HOW is this business still in operation? HOW are they doing it???? Even if I was a starving UC Berkeley student..................... I STILL would not spend a dime here! Came by after work because I had a craving for some Hawaiian bbq and didn't feel like sitting in traffic to go to my regular spot. I walked in and nobody else was inside. That should have been the first red flag, but I figured it was slow due to the holidays. Ordered the seafood combo plate with deep fried fish and shrimp and bbq short ribs, a dish that I order regularly at many different Hawaiian bbq spots. I'm not a fan of macaroni salad, so I asked the lady at the register if I could sub it for salad. I saw a few plates with side salads on Yelp and figured that I could do it. The lady at the register just proceeded to give me a blank stare. Okay, let's try this again. WHAT can I sub for the macaroni salad? She says broccoli. Really? BROCCOLI? Okay, whatever. I did it. But what she failed to mention was that there was an additional charge for it. Oh well, already ordered it. I ended up getting a spam musubi too. Went to sit down and most of the tables were dirty. Finally found a table that looked okay, but when I went to rest my arm on the table, it felt ridiculously sticky. Yuck. If nobody is in here, why isn't there anyone taking the time to wipe down the dirty ass table tops? My food arrives and it actually looks delicious. Looks... delicious. LOOKS. Just "LOOKS". Looks... are deceiving. VERY deceiving. Let's break down this disastrous meal: *FROZEN seafood! WTFAAACK? Why are you serving me frozen stuff? I can buy that at the grocery store! And, if that wasn't enough: *The fish and shrimp were OVER fried! Sh*t was brick hard and probably could have broken a window if I had thrown it at something. *BBQ Short ribs were like 80% FAT! Good GAWD, my effing jaws were hurting from chewing on these damn short ribs for so long! You would think that all of that chewing would result in me actually being able to swallow the damn thing, but most of it got spit out. I just... I couldn't do it. *The spam musubi should be renamed to rice musubi!!! That was basically all that I tasted! Hella rice, and the little bit of spam that I did taste was super rubbery. It was just... a mess. Could not eat this either. *ONE piece of broccoli as my replacement for the macaroni salad. Um, really? And you wanna charge extra for that?! But it honestly didn't matter in the end because this meal was horrific. This food was NOT fresh and tasted like it had been cooked in 1,000 year old oil. I literally couldn't eat it. It was inedible, no exaggeration folks! And to top it off, their establishment is just dirty. I went to the restroom and there were ants crawling all over the place. On the walls, around the sink, on the floor, and in the trash can. LAWD! Don't let me see their last health inspection! I don't even WANNA see it. But anyways, this was my first and last experience here. It's a one and done for me. If you know what's good for you, PLEASE avoid this place at all costs. read more

A hidden gem in Berkeley. Its not easy finding laulau in the mainland, let alone pork laulau that tastes so dang juicy and tender. My go-to orders are chicken katsu, BBQ chicken, and grilled garlic fish, but TBH i've yet to order anything off their menu that wasn't bomb. The mac salad here is also one of the best. I am a very big fan, of LOCO MOCO, and often, I have this, when I am in Hawaii. I go twice a year at least! I used to really like this place. Nowhere else can you find such cheap short rib. Macaroni salad and spam musubi are pretty good too. I mean, yeah, once I did end up with massive shits right before a final exam, but it was totally worth it. However, a few days ago, I went with a friend and noted that they raised the prices to more standard Berkeley prices. This may have been fine, but the meat also tasted worse. This is definitely a great dish for any occasion, whether it be dinner or a picnic with friends. The beef short rib marinade was so savory and sweet and had the right amount of saltiness to where I didn't feel thirsty after eating it. Some parts of the short rib did have more tendon, which made it harder to eat with a fork but just go in with your hands and it makes the eating experience more fun! Pleasantly surprised with this place. Reviews on Yelp didn't match in my opinion. A bit on the pricy side but the portions are generous. The quality isn't the highest standard but they are one of the only Hawaiian BBQ joints in Berkeley. I always go for the bbq short rib plate because it's my favorite, the sauce is quite good with a sweet thick teriyaki. The ribs are a bit