I have never understood why this place has a low rating. The grilled fish is really good and very affordable. Their Mai Tai's are the best. It's right on the beach and the views are spectacular. We love whales tail for a quick and yummy no frills dinner. They have plenty of outdoor seating and the food is extremely reasonable. Our waiter Jose was awesome making sure we had everything we needed as well as being super nice. We had a shrimp Poboy and a blackened grouper sandwich with onion rings and both of them were great. Like I said, no frills, but for the price, you can't beat it. Their blackened fish sandwich with a little lemon squeeze is a great meal and the breading on their onion rings is super yummy! Should be removed from Bring Fido. Several families came with pets and all were refused dining in the main meal area upstairs. Several sent downstairs. The food was very disappointing despite the beach convenience. Everything was served cheap, plastic plates cups and utensils, very meager portions, no seasoning of rice or vegetables. Proteins were very dry and tasteless. Did not seem fresh at all. Likely reheated from the day before. Vegetables were straight from a frozen bag. The drinks at least had some flavor, the highlight of the food was the cob of corn. This place has so much potential but honestly is a waste of money. Parking limited. read more

Came here while on vacation with the family. It was walking distance from our condo so that was a plus. We had a fairly large group and they seated us quickly. Live music on the patio set a nice ambiance. The service was a little stilted, it seemed like the staff was very busy. It took a while for drinks to be delivered, and the water was tap water and tasted like Florida's water, if you know you know. The food was SO bland. The rice was unseasoned, the veggies were unseasoned and the carrots were hard. The fish and shrimp were cooked well but again unseasoned, the only thing that saved it was the sauce on top. Overall not the worst dining experience but the only reason I would return is the convenient location. read more

In complete honesty, the staff seemed too busy to service much of anything, bordering on rude. they were busy - i get it - but it costs nothing to be polite or courteous. the food, while tasty, was nothing really to write home about. I ordered calamari and a side salad (which was really just burger toppings on a plate). they do offer a few unique cocktails. so, if you want to eat and/or drink by the water, Whale's Tail is great! if you're looking for great food and service.... maybe look a little further. read more

So I. Ow believe you need to eat somewhere at least twice! My first experience was good! Went again last night and ordered the same thing and they tried pawning off a small sliver as a full tuna portion! I asked for extra rice and no veggies. Got same rice portions! Asked for the corn cob got none! Told the waiter and he brought me out a replacement tuna and it was normal size but undercooked! I ate it because tuna is good any way you eat it and he was a nice waiter and we tipped him accordingly but very disappointed and prob won't go back read more

The only reason I'm giving it a 4 star is because the sauces were not it for the shrimp and if do want to substitute something they take away everything to substitute. For example your food comes with the side of veggies, corn and rice. But if you want fries they automatically take all sides away just to give you fries. read more

The view and the service is the only thing good about this place and I hate that for them. We went out for breakfast and god...the food was AWFUL. McDonalds serves warmer food. My husbands chorizo egg dish (I can't remember the exact name) was cold. I ordered the steak and eggs (menu says beef tenderloin) BRO. IT WAS A SIRLOIN AT BEST, and that's the worst cut of steak, for me personally. It was cooked perfectly but had no seasoning. If it would've been an actual beef tenderloin I wouldn't have minded the plastic silverware they provide, but cutting a sirloin (even a rare sirloin, that I ordered) I still had a hard time sawing into the steak. I said all that to say that this place is definitely a tourist trap, no locals go here because they know the food is no good. The coffee was so weak it should have been listed as coffee water. The generic premade frozen biscuits were neither good nor bad; just kind of there. I almost missed the tiny fragment of bacon hiding under the slice of plastic cheese on the biscuits. Even the home fries were poorly seasoned and a little bland. There was an air of apology about the employees as if they knew the owner was overcharging $35 for an unappetizing $20 breakfast. The view was terrific, but not $35 worth of terrific. Yeah... it's a NO! New to town and found the Whale's Tail. Nice location on the beach. Walked up and from the moment the Host greeted us knew... we should have moved on. Sticky tables, plastic cups, bad service, bad food, and just overall bad Vibe. This place could be great - if they put any effort into it. No hustle in the wait staff. I simply asked for a suggestion and felt as though they were bothered. The burger was recommended. When it arrived it was nothing more than a microwaved frozen fake beef patty on a bun. $16.95 and an additional $1.50 for cheese... unacceptable. Frozen (not fresh) vegetables added to "plates" toy make them pricey dinners. The place isn't even trying. Waited for water, plastic ware, and simple request such as lemon, butter, and salt. At one point, we assume the manager, asked "how does it taste", he knew the answer as I started to shake my head - just NO. Before we could have a conversation he quickly interjected "I'll remove it from your bill" and simply ran away. Waiter took the burger away and once our party finished up their plates returned with "the bill" on the electric table device. The Burger was still on the bill and an "$8 Disgruntled Customer" was removed from the total. - Again - NOPE. Waiter seemed to know the routine and went back and tried to negotiate with the manager on the bill. Came back a 3rd time and stood over us with machine to add tip and pay bill. Again just rude. Waiter cleared table before the rest of the party could get up from our seats. Uncalled for and simply rude behavior from a hospitality / service industry business. So much potential with the location.. but all the other things that really matter they failed on. read more

