Went on a Friday night, it looked like there was a wait but it only took a few minutes to get seated. The staff was really great. I ordered the chicken on greens which tasted better than it sounded or looked (the grill marks were a bit over the top). My friend got the burger which he didn't really comment on. We shared an order of fries and crack kale. I love crack kale..........I wish it was a bit less oily though, maybe they should let it drain for a bit more. I'm completely sold on Whitman's, and am only happy I live so far away because I'd eat there everyday and would eventually have to be forklifted through a knocked-down wall in my apartment. The decor is really really nice...almost like they tried too hard to be different, but it still worked for me. Started out with the fried pickles and sweet potato fries. I hate pickles, so didn't taste, but the gf loved them. My only negative was the sweet potato fries; a lot of them were burned to icky, tiny crisps. BUUUUUT the burgers were awesome. Turkey burgers with greens and avocado was so flavorful and juicy without being overly heavy. Girlfriend got the Juicy Lucy, which definitely stays true to its name after the first bite enough to yield lots of dirty jokes. This is my bf's favorite place to get burgers because he loves the Revis Burger. I was thoroughly satisfied with my Juicy Lucy burger and enjoyed fried pickles for the first time. Hmmm I am torn here because the burgers were pretty yummy but so damn expensive for the size. We started wih the shishito peppers that were flash fried with lime - they were just okay and kind of a little greesy. We also ordered the crack kale, which was literally drenched in oil. We had a few bites which had great flavor but the chips were so oily you could practically see right thru them! We left almost the whole bowl untouched unfortunately. Moving onto the actual meal - we got the upstate and the jalepeno burgers with a side of blue cheese fries and bowl of local pickles. The fries and pickles were amazing and the burgers were really great too, so it was really starting off with all of that grease that turned us off and the fact that the burgers are quite small for the price. There are so many amazing burger places in the city and this one just doesnt take first place for me. Went there for an early lunch this past Saturday after reading an article on New York Eater called "The Essential Dry Aged Burgers of New York City." They raved about the Mangold burger and our waitress called it a must try burger. She was right, terrific tasting burger, and pretty good fries. Friendly service. Burgers were delicious as everyone says. I got the turkey burger, and my friends got the Upstate burger and the PB&B. We got crack kale & regular fries to share, as well as a pitcher of beer. The crack kale was too greasy and salty, though I'm glad we tried it. They did not give us separate plates / utensils for the fries, so we couldn't dip them in ketchup :( The waitress took too long every time we asked for something, so we didn't even bother to ask for plates or utensils since we would probably finish the fries before she returned to us. We tried to get her attention for a whole 15 minutes just to place our initial drink / beer order. Then it took forever for us to get our water refills. The server was very nice though, but I think overall this place should focus on improving customers' dine-in experience. Overall, I would come back for the great quality burgers and sides. read more

My friend and I went on a Saturday for dinner, we are both pretty big eaters and were able to each order a juicy lucy and fries, and for $12.50 each, it was a quality meal. Burger was quite good, the cheese inside is a great idea and the caramelized onions were a nice touch, and the fries were surprisingly good. Service was good, I don't know why others are complaining, I guess they are hit or miss. They gave us a pitcher of water which was handy. It is a small place so it is kinda packed, not that it should bother people who eat in this area. This is such a cool burger joint! From the moment you walk in this place makes you want to smile. There are sketches on dollars and bev naps on the walk behind the cheshire booth that are pretty good, an old school wooden plaque of James dean and a huge picture of walt Whitman on the brick wall above the stairs heading down to the little dinning room. The decor is crafty. On the brick wall downstairs hangs a translucent window lit from the back so it always looks like the sun is shining out side. It reminds me of a friendly home not a LES restaurant. We came in to fill our tummies before a long night on the town. I am so impressed with the food here! We had the juicy lucy and an all beef sausage. The burger actually tastes flame broiled and the center is filled with cheese! It comes on a sesame sees bun that has so many on it you can't even see the bread. I'm not usually a hot dog girl but I'm glad I tried this one, not greasy, big and fat and comes with a choice of mustards. I saw the " mommas boy " on the menu while we waited for our meal and I'm defiantly going to have that one next time. read more

