Was super hungry and wanted to find some food around 4PM during the week. Didn't think it would be that hard but a lot of restaurant were closed until 5PM. Service was ehhh. Food was extremely pricey for the little portions and Alright tasting food. Items ordered: Appetizer: Sauted Pei Mussels - the sauce was super tangy and for the price i think we had countable 15 mussels - that was pretty pathetic Shoestring truffle fries - there was barely any truffle flavor on the fries and the garlic aoili just tasted like straight mayo. Perhaps this should be just renamed to shoestring fries. Entree: Crab mac and cheese - i do not really know where the crab was. Perhaps it was shredded in there but there was no flavor of it. I think if they are going to call it crab mac and cheese they should really have chunks of crab as I was unable to taste or see it. Lobster Ravioli - the lobster ravioli lacked flavor - it definitely needed the sauce also where was my lump crab - that was not in site as well. Lastly while we were sitting there for the hour that we were there we were being attacked by flies. we were in the restaurant swatting flies. OMG, this place has gotten even better since i was here 3 years ago. the service was awesome and sat us right away despite the crowd they had. Our waiter was funny and the food was to die for. I brought my best friend and he actually moaned when he bit into the bruchetta! we did the appetizer sampler and it was the best anti-pasta i have ever had- meats, cheese, olives, bruchetta, mozzarella and tomatoes and basil. Then i got the chicken rigatoni (it was orgasmic) and he got the linguine and meatballs. The meatballs were packed with steam once you cut into them, with your fork! i wish i had more room so i could have tried a dessert but the watermelon cooler and the Manhattan were good enough to count as such. The service was not good. They made a mistake with one of our meals and had to remake it. Instead of letting us know that there would be a delay, they let us sit and wait and wait and wait. While they were remaking the dish, they left the rest of our dishes sitting there. By the time we got our food, my french fries were completely cold and my boyfriend's pizza was soggy from sitting out with tomato on top. Aside from the service, I still would not recommend eating here. As an appetizer, we got bruschetta. There were barely any onions in it and it tasted like you were just eating tomato and balsamic on a piece of bread. For the meal, I got a chicken caesar wrap, which was not good at all. My boyfriend's father got a pasta dish that cost $20 and the portion was so small that he left there still feeling very hungry. When we got our check, that's when we found out about the mistake because there was something we didn't order on it that was then discounted. When we asked the waitress about it, she said it was the kitchen's fault, not hers (which is a lie because the waitress, not the kitchen staff, enters the items into the computer) and did not offer any kind of apology for the mistake or the wait. Nice ambiance. Great service. Very small portions and overall a pretty poor value for a meal. Though they say they measure out a 6 oz glass of white wine, serving it in a huge red wine glass just leaves you feeling like they are being über cheap with the vino. Rather they use a smaller wine glass. Adding chicken to the porcini radiatori and you get 4 tiny dry chicken...nuggets. Seriously. It was a chicken strip cut into 4 pieces. Tasted good but the portions of the kids menu spaghetti was larger than the adult. The linguini w claims also tasted good BUT small portions and the pasta was clumped together like it had not been stirred. PS. This place in one word? Disgusting. We used to be locals, and in fact, while we were dating, I brought my wife here to celebrate our first "date" in the state of NY. We lived in the area for about 4 years and made a couple of visits, and remember that there were some pretty terrific and IMAGINATIVE pastas on the menu. We came back for a visit last week. They've dumbed down the menu to look like every other italian place on Broadway (and elsewhere); there's nothing imaginative about the menu whatsoever (except for the chicken riggies); and the food was beyond terrible. There was absolutely NOTHING special on the menu. My wife was so disappointed that she couldn't find the veal ragu with barolo sauce that she remembered from a few years ago. I don't know who thought it was a good idea to make the menu that stupid and unimaginative, but they deserve to get beaten by a pasta fork until they're black and blue. We had the pasta fagoli; what the hell happened to it? It was nothing like the rich, tomato-based yummy soup we've had there before. My wife had the gnocchi with bolognese sauce. The sauce was so bad that she picked around the sauce and ate the gnocchi. This, the woman who grew up with an italian mother who cooked all kinds of gnocchi, pasta, etc. That is really saying something about the ickiness of the food. My dish was a bland seafood pasta with just a few chunks of scallops. The prices are ridiculous for the amount of food you get. Our server was a complete moron and rude to boot. My family and I came here for my birthday lunch. The service was great, however the food was not good. I ordered a side caesar salad and the flatbread of the day. The caesar was very average and had nothing interesting about it. The flatbread came out cold and was very dry and flavorless. My boyfriend and I savored a late lunch at this gem. The crab cakes are to die for- I couldn't detect any filler; it was all sumptuous sexy crab! The homemade pasta was perfectly al dente. The bread was freshly heated, soft innards and crusty crust... perfectly complemented by fruity olive oil. I've eaten at Wheatfields many times and I've had a positive experience in the restaurant. I have celiac disease and I cannot eat gluten and I am sensitive to cross-contamination, and I appreciate that Wheatfields offers gluten free options and that they're careful when dining in. That being said, there have been two occasions when I've ordered to-go and there have been serious errors in my order. Most recently, Mealeo said that the order would be ready by 1:03 PM and the person who scheduled the order with the kitchen misread it as 1:30 PM (the manager then said that this was an error on Mealeo's end, which it was not). Additionally, the gluten free baguette that I had ordered was a regular baguette, which is dangerous for me to eat had I not called to confirm that the order was incorrect. In my previous to-go order, I had been given regular pasta instead of gluten free pasta and again, had I not called to check, I would have been eating food that would make me extremely sick. read more