Weekend trip to Destin area and stumbled across this gem. Highly recommended for a perfect spot to catch an amazing sunset. Love the vibe with restaurant bar upstairs with inside and outside seating. Bottom section is a nice lively bar deck area with seating on the beach. Dinner was good and service was nice and friendly staff. My fish wrap was flavorful and simple. Fish meal was nice as well but mahi mahi as little overcooked and dry otherwise would have been a 5 star place. Nice 2 for 1 drinks and 10% off the meal during happy hours which is daily from 3-6 pm. The Caesar wrap was okay. I also got a sprite and it was very refreshing. The view is so pretty. The only thing that really turned me off was how many bugs there are on all of the picnic tables. They are the little chigger/wood bugs. They got into my food and my drink to the point I felt like I could not eat/drink it anymore. Parking is also a disaster. We decided to try this place despite the reviews, and needless to say, we will NEVER be back. From the first of us sitting, we waited about 10 minutes before anyone came to see to our table and it was NOT busy. It took a while to bring our drinks and when our food was brought out it wasn't good. The crab was bland and was so hard to get out, the steamed shrimp was ice cold which was served with the hot crab. Didn't make sense. The sides were unseasoned. my husband's Cuban sandwich which he eats all the time at numerous places was inedible. It looked like lunch meat thrown on bread that was grilled to a crisp. He threw it right in the trash. When the bill came, to our surprise, the crab/shrimp wasn't the advertised price at all and was EXTREMELY overpriced for the tasteless food that we receive. For the six of us, it was over $300 and it wasn't worth $100! If I could give this a zero star, I would! read more

It's over priced, under wowed, like a family restaurant going under and trying to extract any value it has left in its name and convenience for being on the water before it goes under. For what I could tolerate for the price of what I ate, it was subpar okay. For the mixed drinks I ordered, they're undercutting alcohol and overpricing the drinks. We recently visited The Whale's Tail in Miramar Beach, Florida, and had a pretty good experience overall. I ordered the fried clam basket, and it was tasty with a decent portion size. Another person in our party had the munch basket but wished they could have just gotten fish and shrimp without the chicken. One of the kids really enjoyed their mini corn dog, while the other wasn't a fan of the cheeseburger, but that was more because they liked the name "Pirate Burger" rather than the actual meal. There was live music during our visit, which might have been for a special event (Luke Combs Bootlegger weekend), so that was a nice touch. Overall, the food was good, about what you'd expect from a casual beachside spot. We'd give it 4 out of 5 stars. Perfect for a laid-back meal with a view and the family. Well the Whales Tail hasn't changed in 20 years. Still serving so so food and so so service. Been coming to the Miramar Beach area since 1991. Remember when the Tail opened once upon a time and came to try it out and thought, OK they're still working through it. Drifted back in after they've been opened a couple of years and found, in my opinion, Nothing amazing. Beer was cold and so was the food. And now here in 2026 for the Sound Wave music fest and here on the beach and had a couple of drinks that were OK and ordered food, and it did not disappoint. Still just so so. Nice thing about it, this was the first time for my wife and over the years she kept saying let's try the Tail and I would put her off and say "l'm afraid you will be disappointed" but finally gave up and low and behold, they held true to what I said 20 years ago after my last visit. Still just so so. So if you are looking for a place on the beach with cold drinks and food, this is it. read more
