WHEN: Sun @10am PARKING: At this time parking is often tricky, but we lucked out with a metered parking spot across the street. Also, metered parking on both Sundays and Holidays are free! I love what Whisper did to this location. The decor and furniture is absolutely classy and chic. Looks like there's plenty of seating, with additional ones on the 2nd floor (though I can't be sure it's open). While there is a waitlist system via yelp there, we were able to be seated before the rest of our party of 4 arrived. Looking at the menu, everything sounds booth fusion and rich/creamy. This made it hard to decide because everything sounded delicious! But we decided on: GOGI MORNING - $24 Beef bulgogi, caramelized onions, garic, green onion, lemon hollandaise, galbi sauce on a croissant base. To offset the richness, we chose the salad over the potatoes, which I was not bad. The bulgogi was fine, and as much as i love croissants, I think English muffin or even biscuits would have been a better choice. Also, both eggs are on top of one single croissant. But overall I enjoyed it. KIMCHI CARBONARA - $26 Kimchi, Bulgogi, Onion, Creamy white sauce, Spaghetti, Green onion, Grana Padano Cheese, served with 2 pieces of toasted foccacia. This was so good! I love that it comes with bread to dip in that yummy flavorful creamy sauce! You taste the flavors and spices of kimchi without having to deal with the spicines, it's its barely mild. I rec this, or get it for the table to share! MATCHA PANCAKE - $21 They didn't provide a description but I saw the table across from us order it and it looked good. It's pretty much pancakes with I'm guessing som matcha in the batter, topped with a matcha creamy/mousse-like sauce with candied pecans and tiny cuts of strawberries. I didn't even see the side of maple syrup but I felt it wasn't needed anyway. It was the right amount of sweetness. My only feedback is how boring it looked with the several bits of strawberries and tiny pieces of candied pecans. I wish the maple sauce was a sweet matcha topping. Oh and I did something I rarely did: order a drink. Reason is I can never pass up on a pandan drink and I once had a pandan and matcha drink and loved it. So I ordered: ICED PANDAN LATTE - $8 I added matcha for a dollar more. I also asked for no ice but they said they can lessen the amount of ice, but they didn't. It's okay I just took the ice out myself with my fork. Very yummy drink! While the food was food, my only gripe is that everyone's dishes came out at different times. Mine came out first, but didn't want to be rude and start eating. It was around 5minutes later that 2 others came out, but the 4th dish seemed like a long time before it came out. It felt weird that 3 of us got our food, but the 4th person still didn't get his. I suppose the GOGI MORNING required more time to make. At the end, our server told us that we get a free ice-cream if we wrote a yelp review. I said sure, and she asked how many and I said 2. As it turned out, we needed to write a review right then and there when she brought the ice cream out cuz she needed to snap a photo for proof. Turns out the ice cream was a store-bought little cup. I was hoping it was the ice-cream they serve with their Affogato. So yeah, ice cream was cheap and it was not worth it. I quickly wrote a review but did not post because it was just a couple of sentences! So here is my full review! Thanks for reading!
Cute brunch spot in San Mateo! Mentaiko cream seafood jjampong: 8.1/10! Seafood was cooked well, and I particularly enjoyed the squid. I did feel like it was a bit too acidic with the bell peppers and would enjoy the sauce more if it had a thicker consistency. Kimchi carbonara: 8.4/10! The sauce was creamy and delicious. I would recommend adding more kimchi and green onion to help cut through the richness of the sauce and the sweetness of the bulgogi meat. Matcha pancake: 9.1/10! The highlight of our visit. The whipped matcha cream was light with good notes of matcha and overall paired well with the pancake, the candied pecans, and sweet strawberries. Overall a great brunch spot and would come back to try the other dishes. Thank you to Nate for being a friendly and attentive server!
Came here on a Saturday early morning and got seated within 10 minutes. Me and my friends ordered family style to share everything. The interior was beautifully decorated and clean, and the service was good. The kimchi carbonara was our favorite dish we tried, very creamy and flavorful. We also really enjoyed the mango pancakes, they were fluffy and not too sweet with the toppings. We had the corn ribs, nothing special and would skip. The truffle wagyu tartar was also a let down, it had no taste at all.
We came out on a Saturday morning, and I was really surprised that there wasn't much of a wait! We added ourselves to the Yelp waitlist while we were parking and came in with our group of seven The food overall was really good, a bit on the heavier side. We got the really popular cast iron skillet which had really tasty rice. I also got a Gogi Benedict, which overall was really yummy, the eggs were jammy and the croissant below was really fluffy and sweet. Wasn't super croissant like though more like bread We also got the seafood beeping bop, which was tasty, but I had a little bit too much. He also got the Matcha pancake, which were actually really awesome!! super flavorful and With red beans that were crispy! Service was awesome, Seth was our server and he was super nice and attentive! We will be coming back again! A great thing was that it's pretty spacious inside so we brought two strollers and accommodate us as well
Really enjoyed brunch at Whisper! The space is beautiful with bright, natural lighting and a really nice aesthetic. Service was also fast and friendly. I made a brunch reservation ahead of time, which I'd recommend since I've heard it can get pretty busy. // Iced mango matcha latte Yummy and refreshing! The mango flavor wasn't too strong, so you could still taste the matcha. It was light with a nice creaminess and wasn't overly sweet. // Cast Iron Stone Axe Such a delicious protein-forward brunch option! The meat was juicy and tender, and the potatoes came out piping hot. Everything was flavorful and satisfying without feeling too heavy. The menu has so many interesting fusion options that it was honestly hard to choose what to order. So many other dishes looked amazing, and I already have a few I want to come back and try. Definitely will be returning!
I've been meaning to try this place for awhile. I came by for dinner on a Friday evening. Not to busy, able to get a table for 3 with minimal wait. We ordered the kimchi carbonara, dakjuk, gochujang chicken, and layered architecture (aka a burger). The kimchi carbonara was our favorite, good flavor. Then surprisingly the burger. The congee was good, but lacked a little flavor (not as good as the other two dishes), the fried chicken was average (had better at other places). I would come back to try their brunch.
I have been wanting to try Whisper for a bit now and finally was able to make some time to go! This Korean fusion place is fun! I had previously been in the space when it was the German place before, but Korean inspired fare? Yes please! Understood that Whisper is popular for brunch, we went for a dinner on a Friday night; brunch items are not all day unfortunately. FYI, they are a spot where your "full party must be present to be seated". It was pretty full but the wait wasn't too long, as I had made a quasi reservation (waitlist) beforehand. I loved the decor and the table settings. More "English tea time" than anything Asian inspired. Even our drinks were cute. (Strawberry lemonade and iced chai latte) Entrees are a little on the pricier side (upper 20s) and we asked for recommendations based on what we liked, items we got: Gochujang Fried Chicken Cast Iron Stone Axe Mentaiko Cream Seafood Jjambbong Nothing was overly spicy- I believe we asked more medium/mild when we could. All the items on the menu were pretty substantial, on the heavier side. But all in all it was a good place to finally try! *Note: They have a neighboring speak-easy downstairs. Such fun if you can score a reservation!
Great ambiance and brunch place. Kimchi carbonara was the star of the table. Everything else was just okay. Would recommend to try, come early so you don't need to wait. The cast iron dish was a bit bland however and would skip.
An interesting take on Korean fusion breakfast and brunch food. Glad they had the option to put yourself on the Yelp waitlist; we waited 30-40 minutes for a party of two on a Sunday. We started with the gogochung fried chicken appetizer; I thought the dish was a bit too sweet for my liking. I would pass on the bone marrow cioppino next time. I thought the tomato sauce was a little basic and wished it had a more Korean twist. The dish I would order again is the Mentaiko cream seafood jjambbong. The squid was cooked perfectly in the jjambbong, and I really enjoyed its flavors. Dishes are priced at $20-30 a dish, and you order through a QR code. I am interested in trying some of their other dishes, so I'll be back!

