I grew up coming Wholey's for fresh seafood at fair prices. Now coming back as an adult both the freshness and pricing were disappointing. Pricing: Their frozen king crab prices and some other fish were very close to double of what I could get at other markets from the same place of origin/ harvest. Freshness: I bought a bag of their "fresh live" mussels. When I brought them home and put them in a saltwater tub before prepping my meal you can see 80% of them are floaters plus the 8 more (not pictured) that stayed open when I tapped or pressed the shell. If you know mussels you know that general seafood knowledge advises you to discard the floaters since it indicates they're dead. See my photo. read more

I don't know how this place got the reviews, that they got. First misleading reviews on yelp for me. There was no line and I read from the menu what I wanted. 3 crabby patties, 2 orders of fried clams and 1 order of oysters. Looked at my receipt and it said 3 crab cakes. Now, a line is forming getting busy, girl obviously avoiding me, she sees I want her attention. Told her my order again, didn't know how to void and correct the order. Now, she only charged me for 1 sandwich. Manager must of overheard conversation and stepped in to correct the order. He knew she was incompetent. Finally, order is ready...they forgot my oyster order. Not in bag. Had to get the attention of this other woman and she claimed she didn't see it on the order. Manager overheard conversation again and corrected the mistake. This place is smelly, dirty-looking and a real whole in the wall. The oil needed changing, you could see the foam and smell the fishiness. Not worth paying $92 for this food. One big rip off!!! read more

This place feels like an orb of Pittsburgh culture, all wrapped up into this brick and mortar supermarket. This place literally has it all. You can find just about anything you're looking for and you're going to get it at a steep discount. The food quality seems pretty decent. The people that were here to take pride in making sure that the food is properly handled the and refrigerated. I understand why this place has been around 1 million years. All of their signs are hand written, still. Whoever works in their marketing department has gone through a lot of red markers in their time. You can find anything from Maine lobster to Maryland crab here and you know it's legit. I don't know how they do it, but they must have deep connections in the meat industry. A staple of this block! Obviously, the only thing that may bother you when you visit is the smell. It's hard to store this much meat in a large market and not have some smell left behind. read more

This is my kinda place! Fish market, meat market with produce, dry goods, everything you need to feed. The service counter for food moves quick and be ready to order as they are ready to cook. Its cafeteria style with the dining area on the second floor away from the hustle of the Went with fish sandwich with some pawns on the side and corn bread all very good and priced nicely. Wholey's is one of my quintessential Pittsburgh landmarks. It's not only one of my favorite places to buy sushi grade fish and seafood and the occasional meat from their butcher dept; I go to eat their famous fish sandwich and get some made to order sushi from Andy's sushi bar as well. There is a dining room upstairs with plenty of seating available. It is one of my go to spots to bring out of town visitors to get a great feel of Pittsburgh. Ah, Wholey's. How I wish you were in Austin. If you're looking for any kind of fresh fish or 20 different shrimp choices, this is your place. They also have a big meat section, a small produce section, and some other grocery items. What I really love though is getting a huge fried fish sandwich or crab cakes and climbing the skinny staircase to eat upstairs in the dining room. I've been visiting Wholeys for decades, starting back when the Strip was exactly what it started out as: a collection of wholesale businesses. I've always loved it; always will. My kudos goes out to 'D', the African-American doorman making sure customers are wearing masks. A blind customer came to Wholeys today, and D guided him through the store, stopping where the customer wanted to go and helping him get what he needed. That's not part of his job description, but D was incredibly kind to this customer, who was a regular. I told the manager how impressed I was with D, and it also makes Wholey's look good that they hired a man of this caliber. read more

Robert Wholey's most popular attraction seems to be the hot food inside of the store. Unfortunately, since there was a long line, I was short on time and stomach space, I didn't get a chance to try any of the seafood sandwiched I read such good things about. Instead, I tried the lobster rolls they were selling outside. For $7, it was really good for the price. They don't skimp on the lobster meat either. They use big chunks of lobster (including whole pieces of claw meat), which was most likely previously frozen, but it still tasted pretty good. The thing is that it's not that sanitary. The guy making the sammies did change his gloves right after we ordered the roll. But then he handled the cash we gave him, and THEN he grabbed the bread with the same hand! I'm not trying to be a germaphobe here but um...what was the point of changing that glove then?! So if you're willing to turn the other cheek, you'll get a decent lobster roll. I have gotten so many amazing swordfish, tuna, mako shark, etc. The staff will be more than happy to slice off a piece any size that will meet your needs. They don't stop at fish either showing off a variety of meats in the butcher shop and veggies in the produce area. Coincidentally MOST federal holidays are Mondays so if you are a veteran looking to shop/cook for Fourth of July, Memorial Day, or Veterans Day etc. you probably will need to shop a week in advance to get the discount and hope it doesn't spoil. read more

