You know how sometimes you drive by a place, and say "Hmm, I should check that place out sometime", but the location and the way the exterior looks always turns you off? Talk about a diamond in the rough. If you have ever felt this way, do yourself a favor and stop in! Once you go inside, your expectations will change and will only go up. Perhaps they want to start you off with such low expectations walking in that everything ends up being great, but whatever the case may be.....This is my go-to Vietnamese food! Came here on Friday and boy oh boy. Not only was the food delicious, but the service I received was amazing. There was only 3 tables in there at the time (I eat dinner late) so perhaps that is why service had some much attention on me but the lady (one of the owners) who was taking care of us took time to explain the less common dishes on the menu as well as ingredients that go into the dishes. We tried both the fried and steamed spring rolls and I have to say, the steamed were amazing while the fried were average fried spring rolls. The home made peanut sauce the steamed spring rolls come with was fantastic! My girlfriend ordered the Pho, and since I knew I'd get to share that and experience the Pho here, I ordered a traditional? clay pot dish. The Pho was excellent and I'd compare it to any GOOD Pho place you've been to. The clay pot dish was "Steamed Pork" and honestly tasted just like Mongolian beef, but with pork instead. Ughhhh I so wanted this to be a better experience than it was... I have recently been on a quest to get the wifey to adopt and appreciate Vietnamese food. On a cold Tuesday night we ventured out with the hopes of going to "another" Vietanmese resturant that I knoew she already was begining to like. While in route to this other resturant, the wifey pulled up Yelp to check the hours of this "other" vietnamese resturant and found out with great dismay that they were closed on Tuesday...NO! So after cruising Yelp we found Pho 54 was opened and decided to take our party of four there. We came in at about 8:00pm on a Tuesday adn the resturant was empty except for 2 people at another table. We sat down, ordered our orange sodas (which for some reason is my go to for Asian food???) and began to cruis through their menu. After reviewing the menu we decided on the grilled beef spring rolls for a starter, a Grilled Pork Banh Mi to share with the table and 4 bowls of the Pho Special. The Beef srping rolls were tasty but rolled a little too limp for my liking. Thy also were a little heavy handed with the fish sauce. Others in our party had the pork and shrimp sprimg rolls which they also commented on the extra use of fish sauce. The Banh mi was ok...I'm a Banh Mi snob. The bread tasted frozen then toasted and the toppings were OK...still a little heavy on the fish sauce. This would be the best thing we had this night. Then out come our 4 large bowls of Pho and two plates of fixins (the usual, thai basil, bean sprouts, jalepenos, cilantro and limes). We each dug into our bowls, mixing up all the goodness when we came across alot of hidden tripe and tenden in each bowl. Now I know that traditionally tripe and tendons are typical in Pho but we specifically ordered the Pho Special which DID NOT list Tripe as one of the proteins in the bowl. This discovery of tripe and such did not help with my mission to enlighten the wifey as to the ways of Vietnamesse cooking. We all spent about 10 minutes searching for those little alien-esque pieces of Tripe and Tendon in our bowl to remove them onto what was now a communal plate of endtrails. After we each secured that our bowls were now Tripe free, we topped each of our bowls to our likings. The Pho Special listed that it came with rare beef (which there was none) well done beef (which there was little at best) and meat balls. The meat balls were rubbier than the Tripe! The broth was decent tasting but that was it. After we each spent about 15 minutes trying to convinve ourselves that we were liking what we were tasting, the wifey finally called it and out right stated that this wasnt good. We all concurred and asked for our checks. With other great Pho/Vietnamese options now in Indy, I do not recomend this place, even in a pinch when your fav Pho spot is closed. We ended the evening contemplating running across the street to Sea Island or the Pupuseria...I hate paying for food and leaving hungry. read more

My quest for the perfect pho continues; this time with Pho 54. It's a nice shop with pretty decent pho. It's a little bit different than other pho places: they didn't offer any of tripe, tendon, or brisket options. I love those so that's a negative for me. On the other side, they had the freshest bean sprouts I've ever had. The soup base was rather refreshing as well and less umami-ish. It's a little different but delicious, nonetheless. read more

Been there twice now and everything I've tried is delicious! They have quite a selection for vegetarians, and the vegetarian "beef" pho is so good. The second time I went I was tempted to go with the pho again but decided on the vegetarian special sandwich and a cup of vegetable soup. I'm glad I tried it because it was great! The sandwich tasted fresh and had a meaty sort of flavor (but not the nasty fake meat taste you sometimes get with mock meat products). My boyfriend got the imperial shrimp which was also super yummy. Their lunch specials are very cheap but my friend who ordered it said that while he was impressed by the price and quantity of food, our meals were much tastier. I only held back one star because the service is not great. The wait staff seems to disappear into the kitchen a bit too often and they brought out everyone's dishes at different times. read more

