Pho 54 is the single best spot in Indy for Pho noddles among other things. The staff is always very friendly and works hard to meet every need. I usually get an order of crab rangoons because I'm a sucker for those, and a vegetarian Pho (I am always asked if I want Veggie broth specifically, and I think this is a very thing). The food is ready when they say it will be, and always fresh. Great place to take out, or dine in. My daughter and I love the young coconut water too. So yummy. I love this place! read more

This place serves better food than what you would think, based on the building's exterior. I have recently found that I am a fan of Pho soup! This place is so close to my house, I had to give it a try. It is good...but it is not my favorite (that title is currently held by King Wok- change my mind...!). The basic broth for the pho soup needs some work, but with some Hoisin and Sriracha Sauce, lime juice, cilantro and basil, it really brings it to life. My family and I love this place--so much we're starting to become regulars! It's so difficult to find good pho/Vietnamese food, especially being in Indianapolis but this is a pretty good option! I particularly love that it's so close to where I go to school, Butler. In agreement with other reviewers, yes the outside does not look very inviting. But the inside is very clean, quiet and nicely arranged. Only downfall is it appears there's no AC, rather there are a couple of fans for circulation. Service has always been good; staff speaks Vietnamese and is very kind and we have never waited uncomfortably long for our food. The pho is 4/5--it does the job but could use much more flavors and additions; it lacks common add-ins such as more meatballs, tripe, tendons, etc. (I'm very picky when it comes to pho.) However, their veggies are incredibly fresh! Whether it's their basil or bean sprouts or even their goi cuon, you can really taste the freshness! Speaking of which, their brown peanut sauce served with their goi rolls is THE BEST I've had in a long time!! Definitely recommend getting those! So I ordered at the counter I had the sweet and sour chicken with fried rice I ordered some coffee ice with condensed milk. The chicken was superb sauce was just ok nothing special about sweet and sour sauce. Rice was nothing memorable. What stood out the most was the chicken. Coffee was too sweet for my taste and too strong if that makes sense. I will add to my review once I try the pho. Also I forgot to mention the server that made my coffee was so nice. My bf and I visited his family in Indy and they're vegan so was tasked with finding a Vietnamese restaurant that offers vegan foods since I speak the language. I called around and most Vietnamese restaurants in Indy unfortunately do not offer real vegan selection. For example, i called saigon restaurant and asked if the vegan pho made of vegan broth and they said no it's beef broth and they add vegetables, so I asked if the stir fried veggie dishes is made with vegan oyster sauce as a back up plan for my vegan peeps, and the restaurant said no it's made with regular oyster sauce. It was really confusing since the menu items said vegetarian section so not sure why they were being unethical and used beef and oyster in their cooking and called it "vegetarian". Until I stumbled upon Pho 54. The owner spoke Vietnamese to me and assured me that the vegan items on the menu is indeed vegan since she's a vegan herself for 40 years. I was able to chat with her a bit on the phone on the ingredients and knew right away that she's the real deal when it comes to vegan foods. There's a term in Vietnamese for full vegan called "an chay truong", and she is one. This means no egg, honey, cheese, anything animal bi products in their foods. When we got to the restaurant, the menu was misleading since the items on the vegan section said "vegetable specialties" and items underneath stated "fish in clay pot", etc. after talking to the owner some more (she was also our waitress - extremely mom and pop joint), I realized the menu is that way since she's not fluent in English and she tried to translate the menu herself. I told her that she should switched the wording to vegan everything under that section since her foods are the real deal. Even I was not vegan myself, the vegan menu looked so good that I had to order most of them. The services were so slow so we were hungry when most of the foods came out, so sorry that this review may miss some of the courses . We ordered "Vietnamese vegan pancake" which should be translated as "Vietnamese vegan crispy crepe" but hey, she tried her best. It was absolutely delicious, which came with vegan fish sauce as well. Vegan egg roll, stir fried eggplant with vegan oyster sauce, stir fried mixed veggies, grilled vegan beef on noodle, vegan bun rieu cua, and vegan pho were equally delicious. My favorites were definitely the vegan crispy crepe and the stir fried eggplant (make sure you ask her to add tofu). I also got a regular pho with real beef and it was not as tasty since she's the head cook but cannot taste the broth so it's really going off of aroma while she cooks these non-vegan dishes. I personally would not get non-vegan foods here again. The Banh mi was too small and made using a sweet bun, which is really far from what banh mi should be so that's a no-go for me as well. Strongly recommended for vegan cuisines and would come back anytime I crave something healthier and more humane dishes. read more

