I am specifically leaving this review of the Whitman's restaurant on Hudson Street. The last time that we ordered from this place my son went to pick up the order 10 minutes after the time it was supposed to be ready. The order was not executed at all and my son sent home. We had to go back for the order 20 minutes later. Today I have ordered with the app and have been waiting outside for 15 minutes for the order to be ready. There is a bell at the door but nobody answers. Only after calling four times did I break through to the kitchen and I am still currently waiting for my order 20 minutes later than the app said it would be available. I like the food but they don't have their stuff together Don't get frustrated the way I have been go somewhere else! read more

I've only done take-out here so can't speak to the dine-in experience, but the food is great. I usually go with the cheesesteak, which is on the pricey side at $13 but comes with a huge portion of meat and cheese (and an array of other toppings if you so desire, ranging from avocado to mushrooms) as well as a side of fries! The fries are unexpectedly good - kind of a medium cut (smaller than steak fries but not quite French) and have a crispy exterior but soft interior. I also sometimes get the corn, which is just a side of sauteed corn kernels that are kind of buttery. They also have a free soda for orders over $15 on Seamless, so that's a nice bonus. Definitely a heavy meal, but excellent for indulgence. read more

The one time I got my food on time it was pretty good! However, the service is deplorable. The next time my girlfriend went to pick up our food they forgot to put the order through to the kitchen. She waited for 25 minutes while they made it. No big deal. Wrote it off as a mistake, it happens. A couple months later I order again. I go to pick it up the food and it's not ready. Over the course of the next 30 minutes they go and check on my food 3 times. I'm getting fed up and finally ask what is going on. Only now do they realize they never put in the order to the kitchen again! I have no idea what they were checking on since the order was never put through. I storm out and ask them to cancel my order. They don't even bother to cancel the order, so I have to call Chow Now so they can cancel it or I would have been charged for the food they never made! Went here with a friend after hearing great things about their burgers. We arrived around 1pm on a Saturday and we were easily seated in their downstairs dining room. We decided to start with an order of the Brussels sprouts, which were very tasty and had a nice crispyness and bite to them. For the main part of the meal, I decided to go with the Juicy Lucy. Despite the fact that this burger was a little on the smaller side, it definitely was worth the hype. The meat was tender, the cheese was oozing and the sauce and onions really added nice flavor to it. I dig the space, but I'm not a fan of burger restaurants that give you an option. Because you are always left thinking, "maybe I should've had something else." It's impossible not to have a twinge of doubt when you look around the restaurant and see other people eating burgers that you could've been eating. I agree with Ben L.: these are overpriced sliders. They're not bad, but they are small, and the quality of the meat is not particularly special, and that's really what I feel I should be paying a premium for on a burger. Instead what they do have are some delicious fresh toppings that are prepared very well. While I thought the bacon was overdone, the caramelized onions and mushrooms were fresh and delicious. The fries were delivered hot and without much sogginess to speak of- not an easy feat. They've also got some seriously good pickles. Customer service is also very good, when there's a problem they do everything they can to rectify it. I firmly believe that there's an art in composing a successful burger, as the sheer simplicity of this food item means the end result can go in multiple directions. Take Whitman's for example, a small, cash-only East Village eatery specializing in the burger. It sits neatly in the middle between the low and high-end burger joints, offering a variety of burgers that fall anywhere in the $7-$12 range, as well as a solid variety of sides and starters to help round out the meal. While it's not quite as well-known as Minetta Tavern or Spotted Pig [1], I've had many friends include it in their standings for NYC's best burger, so it was only a matter of time before I made a visit of my own. On a chilly weekday evening, there were only a handful of guests on the first floor, although I believe most of the seating available is downstairs on the second floor. We were able to grab the table nearest the counter, though, and quickly had menus and glasses of water taken care of. No first visit to Whitman's is complete without trying the Juicy Lucy Burger. My former high school teacher was quick to note that it's not entirely accurately named, as its quite different from the original versions found at Matt's Bar and 5-8 Club in Minneapolis. It's probably best described as a "fusion" between the classic northwestern Juicy Lucy and the Pimento Cheese Burger more commonly found in the south. The patty is comprised of a Pat LaFrieda short rib blend with a generous pocket of