Flavors were excellent and we did love it...just not the value. 3.5 stars. All American - Generous amount of relish but the cheese was queso fresco and not cheddar. It was edible but not great. I inquired about the cheese and was told it was cheddar! No apologies were made. Very unfortunate. 3 stars. I'm sure the other dishes here are stellar and we just ordered the wrong items. Stopped at this place in between our drive from Key Largo back to Miami. I ordered the grilled calamari salad and my husband ordered a white fish roll. The server was very patient with our questions and was happy to accommodate. I can't believe how much meat came on the salad and the roll. The fish meat was very tasty and very fresh. We ate outside on the dock, and even saw a manatee go by. This of course is not guaranteed but was a nice treat to our dinner. read more

Best lobster roll I've had to date! Small little restaurant with only outside seating. The owner was very friendly and went over all the menu options on the overhead board. We already knew we wanted the lobster rolls. Rolls also come with chips as a side although they have the typical side options if you want something different. We opted for no mayo. We were on our way down to Key West from Miami and decided to make a pit stop at What the Fish Rolls. It was technically our first stop and totally set the tone for our trip! Right when we walked in the owner welcomed us and explained the menu. He was so nice and you could tell he was passionate about the food he was serving. We decided to go with the cast away shrimp roll and calamari salad and split the two. The shrimp roll came loaded with shrimp and it was somehow light and filling. The sandwich also came with a side of chips. Totally recommend this. The calamari salad was so light and refreshing. The calamari were grilled perfectly and weren't chewy at all. Aside from the delicious food the restaurant is right on the water so you can eat with a nice view. We were lucky that there was a slight breeze also so it wasn't too hot. While eating the owner checked in on us and made sure everything was ok, he also offered to take a few pictures of us after seeing us trying to take a selfie. Well this is a huge disappointment, came a couple years ago and really enjoyed the place. Looked it up and made sure they were open this time around. Lobster Rolls at $30 a pop were a slight letdown, not because of the lobster meat (which was adequate) but because of the overwhelming cilantro flavor. Lobster was a bit dry and probably needed some additional butter or light mayo. The fresh mahi also at $30 was good but not great. Outdoor seating is a plus and service was decent. Perhaps the sky-high reviews led me to expect a stellar dining experience and matching culinary explosion. 'Twas not to be. In my experience, restaurants in Islamorada and Marathon tend to be overrated, probably because of the excitement people have while eating on their drive to Key West. A true must stop on the way back to Miami from the keys. The owner was so great and personable and helped our group of 4 land on the right order (which ended up being 4 orders of fish tacos, and 2 orders of conch fritters -- all delicious!). We enjoyed our food and a beer on the patio and chatted with a lovely boat owner who docks right next door. Arrived to What The Fish Rolls on a Saturday around noon and was greeted by the owner Alessandro. Nicest guy ever! He took the time to recommend different dishes based on what we were craving and gave us a whole background story on how his concept came to life. Now for the food... my mouth is watering just writing about it! Extremely fresh, and flavorful. We got the lobster roll and the ceviche and both were 10/10. Usually I'm very picky with my lobster rolls and I'm not a big fan of mayo - but I trusted his recommendation and got it anyway, and wow! Did not disappoint. Cooked to perfection + the sauce added was buttery and delicious. Now for the ceviche, done Peruvian style, the aji sauce was so rich and tasty. The fish was extremely fresh and everything was just so refreshing for a hot day in the Keys. They shack has a nice water view and it's just what we wanted to enjoy this perfect meal.