I found out about this place through Scoutmob.com. So I had to try it. I loved the Juicy Lucy. I also tried the Burger with peanut butter because I like trying different things it was not that bad. It's like a really really nice, quaint, hole in the wall. It's really small, but we had no trouble getting a table, especially for a Thursday night. I didn't feel rushed at all. It's a little cramped, but it adds to the in-someone's-kitchen atmosphere. The food was delicious. We ordered the turkey burger, fries, fried pickles, and cookies and milk. I wish the cookies were warm, and the friend pickles are more like "pickle chips," but the dip they serve them with is so good! Other than that though, the food was really, really good. Whitman's was interesting, a small place with an upstairs and downstairs seating. They serve some really great beer, but limited selection. The burgers are not huge but decent and juicy. I'm a huge SWEET POTATO FRIES GUY. Love SPF I always order them everywhere I go. I give them an A+ for some banging SPF. Other than that if you love burgers and fries try it out. Juicy Lucy was completely flavorless, really needed salt. Crack kale was good but felt sick after the third bite, just felt heavy and greasy. 3.5 Really. I'm not that into burgers and beers, but once in a while when the occasion calls for it, i'll indulge. The space is easy going, relatively comfortable and there wasn't a wait when we arrived. We tried the juicy lucy, cheese steak, the vegetable succotash and the crack kale. To be honest, I wasn't really that interested in the juicy lucy, but i think the fact that it wasn't too busy, it was cooked medium rare, made the burger hot, and dripping with juice. I liked it alot better than I had expected. There were a few reviews that said the burger wasn't ozzing with cheese, i suspect the burger was over cooked. The cheese steak was pretty good with all that cheeze whiz, but after a couple bites I could feel my chest feeling heavy. the vegetable succotash sandwich was hard to eat since it wasn't in a solid form. It was just okay. the crack kale was great for the first 5 bites, but after wards the salt and the oil started to make your lips pucker. i definitely left here feeling like i had a clogged artery. Whitman's serves refreshing all-american food that is reinforced by the patriotic decor on the walls. All of their burgers are short rib served with spicy pickles on a sesame bun. I ordered the juicy lucy which is a burger infused with pimento cheese - decadent to say the least - and my boyfriend ordered the spicy patty which is stuffed with fresh jalapenos. Both burgers were delish. For those of you who can tolerate some flavor, I recommend the spicy. We ordered the crack kale, which lives up to its name: the first taste hooks you. They manage to remove all of the nutrients from kale by frying it. Regardless, who goes to Whitman's if they are attempting to cut calories. read more

I went there last night. It is a small, but cute restaurant which has like a homie/hippie feel. The staff was very nice. I ordered the upstate burger with bacon and fries. I must say for 7 dollars the burger was pretty small, but it was good. The bacon gave it a very smokey taste. The only flaw is that it took pretty long to get my food and it took even longer when I ordered the cookies, but I digress because they actually make the food and cookies fresh. I went there with a AmazonLocal deal so I ended up paying nothing(Yayy) but I left a tip cuz the staff was pretty cool. Been meaning to check this place out for a couple of years. The Hound is awesome--5-stars, juicy, bacon infused, and the homemade potato sticks offer a nice crunch. Maybe a touch small for your more ravenous types. The lemonade was not good--not sure if it was a soapy glass or just bad lemonade. Might be a good idea to replace the big brand soda with Boylans or Bruce Cost. Probably healthier than Black Iron Burger on 5th though that's a fine establishment as well. read more

The Juicy Lucy is worth trying and they have some nice side order options as well b/w deli pickles, great thin cut fries and the crack kale (althought a little greasy... it is still addicting... hence the name). Meal was about 3.5 out of 5, service was about 1.5 out of 5... I think we had to remind the employees what we ordered 3 or 4 times, but overall, they were apologetic about it. I'll chalk it up to it being a new establishment and people still learning their way around. Small dining area of about 4 -5 tables, would be good for a small group looking for a decent dinner under $20. The top floor seems more like a to-go type place, but the downstairs is cute and cozy - love the rooster wallpaper! They have a smaller, but good beer selection. They were so thin, which made the pickle to fried-goodness ratio a little too even for my liking (more pickle please!). Fries were good too! I didn't think I like kale because I've always had it tough, but they salt and bake it and it's dried and kind of like seaweed (which is good in my book!). As a huge advocate of the slow food movement, I'm going to give kudos to Whitmans. The place appears small at first glance, but fret not and don't be deterred - there's additional seating downstairs. Whitmans specializes in burgers but vegetarians should definitely give their menu a chance. Why? Because their single vegetarian entrée and any number of vegetarian sides are worth it! Their $9 succotash Maide-Rite is heavenly; a toasted sandwich filled with cumin roasted organic carrots, fresh corn, edamame and poblano. As for sides, everyone must order the crack kale. No joke. When you order an entrée, unless you opt for the organic fries (don't), a mountain of crunchy, fried kale is piled on your plate in lieu of potato chips. They are PERFECTION. So vegetarian or meat-eater, get the crack kale. When you tire of the greens (though I doubt you will), carnivores can indulge in the famous Juicy Lucy burger that has a melt-in-your-mouth, food-you-can-feel-good-about quality. I'm confident burger connoisseurs will enjoy the experience when they sink their teeth into their grass-fed beef...though the free range chicken sandwich is worth a gander too. Overall, Whitmans offers a comforting, high-quality, foodie experience without the expensive bill. Next time I'll come back I'll taste-test their extensive beer selection while lingering at my computer using their free Wifi...they don't seem to mind in the slightest! read more

Good burgers!!! Juicy Lucy. It was juicy with sauce and grease dripping on my hands. The bun has lots of sesame seed and might be slightly toasted(?). The burger was warm and juicy with a nice crust. I'm not sure if it was the burger juice or the sauce but whatever it was tasted awesome. Chicken burger. Surprisingly juicy also. Crack kale - way too salty for my taste. At first we sat at the counter and they have some air vent blowing air straight at us like a fan which was super annoying. Luckily one of the groups at the table left so we grabbed a table.