Located off busy Michigan Road in a dearth of fast food, this family owned shop should be a welcome beacon fotr intrepid errand runners . We stopped by about 3 pm on a Monday hoping for a quick bite for hungry kids. Place was deserted except for a few take out wait-ers. We ordered from an unenthusiastic server who had to ask us several times to repeat our order. We found it more constructive to just point. I got the spring rolls w peanut sauce, nicely rolled and sauce was plentiful. About 10 minutes later our shrimp rolls arrived then my raw lemon beef. Beef dish was very good with lots of big chewy pieces and marinated veggies. Would have liked more shrimp crisps but who doesn't? Sadly , it was another 30 minutes before anything else arrived, we had now been there almost 55 minutes. I am pretty sure the cook/chef was not even back there while we waited, I didn't see or smell cooking. My daughter did not get her Thai tea or egg roll, and the sprite and lemonade drinks were refilled with water. Not sure if no refills is their policy but a new glass for new liquid is pretty standard. Our mains were pretty good, and standard. A seafood hot pot was plentiful with pale crab and octopus pieces. Pork w fried rice and sweet and sour chicken rounded out the table with huge (not in a good way) pieces of vegetables and a small cup of fried rice. We had to ask twice for the check and she seemed puzzled by our request for take out containers. The bill was not itemized so I could not tell if we had been charged for the things that were not brought Basic decor and design. I got take out Pho today and it was perfect. It you have never gotten takeout Pho - Typically it comes as a make your own soup project! Hint - Make just enough since left overs (if you have any) don't hold up once combined! This is soo yummy! The noodles are perfectly cooked and the broth has an amazing spice. I am not a huge fan of the greens so I don't add to much, but the jalapenos are a great touch - I tend not to eat them, but they heat up the broth perfectly! I finally had the chance to get some pho, and it was heavenly! Who would have thought that some broth, chicken, veggies and noodles would make your whole body so happy? When I opened up my carry-out order, the pho was deconstructed into broth, veg, noodles and meat. This keeps the soup from settling together and keeps the fresh veggies and spices from getting soggy. I poured the beef broth into a bowl and added each ingredient to the tasty liquid. A heaping mound of rice noodles, chicken, bean sprouts, a little fresh mint and cilantro, a slice of jalapeno, some homemade sauce. Pure comfort food. Even my two kids were eating it! And they don't like anything. This stuff will make your soul sing! Whenever you're feeling down for whatever reason, stop taking chemical medicines and get some pho instead. It was my first experience ordering Pho specifically, you know as an entree. I got the Pho Special. It was very good and interesting. I was surprised to find beef stomach lining and sliced beef tendons in there in addition to the meat balls and a couple kinds of sliced beef muscle. I added some mixed veggies for $1 upcharge. I was told there would be bok choy, but it was carrots, broccoli, and peapods. The server was happy to give me to go containers for my leftovers because the large is very large. Best pho I've had in Indy! Great prices and service. I really wanted to try the banh mi, but we already over-ordered, so that's definitely on the list for next time. Everything my husband, daughter, and I ordered was delicious. This gives me some stress about our next visit because I will have such a hard time making a choice. (Yes, First World Problems, indeed.) My husband had the Rice Noodle Combination, and in a rare occurrence, raved about it the entire time he was eating it. (He likes Vietnamese ok, but never gets too excited about it.) The server (and I assume, Owner?) was very attentive and helpful. At one point, she asked him if he needed more sauce. Next, she grabbed his chopsticks and dug to the bottom of the bowl to check the sauce level, declaring happily that he "was good." In a less friendly context, this would have seemed annoying and intrusive, but in this atmosphere, it was sort of cozy - like your Mom taking care of you. Now, we are not Vietnamese dining virgins, but if you are, you will find her guidance very welcome and comforting. As a matter of fact, I can't think of many Asian restaurants where such care is taken with the guests to make them feel comfortable and not dumb about what they are doing. Overall, a very pleasant dining experience. The restaurant was clean and the service on a Wednesday night was efficient and very friendly. Goi roll appetizer was fresh and delicious. The rice noodle combination, with fresh hot grilled beef, sizzling egg rolls, fresh cold salad on the bottom and cold noodles, was a study in thermal, textural, and taste contrasts. Delicious! The only other place it's this good is Saigon, but it's at least a dollar more there (here, it was $7.95). We also had fish in hot pot that, although not served in the traditional clay pot, was wonderful, with a sauce that fairly popped with caramelized, salty flavor, and was topped with fresh onion and scallion. Overall, a wonderful dinner. They also have an extensive Chinese menu, none of which I have tried. But the Vietnamese food here rings true: light, flavorful, and delicious. read more

