    The lobby.

I really wish there were more hotels in the world like The Westport. Immediately when I stepped into the lobby I fell in love with this place. I am so glad we passed on Mendocino and stayed here instead. Granted, there are more stores and shops in Mendocino but there's nothing close to this elegance and class in any hotel there. I was struck by the attention to detail in the decorating from the paintings that were from a personal friend of the owner to the beautiful fresh flowers welcoming you into all the corners of each room. Martin, our host was professional yet personable. After our delicious omlets in the morning I was so sad to leave. It was such a magical, quaint place. I hope to return someday.

It was Sunday around noon, the day before Labor Day. We're planning on traveling up north Monday for our anniversary trip, so why not leave one day early? Yeah right, and where are you ever going to find a hotel with vacancy at this last minute? Tim finds Westport Hotel's web page and it looks wonderful. No TVs or phones! A real getaway. But the reservation scheduler on the website says they have nothing available for tonight. But ever persistent he decides to call and Dorine tells us they do have a room available! And it's the one we can afford! So we reserve it and tell Dorine we'll be there in 5-6 hours. When we arrive Dorine is at the desk and quickly gets us checked in. She then takes us through a little tour of the place. Sometimes bed & breakfasts are so over-decorated and flowery that it is unpleasant. Westport Hotel is completely the opposite of this. It is beautifully decorated with interesting art and a nice selection of antiques that aren't too heavy. I guess light would be the word I'd use to describe it. We were in room 3 (called the Lost Coast room on the website), with a window which has a view of the ocean (not straight on but from the side of the building). The bed was very comfortable. The shower was huge. The whole room was very clean. In the morning we awoke to a nice tray of scones, tea and coffee at our door. Then later we went down for breakfast and had a nice meal of strada and fruit. The coffee is very good and I was told its a local roast. I couldn't pick up the wifi on my tablet in the room, but it was very strong downstairs in the dining/parlor area. There were a random assortment of books upstairs and I managed to finish one while we were there. Overall we loved our stay and will definitely come again if the opportunity arises.

What a lovely pub. Yes it's a hotel too but this is for the pub. Little did I know this place was opened. I drive by it once a week and it seemed abandoned like the building next to it. Anyway this is a super historic place (the building next to it has old history but it really really is abandoned) so the pub is open year round. In the winter it's open 3 days a week. I discovered they do a high tea EVERY SATURDAY. Wow one of the ONLY places on the coast of Mendocino to do so. I took hubby and to tea we went. They serve local tea from Mendocino. They bake their scones right on the premises. Their scones are amazing. The high tea, reasonable. You always think there isn't enough food with high tea but we had plenty. We did order another scone. Glad we did we had a different flavor then the one we received with the tea service. There were about 27 folks enjoying the view and the ambience and the food. Amy,Tabitha and Sierra were super helpful and attentive. Oh loved the pubmosphere. The refinished Redwood bar and the variety of beer and local wines was nice. A place to return to for dinner as we perused the menu and said yep we will be back. Oh to explore local turf is amazing! Remember Westport is like going nowhere but has exactly what you need. Local charm!!!

