Most recently, it was trying a side dish that was one of the worst things I've ever tried at a restaurant. I tried to politely explain to the waiter that it wasn't to my taste -- I didn't ask for it to be taken off the bill -- and I got back a rude reply shaming me for not finishing it. It was jarring. White dog used to be a staple for solid upscale dining. I'm not sure what happened, but my meal last night was pretty bland and lackluster Starting with the bread bowl, which is basically 4 large rolls for $10. Really out of touch with quality and consistency for this price point. Next, the turkey sandwich, which isn't really a sandwich, more a closed turkey plate with bread and gravy slathered over it, which forces a knife and fork meal (not what I expected). Also, salmon salad is literally a chopped salad with mini shredded salmon. Why would you do that to a nice piece of fish? And the mushroom soup is a purée with no sign of pieces of mushroom. I still have my teeth, why do I feel like I'm eating baby food? I mean the taste was good but I feel like stumbled into a restaurant that panders to the blue hair population. We visited on a Sunday for brunch after a puppy yoga session at Penns Woods Winery. It was an all exclusive ticket that was described as follows: "A morning of puppy yoga, mimosas, and feel-good eats, because everything is better with pups! We've partnered with Providence Animal Center, Pennswoods Winery, and Yoga Six Glen Mills to bring you a morning that checks every box -- wellness, wine, good food, and dogs who have absolutely no idea what downward dog means but will try their best anyway. Start the morning at PennsWoods Winery with a mimosa. A Yoga Six instructor will lead you through a feel-good flow while puppies from Providence Animal Center meander freely through the class. These pups are all available for adoption -- so if you leave with a new best friend, that's a win we fully support. Then head to White Dog Cafe Glen Mills for a two-course brunch featuring breakfast breads fresh from our pastry kitchen, followed by your choice of entree and a mimosa to finish the morning." Here's the REAL description: 1. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The yoga session was outside. In the grass. With limited shade. Uneven ground. Lots of ants. Wet.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] A yoga session outside with 50 people should be led by an instructor who is either really loud or has a microphone set on. We couldn't hear the instructor. Did I expect an actual workout? No. I was there for the puppies. However, if you are leading a yoga class, the least you can do is make sure that EVERYONE can hear you. The puppies and volunteers were great. We got lots of puppy hugs and kisses. Plus ants. Lots of ants. Suggestion: limit the guests and have the session inside. Breweries do it all the time. 2. After yoga (9:00-9:30), you had one hour before brunch at the WDC. The winery offered a mimosa with the ticket, and they were very generous with the champagne. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The winery itself is beautiful, but there is no a/c at all. This is August, 90 degrees, humid AF. There should be a/c.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] And there were no puppies after yoga, which was a disappointment. Apparently the winery is not dog friendly, yet there was a big black lab roaming around the seating area. Why would you have puppy yoga at a winery that is not dog friendly? [[HIGHLIGHT]]The bathrooms were spacious and spotless, which was a plus.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] 3. [[HIGHLIGHT]]We arrived at the WDC around 10:20 and were led outside to the outdoor dining area. Again, it's 90+ degrees...and we were not informed via the ticket description that brunch would be outside.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] So, we chose a table in the shade (most were in the sun) and were told to help ourselves to water and coffee. After about a 1/2 hour, the head chef came out and introduced himself. He gave us this whole speech about "figs" and said we'd be served figs with honey and hazelnut. The figs were about the size of a golf ball, and we only got one each. The flavor was ok. Kind of bland, not filling. Now let's go back to the brunch description, which said this was a 2 course brunch, with the first course being "breakfast breads from our pastry kitchen," not one fig. The brunch menu itself had 4 choices. We ordered the French toast twice - once when we got there and once again after the fig. We weren't served the French toast until after 11:30. We sat there for over an hour with nothing but drinks and a fig. I showed our waitress the description of the brunch. She had no idea that's what it said. I didn't ask her to tell the manager, I simply wanted to tell someone that what was described on the ticket was not what was happening. She went and told her manager anyway and the manager came out with cornbread. That's not what I wanted. I didn't care about the cornbread, I cared about the inaccuracy of the event description and the lack of preparation this restaurant had for the event itself. Bringing us cornbread is like trying to shut us up instead of acknowledging their mistakes. No restaurant