tough but it comes with three for the regular sized meal. It's served on a bed of cabbage with two mounds of white rice and macaroni salad. The macaroni salad is usually overcooked and soft but it satisfies the craving with lots of mayo. When I'm extra hungry, I also go for a spam musibi which is fried spam on top of rice with a seaweed wrap. I used to grab food from here at least once a week back in college! Of course, I had to stop by again on my recent trip to the Bay and relive my college days haha. Surprised I haven't left a review yet so here it goes... Let me just start by saying this is a very much a no frills type of eatery. The mini size feeds me for two meals. - Pork Lau Lau: I never starting ordering this (or even knew what it was) until I came back from a Hawaii trip, but I'm soo so glad I did! The pork is so tender and moist it just melts in your mouth, and the taro leaves have so much flavor...they are naturally very earthy + aromatic, but also soak up all the juices from the pork. The portions are defs smaller than the Katsu, but I often opt for this over the Katsu if I'm craving something very Hawaiian, which is pretty much always haha. - Spam Musubi: Such a comfort food! They are a bit too generous with the rice but it makes for such a hearty snack/mini meal. - BBQ Chicken: Simple, juicy, and flavorful. And consistently good quality chicken. I don't order this too often but definitely a good option if you're itching for something healthy-ish. - Grilled Fish: Another good option if you're looking for something healthy-ish. I'm a big fan of the garlic sauce they use on the fish! So fragrant and flavorful. - Hawaiian Mac Salad: This is a default side with almost all the meals, in addition to white rice. Typically wouldn't call out such a basic side but they do it so well here! Perfect amount of creaminess + zestiness to wash down some of the heavier meats. My bf loves mixing some sriracha in with his, and for some reason we both prefer the mac here over all the places we tried in Hawaii You can also opt to replace mac salad with veggies if you're not a fan of carbs on carbs. What made it even harder was that they have specials posted on their counter. One was any two items for $4.05. You could choose from a hamburger (add $0.25 more to add cheese), spam musubi, fountain drink or fries. They also had a deal where you could buy two chicken sandwiches (grilled or fried) for $3.25! I wasn't quite sure what to make of these deals so I went with the Wiki Wiki BBQ plate (short ribs, teriyaki steak, and BBQ chicken) as well as a spam musubi. My coworker went with the $4.05 deal and got a hamburger and spam musubi. His order came out first so he gave me the spam musubi so we could eat together. He said the burger was pretty good. I ate my first spam musubi and loved it. I can tell though why my parents kept me away from SPAM because of the salt and fattiness. My order was called and I really enjoyed the teriyaki steak and short ribs. The chicken was okay. I also liked their macaroni salad. This plate was a bit on the pricier side of the menu but there was enough leftovers to give to my friend to have for dinner. I ordered food to be picked up at the restaurant through DoorDash. My DoorDash app for some reason didn't show my name or order number on my order details. I showed the older man what the app was giving me. He refused to give the food, rightfully so. I understand that identifying details in regard to your order must be shown. So I go through my email, present him with the confirmation email that shows my name, the name of the restaurant, the date and time. I figured that would suffice. He refused. Kept scolding me and raising his voice on what the app should say, the name and order number. While I understand his logic, I could not understand why we couldn't resolve this by other means rather than making the situation bigger than it needed to be. I never raised my voice, I was courteous. He eventually gives me my food, but continues to scold me that next time I need to show the name and order number. Bro, I'm not your kid. The menu is similar to what you would get at an L&L. The food is fast, cheap and decent for the price. If you're in a hurry and you want something filling and cheap, you can't go wrong with island fare. The only drawback for us, was that the place could use a little cleaning up. The door to the bathroom had dirty fingerprints all over and didn't seem to have been wiped for some time, which made me leery about using it. I know the place was semi busy but there was food on the floor as well. The soda fountain was semi functioning, and probably needed to have some maintenance done.