We recently married in August 2025 and we wanted to get out of Los Angeles and see the Redwoods for our honeymoon. We were looking for quiet, peace, and nature. We found a small piece of heaven, a glimpse into the garden of Eden or at least the ranch in heaven! THE ROOM: We stayed for 4 nights and had the most relaxing time together. Let me start with the room. My husband called and emailed as he was able to see pictures of the rooms to help make a decision. We chose the Captains Quarters and it served us perfectly. We had access to the jacuzzi, a very private room, and the most serene view. The inn was so well kept and the attention to detail was very much appreciated. I pray it stays like this and they keep investing in the upkeep as it was well maintained and we loved the craftsmanship. We loved the decor of the room. I didn't even think twice about a tv. There is no need for television with a view of paradise through the window. THE PEOPLE: We were so blessed to have Colby hosting us at dinner time each evening. He went above and beyond to help us have privacy as we dined each night at a newly married couple. He worked very hard and was exceptionally good and professional at his job. He kept the fireplace going each night for us, talked with us when we engaged conversation, was polite, respectfully, and made us feel very comfortable. He recommended and made great drinks, and helped us with some exploration tips around the area. We made it to the Avenue of the Giants, the tide pools, Mendocino, and a few other local places like Fort Bragg and the Skunk Train. Colby made us feel at home on the ranch. Clancy gave us an amazing UTV tour. His knowledge of the rich history of the area and deep passion for what he does made the trip all the more special. He showed us great sights and if we had more time, we would have definitely done the picnic next time. What he does on the trails to maintain and create them is incredible. What a job to maintain the land. Also, I loved being able to meet and pet his dog! THE FOOD: This is where I was blown away. I thought we were coming for the view, but had no idea the food would be just as stunning. Chef Nick Wells, you are a culinary genius. We were so grateful to have the opportunity to meet and speak with Chef Nick. He, too, was familiar with the surrounding Los Angeles area and so it was great to connect and to share our appreciation and admiration for his talent and creativity. He was so down to earth and friendly. The food was next level. We did both the ranch supper and tasting menu. We originally only had one dinner planned, but after tasting supper we canceled all other dinner reservations and made sure to come back each night for the food. Literally, we reworked our plans to come back and taste what creation he had planned for the evening. It was one of the highlights of the honeymoon and it really gave us a chance to connect as a couple. Side note, we fell in love with the bacon each morning- just incredible. I woke up looking forward to what feast awaited us at breakfast! What a treat and a great way to start our day each morning with a hearty feast. THE EXPERIENCE: The views not only from the room, but the ranch itself were breathtaking. I am used to Southern CA coastline with homes and businesses lining the beaches. Here, a person can breathe. This is how it was intended to be. I am so glad The Inn was kept to the number of rooms it is and that they haven't expanded to some big hotel. It would lose the magic and wonder. I loved that the dining experience was just for guests and there was no traffic. It was intimate and made us feel a part of the ranch. I really valued the experience. We worked very hard to be able to have this experience. Being able to appreciate the land, the trails, and the history of how Mr. Wilson wants to keep the land as was well worth it. The lodge itself was gorgeous. From the stained glass windows at the entrance to the garden and the trails with such special views, I was overwhelmed with beauty. We were so lucky the flowers called "Naked Ladies" which only bloom for about two weeks each year bloomed while we were there. Those pink ladies were gorgeous. THE FUTURE: We are starting to save now for August 2035 for our 10th year anniversary. We look forward to what awaits us down the road when we visit again! Please don't change. Thank you for everything!

We were excited to come after getting jealous from watching Reels on their Instagram, and boy- visiting in person was even 10x better. Would highly recommend going in the "Bay Area summer" of Sept/Oct because the weather was unbeatable, not a cloud in the sky as we enjoyed the pristine, awe-striking CA coast. We stayed in the Hearthstone Junior Suite and had our own private jacuzzzi underneath the stars. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner (and the drinks!) were Michelin star-worthy, and the staff was incredibly friendly and helpful (special shout out to Misha and Timmy who were especially accommodating to my service pug, Gus). The menu for each meal consisted of fresh food directly from the ranch. The creativity put into dishes honestly had me shocked that this place doesn't have a Michelin star already. SO so so delicious. 6 out of 5 stars. The Inn at Newport Ranch is like a secret gem, but I'm not going to gatekeep its beauty. CanNOT wait to come back soon!