should make customers wait over an hour for food. WDC knew this event was scheduled and they were not prepared. End of story. It's not like we all just popped in unannounced and expected them to quickly serve a party of 50. This event was scheduled weeks, maybe even months, in advance. And it's not their first puppy yoga event! I would 100% have given them grace if this was their first time doing this, but it wasn't. The French toast was ok. Nothing special at all. Definitely not something that was worth waiting over an hour for. Conclusion: [[HIGHLIGHT]]I absolutely LOVE the ambiance (5 stars), but I'd never go back. I told my boyfriend I wished that we had a restaurant like this in our area. Everything was dog themed and very updated/modern. There were dog paintings, pictures, and fixtures everywhere you turned. And it was very clean and well staffed. Honest to God, I don't know how this place has such a low rating. I've been here twice now on completely different occasions, and both times I was greeted by friendly, smiling hostesses. I chose to sit at the bar each time and had the same bartender, Lauren -- she's amazing. (Maybe she's the secret?!) Lauren gave fantastic recommendations (I get indecisive sometimes), and she makes a mean "Dirty Dog" -- think dirty martini, but with spicy pickled green beans. She even hooked me up with extra spicy beans, which are pickled in-house. I swear I could eat an entire container in one sitting. First visit: I had the mushroom soup, roasted mushrooms, and salmon -- all absolutely delicious, comforting, and perfectly cooked. Second visit: I tried the deviled eggs, seafood primavera, and finished with the lemon sour cream cake. Every bite was a win. That cake? Light, zesty, and the perfect ending. We really wanted to love this restaurant and have it become one of our go-to spots because so many things were excellent. I loved the beet salad and the tofu dish. They had an appetizer special which was a dip tray and we loved that. The hummus was a little lemony but people like that just not me. I also appreciated that our server asked about dietary restrictions at the beginning of the meal. That attention to detail is a huge plus. Unfortunately, the pricing policies are what will likely keep us from returning. We had avoided coming here for years because we found the wine bottle prices extremely high for what we considered fairly average wines. Then we saw they were charging a credit card fee and we were not supporting businesses that did that. We finally decided to give it a try after a recommendation from a coworker, and we purchased a gift card because we were trying to avoid the restaurant's credit card surcharge. We thought the gift card would cover everything but the wine prices were exorbitant so we still had to dish out more cash. When we used the gift card, we were surprised that they attempted to add a credit card fee to the transaction. A gift card is not a credit card payment, and we questioned the charge especially because it's illegal to charge a credit card fee on a debit or gift card. The fee was removed, but we were disappointed that it was attempted and that there was still an effort to justify the charge. Hopefully it was a mistake and they don't attempt that with customers who may not know better. The wine pricing was also a challenge. The least expensive bottle on the menu was $60, which felt excessive, and the wine-by-the-glass pours were very small, making a bottle feel like the only reasonable option. Overall, we truly enjoyed the restaurant itself. The food, atmosphere, and service were all excellent. We wanted this to become a regular place for us, but the high bottle prices and the credit card fee policy are significant drawbacks that will probably keep us from returning with the gift card workaround. read more

I've dined at the White Dog Cafe twice for lunch. If you're a dog lover, then you'll love the White Dog Cafe! There's colorful pictures of various dog breeds on the walls and other fun dog themed decor. Both times I've been we didn't have a reservation. The first time there it was pretty busy because it was around the holidays, so we put our name on the waiting list. The hostess was very friendly and said it would be about 35 minutes, which it was. Luckily White Dog is located in Brinton Lake shopping center, so we popped into a few stores while we waited. The second time we dined here it was on a weekday and we were seated right away. Overall, I've found the food here to be solid! The deviled eggs are a must-order; so decadent. I liked that they were served with different topics for a nice variety. The crab dip is a perfect appetizer to share, packed with plenty of crab meat and super cheesy. We've also tried the tuna tartare which has great flavor. The only item I've tried that I didn't love was the chicken sandwich. The chicken was SO dry and there wasn't enough sauce on it (ordered some aioli on the side and even that couldn't save the chicken). Despite being so busy our waitress was there and took our orders with very little wait . I had the pear martini and it was delicious. My friend had the lavender martini and she loved hers. This was my first ever visit to White Dog and my biggest take away is how well the entire restaurant is decorated! From the front door, to the bathrooms, to every little detail throughout the restaurant is dog themed! The staff was very friendly, and the menu had great variety! I dined here for a birthday, and they provided a scratch off for a chance at a discount which was a fun $5 off. The salmon was perfectly cooked with delicious additions. The steak was part of the specials and it was cooked perfectly and paired with the most delicious mashed potatoes! The only annoyance was the additional charge to use a credit card. To me this was a nicer restaurant and my bill was well over $100. I personally don't carry that much cash or use a debit card at all. read more