We came here for a Saturday dinner. Luckily Yelp allows you to make reservations and we were seated right away. I recommend making reservations as it got busy as the evening went on. My husband and I ordered the Gojuchang Fried Chicken and Kimchi Carbonara, whereas my friend ordered the Nacho Bulgolgi. They were all delicious. I would recommend family style - for me, the Kimchi Carbonara was on the rich side but my husband said he could have eaten the whole dish himself. The Gojuchang Fried Chicken had a nice sweet sauce and it was perfectly fried and stayed crispy amidst the sauce - well executed. Service was friendly and fast. The restaurant was bright and airy. We really enjoyed our meal and will definitely be back to try their brunch items. Parking could be a little tricky. There is a parking structure nearby but it was 95% full when we arrived. The parking gods however were kind to us and we found a spot on the top level even though the sign at the entrance stated that it was "full". Parking can be hit or miss but there is always the option of street parking.
Came recently to try out this place. Menu is mostly for brunch but also has an interesting fusion Korean + New American Comfort elements. Corn ribs have been on my radar to try for a while. Whisper's version is satisfying and very tasty. I would order this again. I also had a kimchi carbonara. It's creamy and has a slight tang/bite. Instead of the traditional pork cheeks, Whisper's version came with a very tender and tasty braised short ribs. There is no funky fermented kimchi taste at all. I actually crave this a day later. Highly recommended.
I've been wanting to try this place for breakfast and I finally got to. It did not disappoint! I love a good Asian fusion brunch spot and this is exactly that in the San Mateo area. If you're within 7 miles, you're able to add yourself remotely onto the waitlist, which is such a great option. Even though I arrived ahead of the estimated seating time, I just checked in with the host and they sat my party immediately. The menu is pretty extensive. We tried the mango and pandan matcha. They're definitely not known for their matcha, nor was it anything crazy, but I just needed my caffeine fix for the morning and this definitely hit the spot. The portions are pretty big. For the Cast Iron Stone Axe, I took leftovers home and that was essentially a second meal. The kimchi carbonara was also very creamy, although I wish it had a heartier protein. There were some thinly sliced bulgogi, emphasis on thin. Service wise, it does get pretty busy during brunch and lunch hours, so I feel like a lot of the servers were running around and not really paying attention when we wanted more napkins, our check, etc. But I can't fault them for that given how busy the whole restaurant was. Overall, I'm definitely interested in coming back to try some of the other options on the menu.
Came to Whispers for brunch on a Sunday at 12, and the place was packed. They also have a Yelp waitlist there. Just note that you won't be seated until your full party has arrived. I ordered the mango pancakes and a side of bacon. Sooo good! Light, fresh, and sweet. The side of bacon came with three thick slices. One of my friends wanted to order a burger, but the waiter told her all burgers are cooked well done and that she couldn't choose her preferred temperature. I thought that was a little weird. Another friend ordered the mango pancakes, but they never came out, even after multiple reminders to the staff. Overall, the experience was great for a first timer. The staff was friendly and kept our waters refilled throughout the meal. read more

