I've been wanting to try Shang Dumpling since it's new. Sharing the space with HiroNori ramen the left side and Shang is on the right side. There was a little wait on a Sunday night at 7:15. Service was nice and quick. All the food came out in timely order. Faves were all the xlb and dumplings. The skin isn't too thick and good amount of soup/filling inside. The chicken wings were good too. Crispy and good flavor. Small portion for the green beans and stir fried noodles though. Prices are reasonable for xlb and dumplings. Pretty solid new dumpling restaurant entry for downtown San Mateo The xlb was definitely a stand out being juicy, flavorful and noticeably fresh. Following nearby table trends I tried the pan fried pork buns - although I've never favored them as much as xlb they were good. Portions felt a little light for the price - particularly the fried rice and olive green bean (fyi very olive forward flavor). I'm not sure what makes their food Shanghai cuisine- perhaps I ordered the wrong dishes but everything tasted pretty typical for a dumpling restaurant. The restaurant itself is on the smaller side and from what I've seen tends to crowd fast.

We came on a Sunday night and waited a little bit to get seated. They were pretty busy. We were asked right away if we wanted hot tea or water. Food came relatively quickly. We decided to do family style and tried a few dishes. Everything was pretty good. If I had to rank, I like the pan- fried pork buns the most, then the soup dumplings, then dumplings. They did a good job locking the broth in for pan fried pork buns and soup dumplings. Make sure you bite into it carefully so you don't burn your mouth. Chicken wings were crispy. Stir fried thick noodles were chewy. We would like to come back and try other dishes.

Shang Dumpling's dim sum dishes are as described to me - delightful and delicious. (Like that alliteration?) Service is friendly but brisk as it must be given the restaurant's popularity during a lunch or dinner rush. There are around 11 tables in a small space that also includes the kitchen and prep area. Bonus! A diner can watch the dumpling preparation behind glass as you wait to be seated. I ate here for lunch sitting alone but truthfully the dumplings here are best shared with a group and eaten family style for variety and ease of sampling multiple dishes. My Shanghai pork soup dumplings had that thin soft dough wrapper found in the freshest dumplings with a tasty and piping hot soup and meat filling when they arrived at the table. My pork and shrimp sue mai was also juicy and excellent. Yum! A suggestion for the owner-it might be good to offer a lunch sampler plate of your freshest and fastest moving dumplings for those lunch time loners (like me today!). But given the obvious priority on fresh preparation I understand if "samplers" don't fit this model. A well deserved five stars!

I'm a bit confused on the style/region of Chinese cuisine here. There's a huge Shanghai photo on the wall (like floor to ceiling sized), though the staff speak Cantonese. Friendly and fast service btw. One thing for certain is that the XLB are solid - prob the most soup and least skin ratio on an xlb I've had in the Bay Area. Good texture. The beef noodle soup was good and didn't have a lot of msg (I wasn't sleepy or thirsty after) but idk what kind of beef noodle soup it was. No sauerkraut. Noodles were thinner and almost ramen esque? Beef super tender tho. Would come back and try the dumplings.

New chinese restaurant at San Mate Downtown. This is the third restaurant that occupy this space as far as I remember. The layou doesn't change from previous restaurant as I recall. It is nice and clean decoration.wit kind of open kitchecn but separated by glass screen. We got seating right away. The menu is not overwhelming. It has appetizer, dumpling, XLB, fried bun, meat, dimsum, seafood, veggie, fried rice. We ordered pork XLB, Sichuan spicy wonton, and beef and mushroom fried rice. Food was ready pretty quickly. Both xlb and beef mushroom fried rice are yummy. The xlb skin is thin and the liquid and meat are good. The beef mushroom fried rice is very unique. I cannot stop eating it. This is the first time I have this combination. The sichuan spicy wonton is also yummy. It is not too numbing. Overall it was a nice lunch and for sure will be back next time to try other stuff.

Great new spot! Their soft opening is busy, so be prepared to wait if you go during peak hours. Interior is modern, clean, spacious. There's a glass window so you can see the kitchen cooking. We ordered a ton of items; pan fried dumplings, XLB, truffle fried rice, laksa, chicken wings, etc. Everything was great. Our least favorite, interestingly, was the pan fried dumplings - not enough meat and the bun was too thick. Service was fast and attentive. Prices could be a bit lower but nothing egregious.

We had a lovely weekday lunch at Shang Dumpling, a welcomed new addition to the downtown San Mateo food scene. They had opened 3/18/26 and are currently in soft opening. The restaurant's interior is brightly lit and features a good number of tables. A large photograph of Shanghai adorns the main wall. We truly appreciated the helpful tips and the overall positive atmosphere provided by the service. The Shanghai soup dumplings (aka xlb) were impressive! There's 6 to an order, but bigger than what we've seen at other places. What's particularly impressive is the amount of tasty soup in each dumpling; the dumpling held together well too. We learned from our wait staff that each xlb is made-to-order, which could mean longer wait times when they are busy. We came during late lunch on a weekday so it wasn't a problem. The other stand-out was the baked char siu bao; it had come out of the oven not long ago and was recommended to us. They were good: great balance of fillings and bun, and warm buns are always good! I wish they had kept it a bit warmer though. Other dishes were good too but it's the xlb we will be returning for. We were told the beef noodle soup and laksa are also popular so we might try one of those next time.