I moved to Indianapolis a year ago this October. One of the first places that I ate at while doing apartment searches was Pho 54. I had never tried Vietnamese before and always LOVE trying new cuisines! Let's just say that I liked it so much that I have been going back quite often. The building is not the most attractive from the outside and the decor is kind of bland but that's not what should impress a true foodie. The food should impress. And it most definitely did and continues to do so. The staff is always super friendly and will answer any questions that you have about the food or culture. The food is always amazing and the flavor is always consistent with flavor and freshness. I have recently moved to the east side of town, so about a 20 minute drive to Pho 54, but it is always worth the time to get the same welcoming experience every time. As for suggestions, if you have never eaten Vietnamese before and want to go for something traditional you MUST try the Pho Special (traditional Vietnamese soup) and the spring rolls with a yummy peanut sauce for dipping. read more

Craving for soup so went here for lunch last Saturday. Not sure if the place is officially open, or still in soft open stage. But you can tell from the inside, which is clean, bright, and newly painted. Odd note though with the few people that came for takeout, were parking along and blocking the driveway. Much improved compared to the first time we came here. The ingredients they use in their food is great. The way it is put together and presented needs work. 1. Service: the waiter is a teenager who does his job but lacks enthusiasm, maturity, and respect. You can tell a lot by the baggy shorts and T-shirt what he thinks about working there. Without great service you wouldn't want to come back no matter how good the food is. 2. Spring rolls AKA Goi Cuon AKA Goi Roll: The freshest we've tasted in Indy. The Shrimp and pork taste great but the wrapper was too wet and loose when the rolls came out. The sauce tastes like hoisin sauce. The sauce is boss and Pho 54 has nothing on King Wok. 3. Pho: great, light tasting soup base. Fresh meat. This was the standout dish. 4. I really liked my veggie beef pho! Large heaps of add-ins, enough pho for two meals, and all under $10. Living on the east side, this is a bit out of the way for me, but it's definitely worth the drive when craving some good Vietnamese food. Just don't go in expecting anything too fancy, because it's far from that, but the food more than makes up for the atmosphere. They also have Banh Mi, which is super exciting. I have yet to find somewhere in Indy that can do this well. I was craving some Pho last night, but I can't wait to go back to try the Banh Mi. They all looked to be priced right around $4. read more

Interesting place..a combination of Vietnamese and Chinese dishes under one roof. I'm so used to going to pho places that goes by numbers..such as Pho 213 or Pho 21 that when I saw this...it can be legit. The restaurant serves decent sized meals. Quality is good. I've had better pho soup but this one isn't that bad. The place is cheap. You'll be stuffed under $10. Don't expect desserts. No kids menu so bring something for the little ones who are picky eaters. I cannot tell you how much I wish I could give half stars, because I would give Pho 54 3.5 stars. Their lunch menu is great! Soup, egg roll, fried rice, and an entree for under $5! There about twelve choices on the lunch menu so you really can't go wrong. There is a full menu of other options too- with HUGE portions. The pho was giant. It would have been about three meals for me. The woman who took our order was extremely nice and made sure to get everyone's order correct. I think she was the owner. She seemed to take great pride in her business and was extremely nice. Everyone in my party of six got what they ordered in a timely manner. All the food was hot! The atmosphere is nothing special, but it's clean so that's a plus. It's not bad, just a little lackluster. I really want to go back so I can try some of the more authentic Vietnamese food. I started with the crab ragoons and spring rolls which i get at any asian place i go to and theirs was by far the best i've had. you can taste the fresh ingredients not the frozen stuff! Then i decided for their beef pho and it was great! The mix of herbs smelled at tasted great the small is enough for two. Being from a different culture i would advise people to try this more than once to get a true idea of the food. apart from the food the place is super clean and the sweet lady and gentleman treat you as if you're a part of the family. I am a major fan of bahn mis and part of what makes this sandwich amazing is the rice-flour baguette, a CRISPY outside and a LIGHT, SOFT inside. Their bahn mi buns were hard as a rock. My husband and I love Pho, and try to visit at least one restaurant when we are out of town. We chose this one because of it's reviews here on Yelp, however we were rather disappointed. We ordered beef spring rolls and pho tai. The spring rolls were good but seemed to be only lettuce and meat, and the fish sauce the came with was tasty but also nothing special. The pho though was very good, which is the only reason I even rated this restaurant 2 stars. The two primary reasons I rated this restaurant so low was because of our service and the overall restaurant environment. Our waiter was a young guy who was wearing a too big, stained, untucked shirt and we constantly had to remind him to bring us things we asked for. We had to ask for water three times before we got any, and twice for chopsticks to eat our pho with. I often saw him sitting in a booth up front doing nothing. He did apologize for his forgetfulness claiming they were busy, but there was only one other couple that was finishing up as we came in and another couple who sat down about half way through our meal; so it didn't really feel like a valid excuse. The other issue with Pho 54 we had was that it felt sort of dirty. Our booth had something splashed on the wall, and the whole place just kind of felt a little run down. I am not sure if it was me or them, but I think they have gotten a lot yummier than in prior years. I order the pho rare with the fresh spring rolls with peanut sauce.