pimento cheese in the center; it's topped with caramelized onions, lettuce, tomato, spicy pickles, and mayonnaise-based "special sauce". And as the menu warns: upon first bite, it will squirt (cheese). I wasn't too impressed with it, which partially might have been due to the sheer messiness of trying to split it in half to share, but mostly because the pimento cheese completely overwhelmed every other component in the burger. I also was able to try the Spicy Burger, which has a well-spiced beef patty that's served with simply with creamy avocado, red onions, and arugula. Although slightly overcooked, I think I actually enjoyed this burger more as the actually flavor of the beef was able to shine. The avocado added a contrasting creaminess to the spice and the fresh onion contributed some much-needed acidity as well. While Whitman's does get points on the creativity on their burger offerings, I don't think the end product highlights the best of the burger. Sure, I wouldn't try to dissuade anyone from coming to try the Juicy Lucy for the first time, but there's plenty of stronger contenders to be found for the title of NYC's best burger. -- [1] I've found both of the burgers offered at these acclaimed venues to be over-lauded and over-priced. "Put Bacon on Everything." That's written clear as day on the sandwich board outside Whitman's. What's not to like? TBW insisted we try this burger joint. I dont love burgers like a good American should, but every so often I will have one. I am partial to Five Guys and on occasion Shake Shack, my heart melts for ZaitZeff and that's about it. But because I am a good, loving wife, I agree to go check it out since TBW loves burgers probably more than he loves me. So we go on a random weeknight. I order some beer special they have on tap, the waitress suggests I try it first and brings me a sample in a cute little glass and I love it already. Sold on the beer, we fuss over the menu, because suddenly this non-burger lover is psyched about the menu choices. I settle on The Hound, which sounds delicious: burger with bacon (infused into the meat. Le sigh), shoe-string onions, arugula, gruyere cheese. Ohmigod. Things that are important in life? The Hound. It was such an enjoyable burger. It was small enough that I could actually get a decent bite, with everything in it. That's terrific because all the flavors meld together as they should and UGH. More, please. We split fries which were very delicious as well and the Crack Kale. There was no explination as to what this dish was, but we figured when one likens something to crack, it must be delicious. Not that I think crack is delicious. Mom, if you are reading this, I don't do drugs. This review is becoming lengthy and difficult. Suffice it to say the Crack Kale is AMAZING. It legit melts right in your mouth. It's not sweet but it's not savory and it's just....glorious. I have never experienced a dish like that in my life. It was so weird. I want to know how they cook it for the sheer fascination of how the kale becomes like that. The decor was adorable and cozy too. The basement space is warm and inviting and eclectic. I've enjoyed Whitman's on several occasions and find their take on the humble hamburger to be creative and delicious. I recommend their Juicy Lucy as well as their Upstate Burger. If a place has sweet potato fries or fried pickles, I must order them, it's a thing I have and Whitman's versions don't disappoint! The location is on the small side with an upstairs and downstairs dining room. The service was a little on the slow side, but they were still friendly. I think it was the server's first day. I usually come here with a group of friends (foursome), but I can picture bringing a fun date here before a night of drinking beer and awkward conversation. I really want to like Whitman's, and I actually kind of do. The problem is, despite the fact that "like" is the strongest positive reinforcement you can give on Facebook, in real life and in NYC, "like" simply isn't good enough any more (especially with so many great burger options). For example, if I were in the area for lunch and craving a burger (a typical occurrence), I'd choose Brindle Room in an instant. When placed side by side with Whitman's dry-aged burger, there's no comparison. What's the best way to ruin a dry-aged burger? Add horseradish sauce, which completely masked the flavor of the dry-aged beef. I've never been much of a fan of cheddar on my burgers either. However, I do have to give them credit for using what looks to be Martin's "Big Marty" sesame seed rolls-- a personal favorite of mine. Whitman's is a sliver of a spot in between the East Village and Alphabet City. Americana decor lines the walls, with illustrations of George Washington and Paul Revere, among other American heros, lining the tables and walls. Also noteworthy is the bathroom, which has a mirror sitting above the toilet that's exactly "dick-high," making me wonder about its potential purpose. I've been to Whitman's twice. On my first visit, I was enticed by promises of a Juicy Lucy filled with pimento cheese. While I enjoyed the burger (the cook had managed to keep the meat around medium while completely melting the cheese), there simply wasn't enough cheese beyond a pathetically small ooze. On my second visit, a tomato had been added. Yet the same problem remained. Too little cheese (I've had a much better Juicy Lucy at RUB). Sides include french fries and the increasingly popular frickles (and crispy, "crack kale," which I haven't tried). The french fries were barely warm and nothing special. The frickles were solid. Unlike many I'd tried in the South (and elsewhere) they were thin sliced and lightly fried, giving the pickles a crunchy character. Not bad with the side of spicy mayo. Add Whitman's to the multitude of solid neighborhood burgers. Unfortunately, the potential draws-- a Juicy Lucy and dry-aged burger, don't match up with their peers. In any event, Whitman's is a good spot to sit back with a pint of Bluepoint Toasted Lager and throw down a burger. read more