I ate here for the first time earlier this week. I have to say, I wasn't expecting much when I saw the exterior. However, I really wanted some Vietnamese food so I decided to try this place. I had the Goi Rolls as an appetizer and they were delicious. Exactly how I like them and the peanut plum sauce that goes with them is amazing. For the main entree I had Hue Beef Noodle Soup, which is something I usually get when I go to Vietnamese restaurants. Needless to say, I was not disappointed. The soup was delicious and perfectly spicy. There wasn't a whole lot of beef in the soup but there was plenty of bean sprouts and jalapenos to add to the soup. The bowl was huge and I probably only finished about half. The prices are decent as well for the portion sizes that you receive. My only complaint is that I ordered water and was never asked if I wanted or needed a refill. With the spicy soup I drank my water very quickly but I could never see the lady who brought me my food. In terms of Pho options, their menu is somewhat limited. They don't have much variety in the meat put in their pho (mainly rare beef, well done beef and beef balls) and there is only one size (you can't pick small, medium or large- I estimate the bowl size is a medium). However, they hit the nail on the head with what they DO serve. The rare beef pho is what we always get and it is probably top 3 pho bowls I've ever had. If you are someone who eats pho a lot, you'll notice there isn't a strong star anise flavor, but it doesn't change the fact that their beef broth is unparalleled. Another cold day with the polar vortex approaching once more....time for pho! I usually go to another Vietnamese restaurant in town that is slightly farther away, but a friend and I decided we wanted to try somewhere new. I have to say, I was a little nervous about trying this place after reading some recent reviews describing roaches...I'm happy to say though that we saw none of the critters and the place looked very clean. Whew... We both had the soft spring rolls which had more vegetables than typical, but I considered this a good thing since it made the fact that I ate two whole ones seem slightly healthy. I had the beef pho; I figured go classic since this was my first time here. The beef was tender and tasty. The platter of sprouts, peppers, cilantro, basil and lime was nice and fresh. The broth needed a little sriracha, but they brought that with the bowls, so we didn't even have to ask for it. Definitely solid pho. I think I still like the pho at my usual place a bit better, but this was good! They seem to have a lot of items on the menu with meat substitutes (unless things were confused in translation). Under vegetarian items, things such as "veggie beef pho" are listed. I asked if this was vegetables with beef (meaning, not vegetarian, but something I might like). The server, who I think might have also been the owner, quickly steered me back to the meat section of the menu when I asked if the "veggie beef" had real beef or imitation. They also have "veggie chicken". So....unless I totally misunderstood, there are a ton of vegetarian and possibly vegan items on the menu. As far as service, I think the owner and one other person were working tonight, but our orders were taken promptly and food did come out quickly. We did have some trouble getting napkins to control the mess we were making with our spring rolls, but did finally manage to get some. Do expect to have to flag someone down if you need anything, but it really was not a huge deal. I live by Purdue but the meh pho place by me was closed for the day after christmas. I had an intense pho craving and drove to the next closest (and open) one in Indy. My only hope was that the broth would be better than the one I live by, and it was. The pho is a smidge better than some places, but I gave it 5 stars for service and that it satiated my craving in spite of the hour drive. When we got there, it was slow, an hour before closing. At a lot of restaurants, it seems like service is worse when things are slow because people are goofing off, but the very nice uncles or grandfathers working here were still on their A-game. They were closing and seemed ahead of things so the server was still attentive, fast, and able to go in their iPad. This makes me happy because I am being fed a hot delicious soup and am getting refills on my drink while this man is able to watch his dramas. They also had real and taken care of plants in the restaurant. In more humble restaurants this is a good sign. Plants are not expensive, like really nice furnishings or lighting, but it takes time to feed and take care of them. I ordered the crab rangoon, large rare beef pho, pot stickers, and goi roll- it was so much food for two people but I'm not complaining! As someone who loves to cook, Vietnamese food, or I should say good Vietnamese food, is hard to make - and who doesn't want a steaming bowl of pho prepared for them on a cold fall day? The interior looked nice upon pickup although the location itself was a little tricky to get to coming from the south. Overall very good food! Definitely caters towards a wider crowd than egg roll #1 (and is closer for me) but as someone who loves crab rangoon regardless of its status as Vietnamese I was very happy.
