Finding the right hair stylist is not an easy feat. I have actually gotten up from a stylist's chair and run out of the salon in a panic even before she'd put the scissors to my hair just because her own choice of hair made me nervous. That all changed the minute I walked into this East Village salon and met Heidi. She's awesome and always does exactly what I want. The first time she cut my hair was the first time IN MY ENTIRE LIFE that I loved a new cut immediately. The atmosphere is really chill and cozy, you can sip on wine while they snip away yr dead ends, and they play good music (sometimes better than others, depending on whose ipod is in rotation). This is the only place I've ever had my hair cut in New York, and as long as Heidi is still here, I'll keep coming back. Plus, everyone I've met there is so awesome that I'd probably trust them by default. You usually need to make an appointment a few weeks in advance, and a cut is about $70. It's worth every penny. I woke up in a funk yesterday. My bangs just weren't working and had to be pinned back, my hair was too long, had too many split ends and without a flat iron generally looked horrible. This was my first (and last) time getting a hair cut here. I have very long & straight hair and just wanted a basic trim, with long layers in the front. I decided to go with a "junior stylist" because I wanted something simple, and with a price of $80 I figured they wouldn't let kids play with scissors, but they do. He forgot to trim the length of my hair, and just massacred it. It looked like a donkey had chewed on it, and he had no idea what he was doing. One side was longer than the other, and he kept twisting my hair? as if to hide how choppy it looked. I'm still looking for the right hair salon in New York City and was amazed at the unanimous 5-star reviews that Yelpers gave this place, so I was really excited to give it a try. So I'll be the first in a while to put up a non 5-star review post: I didn't feel completely 5-star satisfied with my outcome. Everyone who works there was indeed very nice. My stylist made very good conversation which made it an enjoyable experience. The cut and blowout looked great the day it was done. I've waited a while to post my review to see how the hair grew out and such. In the end, I think my haircut was satisfactory but pretty unremarkable. There are definitely more expensive places than Whistle, but it's not that cheap either. I'm somewhat price conscious -- willing to pay a lot for something great and inspired, but the actual haircut outcome was pretty much the same as other cheaper places I've been to in NYC. I'm not sure whether or not it's good enough to go back to on the merits of just having a nice stylist alone or if I'll continue shopping around. read more

When the salon I went to closed, I panicked. Lucky for all, she ended up at Whistle. Whistle is a great salon. Everyone is super friendly and its a relaxing atmosphere. But the best part about it is Lizzie O! Lizzie has been cutting my hair for the past few years. An appointment with her almost feels more like catch-up time with an old friend. She's a total sweetheart and an amazing stylist - I am always getting compliments on my cut. Sometimes I bring in a pic of what I want and she gets it every time - other times I say go nuts, and I'm always happy with the results. Third time's a charm! Whistle was my third attempt since moving to NYC to get a decent haircut. And by 'decent' I mean 'fabulous'. When I checked in for my appointment, they took my coat and offered me some wine (nice touch!). Then I was introduced to Tom and we sat down to talk over what kind of a cut he would do. I had come in with some ideas for what I wanted, but I was also really looking for some good advice. Tom asked me questions about how this new hairstyle would fit with my figure, my proportions, my lifestyle, my career, and my aspirations. I was really impressed that he took the time to get to know me and that he considered so many factors when making the decision. He made me feel at ease, and did an expert job cutting and styling my wayward locks into a sleek angled bob with kickass bangs. I have found my new hair salon! Everything about my experience at Whistle was perfect (and I promise I can be a tough cookie.) First off, the salon, itself, is really cute and everyone was very welcoming. Really, everyone. They make you feel right at home (and when you're getting a significant amount of hair cut, a welcoming atmosphere makes all the difference.) The man who washed my hair pre-cut was so sweet and made sure I was as comfortable as possible (as did my stylist, Heather, but we'll get to that in a second.) Now to the cut. So, I've been a self-proclaimed Rapunzel since, well, forever, but, you know, things change and Rapunzel is dead and I wanted a long-ish bob. I brought in a reference photo of what I wanted and showed it to Heather. As corny as this next sentence sounds, I'm going to say it: not only was she willing to do exactly what I wanted, but she was genuinely enthusiastic about it. She gave me styling tips along the way, asked questions about my hair care routine and answered all of my questions. And, she really took her time to make