Whirlow's food was good pre-pandemic. Since then, however, it has really fallen. I was tipped off that they had a Spaghetti special on Thursday 2/19. I asked about the special ( at 3 PM) and the staff immediately started looking in the refrigerator for spaghetti. I was informed they were out. I wouldn't have wanted it anyway when I discovered that it would likely be cold and refrigerated, and heated in a microwave. Who wants cold spaghetti heated in a microwave at a restaurant? I chose the fish & chips for $18.99 instead. The fish had a noticeable frozen taste. The fries were unremarkable. The cocktail sauce served with the meal was ice cold. To be honest this review is more about the Tap room next door. So there are 28 Tap handles with an excellent selection of craft beers from all over California and a few from outside the State. The vibe is chill and the people are fantastic. There is a bit of a Cheers vibe but all are welcome here and most conversations are easy going but every now and again you will hear some political perspectives which is good like in a British Pub kinda way :) Highly recommended if you are a true fan of craft beer. We have been going to Whirlow's for years. It has been a staple on the Mile for quite some time. On our last visit it was about 6 pm on a Friday night and the place was empty. I guess there was not a band playing that evening though a few people were next door drinking at Taps. We ordered in a flash and received good customer service. 2 burgers along with sides and fountain drinks came up to $45. Kind of pricey for the portion sizes that we received. I wish they gave us more fries and onion rings. It was not the best of the best when it came to taste but the items that came out were made to order and fresh. We will return for the convenience. It's a far cry from what this place was years ago. That being said, it's still a decent place to eat. The staff were friendly. The food quality it's average; the burgers and onion rings are premade and appear to have been frozen. A little frustrating to "build your own salad". Now, you go to the register and tell them what you want as compared to the past when you could add add add on to your salad as you see it being made. If you want something simple and basic this is your place. I was there in the middle of the day and the atmosphere was quiet and laid back. I actually enjoy Whirlows create your own salad, however the quality isn't consistent. I've called to complain a couple of times and have spoken to the actual owners and they don't seem to care that a customer is unhappy Also the portions have gotten smaller, but the prices have gotten higher at least keep the portions the same if you're raising prices. my husband has gotten a sandwich and there is barely any meat. I keep saying I'm not coming back and because it's close to home I've come back but very rarely. Service and food was better before Covid. A big complaint is their inconsistent hours. The closing hours have changed multiple times and they often close earlier than the noted hours. Sometimes I go or call and they're either closed (before the noted closed times) or I have called to place an order, again before closing and am told they're closing early. Today I got there at 5:35/5:40 and although they were supposed to be opened until 5:50, the salad bar was shut down. Mind you closing time was 5:50. When I stated this I was told sorry we cleaned it early. It is very frustrating that they have a closing time, yet they start cleaning early, which is fine but Whirlows should still be ready to serve. Maybe you need to close earlier if you're not going to serve food until your closing time. Customer service definitely needs to be worked on, most of the time the employees don't smile and barely acknowledge you. When I asked the waitress, she asked me for my name. I gave her my name and she tells me we don't have an order for you. I said you took my order I gave you my name I even spelled it out for you. And then she asked me if my name was Liz and I told her that's not the name I gave you. She was able to find my order under the wrong name. The turkey drumstick was cooked too long causing it to be too dry. The mashed potatoes and Mac and cheese tasted like it was warmed up in a microwave. I've been here several times over the years and I've tried a few different items but I mostly like coming for the Build Your Own salad bar. They have a lot of options, a half or full size and you can add your choice of meat-I usually get the smoked tri tip. Other items I've tried are the bacon and blue cheeseburger-really good, the turkey and pesto aioli sandwich-also really good, the tamale pie-delicious and the bbq ribs-not so good. Their french fries are pretty standard but the buffalo fries are outstanding! Although I do think they are a little pricey for lunch, the customer service is efficient and friendly. The set up is cafeteria style and there are different sections depending on what you're ordering. Once you place your order everyone kind of just wanders into the single line to the cashier so it can seem a little disorganized. Overall though, it works. I decided to go with the California steak sandwich and sweet potato fries. It did not take long to receive my food and food was great! The sandwich had smoked tri-tip and was cooked perfectly! As for the fries, they were SOOOOO GOOOD. I love sweet potato fries and these were some of the best! They have a large seating area inside and also have patio seating outside. Both sandwiches were very fresh and tasty. The meats were freshly carved, the break was soft and fresh, and were good proportions of meat, sauce and bread. The buffalo fries had enough sauce and crumble toppings on it, tasted well seasoned, but prefer just a tad more crispy. Kiddo enjoyed the chicken tender meal. The kids meal was basic and as expected.