Everything was thought out in advance, and we really appreciated that level of care. The room itself was nice, and the ocean view from the balcony was lovely. The location is great, and the property definitely has that classic coastal Fort Bragg vibe. That said, for nearly $300 a night, there were a couple of misses. The shampoo bottle mounted in the shower was empty, which was disappointing -- especially at that price. Thankfully, I had brought my own. It was also pretty noisy early in the morning, with doors slamming throughout the building, which made it hard to get solid rest. Because of those things, I'm taking off one star. It's the type of vacation where you really get to enjoy life and truly 'vacation'. No cell, no tv, nothing is 'jacked in', you are free to just completely exist without the ties of our modern, every day life. I LOVED IT! This is a 1940's era motor lodge set in a deep ravine. Upon stepping out of your car you are immediately transported back to a different time. There are only 10 cottages of varying occupancy. A communal fire pit, horseshoes, tire swing, ping pong, dirt-pad Basketball court, a million bikes, a hammock, volleyball court. When I stepped out of the car, I felt like I was in a 70's summer camp movie, half expecting some big haired guy with cut off jeans and no shirt to step out of a cottage (that happened later). My kid immediately went wild, exploring and mingling with the other kids, playing and having fun. I got to enjoy the hammock with an adult beverage. Short walk to the private beach and even though CA is in a severe drought the swimming hole is still sufficiently filled to allow for cliff diving from a 5 foot height. A couple of early teen boys were enjoying themselves doing that. My kid and I floated in the inner tubes provided. The water is crystal clear. Beautiful and relaxing. The cottages are small, decorated mid-century modern-ish. Basic and clean. We stayed in the dog friendly unit of which there are two. They allow dogs off leash. Your dog can wander around like she owns the place. We love dogs so it's fine with us. The first night we were there only 2 other cottages were filled and the kids immediately bonded and hung out. The second night we were there we were the only ones not part of a group from the Bay Area that had rented out the entire place (except for our unit) as they do annually. I got the distinct impression that this happened a lot. This place is filled with friends that come up as an annual tradition. I hope to gather a group of friends and start a new tradition too! Seriously, in case you missed it. There is NO cell service and no tv. Some of the Verizon customers were able to receive calls but not call out. There are modern electrical outlets so you could cheat and bring a laptop with movies. We did, but didn't use it.

Pros: *It's a place that has a peaceful coastal vibe and being that it is remote, I love that it's not overrun by people and has a slower pace and has beach town vibes. It's great for disconnecting from life and relaxing! *The views are phenomenal and we absolutely loved watching sunsets every night while here! All rooms also have an incredible ocean view! *This place is dog friendly, meaning all the rooms here you can bring a dog. We love traveling with our dog and she loved the views on the balcony as much as we did! We paid $50 per night for having a dog and stayed here two nights (so $100 total). *We loved the patio and the chairs were very comfortable to sit in and we spent a decent amount of time here listening to the waves. We were in Suite 202 so the first floor may not have a balcony. *The room was clean. *This Inn has two places to eat, Black Sands Bistro and Delgada Pizza, which is very convenient. They also have a Venezuelan restaurant that is amazing right next door. I can't comment on the pizza because we didn't eat there. We got expresso shots at Black Sands Bistro one morning because we ran out of coffee and my husband got a slice of cake and beer there one day, which he said was good. *The road is around 45 minutes in and back out and one lane in and out. I personally have driven on a windy road to Fort Bragg and up Hwy 1 and felt this road was a lot better than I was expecting with a lot of it paved so it was much better than I was expecting! *The town is small making it very walkable and drivable, which was really convenient because everything was a short distance away. *Easy check in and out. We were given and key and left early the day we checked out so there was a key drop off. *The Inn had doggy bags, which we didn't use since we had our own but appreciated. We saw some dog owners that were visitors not picking up after their dogs so "be better". Compliments to the Inn for trying their best to leave no trace. *The people in this town were so friendly and welcoming! Cons: *The Inn on the Lost Coast is outdated like others have mentioned in reviews. *There was one part of the rug in our room that was unraveling and the bed skirt had a hole in it and stains (see pics). *The smoke detector was ancient and had a red light flashing so I'm assuming it worked, but wasn't sure (see pic). *The rooms lack insulation so you can hear more than you would expect. To no fault of the Inn, we were right next to a very loud family that was not mindful of anyone else. Thankfully they checked out after day one! If you are visiting, please be mindful of others! Tips: *They have a general store, although I would highly recommend bringing a cooler and everything you would like with you in advance! We brought a portable expresso machine, Nespresso capsules, wine bottles, wine opener, some fresh food, and our favorite snacks and we were so grateful that we did! We visited the general store though for an item we forgot, to get more water, etc.

The good aspects is the beach town vibes. It is small, quaint but the views are stellar. It is absolutely beautiful to sit out on the balcony, drink some wine and listen to the waves as they crash on the rocks. We ate at a local brewery that is family friendly, Gyppo Ale Mill, with good food and drinks. We most likely won't ever be back to this place or Shelter Cove ever again, but it seems very enjoyable for a nice quiet vacation for someone who wants a little bit of a disconnect from society.