Tim, the owner, is very proud of the quantity of marsala wine that actually goes into his creation. You will not get a better chicken marsala anywhere. I felt a bit torn on booking a reservation here for NYE because of the mixed reviews but I decided to go for it. I am glad I did. We ordered the arancinis which are like little rice and cheese balls deep fried and then stacked in a creamy sauce. I looooved the sauce and went a bit overboard in covering the arancinis in it. I ordered the eggplant parm and my boyfriend ordered the scarpetta I believe. I really liked the butter they give you with the bread but beware of the garlic in it if you plan to kiss anyone after your meal. For dessert I had the flourless cake which was a special just for the night and my boyfriend had the tiramisu. I really liked the meal and the bottle of red wine we ordered to go with it. I thought everything was tasty and pleasing to my palette. The thing I liked the most was probably the arancinis. I couldn't finish the cake because it was so rich and dense. The main issue is that I felt SUPER sick about 2 hours later because of how much fat was involved in the meal. Five friends walk into Wheatfields... this place is warm and inviting to walk into. We started with a bottle of wine and the calamari. Wine selection was great and reasonable. The calamari was a little sauce heavy (think sweet and sour Asian) but the calamari were light and crispy and not chewy. Some us started with the house salad or a Caesar salad. My house salad was perfectly dressed. All the greens and veggies looked and tasted fresh. We ordered: the lobster ravioli, gnocchi, crab Mac n cheese, the porcini radiatori, and linguini and clams. Me and my 2 friends went here as a girls day out. (We are 18-20 so we normally get a lot of dirty looks from upper class restaurant hostess who believe we can't pay, this wasn't the case here.) We were warmly greeted and allowed to select our seating (It wasn't very busy). We had a choice of up front or in the back and then booth or table. We ended up picking a booth in the back which was nice. Our server brought my friend a gluten free menu per her request (The gluten free menu is a whole page). Drinks were brought out swiftly. When I saw the sign that said gluten free homemade linguini, I was sold. The problem is, if you have serious allergies, watch out. I can't have gluten or dairy and specifically told the waitress. I gave her food options in case my first option could not be made both GF and DF. She assured me it could. We waited FOREVER for our food (our poor 3.5 year old!). It comes out and we gulp it up. Not long after, I feel nauseous and then massive bloating. SOMEONE put dairy in my food. Dairy = butter, milk but not eggs, dear serving staff and chefs. It's like a locally owned Olive Garden in terms of food quality. Fresh pasta is on the heavy side, not like Grandma's, they obviously either use an electric pasta maker or over knead their dough. Pet peeve...If you go to the trouble to make your own pasta, why not bake your own bread. Sure the bread was defrosted and then baked in their oven, but it is nothing special. Herbed butter was nice with the hot bread. I ordered the margarita pizza with sausage--They use cheap sausage, why do people skimp???? If you went to the trouble of procuring Cappiello fresh mozzarella, why not go with the local Sindoni Sausage as well? Hubby had cheese ravioli...pasta was heavy and sauce was really nothing special. We entered the place around 7PM and although there were two empty tables, we were made to wait 20-25 minutes. When we were finally seated we ordered our food and drinks. I asked for sparkling water and the waiter said they didn't have any ("club soda okay?") to which I retorted "you don't have Saratoga?" after seeing those blue bottles on the other tables. Only then did he give me one. So I went on to order ziti and meatballs and my son ordered the chicken scarpetta. He asks for grated cheese and the waiter comes not with fresh cheese and grater, but with those bottles of cheap parmigian cheese used in pizzerias. The last and final straw was the take out container. I barely touched my dinner because I was still full from lunch so I asked to take my ziti and meatballs home. The other guests were given hard durable plastic containers while I was given those flimsy plastics (used for bread and other dry items) so after just a few steps outside, my food spilled out onto the plastic bag and it ended up in the trash bin. read more

