One of the best restaurants I went to while I was in town! I had reservations since there were seven people in our group. We were seated right away at a spacious table in a side room. Loved the dog themed decor throughout the place and the beautiful vintage looking bar. I ordered the Stoudt's, "Leg Lifter" Pale Ale.. by far the best local beer I had here! It's an American Pale Ale; from Adamstown, 4.1% ... so much flavor and super refreshing! Need to find this in NY!!! We shared a few appetizers, the Local Artisan Cheese and the Antipasti board.. both were amazing. Fresh meats and creamy cheeses along with bread, nuts, jams and olives. Perfect amount to split. I had a tough time deciding what to order for my main course, I finally went with the Green Meadow Double Cheddar Burger...with Smoked Bacon Mayo and added extra raw onions ... it came with Truffle Parmesan Fries...the perfect accompaniment to the burger! Great recommendation by our server. Then there is the service.... wow they are on their A game here! Constantly replacing silverware and making sure the linen is clean and free of bread crumbs. MICE MICE MICE I really want to like this place, and have had good meals here. The food is usually quite good, the service is typically attentive, and the drinks can be very good. But I won't come back after my last experience. After a celebration dinner last fall, I noticed a mouse scurrying across the floor. Then another. And another. I brought this to the attention of the waiter, who was extremely nonchalant and remarked that there was nothing that could be done. And nothing was done, about the mice or about any comps on our bill. I called the restaurant that week and spoke with some staff, including a manager. They expressed sincere apologies for our experience, but again, never offered any comps or indication of how they intended to rectify the problem in the short term (like laying down some traps, contacting an exterminator, etc.). They told me they would escalate the issue and get back to me, and took down my contact information. Surprise! No one ever called me. This restaurant doesn't appear to care about my business. They don't even bother to maintain the appearance of a clean restaurant, with mice roaming around the dining room floor during dinner hours. That is not and cannot be acceptable in 2023, I don't care how old your building is. I gave them a chance to rectify, and they blew me off. If it were easier to figure which regulatory agency oversees their sanitary practices, I would have notified them. Maybe this review (and the several others reporting mice) will get the owners' (or somebody's) attention. read more

Ordered two soups (kennett square mushroom soup, gazpacho), yellowfin tuna tartare and local plate cheese and white dog mule. Tuna tartare was my favorite. Local plate cheese included honeycomb, which I haven't seen in other cheese plates, which I liked. The mushroom soup better than the gazpacho, but both were great. Everything from the atmosphere to the service was simply amazing. There is a decent-sized parking lot for the shopping center where the White Dog is located and at 10:30 am on a Saturday, parking was a breeze. I made a reservation on Open Table (bonus points for being on there!) and we were seated very shortly after arriving. Immediately upon entering we were greeted by the beautiful bar that had wine bottle chandeliers. As we walked back to our table, I noticed that each dining room's decor is different while all being tied together by the dog theme. Our server greeted us as soon as we sat down and explained the brunch drinks and that they offer some bottomless items. While the drinks sounded amazing, I just stuck with coffee which my cup was never found empty. Before our entrees came out, we were presented with three slices of their house made "bread" aka cake. There was lemon poppy, funfetti, and apple. For my main course, I ordered the Carrot Hummus. It was presented so beautifully that I didn't want to eat it but it was just too tasty to stop eating it. The fried chips that come with it are to die for. Others at the table ordered the Steak and Eggs, Eggs Benedict, and Farmer's Breakfast. Everyone raved about their meals. I went back to White Dog because every time I drove by and saw the beautiful outdoor seating I just HAD to go. I found out that they do happy hour outside and was totally sold. The happy hour was a GREAT deal - lots of food and drink options. The normal happy hour is M-F 4-7 and outdoors (and in the den) from 4-6. My husband and I each got a cocktail and split the cheese board. Our cocktails were usually but on hh for $5 - I got the Lucky Lady (sweet but refreshing) and my husband for the Buster Negroni (really good and a fun take on the original). The cheese board is usually $18 and it was a STEAL at $10 for 3 cheese and accompaniments. My first time to this place, but definitely not my last. This place was tremendous, with great food, great drinks, and great decor. Started the night with a whiskey drink, plus a ghost cheese and mushroom flatbread and fried pickles. Ok, so the flatbread: insane! Kennett Square mushrooms packing tremendous flavor paired amazingly well with goat cheese. Just unbelievable! The fried pickles are done extremely well, with huge crunch and good flavor. Really saying something considering they're spears, not chips, and usually that means subpar. Not these, by any means. Dinner was giant prawns and a huge burger. The burger was made even bigger by adding thick cut bacon and a fried egg. The prawns had a great flavor, and the burger was tremendous! Large, with good flavor, plenty of toppings, and lots of fiction between the ingredients to help hold it together. Well constructed. Oh yeah, and the decor of the place is dogs. All over the place. I frequent this establishment quite often for date nights with my wife. However, unfortunately, will not be doing so any more. This weekend my wife, sister in law and our respective kids attended the White Dog Cafe in Wayne for lunch and asked to be seated outside as it was a beautiful day out. Once seated for 10 people, we were provided one umbrella for shade. When we asked the manager, Joe, for an additional umbrella which was not in use, he responded in the negative saying that the specific umbrella was required for the table which would be turned over promptly for new customers which might come. The whole time we were there, the table was empty and the umbrella went unused. We asked someone else to help us and that individual promptly did. However, the exchange with Joe the manager was so unpleasant as to make me not want to go back so long as he is there. It's surprising in a customer service industry notorious for competition, the manager of such a lovely restaurant is completely inadequate in servicing a, once loyal customer. -DH read more

