small attached bar and outside bier garden (which features live music and plenty of TVs to cheer on your favorite team). I'll be back to check out both those options as well as partake of some of the hot entrees and sides you can get to go in the market. Sure you can pick up some regular groceries here - but the real reasons to come is the butcher shop, beer selection and the locally produced items. read more

You know where most grocery stores or markets would stock produce and dairy items; well Westover Market stocks those areas (the perimeter of the store) with beer. While they so sell the standard mass-produced beer from the big companies, they primarily focus on craft beer. Going through the shelves and picking out selections that you have never heard of is exciting and time-consuming. The back of the market houses a bar and the outside features a patio that is the neighborhood "bier garden". When sitting on the patio you will want to order at either the inside bar or the outside bar (if it is set up and staffed). You can order at either bar regardless of which you open your tab with which is a nice little feature. The outside patio has two TVs which always play whatever major sporting event is on, and on some weekend nights has live music. Prices for beer is on the high side ($9+...the ones I always seem to order tend to be $11), but wine is normally priced at $7-8 per glass. Honestly the wine is the best deal since if you get the right bartender, you will be getting a heavy pour. Honestly we never seem to be able to leave with a bill less than $70, but at least what we are getting is so good! All the service is friendly since they know that almost everyone there lives in the neighborhood and are regulars. It is not unusually to see families with kids on the outside patio both during the day and in the early evening. Since it's a neighborhood hangout, it's family friendly. Trust me, if I ever decide to have kids, I see my husband and I bring our kids there while we enjoy a drink or two with friends. Having a place like Westover Market around the corner from us, along with local establishments such as Lost Dog and Stray Cat across the street, are what make us love our neighborhood so much. read more

This market is a neighborhood market that has plenty of eclectic items and is attached to its own biergarten. The three walks of the store are covered in beer, leaving a huge variety for anyone fancying some suds. The deli in the back has a solid selection of foods for the day, to include hot dishes being served if you're at the restaurant. Surprisingly, it even has some kimchi and bulgogi, one of their menu items for next door. You'll pay mom and pop prices so be prepared. They also carry meats from Polygace Farms, which was a huge but pleasant surprise. read more

If you're a beer head like me and you live within a reasonable driving distance then you HAVE to stop by this place. You'd never know it existed either unless someone told you about it. So, I'm telling ya! It looks like someone tried to start up a grocery store, started drinking beer, and wound up unloading more beer onto the shelves instead of meats. It's kind of interesting looking at these cold shelving units that normally would hold things like bologna or pork tenderloins and instead they're holding some of the most unique and random beers from around the world that you could imagine. Not only do they have a great beer selection, but they have a little bar in there and a little patio area with a beer garden of sorts. During the winter they'll throw some logs on a few fire pits, turn on their outdoor flat screens, and have NFL parties on Sundays. They're great people, they love talking about beer, they have great suggestions, they'll order stuff personally for you if they can get it, and they're just guys you want to go hang out with and drink some brews. read more

As a grocery store it's OK. If you like beer or cider you'll be literally in Paradise. I've been late for parties because I get sucked into their overwhelming selection of stuff. It truly is a Great Wall of Beer. They have a pretty nice produce section. Other staples are limited and sometimes lacking. Some things on the shelf are dusty. I would recommend using this grocery store as a complement to the Harris Teeter in Lee Harrison Plaza. The beer garden seems to increasingly be their focus and it has grown in leaps and bounds in the past couple of years to include fire pits and flat screen TVs. I live within walking distance of this grocery store, however I rarely buy groceries there. That's mainly because the groceries are not at all the reason to go here - the reason is THE WALL OF BEER! Everyone I've taken in this place is completely amazed at the beer selection. The entire back wall of the place is a beer cooler. They have at least as good a selection, if not better, than Lost Dog across the street, and they have all of it cold, unlike Lost Dog! The prices are good also. Wine selection is meh, as someone mentioned they often have beer and wine tasting events, which are very cool. They bring in live music for some of these events - I've been inside when they had a dixieland band playing, I've walked by when they were having a mini-block party outside with beer vendors. They do these events weekly, if I'm not mistaken. Grocery-wise, its a small step above your typical bodega. They have a small selection of just about everything basic, but if you're looking for any sort of high-end or specialty item, you're not going to find it here. It's a good place to stop by if you need one or two things for dinner, but I can't see doing all my shopping here. The meat and dairy section looks a little questionable to me. They have a deli and I've gotten acceptable sandwiches for lunch here before, but they were not anything special. All the staff is super friendly, and they do have lots of different discounts. For every $100 you spend, you get $10 off. I know they give a good senior discount as well. All in all I love supporting this local business. read more

My review of this store is long overdue. I've been sampling beers from the Wall of Beers for a few years now. Selection is simply insane. Prices are very good too - no gouging like in some upscale "gourmet" stores that carry microbrews. The item that sent this place over the top was the opening of their beergarden last year. The owners jumped through hoops to get the necessary permits/permissions/etc., and we now have a great European-style outdoor patio in which to enjoy beer, food, and live music. They have taps outside, but they generally don't pour anything super-special. But you can just grab a sixer (or a large-format bottle) from inside and bring it out with you. You can also order food from the deli counter and bring it out. Note I said "European-style" patio, which means tables are shared. So if you're a typical Arlington/DC resident whose first instinct is to give the "DC stinkeye" to anyone who acknowledges you, you're going to have to get over yourself and prepare for the possibility that you might have to make a little smalltalk. Great addition not just to Westover, but to the greater Arlington/Falls Church area in general. read more

Good selection of a lot of random stuff. Reminds me of the Euro Mart on Clarendon Blvd, except a lot bigger and more selection. The wine selection, however, was very small. While we were there, there was a beer and wine tasting, as well as some interesting looking meatballs (that i didnt try). Crowd was decent enough. The vendors doing the tastings were just kind of doling it out, however, no real rhyme or reason. My main attraction to the place is the hard to find selection of cheeses, icecreams, beer, and a bunch of different chips. But since I don't live way out on Washington Blvd., I probably won't stumble upon this place again. read more

Went here while in town recently after seeing a listing for "600 beers" in a local nightflife magazine. My schedule opened up, I took a little drive and pulled up. Upon entering. . . WOW. Beer mecca I must say. Great prices, amazing microbrew selection - Bell's, Kona, Prohibition, Great Divide, River Horse, Allagash, Lagunitas, Brookyln . . . a who's who of good smaller brewers across the nation. Solid Belgian and other unknown international options as well. Reasonable prices too I'll say. The only reason it doesn't get 5 stars is that it's 250 miles from where I live, sorry! read more

I wish I lived closer to Westover Market, but sadly I'm all the way near DC. This is a cool little grocery amongst the standard corporate chains like Safeway and Harris Teeter and a place I'd visit more frequently if I lived in Ballston/Falls Church. This place has much cleaner and almost has a Wegman-like feel to it (not by size, but by selection). Beer options are outta this world. That's really all that needs to be said... I'm sold. My only beef with this place is the parking... nothing they can really do about it, but it's a stress factor when making a trip over to this general area. PS - go across the street to Lost Dog Cafe for some fantastic pizza! read more