sure I was happy with everything! All of these traits are super difficult to find in a hairstylist and this is why Heather really stands out. First visit to Whistle, and I was apprehensive--- I'd read good reviews but was still nervous. But sure enough, everyone at Whistle was gracious and courteous. As soon as I walked in, I was asked (by Katherine) she could take my coat, and if i wanted a drink (water and white wine for me, even if it was 11 AM). The general vibe was relaxed, no pulsing music. Tom was my hairdresser, and he did not disappoint. I did tell him what I wanted, so that made things easier, but I saw what he did for my friend and she looked great after. What a charming, top-notch salon. I had to have a major color change, specifically from solid, very light blonde, to warm caramel brunette. After a disappointing consultation at a famous salon uptown, I came across Whistle via a Yelp search. I dialed the number to request a consultation and a very pleasant, polite voice answered. He was so accommodating and told me I could walk in for a consultation. When I got there, I noticed a woman with amazing hair walking out and wanted to know who she had seen. Enter Dyanne aka miracle worker (at least in my case) Though she was very booked, she managed to find a spot for me later in the day. She worked some magic on my hair, transforming it from Barbie blonde to a beautiful, healthy brunette, with low and highlights. I could not have been more pleased and remain very grateful for the work she did. Don't waste your time with other salons. This place is the best. read more

Last night, Tom at Whistle gave me the gift of bangs -- a gift I was always scared to ask for because I have curly hair. For years I've suffered wracking bouts of bang-envy of my straight-haired friends, never thinking it possible for me to sport a fringe, because let's be honest: no one wants anything on their face befitting the description "short and curlies". I never broached the subject with past stylists; for some reason, I didn't feel like I'd trust them if it wasn't their idea. When Tom mentioned bangs as an alternative to a standard shape-up of my overgrown shrub-like 'do, I decided to go for it, equal parts trepidation and excitement enclosing my heart like a vise. (OK, that's a little dramatic, but I was nervous. And intrigued. The last time I had bangs was when I was 5, before adolescence and the onset of the uninvited natura-perm.) I took off my glasses, rendered virtually blind, and let Tom go to work. I'm not gonna lie, I actually do like my hair. But I am also indecisive, and have probably done the equivalent of beating the crap out of my poor mane during the past 10 years of my life. It's not destroyed, but it's very long, kind of dry, and more than a little confused about what color it is. So one day last week I decided to throw caution to the wind, abandon my "award-winning" ego maniac stylist in Staten Island, and see if I couldn't find someone in the letter district who could give me some quality hair treatment. I told them my situation on the phone, and met Aaron, my stylist on Sunday. I was delightfully assuaged, and surprised by the fact that this man was going to leave no stone unturned when it came to learning about the history of my hair. He wanted to know about the natural tendencies of my hair, how I've treated it over the past few years with regard to color, highlight, treatments, cuts and styles, and what exactly I had in mind "artistically" going forward. What? I didn't even know stylists asked you questions like that. Forget stylist, this guy is a scientist. On the real, though, he did a really good job on my hair. It actually came out different than I envisioned, but in a better way. If you're looking for someone to save your hair, go to Whistle! Ask for Aaron. Having very thick Asian hair, finding a stylist who is capable of (1) handling a large volume of hair and (2) shaping the hair in such a way that it does not look like complete crap within 6 weeks of cutting has always been a difficult task for me. I had lived in New York almost a year and tried 2 or 3 different salons before I finally decided to go to Whistle. When I finally got to Whistle, Heather took one look at my hair and told me she would rather re-shape my hair while it was dry because of its volume. I have only ever had my hair cut while wet, so I was initially skeptical. At the end of the appointment, my hair looked great! Heather was not only able to handle the volume of my hair, but she was able to give me a cut that has grown out extremely well. I really do love this place. I just came out of there, Ray cut my hair. He is amazing and I will request him again. He knew exactly what to do with my overly dry, fine and a bit too long hair. He gave me a great and manageable style that fits with my running/triathlon training lifestyle! I of course wish the prices were better, but I guess the overhead of an E.Village location is what causes the high prices. But in the end it's totally worth it. I wish I had had haircuts like this when I was growing up.. got my first cut here on Oct 30 and followup bangs trimmed for free this week... they know how to cut curly hair, and for the price they give you a haircut that will grow with you for quite some time... I came home feeling gorgeous (locks locks locks) neverending and side-swept bangs that looked edgy and cool. I thought the highest layer was a little too high during the cut, but as it's growing out I'm not finding that it's a problem at all. on the contrary, it's flowy and quite natural looking. highly recommended! read more

