*Be careful that most of the bad reviews were from the former Chinese place in the same location. * My friends and I were cravings for decent Hawaiian barbeque so we went to this new Hawaiian bbq place and decided to give this a try. Although they only have limited seating, the place is clean, cozy, and comfortable. Street parking is very easy. We had the following dishes: Hawaii BBQ Wagyu Beef: OMG, this is definitely my favorite dish. The owner told us that their goal is to bring premium meat and bring it into Hawaiian bbq. They use Australian Waygu beef which is so much better than American Wagyu. When they were stir-frying the Waygu beef, the aroma is all over the restaurant. Oh and don't forget the mix the egg yolk and add some extra richness to the dish :)) Hawaii Fried Fish & Hawaii Chicken Katsu: I liked them both too! Very crispy and the secret sauce added some extra spiciness to the fried fish and chicken. We also order Musubi and I love the thick cut of the spam. The owner is also super friendly. We found this hole in the wall through Yelp after visiting Christmas Tree Lane, and we're glad we did! It's small inside, but the food was great (if you like shrimp, get a plate with that included - it was peppered perfectly). The gentlemen running it couldn't have been nicer, and as everyone has said, the portions are huge so we don't need to worry about lunch tomorrow. Definitely a little hidden gem. read more

I've driven by this place quite a few times with the intention of trying it and finally did. I am slightly disappointed. Quality - One thing me and a friend noticed here was the quality of food was high. The ingredients themselves were fresh and good. Everything was cooked perfectly and juicy as well. This was not the problem. Flavor - This is where things didn't live up to expectation. Most the items were fairly bland. The Katsu was juicy, crunchy, great texture, but despite both of those being much higher than L&L's, the blandness makes it worse overall. The quality ingredients don't mean much if they aren't seasoned well. The same could be said about the shrimp. They were cooked well, juicy, but bland also. Mac salad was fairly meh as well. It was on par with super market macaroni salad. Service - This was fairly good and friendly. Not much to say other than that. I feel like given the good price and quality ingredients, this place could do better. They have 3 out of 4 things that could make this place great, hopefully they up their game on the flavor department. read more

There's a tablet on table outside the restaurant...that's where you order. After I ordered I went inside...I wasn't greeted but that's a Californian thing...people don't talk. As I sat inside to wait on my food I saw a couple stopped briefly in front of the store then they walk by and heard them say they didn't want to use the tablet to order (too complicated). For me it wasn't complicated but older generations will not be too fund of using a tablet to order. Food- it was ok...5 out of 10...food wasn't really that fresh...tasted old. The pasta salad and meat sauce was good. I won't return but worth a try. read more

Delicious Hawaiian food that I get about every two or three weeks. There's a ton of food given. I like the short rib and barbecue chicken combination with macaroni, salad and rice. The sauce is super yummy and the owner really nice. read more

The bbq chicken was excellent and tasty and they had a couple of home made sauces that made everything next level. But it was the wagyu beef that just amazed me. One of the best Spam Misubis I've ever had! It was warm and perfectly crispy, perfect amount of sauce (not overpowering) and perfect amount of rice. The fried fish was also very good imho. They have party platters too if you ever need to cater a party or work function. My only suggestion is consider adding a Spam Misubi party platter!! Would definitely visit again! My boyfriend and I were in San Carlos visiting family. We had just gotten off the plane and needed something quick and easy for a late lunch. We walked past this place and it had a big "Grand Opening" sign outside. We love Hawaiian BBQ and have an awesome place we go to back in KC. We decided to check this place out. We split the BBQ chicken. It came with the huge scoops of rice and the macaroni salad. The chicken was good and had a nice flavor. Overall it was a good meal and nice to split with someone else since there was so much food. It definitely held us over. Staff was friendly. The space overall is small and only has two tables inside so if you go, I'd recommend going with one other person or picking up if for larger groups. read more