We are repeat diners at White Dog cafe. Our satisfaction with the food, environment, and experience have been why we are repeat diners. But today we experienced something that might change that. We came in at 2:30, expecting to be at the end of the brunch rush and before the earliest of early bird diners. We requested a table for two and were asked to wait. Something was off because the entrance desk staff seemed flustered even though we could see empty tables and wait staff milling aimlessly. Soon one manager and then another came top and conferred quietly with the staff and the group off six of them poured over seating charts and computer screens, leaving us standing and then sitting while we waited. And waited. After 15 minutes of looking at empty tables and idle wait staff, we asked the front desk congregation if we had come at a bad time and perhaps should go elsewhere. The pleasant lady who initially greeted us said they could seat us "soon." We pointed at the empty tables in the bar area and asked whether we could sit there. They said we could. Once seated (where our vantage of the main dining rooms again showed empty tables and booths available) we were attended to promptly by a waiter who took our oder and brought water. From here our experience was more of what we expect from White Dog--good food, prompt service. Our only complaint is that none of the four to six employees at the front desk and neither of the two managers who stood within touching distance of customers waiting for a table bothered to explain the delay. And when we finished our meal and left, walking past the cluster of management at staff at the entrance, not one of th cluster bothered to thank us for visiting or to ask how we enjoyed the experience. I do not know the restaurant business, but I know in any business that if you ignore your customers they will go away. read more

We were seated quickly upon our arrival for our reservation, and greeted by our waitress who was a bit standoffish. She seemed a bit nervous, so I'm not sure if that played into things. They had a high chair waiting for us as requested, but we weren't really offered a kids menu or a toddler friendly cup, etc so I am not sure if they have kid friendly accommodations. We started our meal with the sugar coated doughnut holes served with a vanilla creme anglaise (5 per order, if you're looking to share!). They were just okay for me, but others at the table were more enthusiastic. Our entrees, however, were delicious. We did have an omelet mix-up, so my husband had a short delay in getting the Kennett Square omelet he ordered, but it was tasty when it did arrive. Unfortunately, there were plenty of 1-1.5cm long hard stems (the waitresses and the hosts explained that sometimes the stems of the mushrooms leave these hard and prickly bone-like substance behind) that made the soup less enjoyable. The portion size was underwhelming but the taste was good. The Spicy Lamb Bolognese at $27 was just bad. The pasta was slightly hard to chew on. The dish itself wasn't spicy and the green sauce that was there was almost bland. Overall, the dish was not delicious. The only upside was the great portion size. Thai Steak Salad $29 was just okay. The attempt at fusion was weird in that all of the elements of the different culture sort of did not mesh. This dish had pieces of steak, udon noodles, fresh veggies & shrooms, and a sauce that tried to hold them all together. The mushrooms and the peanuts were the highlights as they brought that deep earth flavor plus an element of crunch. Everything else failed to work because every bite was just confusing. The burger + fries at $24 tasted just okay. It's just the price simply did not match the taste. The burger was, literally, an okay burger in all of its aspects. Every bite screamed OKAY. Fish and chips at $29 was the only exception. The fish and fries were both amazing! The fish was tender and the breading was tasty! Portion size was small for the price but that was okay because the taste was great! Special mentions: The Truffle Fries and the Mushroom Side were the saving graces of the night. These two sides simply held their own and carried the dead weights the other food brought (minus the fish and chips). The truffle fries left a deep impression due to the fact that every bite brought a strong and delicious wave of sensation. I'm going to be very honest and say this restaurant is not on my revisit list. I should have given this place a 2-star but since it's already 3.5-star on Yelp, I figured I don't want to lower their rating by too much by giving them a 2/5. read more