The menu is extensive American cuisine. We shared a few starters including the Heirloom Tomato Salad & Local Artisan Cheeses. For main courses we had a pork chop and halibut fish main courses. The dishes were perfectly prepared. Service was super attentive throughout the meal. It appears that they have a very motivated staff. I've been here for lunch before and thought it was decent but dinner was a total disappointment. Overpriced food, mediocre drinks, and extremely small portions left me and my family feeling overwhelmingly unimpressed. I made a reservation for Mother's Day dinner a month in advance. We waited 10min to be seated even though we arrived on time. Luckily, our server was nice and took our drink orders quickly. Don't expect them to serve you bread automatically - you have to opt in and tell them you want it. Drinks: They take custom drink requests as long as they're simple. I love spicy drinks so I got a Spicy Scoundrel, expecting a refreshing drink with a kick to it. The drink was horrible. It was extremely bitter and had no spice to it whatsoever. I don't like to leave drinks unfinished but I really could not stomach this one. Food: The food quality was fine. This is a farm to table restaurant and it's ingredients are clearly fresh but the premium price tag they put on the food is ridiculous. Avoid the Bibb Salad at all costs. The few lettuce leaves you get for $14 will shock you - I thought it was a complimentary side salad until I saw my check. The mussels tasted okay but were super grainy and not super fresh. The shrimp and grits came with hardly any grits and what little grits existed were super watered down and grainy - the texture of powdered mashed potatoes. Land and Sea was good but the portions were small even for people who don't eat a whole lot. The duck breast was nothing special and again came in extremely small portions. We had to eat all the bread on the table to fill up. Ambiance/Service: It's hard not to like the ambiance and decor here, especially if you love dogs. It's a little quirky and old fashioned but comfortable and homey at the same time. The service is good and they explain the mission of the restaurant to you each time. However, this hardly makes up for the ridiculously pricey menu and okay food. My family and I will not be back. This place is worth a try given the cool decor and vibes but save yourself the money and come for lunch. Dinner just isn't worth it. read more