Server Nate was great, super attentive without hovering. He refilled my water a few times without me even asking. The crab Eggs Benedict was on point and the sauce tasted fresh. The potatoes, purple, regular, and sweet, had a light crisp on the outside and were soft inside. The crème brûlée French toast was nicely balanced and not overly sweet. It was pretty loud when I walked in, but once I sat down and the food came, I forgot about the noise. read more

I was in the area so i decided to treat myself to brunch. I didn't wait long but I had first placed myself on the yelp waitlist before they said it wasn't working. I was seated right away when they announced they weren't using the waitlist. I ordered a pandan Matcha iced latte and the gogi morning benedict. Both were very good, i cleaned my plate. Staff were friendly and attentive. The wait for my items was not too long. The space is so cute and decorated fun and eclectic. The furniture was actually really nice. It's been a while since a brunch spot has impressed me! read more

Service was amazing as per usual, the manager and all the staff are really friendly and welcoming. This is my 2nd time here and I really love coming with a group. The interior overall is so cozy but modern at the same time, perfect for pictures!! Overall I would say the pastas are 7/10. My favorite was the mango pancakes (8/10) and the gochujang chicken (7.5/10). The pancakes were fresh, soft, and topped with fresh cream and mangos (not too sweet either). The chicken was also pretty affordable $15 and was a nice appetizer. read more