***YELP FIND*** While searching yelp for a new burger joint in my neighborhood, I happened upon Whitman's. I don't know how I hadn't known about it in the past considering I've probably walked by it 50 times but I thank yelp for helping me discover it this past weekend. An unassuming store front leads into a small area with a counter and a couple of tables. The majority of seating is downstairs. The Juicy Lucy (sounds like an awesome porn name) was indeed juicy and squirt out cheese when you bite it. The menu warns you of this so be careful. Despite the fact that they cook the burger to a medium temperature in order to melt the cheese inside, there was no lack of flavor. Other reviews comment that the burger is small and while it may appear that way, it is twice as thick as other burgers so what it lack's in size, it makes up for in girth. The bun is a standard sesame seed but it was soft and suited the burger well. The juicy lucy is also topped with sauteed onions and a special sauce. The sauteed onions were great and added a touch of sweetness to the savory burger. We also got an order or frickles and sweet potato fries. I've had better of each but they were still pretty good. The fried pickles were of the chip variety and beer battered which is a double plus. I just prefer a sweet pickle (see: The Beagle) as opposed to a dill but that's personal preference. I would still order them again. After everything, I left here feeling full but not stuffed. Being the fatty that I am, I like to feel stuffed but I could have eaten more fries if I wanted to. These burgers are definitely worth checking out. Next time I'm going for the PB&B. read more

The only thing better than a good burger, is a burger that is actually is the size a burger. The quality here is really good, it's just, my god. So small. It's like going to Red Lobster for lobster. It's so small. It should be called Red Scorpion. I paid 13 bucks for a small grilled cheese burger, and it was just beyond small. Maybe it was my fault for that choice and it is definitely small, but all my friends said the same thing as they got different burgers. In NJ, I can get s massively big burger, great quality with toppings for about $8-9, and it's just as delicious. the waitresses there are pretty cool though. Made it a better experience. Also, need more sauces on the tables. Ketchup is so boring and cliche. I just hope to go back there and try a different one. Maybe I'll have a better experience with the food. The burgers are made with high quality meat and have cheese exploding out the middle. I was actually more impressed with their fried pickles. I saw a Food Network show on juicy lucys in the midwest and they looked incredibly fatty and delicious so I decided to search around and see if there were any joints in NY that did the deed. Whitman's fit the bill perfectly. The establishment is located a little off of St. Marks and boasts a very pleasant two-floor setup with lots of natural light upstairs and a more relaxed and dim decor downstairs. Lots of two seaters and maybe one or two tables that fit 4-6. The menu contains a number of burger and sandwich options but the juicy lucy is the star of the show. It is simple and elegant. Two soft sesame buns, a rib patty with pimento cheese (slight kick to it) on the inside waiting to ooze out, and caramelized onions on top. It's a petite burger but packs quite the punch in flavor. Skip the fork and knives and dig right into the cheesy goodness. The crack kale is deep fried kale and it has an impossibly crisp texture with a nice oily/salty flavor. Definitely worth getting. The Mangold...Jesus. This burger is in my top 5 without question. The party is a mix of ground beef and beef brisket, so be prepared for a juicy burger. The big feature of this burger is the creamy horseradish. For me, it's the perfect condiment for the burger because it's such a major flavor contrast that doesn't detract from the patty. The burger is served a la carte so I paired it with their blue cheese fries. It's their regular fries topped with a dollop of blue cheese dressing. Sounds simple enough but the dressing seems made in-house and pairs perfectly. However it does get super salty towards the bottom of the bowl. Their beer and wine list is very small but packed with selections that pair well with their burgers. Aside from the burgers they also sell salads, but why would you order a salad from a burger joint? My only gripe was that my burger was overcooked. I asked for it medium rare but was brought to the table at medium well. Surprisingly the burger was still delicious.