I have never. EVER. Been so happy with my hair in my entire life. As I am writing this review I am running my fingers through my hair, unable to believe that it was cut so brilliantly just last night. I can't stop looking at mirrors or looking away from reflected surfaces on the street (dang New York, I never realized how many storefronts are reflective!) Around the second week of April I called Whistle to make an appointment for a much needed cut and color. The receptionist - who was so nice and informative - told me they were booked until the end of April but to call back after May 1st when more appointments would open up. I felt sure that this was the right place to go to, so i did indeed wait and call back. I'd never been here before but the woman assured me that Aaron would take very good care of me. Aaron is a hair GENIUS. He looks at his craft as an art form and thusly is able to bring out the most beautiful attributes and facets of everyone's individual hair. My last haircut had been disastrous - my "stylist" (using that term loosely) had razored my hair into this weirdly layered asymmetrical cut that left my hair damaged, splitting halfway up, and in three ratty layers. I also shaved part of my head last year, so those chin-grazing pieces simply added to the mess that I called a hairdo. I cannot stress enough how bad of a place my hair was in - I was beginning to think that if I wanted to grow it long and healthy again I'd have to shave my head!! NO!!! My vanity! Aaron listened as I went through my whole story and showed him pictures of what I was thinking. An assistant then shampooed my hair and I was brought back practically shaking in anticipation. Before long my hair was chin-length. I didn't have too much time to absorb it before Aaron mixed a demi-permanent color (for shine and more blending,) that I was very specific about: I wanted dark, deep brown that was almost black but not an icky midnight blue that I see a lot of black dye-jobs turn out to be. While I waited for the color I was offered complimentary wine and tea as I chilled out. Nice touch! After a good blow-dry and straightening session I looked like a completely new person - very terribly chic, very French - and I felt for the first time in my life that I actually LOVED my hair. I don't know how to stress how amazing Aaron was and how glad I am that I listened to all the Yelp reviews and went to Whistle. I'm never going anywhere or to anyone else EVER again - I'm set for life! The whole process took two and a half hours and cost 170 (without tip.) I feel like I more than got my money's worth. I met Tom through a friend of mine at a birthday party, and I was in NYC for a little bit during spring break. Was looking for a hairstyling/dye job since it had been way too long since I last visited a salon (around 8 months). Got an appointment with Tom, and he's probably the friendliest stylist I've had the chance of meeting. Definitely listened to all my suggestions and was attentive to exactly what I wanted and the results were great. It was definitely my first time going into a salon in the United States, so I had no idea I was supposed to tip afterwards. I felt so awful! Sorry, Tom!! If I ever get the chance to go back to NYC, I'll definitely pay Whistle another visit and make up the tips I missed my last visit. I still feel pretty bad about it now. Either way gorgeous hair walking out, and I was sad months later once the dye/hairstyle grew out. Tom is amazing. Hands down, the best haircut I've ever gotten. I came into the city with a butcher job of a haircut from about two weeks prior and my friend and I decided I should try to find somewhere to fix it. The first place I came across was Whistle, and I walked in and had an appointment with Tom for about 20 minutes later. Tom saw the disaster of my hair and immediately went to work. I swear he made parts of my hair GROW to even out what was chunked out. I'm not even kidding, my hair looked LONGER when I left. Stylist: Dani Service: Cut Just received (seriously 2 hours ago) one of the best haircuts of my life. Dani was my stylist and she did a superb job. She took the time to ask me how I normally style my hair, my likes and dislikes of my current style and the type of cut I was looking for. I asked for a one-length cut, which from what I've been told, is one of the hardest cuts because of the precision required to achieve style. Before the cut, she made sure we went over together the style and length I agreed to. During the process, she was attentive and completely focused and her passion for her craft was undeniable. She also gave me tips on how to enhance my natural waves and recommended types of products that I could use. And, not once did she try to deliberately push the salon's products. Due to fear of a bad haircut, I've always flown back home to my long-time