The ambiance is great you have the option to eat inside or outside. They immediately greet you and the staff is very friendly. My waiter was great and very pleasant offering suggestions if I needed them. Started with the raspberry coffee cake. Drinking a moctail Puppy and a Mojito. Lamb rigatoni Bolognese was exceptionally prepared and very tasty. The creamy Umami mouth feel permeated the after-taste so much that you wanted to just keep eating. What an adorable brunch spot! Upon walking in I was immediately taken back by the rustic feel of this cafe. Dog lovers will absolutely appreciate the inside, which is so charming. Five stars for ambiance. I must admit I felt a bit underdressed having came from the gym - it was somewhat of a business casual atmosphere. Oops! The food here was excellent. I loved the warm apple cider donuts, they're even better than the ones out in Lancaster! The real star of the show was my husband's fried chicken benedict. The biscuits were nice, fluffy and thick and the home fries were peppery but not too overly done. Chicken was done right as well. I can't give a full five stars due to my entree - it was not bad at all but it just wasn't what I was expecting. I ordered the funfetti pancakes which I was told that "looked super cool." When they arrived they literally were just plain pancakes. I cut them open and there were almost no sprinkles inside. Not joking there maybe were 3-4 in one pancake (see photo.) Very misleading name. They were still tasty, but definitely not deserving of the name funfetti. Maybe I got an off batch or something. If I knew they were going to be this plain I would've ordered something else. This place has a very interesting and pleasant decor. The outdoor dinning area is really lovely, especially if you snag a seat in the garden. The inside alludes to the namesake dog theme and combines it with opulent chic (or something like that). However, once you look past the adorableness of a place, what I love about a great restaurant is the unrehearsed flow of staff and service that comes from an excellent front house manager and an experienced team. You won't find that here. The bus boys don't get out of your way when crossing paths and although polite, the multiple hostesses look and act busy instead of welcoming. You won't find anything exciting on the menu but a lot of the items are well rehearsed by the kitchen (the spicy chicken sandwich, the half chicken, the mushroom soup of course). However, they have been known by this patron to mess up an order (burger not cooked to the correct temp, leaving parts of a take out order out). All in all, cute, predictable, and sweet, but far from an excellent dining experience. read more

Just attended a Baptism celebration there on Sunday on 4/21. It was a disgrace the way this restaurant treated us. They made us go outside in 53 degree weather on a patio that was not setup for a party of 12--they had no heaters setup or umbrellas to reduce the wind ( I had to force them to set a heater up and the staff did not know how to hook it- (so I got on my hand and knees to set it up-- using the wrench that the waitress had brought to the occasion. She thanked me and offered to buy me a drink but never followed-up) The service was terrible--I think because the waitresses did not want to go outside--it was too cold. I felt bad for the host as she was mis-lead by the restaurant as to the viability of the brunch setup. I cant believe that this restaurant felt no responsibility for the conditions that it caused its customers to endure. They did collect all the money due to them--it is a disgrace what this restaurant did to book some business. I visited White Dog Cafe for brunch a few times a couple of years ago and recently had my first dinner visit there. The service is excellent. The ambiance is nice, and nice enough for a special occasion but still laid back enough for a relaxed gathering of friends. The food is very good. All of the ingredients are locally sourced except for some of the fish, which is still fresh and, for those who care about such things, is still allegedly responsibly sourced in some way or other. The quality of the ingredients comes through in the taste. The dishes are mostly classic American fare that's dressed up a bit (e.g. truffle parmesan fries). They're well conceived and well prepared. You do pay a little for the quality, service, and environment... Fish & chips is $32, a burger & fries is $19, most of the sides (marinated watermelon, which is actually quite good, baked mac & cheese, and Old Bay corn on the cob) are $9. A 12 ounce NY strip steak with one side is $45. But the prices aren't out of line with the experience they provide. read more

I have been wanting to try White Dog for awhile now and finally made it out last week. I immediately loved the atmosphere, very chic. My description isn't going to do it justice but, Cute dog portraits all over, different rooms, wood bar area, and a patio area. We ended up sitting out on the patio, which was lovely. They have a fairly large drink menu. I ended up getting the "great dame" which I highly recommend. I couldn't even tell you what was in it besides st. germain, but trust me it was awesome. We ended up ordering the cheese plate to start which was really good. We were sent out something by the chef which was different seafood on top of chips, also great. For dinner, I had the tuna burger, it was cooked perfectly and delicious. Although this place may be a little more casual, everything about the experience said fine dining. Our waiter gave us great service, he was super attentive and did a really good job of explaining the different specials. The food is amazing, i'm guessing I would have enjoyed anything off the menu. This would be the perfect place to take some on a first date if you want to impress without looking like you're trying too hard. Yes, it is pretty expensive (around $60 pp), but that is expected at a place like this. Overall, White Dog exceeded my high expectations. I can't wait to come back! read more

