    Crack Kale

Whitman's!! It's just so... comfy. Most of the seating is in their basement downstairs, which is small but feels so warm and inviting with its fun assortment of throwback Americana/NYC decor and the stack of well-loved board games they keep in the corner. For what it lacks in vibrancy, it certainly makes up for in warmth. Walking in is easy, and the food is exactly what you'd expect. The juicy lucy is imperfect -- the pimento cheese is a fun concept, but kind of ends up being its own big blob instead of mixing in with the burger like it's supposed to -- but I mean, it tastes great. The fries are a good portion and solid, and the crack kale is honestly fantastic: light, airy, melt-in-your-mouth kale with plenty of Old Bay flavor. A great neighborhood spot for a perfectly respectable burger!

Whitmans has propelled itself to the top of our smashburger list. This amazing smash deviated from the standard by lacking pickles, but we didn't even care. It's perfectly moist without being greasy, which is usually a con, but in this case, it was a major pro. The flavor was on point. The SIDES were AMAZING. The crust on the onion rings almost melted in my mouth, and the loaded tots were not only gorgeous but also delicious. They were giving gourmet with the smokey cheese and pieces of bacon. It is pretty expensive for a smash with a side, but it's worth it.

Solid lunch spot in the neighborhood. The fries are far superior to the tater tots. Lamb burger was really tasty, but did think it was bizarre that the cheese came on the side. You can skip the fried pickles and just order some more fries.

After a show at UCB we came here for dinner. It was busy on a Friday night upstairs but downstairs was dead. I have been here a number of times but it has been a few years. I got the juicy Lucy which was excellent and the fried pickles which were also very good. The fries are amazing as well. It's like a rump room style downstairs which is fun. Definitely come here for burgers if you're in the area!

The ambiance was good and casual, great for friends. The service was not so good, took about 30 minutes to get the check. Food was decent, I would recommend getting a smash burger instead of the regular burger since the patty is very thick.

Whitman's has a nice shack set up for outdoor seating with heat lamps for their three or so tables. It was a nice place for a cold Friday. We ordered a wedge salad and fried pickles to start. The pickles were very crispy and had a good sauce to go with it. The wedge salad was pretty good as well. I don't love blue cheese so I scraped a lot of the dressing off but the bacon bits went well with it. We shared the juicy Lucy burger between two of us. The burger was a bit smaller than I expected although it was quite heavy with all the cheese so we were still full at the end of the meal. Overall a cozy place to for outdoor dining. Service was a little slow although expected given COVID times.

Big fan of the cheesesteak. Seasoned well. Only opp would be that the fries are sometimes way over cooked when I order delivery.

Reservations open 2 weeks in advance around 10am and they go super fest so I recommend you try for the day you need as for me I could only have gotten brunch on a Sunday. Those people spam the crap out of their buttons for the dinner spots and when I went I can see why. The place is brimming with old school New York charm and it's completely overwhelmingly beautiful and has an old jazzy vibe to it. It's large and spacious and they sat us in the middle of the entire restaurant. (I had a group of 6) The vibe was so good you don't really want to leave and they also don't really kick you out. I think we were the last ones to exit for brunch but they were so nice they didn't kick us out. Their espresso martinis are ok. It wasn't as amazing as a regular cocktail bar but it is just ok. We started off with a shrimp cocktail, smoked whitefish Caesar salad and the two plates of truffle monkey bread which was soooo good. I really enjoyed this as it's the main reason we came here. It's almost like a honey dinner roll with truffle. We got everything next which some people got their own and some shared. Some people got their own American breakfast platter which was some overdone eggs and a meat with gigantic toast and if you only order scrambled eggs it comes in a bowl but I would much rather order their classics like steak sandwich and the spicy shrimp was pretty good! Fries are top tier! I can see why people just come here for dinner. I would give it mostly 5 stars for the overall ambiance and environment and a few classics. I think their old fashioned is better than their espresso martinis though even though it looks so good in this type of setting! It's hard to get a reservation though so next time I'll need to try some new things if I score another!

Then, when it was finally time to be seated in the dining room, I was so pleased with the upscale, romantic interior. Overall, I like the vegetables dishes a lot more here and I know what I like now, but not very interested in trying more things.

I watched him spill on other tables as well. He never apologized. He never wiped it up. Then 4th time he filled our glasses, he spilled the water on my wife. He did not apologize. He did not even acknowledge it and it was very clear that he noticed he did it. My wife, quite restrained, let our waitress know what happened. Her response: "What do you want me to do about it?" My wife said that he should not serving water if he doesn't know how to pour it properly. The waitress, moments later, told him what we had said, merely inches from our tables. Beyond awkward. And, instead of coming over and apologizing, he simply never returned to our table. No more water. The waitress had an attitude with us since we sat down - no idea what we could have done - unsure what was going on - but it was beyond unpleasant. Most of our "table conversation" was about how lousy the staff were acting and how uncomfortable we felt along with how much we couldn't wait to leave. We had shared an appetizer and had no interest in ordering anything else after that. We paid. We left. I feel stupid for tipping them.