stylist on the West coast. But, I'm happy to say that those days are over! I have been meaning to write this review for some time now.. I have been going to Tom for regular cut and color for over a year now. I'll only ever see Tom as long as I'm living in New York (although I'm sure the entire staff is amazing). I moved cross country with very long hair and based on Yelp reviews and the close proximity to my house decided to make an appointment with Tom and go for a short messy bob. I love every cut-every time! My last appointment was Tuesday for highlights and I walked in with my usual lackluster "I don't even own a blow dryer" look, and walked out feeling, quite honestly prettier than I maybe ever have. Before Tom I was the person who would have to go home and immediately wash out the overly styled/blow out to then appreciate the cut. Not the case with Tom. His ability to listen and also somehow read my mind when I'm not sure exactly what I want is incredible. Not to mention the highlights are superb and always so natural, but most importantly not only does he have complete skill but a heart of gold. I had an appointment a couple days ago to have my shoulder length hair cut into the bob I like to get once I've grown my hair out enough to the point where its awkward feeling. I have a hairdresser who I love in LA, and so I was banking on a good cut and styling from Yelp's number one hair salon. Boy was I led astray. I ended up with a satisfactory but boring haircut and certainly not the haircut I wanted or paid for: a shortened A-line bob with blunt bangs, NOT swoopy. I think there are mostly likely much more competent hairstylists in the salon, but after this experience I'm not sure I can recommend Whistle to my friends. ONE WEEK LATER: The cut has grown out really nicely. And after I wrote my nasty first review the owner Will was nice enough to write me a personal message. Sure, I've already written a review, but Corinne is so fantastic that I just can't help myself but continue to rave. She's so laid-back. She so obviously cares about you and how you feel about your hair. She does an incredible job with cut and color (my first time coloring!). I'm also one of those people who usually doesn't like to talk and/or feels shy in the seat, but she's so easygoing that she makes it so comfortable, and I love chatting with her. The salon itself is so laid back. They can give you a superfun cut, but you'll never feel intimidated, or even any attitude, unlike other local salons or stylists with 'tude. I wrote a few messages on FB to Whistle Salon asking about the colorist services. I am a black woman who was going to get natural hair bleached. There were several times when the messages were read and they did not reply. I also called more than a few times and it constantly went to voice mail, this happened over 2 days. When I finally got a person on the line, the receptionist told me I would need to make a consultation. The website does not suggest it at all. The website does give the hours of operations. I informed the receptionist that I could make my consultation between 12:00pm-12:30pm for the consultation, he placed me on hold and said that they do not do consultations at that time. If consultations are only allowed at certain times shouldn't that be on the website instead of misleading that the hours are 12:00pm-9:00pm. I was told over the phone that consultations are only at select hours over the phone. This place has a terrible communication system. I want to say that the receptionist was very nice and. He tried to help me figure out different times to go in but when he placed me on hold to speak to the stylist to follow up with my accommodations, I was basically told that I would not be accommodated "it would be better if you went to a different salon". I have 3 friends that went here (she told me about whistle salon) she is a white woman and she has gotten her brunette hair bleached, and did not have to do a consultation. She said they do not make you do consultations before booking appointments, and it was obvious because I was black and stated this and my hair texture, they were intimidated about doing my hair, and would rather shun me away than to service. Its 2015 and there are still places in America that refuse people of color, i was told "it would be better if you went to a different salon" If you advertise that you do all hair, and specialize and are so great shouldn't you actually honor that. I also think that its boring and unoriginal that they can easily do white peoples hair but can not accommodate everyone and will find a way not too. If you are a person of color take your money elsewhere, if you are white and anti racist, there are better salons in nyc that will make it their duty to have services for all people and quite frankly in general not answering the phone and taking forever to reply to FB messages is extremely unprofessional. read more