We went for dinner on a Saturday night and were immediately seated. If you're coming from afar, you can also join the waitlist on the Yelp app. We ordered the corn ribs, espresso martini & kimchi carbonara. The kimchi carbonara is my fav dish from here & is definitely a must try. It's so creamy! We were dipping the corn ribs and the bread in the sauce. Corn ribs were good apps. Nothing mind blowing. The espresso martini, my fiancé ranked it his second favorite & wished it was more creamy. Parking is street meter. After 6pm it's free. Can be difficult to find parking on weekends. Would come back again for the kimchi carbonara!! it lives in my mind rent free. read more

Had a really enjoyable meal at Whisper in San Mateo and our server Brianna made the whole experience even better. She was warm, attentive, and genuinely helpful without being overbearing. She checked in at just the right times, answered our questions about the menu with clear recommendations, and made sure everything ran smoothly. It's clear she cares about making guests feel welcome. The Korean-fusion brunch (and dinner) concept is creative and the space is bright and inviting. We'll definitely be back -- and we'll be hoping Brianna is our server again! read more

Perfect vibes for a girl brunch. I've done so 2 weekends back to back already and everyone has been happy. Just be sure to make a reservation unless you don't mind waiting 35-45 minutes on a weekend. The menu has variety, service is good, and food is tasty. Fresh squeezed orange juice available is the cherry on top. Huge wait time ever since they opened. Our family had a reservation and still had to wait after we checked in. Amazing decor inside and even the utensils had a unique touch to it. Great food selection for brunch - Korean/American fusion. Overall, I would like to come back if the wait time wasn't so long. Truffle oyster - expected to be creamier - more watery. Corn ribs - mild flavor Kimchi carbonara - probably my favorite dish! Very delicious and flavor was rich. Creamy and savory! We even saved the leftover sauce to mix with other noodles afterwards. Fried chicken and waffles - felt like just every other place Latin sunrise omelette - it was good! Very light and healthy. I really enjoyed eating the purple yam with it. read more
My family came here for Father's Day with a reservation. Considering how busy they were, we had a great time. The space is very nice with an additional upstairs area. We unfortunately did have to wait a while for half of our dishes to come out. However, the staff were very accommodating and consistently came to update us on our items. We were told that two of their chefs called out sick so it was understandable. The food was delicious. We got a variety of items but my favorite was the kimchi carbonara. Definitely recommend it. I would love to try their breakfast menu one of these days. read more

Saw this place in my IG feed, and so since I was in the area, I decided to try it. Came here for dinner so I was not able to order The Omelets Series, The Morning Edition, and Benedict Studies. I ordered the Sweet & Salt. It was a little funky looking with one medium sized chicken on top and three smaller ones underneath it. But the taste was good! The croffle was cooked perfectly. The chicken was nicely coated and tender. The inside of the restaurant was aesthetically nice. Great atmosphere. read more

Had such a great experience at Whisper! The food was amazing everything we tried was rich, flavorful, and beautifully presented. The kimchi carbonara was easily my favorite. It was creamy, savory, and packed with flavor. Definitely something I'd come back for. The restaurant itself is also beautiful. I loved the decor and overall atmosphere it has a really nice, modern setting while still feeling comfortable and inviting. My favorite dish was the Miso Ssamjang Bossam. The pork belly was so tender! My mom saw this place on social media and wanted to come and try it. Went on a Friday afternoon, relatively busy for midday on a weekday. Food was good not great, aesthetically pleasing for IG pics and all that but flavors of each dish we got didn't stand out massively. Crème Brûlée French Toast was a couple pieces of French toast with custard and a lil bit of torched sugar on top. Skillet was good but sort of tasted flat? Like it was all of one flavor across the whole skillet, very savory. Rice, veggies?, meat all tasted the same. Was looking for more contrast, even more than what the tomatoes brought to the skillet. My mom enjoyed the chicken and waffles but stated that if we come back we will try the ube pancakes instead. There's a parking lot a couple blocks down and street parking is available. read more