Met some friends here for dinner the other night. I immediately loved the atmosphere. First rate. They have a great patio outside which is where we sat. The service was excellent. Definitely 5 star dining. This is the kind of service you expect to receive at a high end restaurant. Wine list and cocktails were extensive. I chose a glass of the boom boom syrah which I really liked. We had the cheese plate to start. Lots of interesting things on the plate to eat. Ate some things that I didn't even know what they were. My complaint here is that there weren't enough things to put the cheese on so we wound up with a lot of extra cheese just sitting there because there was nothing to put it in. And brie isn't something you just slice and eat. For dinner my daughter and I had the tuna burger. It was cooked medium rare to rare and it was excellent. It came with home made chips. Very tasty. Overall, a really enjoyable experience. Pricing was very high. The tuna burger was $22 and that was one of the cheaper items on the menu. If the pricing were a little more palatable, I would have given them five stars. This would be a wonderful place to come on a date so if you want to impress, this is the place. Just make sure you bring your wallet. Expect to pay at least $50/per person. read more

I came here for Mother's Day and was shocked by how incredibly cute this place is. They were very accommodating (I have a 2 year old and 8 month old) with my active/loud kids. Service was friendly too. The kennett square omelet and blueberry pancakes were quite delicious...even our toddler was asking us for more. I didn't realize that menus may differ by location (they didn't have the blueberry pancakes at the Haverford location). We also tried the donuts which were fine, but not as great as the eggs and pancakes and definitely not filling. read more

The decor in this space is INCREDIBLE. I was so impressed I actually wondered who their interior designer is. Everything from the paintings to coat hooks to paw print tiles to light fixtures are high class and tastefully done. The service was great. We had a toddler with us and requested to switch tables after 10 minutes because the toddler gravitated to the booth and they were very accommodating. Giving it four stars instead of 5 because the avocado BLT I had was overcooked - overcooked egg, really crumbly bread and tough bacon. The fries were delicious that were served with it. Also minor detail but I know my lettuce and it was served with romaine not bibb as was described on the menu. It was a good sandwich but not great. But for the decor and such it was worth it. I love this place and always, always have the best meal! My grilled salmon melted in my mouth! My friend's tuna tartare looked raw, as it should have, and she loved it. I enjoy my desserts, so when we saw a salted caramel maple blondie with vanilla ice cream on the menu, we decided to split it. And it was like trying to split the atom. Or wood. You had to ratchet up all the strength you had to pierce the blondie just to break off a piece. I asked the waitress for a saw but she brought us a knife instead. I could have forgiven everything if the blondie had been at all good. But it had no discernable taste. Maybe it was really, really stale. Had a business lunch here today; it was everyone's first time. What an interesting restaurant! The decor is unique -- very shabby chic with dogs and birdcages and such everywhere. We were seated in a corner, out of the way, which was conducive to our gathering. The menu is not huge, but offers a vast enough variety to satisfy the tastes of most individuals. Our server, Jose, was attentive and very patient, and showed an appropriate sense of humor. Our water glasses stayed full and our empty plates were promptly cleared. And our plates were left empty, indeed, as everything was delicious! We each had the "award-winning" Kennett Square mushroom soup, which was positively delectable. For our main course we all tried something different: kale salad, endive salad, chicken sandwich, and tuna tartare. I had the blackened swordfish tacos, garnished with some greens on the side. YUM! Three tacos didn't look like much at first, but it was the perfect amount of food, considering I also ate the soup and one of the rustic bread rolls. Speaking of which, the butter is sweet -- and totally delicious. For dessert, one person had the seasonal pumpkin ice cream, another had the "flower pot," and I had the adorable little apple pie. I personally appreciate how the restaurant sources from local food providers, and everything tasted as fresh as they claimed. For this reason -- plus the high quality and the location -- I think they're able to justify the prices, though that might be off-putting for some. It's time for an update. This is one of my favorite restaurants on the Main Line. They serve seasonal food and change up their menu. What I love about White Dog however is that they have excellent food and some of the best consistent customer service in the industry that I see anywhere. Similar to how you come to expect seamless service at stores like LL Bean or Target, that's kind of how WD is. They will take care of it, whatever IT is, and you. I love that feeling. If there's anything that goes wrong, they won't weasel their way and try to nickel and dime you. They make it so that you want to come back again. And you do! I recently tried the mahi mahi which is a classic dish and absolutely loved it! Loved the fish with sweet, savory, mashed. Everything just fit well.