Nice interiors: not cheesy like so many hip salons. no graffitti, no pink candy striped walls, etc. Sorry, I am aesthetically sensitive. 2. Carinne: straight up, real person with a clear concern for customer satisfaction. I can't take stylists who talk your ear off or who are primadonnas who think of their clients as an audience. make me the primadonna - that creates a salon experience worth repeating. 3. Expectations exceeded. My color didn't take well the first time and Carinne offered to redo it at no cost. I took her up on it and got a beautiful blow out gratis both times. also she fit me into her busy schedue without the blink of an eye. 4. The price pushed this from a 4 to a 5 star rating. Another glowing review for Whistle! The overwhelmingly good reviews here prompted me to give them a call, and I booked myself an appointment with Angela. The moment I walked in the receptionist was very friendly and the owner, who just happened to be sitting behind her, went out of his way to welcome me. I actually got a phone call for a family emergency right that second, and they were are so kind and patient while I stepped outside to take care of it. When I came back in, everyone (including the owner) made sure to ask me if everything was ok. Talk about a good first impression -- they are all sweethearts! Angela was sooo patient while I explained everything about what kind of hair I wanted, how I wanted it to look, and how much effort I wanted it to take. It was the most thorough consultation that I've ever had, and that is obvious from the haircut. She listened to me and gave me a flawless cut that I feel great about. She also gave me great advice about products, etc., and was honest with me about what was and was not going to be necessary/beneficial given my small budget. Did a great job on my wash and style. My appointment here was for just a wash and blow out. So I cannot comment on the abilities of cut and color techniques. So here is my story... yesterday I woke up late and had to run out the door for work, so on a whim I decided to throw some gel in my hair and go knowing I had a small Christmas party at a bar I was hoping I wouldn't look too ragged. Oh but I did and just before lunch I decided I needed to get my hair washed and blown out. to look cute and feel comfortable. So I did some handy searching here on yelp to find a place near my office, Whistle came up and sounded cool so I called and they were able to set me up with an appointment right after work. My stylist was Corrine. Even though I was getting just a wash and style she conversed with me before. I was pretty easy though and didn't care too much how it was styled as long as it had some body, was smooth, and looked good. She fully delivered. My hair felt light and had body and was nice and smoothed out. As for how else the experience went, the layout of the floor is pretty open and relaxed. It's never fun to feel stuffed in a salon. When I came in they took my coat and offered me a beverage if I liked. Everyone here seems really nice and laid back. If I didn't love my regular stylist in Queens I'd test out getting cut and color here. Plus Lennon the french bull dog who has the pleasure of being their mascot is really freakin cute. They are definitely going up on my desk board so if I ever need another quick wash and blow out after work again I can make an appointment. read more

PINNEY! I wish I would've met her sooner and I couldn't have spend 6 grueling years in NYC with mediocre haircuts. She layers may hair in a way that when it grows out it looks even better than when it was first cut. She's personable, funny and engages in convo- unlike some other stylists I've encountered. I have hair down to my midback, thick with waves, and she knows how to handle my hair... I'm mixed spanish and asian-- so anybody out there who has this problem-- PINNEY can spruce you up! read more

I've had super long hair for most of my 24 years, and just recently started playing with it a bit. I've cut inches off and put in some layers, but don't really experiment with it much. So when the idea to get bangs somehow got planted into my head, I (nervously) did some extensive research and eventually decided on Whistle. All I really knew was that I wanted bangs and didn't want my hair too short. I brought Tom a picture of what I vaguely wanted, and after listening to me say something probably incoherent about what I wanted my hair to look like, he laid out his plan and I said, "sounds good." Although I was still pretty nervous. But Tom was awesome and listened to everything I said, and told me exactly what he was planning on doing before he did it, and didn't make me feel like a total idiot for not knowing exactly what I wanted. He talked to me the whole time he was cutting my hair, which I usually don't like, but with him it was really casual and not forced at all. When I saw the finished product in the mirror, I was kind of startled because I'd never done anything that different to it. (Tom, if you're reading this, I LOVE my bangs! I hope my reaction didn't offend, lol.) The friend that I brought with me said it looked great, but it still took me a little while to get used to. When I woke up the next morning, I was like 'holy shit! This looks great!' I was running late so I just put it up in a bun and it was the cutest thing ever. So, long story short, Tom is great, I'm loving the cut and the bangs, it's super easy to style, and I'll definitely be going back. Plus, free bangs trims. I don't think you can ask for more. read more