I say unfortunately because I had 1.5 hours, while waiting for our entrees, to write a review and maybe if I was able to post this during our experience we may have received our meals in a reasonable time. Let me say that our server was great. Very personable and attentive to us although a couple items came out with bad timing before our meal ( maybe not her fault but a bad kitchen firing??). Anyway, for my first trip to Saratoga and a few experiences with local establishments NAILING service, food time to table, food quality and on point service this was by far the worst experience while here so far. A table of six with no apps, we literally waited 1 1/2 hours for our meals. All this without a visit from a manager with any sort of apology for the delay. Come to find out the owner was there with 20 guests and "the owner gets what the owner wants" was the reason everything was pushed back and delayed. That knowledge to me, having 20+ years of restaurant experience and another 18 years of being a service business owner, that's just pure disregard for those patronizing your establishment and paying your bills. I will say when we did finally get our meals we were mostly pleased with them. Could have been from partial low blood sugars and a NEED to eat but for the majority it was well constructed and flavors were on point. We went to Wheatfields after a long weekend up in Saratoga at the racetrack, and the O.A.R concert at SPAC! The place was NOT at all how I remembered it from last year. Our waitress sadly had the worst breath ever, and her apron smelled terrible. We sat inside, and there was so many flies I was worried that there was something wrong with the food. I got the mac and cheese which was actually really delicious. My boyfriend ordered the buffalo chicken pizza, it was very average and not at all what we expected. We love Saratoga. We travel here with friends, and every time we're excited to visit the local restaurants. Wheatfields is a favorite by far - for both the food and drinks. The restaurant is beautifully designed, upscale, but not pretentious. Dimmed lights and cozy tables give you a private feel. The waitstaff is very friendly and welcoming, and can make great suggestions. Their knowledge of the menu is impressive. Take a good look at the specials menu - the chef goes out of his way to create delicious offerings. Everything is going to arrive at the table at the same time, and your waiter will check on you frequently without being obtrusive. Our entire table enjoyed their meals, drinks, appetizers - all gushing about the quality and flavors throughout. Wheatfields will continue to be a favorite - thankfully so! read more

I was visiting Skidmore for a friend's bday and we decided on italian for his bday dinner. He suggested this place and no one could say no to the b-day boy. The menu was a pretty standard italian menu. We walked in only to find that it was a 20-30 minute wait. We decided to walk around town to pass the time. 20 minutes later we arrive back to the restaurant only to find out that our table wasn't ready. So we decided to hit the bar. Another 20 minutes later, we are seated. Not too happy with the wait, but when was the last time you believed the host when they said your table was going to be ready in x minutes? To my surprise our bread/appetizers/entrees actually came out pretty quickly. Bottom Line: If you don't like chain italian restaurants you can try out Wheatfields. However, if you are very critical about your italian food, I would maybe think twice about coming. Food was mediocre, the wait was too long, but even though everything else was bad, staff was very good and quick with orders and requests. read more

