Let me open with this: I'm not so low-brow that I don't understand quality food establishments change their menus from lunch to dinner. If you can't understand the hour of time between menus, Culver's isn't very far down the road. In addition to the above, their beet salad is one of the best I've ever had, and I live in South Florida. Not every establishment serves salad in a bowl; It's Wild Roots, not the Olive Garden. Again, that establishment would be not much further down the road, either. Check close to a mall or by the Dollar Store. Now, to the bulk of the review for Wild Roots: We visit Milwaukee to see our kids several times per year. I know good burgers because I do my due diligence before I travel anywhere. The Duck Fat Burger is one of the best burgers I've found in Milwaukee, and I've eaten over 50 different burgers in the last few years (54 because I blog about burgers and brunches). If there's even a mediocre burger in Milwaukee, I've tried it. Even Reddit is behind on knowing about Wild Roots, but I'm not complaining because the place would be so busy that it would require a reservation. Though I come here for the burgers, the desserts are absolutely incredible, as well. Service is top notch, and the bathrooms are always clean. No one would consider this place expensive unless they were broke. Wild Roots is awesome and needs the recognition it deserves. read more

Stopped by for brunch with friends. I wish I remembered our servers name as he was an absolute delight. I just remember he told us he was from Mexico City. We started with some beverages, mimosas and bloody Mary's. Delicious! I had the chicken and waffle and asked for a fried egg on top. It was delicious. Crispy, salty and sweet with runny egg yolk. Edited for spelling. Wild Roots is one of my favorite restaurants in the greater Milwaukee area. The chef is so creative. The menu changes often which is a good and bad thing for me. I fall in love with items and then they disappear. Their specials are always big hitters. Their burgers of the week change all the time. I have had so many different items from here and have never once not liked what was ordered. Their oysters are decent for the price. Their apps and entrees are SO GOOD. and locally sourced. Their burger are delicious and very filling. The hangar steak is really good if it's ever on special. I drove 35 minutes for their Banh mi sandwich. Try anything and everything!! Darn, I was really hoping this would be better than it was. Nothing really special about this place unfortunately. Went for brunch and was not impressed. I just had the classic 2 egg breakfast and my friend had the schnitzel. Mine was ok, toast was a bit overdone and not hot so trying to put the butter on was impossible as it wouldn't melt. Potatoes & eggs were meh, sausage was actually pretty good. I tried a bite of the schnitzel and that didn't seem to bad but I can't really comment on that too much, sorry! The loaded bloody was ok, the waitress made it sound pretty awesome but the portions of snacks they give you with the bloody are pretty small. The cheese was hard on one end and the sausage was barely bite size. The taste wasn't too bad but overall it's nothing spectacular. I was looking forward to trying this place as it's in walking distance from my house. This is a small place on the popular strip of Becher street in West Allis and the vibes are cozy. The food is made with local and seasonal ingredients and I have yet to be disappointed by anything I've ordered. I would recommend ordering off the specials menu if something peaks your interest! Food is good but service is very slow. It took 30 minutes to get a noodle bowl and a salad with only two other patrons in the restaurant. Also there are no condiments available outside of what comes on the actual meal. You cannot get siracha or dipping sauces of any kind. I'm quite on the fence about how to score Wild Roots. The food was really delicious 90% of the time and then 10% of the time it was inedible. Let me explain further, this was easily one of the most delicious benedicts that I've ever had the joy of putting in my belly. The accompanying potatoes were delicious too... until they were inedible. Some of the pieces of potato smelled and tasted moldy. It's the taste that humans are programmed to reject as food. Ick. I'm also on the fence because of the service. Our server was overall inattentive. My friend and I were left for elongated periods of time without anything to drink and were served food without needed utensils or condiments and were therefore unable to eat until those things were brought to us. My friend and I were one of four tables, it wasn't a busy time for the restaurant. Two things have stuck with me. The food here is really quite delicious. And, when I was served the hot tea that I ordered I had to wait until the server came back after I flagged her down to ask for some honey. The response was something like "I'll have to go downstairs and it'll be a minute." I don't think that I've ever heard a server say something like that. Rather, it's typical for servers to bring you the tea or coffee and ask what accompaniments that you'd like or just bring all accompaniments when they bring you the item itself. read more

First time here. Meh... Service was terrible and slow. I asked about Nasty Bits. I was given a description similar to that of roasted Spam. My schnitzel was tough, and even tougher to cut through with a butter knife. My friends ordered the special (pictured below). When it arrived, there was no bun. It was served on sour dough bread. When asked why it wasn't served like the Instagram photo, we were told, "That's how chef is serving it". 10 minutes later, the next table had this special served as it appears in the photo, with a bun. First time but not the last! Slow start to a great dinner. It was a little bit of a wait but the quality of the food made up for it in a big way. One of the specials tonight was a roasted tomato soup which was smooth and velvety without cream. We had the "vegan" curry with chicken and the steak and frites. The curry was full of fresh and perfectly sautéed vegetables in a light curry flavored coconut broth with grilled chicken and rice noodles. The steak was a perfectly seasoned and crusted hanger steak with home made creamed spinach and crunchy fries. Lets not even start about the cocktails! Update: Have to admit couldn't stay away. Our daughter and husband were in town so within 6 days of our first visit we went for seconds. I had the same, steak frites just to see how consistent they are. Spot on ! My wife and daughter had the gnocchi. Fantastic they both cleaned their plate. My son in law had the carbonara and again a clean plate. Fantastic food for a reasonable price!! And now the cocktails. Loveee! Went here for my birthday in November and again today and was not disappointed. On my birthday, I ordered their special which was a hangar steak and risotto -- cooked perfectly. Today, I ordered the aged duck breast with crispy, flavorful skin and it was so tender, I honestly probably didn't even need my knife. We also tried the crab cake and it was delicious. The fried egg on top just added a nice richness and the arugula was a refreshing crunch that balanced out the creamy textures. I specifically came back to this restaurant for the Gnocchi. I've lived in NYC, Tampa Bay and now Chicago and I can tell you I've had many gnocchi dishes...The one at Wild Roots is by far the best I've ever had. My bestie and I went here on. Friday night for just a few drinks and a "nosh". The cocktails were good and our server was excellent. We ordered the $16 cheese board and it came with 3 wedges of differing variety, strawberry jam, a few candied pecans and.... 2 pieces of plan white toast cut in half. The toast was disappointing. Went there last night for my birthday dinner. Had a party of five to celebrate. From the minute we walked in we were greeted by Gabby, who also turned out to be our waitress. She was superb, knowledgeable, friendly, and ready to go the extra mile. Four of us had the special of the night which was a tenderloin filet with polenta and a blue cheese sauce which was to die for. My wife had the strip steak and fries and she raved about it. For dessert we had the bread pudding which was large enough for the five of us to share. Chocolate deliciousness with 2 scoops of ice cream and a touch of whipped cream. One of us is in a wheelchair and the entire staff bent over backwards to insure her comfort. There is no doubt that I will be visiting again and again, enjoying the food and hospitality.
