I've visited this truck twice and have had the following items: oyster po boy, big bold pork po boy, shrimp po boy, jambalaya, red beans & rice, and the beignets.
I started with the beignets. So good. Freshly fried and dunked in powder sugar, the outside was perfectly golden and crispy, while the insides were so soft and steamy. I was wearing dark clothes that day, and I ended up covered in powdered sugar.
The oyster po boy was love at first bite. Breaded and deep fried fresh oysters lined up on a soft, yet sturdy white bread stuffed with dressed lettuce and tomatoes. So delicious -- the smooth texture of the oysters combined with the crunch of the veggies and chewiness of the bread was perfect. The flavors are so fresh and well balanced. This is my favorite. I liked it so much I came back a second time to get another one, but alas, they sold out as I was waiting in the line that snaked through the lot.
Since I couldn't get my favorite po boy the second time, the bf and I opted to try the big bold pork and the shrimp po boy...in addition to a bowl each of the red beans & rice and jambalaya.
If I had just eaten the oyster po boy and beignets from this place, I would have given it five stars. However, the reason why I didn't give five stars was because of the red rice and beans. I found this dish to be kind of lopsided. The beans were too salty and too smokey. If perhaps there was a greater ratio of rice to beans, it would have helped to balance it out. The rice was also very soft. I'm not an expert on Creole food, but after about three bites, I wasn't too keen on finishing the rest.
The jambalaya, albeit tasty was also over-salted. I found it to distract from the natural flavors of the chicken, andouille sausage and shrimp.
The po boys I chose in place of the oyster were great, even if they weren't my favorite. I personally would seafood over land meat anytime, so my preferences are a bit biased. However, the pork in this instance was definitely more exciting than the shrimp. The pork is cooked in a heavy dark sauce with flavors that I can't identify, but know that I like. Thin slices of apple is then layered on the meat topped with a cole slaw...such a wonderful sandwich. I like my sandwiches large and complicated and this one surely was. The shrimp was prepared in the same fashion as the oyster, but the shrimp was a little bland and I wished I had a giant tub of aioli to dunk the sandwich in, but it wasn't bad by any means.
The food here is great, even if there are a few items on the menu that I would opt not to order my next visit. To top off the gastronomical experience, I get my Where Ya At Matt fix at the South Lake Union location, which is right next to a park, which is just the right place to sit and really enjoy the food. read more