Cool place to visit. The fish sandwiches are great, as are the fried smelts. I also like their lobster rolls, although admittedly, I don't have much to compare it to. I love soft-shell crabs but I didn't care much for their soft-shell crab sandwich; the crabs didn't taste like they had been properly cleaned. This is why I moved to Pittsburgh for a market such as this ... first off its located in the strip district great stores great eateries so its always worth coming to walk around.o But parking can be a hassle no worries here Wholeys has their own lot you can park in while you shop in the store. The parking attendant is a nice sweet man who watches your car ...how do I know he is paying attention because someone hit my car and he had the store page me I love Wholeys anyway go ahead park your car is safe then go on in and you will be treated to a wonderful shopping experience right in front is a small sushi chef ready to make your favorite rolls and such. to one side there is a small hot food counter with fish Sammies and other assorted things such as fries and wings. (there is a nice seating area upstairs so you can sit and enjoy) and then there is the fish counter its the entire length of the store with friendly fish mongers to help you choose in the back are tanks with the still living that can be on your plate later. The fish sellers are so friendly and always helpful I have bought salmon, flounder, tilapia and other assorted fresh fish its always good they also have a nice assortment of frozen fish The fish is a standout... they also have a large meat section. There is also their deli section delish fresh salads we have bought the coleslaw numerous times. They also sell yummy chicken pot pies ( I do not eat meat but son & husband love them) plenty of fresh vegetables and other assorted staples to me the prices seem higher then a regular supermarket but everything always looks nice and fresh and then their is the fresh squeezed orange juice its doesn't come cheap but its squeezed right there in front of you and by a real honest to goodness Wholey he is super friendly and you just feel good buying his juice. This was a fun place to visit on our brief trip through Pittsburgh. We enjoyed walking around the fish market, checking out what was fresh, as well as seeing the grocery store side. We ate lunch from the hot bar area, which was delicious but not the healthiest thing. I got a po'boy with shrimp, coleslaw and chips on the side. We also tried the lobster mac and cheese. The portions are huge and I don't think I was hungry for dinner until MUCH later that night. The seating area is up some stairs and surprisingly big. There are signs everywhere indicating that they hope you have a pleasant experience and to let someone know if things aren't tidy. An employee was putting fresh sheets of brown paper on the tables and wiping everything up. There were also several different condiment and flatware stations. I love that we stopped by this long-standing Pittsburgh gem. I just probably picked up a piece of fruit of something from the grocery section to go with my meal! ;) read more

Yet another staple in the strip district in Pittsburgh that we always have to visit and peruse each aisle just to see what we may have missed on our last visit. To some it may seem like the aisles are small and hard to get around because it's usually pretty busy but I find it to be part of the charm of shopping here. It feels like old, steel town type shopping. They have case after case of fresh and frozen seafood to include crab legs, lobster tail, shrimp, stone crab claws, mussels, squid and various fresh fish. Speaking of fresh, they have live tanks containing lobster and several types of live fish that when purchased, will be cleaned and fileted right at the counter. They have plenty of fresh beef, pork and chicken products and of course your typical grocery items to include fresh fruits and veggies. This may surprise some but they have a fresh sushi counter where you can purchase sushi which is absolutely delicious. It's actually called Andy's Sushi but is just a counter space area where he operates inside the store. Again, it may be surprising but it's pretty damn tasty sushi. When in Pittsburgh, make this one of your stops in the district. You'll enjoy the experience. read more

What a great place not just to buy seafood to take home and cook yourself but also a great place to sit down and eat some excellent fried or grilled seafood. I only wish they were open later for dinner. Love the $3 fried calamari, $2.50 fried clams, and smelt by the quarter pound. A variety of fish and chips available too. Lunch at the outdoor grill looks really good too with grilled to order Salmon and seared Ahi. I am not a too big fan of the grimy strip district in the Burgh. When it comes to buying fresh fish or even meats, great place to go. For whatever reason I build an appetite when shopping and their small food court offers some relief. I only tried it once but I was pretty happy. Not too crazy about all the fried foods, but the cod was spot on. I ordered the Wholey Moley which was 1 lb of Icelandic Cod: Perfect! They have an upstairs area where you can enjoy your food. Everything very simple and nothing to write home about. However, my enjoyment was the Cod which was hot, steamy, juicy, large and inexpensive. A great treat! read more

Wonderful place for delicious seafood, whether onsite or to go! We pretty much always stop here whenever we're in Pittsburgh for the fried cod sandwich and fried smelts. We'll also frequently opt for the lobster crab bisque, fried shrimp, and/or lobster mac and cheese. In addition, we almost invariably come home with some of the mac and cheese and bisque to go! The fried seafood is cooked perfectly - not too oily, not too dry, and delicious with any of the sauces they offer. Mac and cheese and bisque are great too, though a little rich for my taste. Aside from the prepared foods, it's your typical seafood market and grocery store with pretty reasonable prices. We're usually only in town a few days, though, so we don't typically buy anything aside from the prepared foods. read more

Good spot for fish on a Friday in Lent...but it isn't great. Wholey's has the reputation and history...and an assembly line approach to the large lunch crowds that moves a lot of product. The food...is good, not great. The fish (deep fried Atlantic cod) just a bit too...greasy, but certainly edible. Fries...okay. The soup selection was an unfortunately thin lobster bisque. To me it's kind of something you gotta do..but then you're reminded why you don't do it more often. read more

A friend purchased a $100.00 gift card as a Christmas gift for my daughter. When she checked out she was informed that the card was never activated. She provided a receipt showing that the card was activated and spoke to the manager who advised her after reviewing that there was nothing she could do since the gift card was showing already $18 used which was never used by my daughter or my friend. So essentially we are out $100.00 and nothing will be done to rectify the issue. I will never shop at this establishment again. My question is how does a gift card never activated get used? Wholey is a Strip District classic, and it's not hard to see why with their delicious fish sandwich. During our Saturday errands, we stopped in to split an oyster po' boy and a cod sandwich. Because its Wholey's anniversary, we got free chips. The oyster po' boy was great, but some bites were chewy and a little off-putting. The cod sandwich was terrific. The chips were good, but inconsistently seasoned so you get one bite that's bland and another that's super salty. Old bay is the secret to tastier chips. The fish market itself can be hit and miss though. We've gotten excellent fish and fish that was off after a day. read more