New Korean fusion brunch spot in downtown San Mateo. Added our group to the virtual waitlist. Was 26th in line. Wait was about 40 minutes. The restaurant has a second floor but the tables are pretty cramped. They're also open for dinner. The portion is pretty huge. Definitely shareable. I ordered the chicken and waffles for something savory and sweet. It was a good amount. My friend got the kimchi pasta and it was really good. Also ordered an ube latte and mango matcha. Food: Kimchi pasta: Very good level of cream and spice. Not overwhelmingly creamy which is what I prefer. I really liked the green onions inside. I'm very glad it also comes with focaccia bread to balance it out. I absolutely demolished that plate. Sweet potato: Great crisp. No flop. Good seasoning. I really liked how they were waffle fries. Many restaurants don't usually do sweet potato waffle fries. Ambiance: Marble tables, nice hints of forest green, fun decorations, and I like the baroque/rococo-inspired utensils. Great lighting. Not white bright but a nice mix of strong and warm yellows. Great place for couples, families, and friends. Service: Although a busy night, Mya had very nice energy: she was bright, welcoming, and she made the place feel cozy to enter. Mya was amazing and very attentive: I like sitting next to my girl instead of across and she was very accommodating :) She checked on us and made sure we were enjoying our night. Kimchi carbonara and gochujang fried chicken are a must try! Think creamy pasta with a subtle flavor of kimchi and sweet and crispy Korean fried chicken. Cast iron stone axe was a bit of a let down, though the wagyu finger rib was tender, the flavor combination wasn't that balanced in my opinion. Crème brulee french toast tasted expected, the mango pancake next to us looked yum, so might try that next time. Wait time was about 30 minutes for a party of 5 on a Saturday afternoon. QR code is available for ordering, but server was always around to check in on us as well. Ambiance was bright, lively, and reasonably loud. Decent spot for catching up with friends! read more
Came for dinner on a Tuesday and the restaurant had plenty of open tables available. Kimchi carbonara was fantastic - not too spicy, creamy, flavorful, and the spaghetti was good. Loved that it came with bread too. Mango Scallop Ceviche was okay, nothing out of the ordinary. The Marrow Coast Cioppino was meh. I wouldn't get this again. The shrimp was kinda small and tough, not fresh/crunchy. Flavor was a bit acidic. Bone marrow was fine. Wish this dish came with more bread because there wasn't anywhere enough to eat the rest of the dish. Would love to come back and try their brunch dishes, but definitely not worth a long wait based on what we tried for dinner. read more

Great place for brunch. Make sure you have a reservation because it gets busy. Our server was attentive and did everything all 15 of us wanted. The cortado is worth a try but if you like sweet this is not for you. I had the, miso pasta with pork belly. Rich sauce, well cooked noodles with a hint of sweetness. The bread on the side was a nice addition to dip in the sauce. I would come back to try something else. read more
Decided to come try this place on a Sunday, we put our name on the list and started 25th in line. We waited about 40 minutes after checking in, and told us to stay nearby in case they call our names early(did not happen). I'm not hating it's a Sunday. Would go again! Once we went in the place was super cute naturally everywhere, and for dinner there is a speakeasy downstairs. After waiting we were taken care of really well. Since we were hungry we ordered right away! Two ordering options, with the QR Code or someone will stop by. When the food all got there, the wait was worth it!! Our server kept checking in on us. What I tried: Matcha Pancakes(for the table) -- Soo matchay, and not too sweet!! Would get again. I love a fluffy pancake. I forgot what it's called but I chose my own plate: The bacon was nice and crispy. Scrambled eggs were perfect. What stole the show was the sweet potato waffle fries!! I wasn't expecting them to be waffle fries, but they exceeded expectations so crispy. The focaccia was alright. read more
Finally was able to make it to Whisper for brunch! My friend and I shared the Gojuchang fried chicken appetizer, while she had the Gogi morning (bulgogi eggs Benedict), and I had the Kimchi Carbonara. Everything was so good! The chicken was sweet with a little kick of spice, and the carbonara was creamy and flavorful, also with a nice kick of spice. It had pieces of bulgogi in it as well which was a great addition to help balance out the dish. Restaurant was packed the whole time we were there. Didn't love how close the seats are to the other tables but totally get it. I recommend putting your name down on the yelp waitlist as I saw a bunch of people waiting outside the later in the day it got. Service was also great, and very attentive. read more
The food here is great! I came here Sunday morning with my friend and 4 year old/newborn and we were so lucky that despite the estimated 15 min wait, we were seated in 2 min! It was pretty busy here though. The server was around to catch here and there. We ordered the corn ribs for my oldest and I got the sea and green benedict and iced ube latte. My friend got the custom breakfast dish and got the chicken, sourdough bread, with salad. We thought everything was delicious. We have been to many fusion Korean/Thai brunch places and usually they aren't the best and overrated, but the food here was actually really good! I would come again here next time! read more