Stopped in and the Xiao long bao was s the stand out of the meal. Thin skin, tons of soup, and they held together like pros. Easily the thing I'd come back for. Baked pork buns were great as well -- crisp snow crust top, soft bun, solid filling. Pan‑fried buns were good too, just not on the same level as the XLB. Garlic cucumber was basic and did its job, nothing more to say here. The din tai fung ones are still the standard. Service was friendly, staff had good recs, and the space is bright and clean with an open kitchen. Great addition to the downtown dining scene! Already planning a return trip, and the Xiao long bao are a guaranteed reorder.

My coworker and I stopped in for lunch during their soft opening. It was pretty busy and we were seated quickly. You can see the kitchen behind glass when you walk in. We were so hungry we ordered so many dumplings. The mala beef shank was nice and spicy. The garlic cucumber was good, but we liked the spicy mala sauce that we soon put the cucumbers in with the shanks. The mini pan fried pork buns were tasty, though not a lot of soup, as expected. The shrimp, chicken and chive dumplings were well seasoned and were my favorite out of all the dishes. Siu mai was good with a big shrimp on top. The Shanghai pan-fried pork buns came last and were perfectly prepared. Right amount of soup inside, well fried bottom without being overcooked, and very tasty. I did wish they had a little more ginger for us, but I'll just ask for more next time. This is a great dumpling option on 3rd. It's very casual so I'm looking g forward to dropping in for more work lunches and dinners.

We were walking in downtown San Mateo and stumbled on this spot. We're always looking for new XLB spots and were very pleasantly surprised with the quality! Service was incredibly fast and the food, even though made-to-order, came out in a timely manner as well. Very clean inside with plenty of natural lighting. What we ordered: -Baked BBQ Pork Buns: (the only dish that didn't seem made to order since it wasn't super warm). the crust was SO crispy and flavorful. there was a good ratio of filling to bun. one of my favs -Truffle seafood fried rice: loaded with shrimp, calamari and scallops that were all super bouncy. mixed with some carrots, peas and eggs to give it some nice veggie balance. the truffle flavor was strong throughout! -Pork XLB: so delicately made. the wrapper was super thin and the pork filling had a great texture and flavor. it was bursting with soup and honestly, would say it's one of our favorite XLBs in the Bay! -Shanghai Pan-fried Pork Buns: came out the coolest display. A bit disappointed with this one after all the other delicious dishes. The bottom wasn't too crispy and the wrapper was a big thick. still good but not as strong of a dish. We will definitely be coming back!

Quick take: Everything is good! First time here during their soft opening. Service is very attentive, fast, and friendly. Ordered the jellyfish and seaweed salad, pork and napa cabbage dumplings, crab and pork XLB, and the XO sauce noodles. I loved every dish! The meat inside all the dumplings were delicious. The XLB juice/soup is very flavorful. The restaurant is very loud. It's a festive bustling vibe. So not a quiet romantic place. Definitely recommend this place!

They are still soft opening, but dinner time already full, we walk in see a lot of cute boas decor, clean and bright setting. Restaurant not very big so you can easily see xlb in progress. Welcoming and friendly staffs, we got seated and staff members took our orders. #1 favor today is the made to order- original pork XLB, skin is thin, meat is well seasoned is good and very juicy. - we ordered a 2nd after we finish. Not sure if our most recent XLB in Southern California was bad make us extra happy for this favorful XLB. I did see other reviews with maybe better then ding tai fung #2 Green bean w/ salted olive it's very favorful no green (grassy favor) but the beans are not super soft, not super salty even with the olive. #3 sichuan spicy wontons. The wonton is more like Hong Kong style wonton, it has shrimp and pork inside kind of big it is favors, first bite not spicy but the Sichuan pepper will attack you after. I think I prefer smaller wonton We also ordered pan fried pork buns it's good too is soft bottom is crispy but the dough a little thick it is very juicy and pork favorful. Hor Goe Shrimp Dumpings, it's average but it's more expensive then most dim sum restaurant. Braised beef noodle soup is very bland not as much favor as everything else, noodle thin type. Milk pudding rabbits are really good. Not overly sweet, not too soft just perfect texture with a little coconut taste.

The roasted pork and soy sauce chicken were standout dishes for me -- flavorful, juicy, and nicely presented. The truffle fried rice was also surprisingly good and packed with flavor. Only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 was that service slowed down once the restaurant got busy, and some dishes felt a bit expensive. We tried the pork shrimp siu mai, sichuan seafood dumpling, butter seared lava bao, palette XLB sampler. To be truthful, nothing really stood out. The dim sum was solid but not memorable. For example, for the Palette Xia Long Bao, and rice noodles. I probably couldn't have tell the difference between them in a blind taste test. All tasted kind of similiar. I couldn't detect any black truffle in the squid ink xiao long bao. The pork shrimp siu mai tasted like what i would get at your average dim sum take out place in Chinatown. The rice noodles were a little too think --could be made a little thinner. The lava bao was a little too pasty. Should flow a little move like lava.

If you love views and aviation and dim sum, this is the place to go. Arrived around 9:20AM on a Saturday morning and there was no line. Keep in mind that if you do plan to celebrate a holiday, such as Mother's Day here, come EARLY. The lines will be long and you also want to ensure you get a parking spot. Parking can get really crazy and the spots are tight. I would not recommend driving a car in which you care if someone dings it. There is limited street parking outside but you will have to walk and jaywalk across a semi-busy street. My tip is to come early and park close to the PARKING LOT EXIT if you can, NOT the restaurant. If it's a crowded day, you'll thank me later. Anyways, parking lot aside, the food is pretty good. I would definitely get the Crispy BBQ pork bun. That one is always yummy. Other dishes are sort of up to your taste buds. The process is really easy with menus in which you mark what you want and then hand it over to one of the waiters/waitresses.