The ricotta gnocchi pomodoro with chicken, may have been one of the best Italian dishes I have ever had. It wasn't huge, it was just enough. I have to say, I was disappointed. I had high hopes that this place would serve tasty pasta and good veggies considering their mantra of serving local ingredients and making homemade pastas. Unfortunately, it was nothing to write home about. My friend and I ended up here on Saturday night after the races at Saratoga. Because it was opening weekend, downtown was mobbed - throngs of people everywhere, places bursting at the seems with business and music. It was great to see the downtown so lively, but it meant that getting a meal was going to take some waiting. That was fine, we knew what we were getting into. After putting our name on the list an being told it was about a 20-30 minute wait, we were seated within that time on the outside veranda which was on the sidewalk. That was perfectly fine - we could people watch - hear some of the music from the nearby performers - all pleasant on a nice summer evening. Our server was really nice and helpful. We asked him for his suggestions (both of which we ordered) on the menu being completely unfamiliar with the restaurant. I asked about the caesar salad. I enjoy caesars, but wanted one that had a homemade dressing (which he said it was) and that contained anchovies. He said they could easily put anchovies on the salad (which they did - but which I was not told would cost me an extra $2 - obviously that isn't a lot of money, but you are seriously charging me for anchovies on a caesar salad?). My friend had a house salad which was fine. We went with two of his pasta recommendations - my friend with the pesto radiatori and me with the chicken rigatoni. The pesto radiatori was literally a small bowl of pasta with the pesto sauce. Nothing else. I guess I had thought there might be a vegetable or just something other than the pasta, but nope. My chicken rigatoni was more substantial because of the meat, and it had a nice spice, but the pasta was sticky and chewy and a lot of it was stuck together in clumps. The runner who brought out our food also said that our plates were super hot (carried the dishes with towels) which in some cases is just because the dishes are kept in a warming oven so as not to cool the food, or in other cases (as we suspect here) because they sat under the heat lamp in the kitchen way too long waiting to be brought out. I say it was the second, less desirable option, because the sauces were kind of stuck on the pasta in the way that when something warm and thick starts to set it gets less fluid and thickens and almost crusts over. Mine hadn't crusted yet, but it was on the way there. Sadly, the meal was mediocre and I definitely wouldn't suggest coming here unless other options in town are booked. Perhaps they do better when not so mobbed, but this was my one (and will be my only) time trying them out. read more

This is pretty good food. I think some dishes are a little pricey for what it is. I took a chance and got the scallops and Risotto. I think I expected that at $30 it would be a bit more "elevated," or special. There was nothing wrong with it though. It was very tasty. The risotto was creamy, and had some crunchy grilled veg in it, and the scallops were cooked just right. My girlfriend had pasta with a creamy sauce. The pasta here is made fresh. The sauce was a bit heavier than we would have expected, but was also very tasty. I think, for what it is, their prices could come down a bit to reflect the family-style,(rich )cooking and setting, as opposed to prices that reflect a more "fine dining" experience. But I'm still giving it 4 stars because the staff was so nice and the food was just very tasty, and the wine was very good and priced reasonably. read more

This is our second time dining at Wheatfields and we really enjoy it. Service has always been exceptional, when we dined as a couple and as a group with our toddler. Both our servers were great but tonight Theresa gave us a great recommendation about the linguini and clams which can sometimes be overwhelmed by garlic, but thankfully that was not the case at Wheatfields. Best place for happy hour in Saratoga, for my purposes. Buy one get one applies to every drink- alcoholic or not, top shelf, martinis, beer- everything. They have free cheddar and crackers at the bar and a good appetizer menu. The $5 pizza and the antipasti plate are a great deal. The happy hour crowd is older (50+), and it rarely gets loud- another plus if you ask me. But there are some younger couples that come in as well. If there isn't space at the bar for happy hour you can also sit at the nearby tables- you just have to go to the bar to order and pick up food. I have also been for dinner and while the fresh pasta was delicious, I don't think it was worth the price. Then again I normally feel this way about Italian! read more

We make the "pilgrimage" to Saratoga once a year and this is our go to place for dinner. Great service; very good food. August in Saratoga is very busy but you never feel rushed. Really nice atmosphere. Beet and goat cheese salad is very fresh; crab cakes are all crab; waitress helped with dinner. Pesto pasta with shrimp and scallops. Excellent. They are always willing to adapt the menu without hitting you hard for the changes. read more