Cool vibes and friendly staff situated in the former Wursthall space. This place has been drawing some seriously long lines, so I figured it was worth checking out. We arrived around 10:30 AM on a Sunday and had added our name to the waitlist in advance, which made the process easy. By the time we got there, the wait was only about five minutes. The food was visually impressive and beautifully plated, but I found some of the flavors a bit lacking. The kimchi carbonara, in particular, was not quite for me. The bulgogi was noticeably sweet, which ended up making the entire dish taste sweeter than I would have liked. The steak and potatoes were decent and cooked well enough, but they felt underseasoned and lacked the flavor needed to make the dish memorable. Overall, it came across as a fairly basic steak-and-potatoes plate. While the meal did not completely live up to the hype for me, I would be willing to give it another try. The menu has plenty of other options, and it is entirely possible that we simply did not order the restaurant's strongest dishes. I had a wonderful lunch at Whisper today. It's clearly a popular spot for the weekend for brunch/lunch--I joined the waitlist and waited about 45 minutes, but we were seated shortly after checking in. The service was excellent. Our waitress was so helpful and took the time to explain the menu thoroughly. She even gave us a heads-up that the portions are generous and perfect for sharing. We ordered the kimchi beef carbonara and the mango pancake, paired with a mango matcha latte and a hojicha latte. As our server noted, the kimchi beef carbonara wasn't spicy at all, which made it a perfect meal for my 3-year-old toddler to enjoy as well. She absolutely loved both dishes! Also, as a parent, I really appreciated that the restroom was clean--it's a very kid-friendly environment. Everything was delicious, and the service made the whole experience seamless. Was looking up brunch places to meet to discuss fundraising and ended up finding Whisper! My friend and I always joke about how we take each other on the best dates (sorry not sorry to our partners) because we always find such beautiful places to eat or chat at. This didn't miss the mark either. Pay attention to the decor if you visit and there's some fun things if you look around. Beatiful interior indeed. We came in and added ourselves to the waitlist which was not long at all- though I do recommend joining waitlist on Yelp just in case. Many people came after us and wait time jumped from 15 minutes wait to an hour. Our host, Fina was very patient and kind. Definitely a busy place but she made the experience feel perfectly paced and light. We ordered: Ube Latte - my friend's drink- she loved it but didn't get her opinion on score. We needed coffee and it was a delightful fix, Mango Matcha - Can't go wrong especially now that mango season is here!! Very refreshing. Oyster Mushroom w/ Baguette - 8/10 - I think I loved this bite the most. Really great appetizer, it was a little salty BUT that's why you eat it with the bread. Stone Axe - The MEAT was cooked perfectly. Still juicy, hot, and flavorful. Potatoes were good but those are pretty standard. 7/10- but the meat 8.7/10- that was a really good first bite of this dish. Nori Pasta - Creamy pasta but sauce was a little more wet than what we were hoping, But we're also thick sauce kinda people so that could just be us. Nonetheless, it was yummy, 7/10. We also ordered to go for some friends. Mango Pancake - Our friend has a sweet tooth and this hit the spot. Gochu Fried Chicken - Good crunch. 6.5/10. Whisper took over the space of Wursthall (RIP, I miss you), so I was excited to finally see what this new spot was all about. I'm usually a bit skeptical of fusion foods and sometimes find the combinations can feel a little shoehorned together, but the Kimchi Carbonara worked surprisingly well! The tang from the kimchi was the perfect counter to cut right through the richness of the heavy carbonara sauce. The Shoyu Butter Corn Ribs were good and fun to eat. Pro-tip, make sure you have some floss handy afterwards. As for the Gochujang Fried Chicken, the batter was crispy. The sauce definitely skews more sweet than heat. If you've ever had yangnyeom chicken, the flavor profile is very similar to that! We shared these three dishes between the two of us and it was the perfect amount of food. The service was super efficient and the food flew out of the kitchen. The plateware was fun too. A great new addition to add to your Bay Area brunch rotation! read more