Alright where to begin... First, wagyu beef....why oh why would you overcook these. Based on the pictures that I've seen on display for these I was expecting slices of medium rare to medium; unfortunately what I received was anything but. I really hope that whatever it was that I got was just an exception because these were some incredibly dry overcooked pieces of beef. Wagyu in itself is incredibly fatty to the point that it requires just a few seconds to cook especially if it gets sliced into deli style cuts. When it is overcooked, these cuts of meat become no different from some cheap cuts of beef because all the fats in between is gone. The only upsides was the decent egg, mac salad and the sauce that came with the meal (for the meat). Maybe I'll try it again next time. I really hope that the meat would be less overcooked read more

Pros: -Super easy street parking -They have a good range of options such as beef, shrimp, fish, and chicken -The serving size is generous I typically order chicken katsu, teriyaki chicken, or short ribs at Hawaiian BBQ spots but my favorite here was the fried fish. Cons: -Restaurant is on the smaller side so it's better for takeout but Hawaiian BBQ places are known more for to-go orders. I was surprised I didn't see chicken teriyaki or short ribs on the menu but they do have wagyu beef which was different and unique! read more

The meals were a bit peppery tonight but that's OK since I like pepper. The chicken was also sliced differently than before but tasted fine. Second time coming here and the order wasn't what I expected, again. In my first visit here the wagyu beef was entirely fat and contained no meat. I understand that wagyu is high in fat but there wasn't a single piece of beef in the order. It was as if they gave me all the pieces that they couldn't sell or the last of what they had. (Could've told me they were out that day) Today I ordered a few different items , one of which was a side order of Macaroni . They literally gave me a salad that had a few macaroni noodles . Very disappointed in this place. Why do they continue to pull a fast one on the customer? As if we aren't going to notice or post the disappointment in service. Six of us were here playing games and hanging out, so we decided to order takeout from William BBQ for the first time (for all of us) tonight. This is a tiny Hawaiian BBQ shop on the South side of San Carlos (in the location which used to house the relocated Flower Drum for a while.) I have to imagine they're close to 100% takeout and delivery. They offer fairly standard Hawaiian BBQ fare. Meal plates with two big scoops of whit rice, a scoop or macaroni salad, broccoli, and a meat or two served over cabbage (I think it might have been a slaw, but not 100% sure if it was dressed or it was just the runoff from the mac salad..) Among our group, we tried the following meats: Short ribs - No one was thrilled with these, but to be fair, I think this crowd wasn't expecting the right thing. Yes, there are lots of bones and the meat is a little tough and there's going to be some fat and sinew connecting the meat to the bones. That's what short ribs are.. Having said that, these were just okay. BBQ Chicken - Solid choice. Not overcooked, good gty of meat, and a sweet bbq sauce. Wagyu beef - Thin sliced, almost shredded beef. I think this was the best of the meat selections. Grilled shrimp - I didn't try this, but everyone who did was very happy with it. Chicken Katsu - Well cooked, but bland. Without sauce, I wouldn't eat it. With sauce, it's ok. Solid macaroni salad, not overdressed, not too sweet. Broccoli was really good. It would be great if they would make it easier to get more broccoli and less rice (they said they would do it but failed to actually deliver on that promise tonight) because this is already a fairly heavy meal and I'd love to get more veg and less carb. Cabbage slaw(?) - Slaw or not, it was a nice surprise to find this hiding beneath the meat. It added some crunch and more veg to the meal. So overall, I think this is a pretty solid place if you're in the mood for this style of food. Personally, I'll stick with the BBQ chicken and Wagyu beef, and try again for more broccoli instead of that second scoop of rice. read more

You can get a typical Hawaiian meal that comes with entree plus macaroni salad, or you can get a bowl that has broccoli instead of salad. I got the bowl with Hawaiian barbecue chicken. The chicken was tasty and a decent serving size, and the rice soaks up the sauce nicely. There were only a few crowns of broccoli but they were cooked but crunchy. What an incredible addition to the community. The prices and portions are unbelievable, the musubi is thick cut with a little pork floss to make you feel like you're standing in a Maui convenience store, and the owner is one of the friendliest folks I've met all year. In addition to trying to give us free beverages, the owner insisted that we missed out on the best meat on the menu and so grilled a couple fresh slabs of kalbi for us that had the flavor and marbling of wagyu. Large quantity--they pile on the meat, give hefty scoops of rice and macaroni salad but skimp on the broccoli which is appropriate for a bbq place. We tried the wagyu beef, chicken katsu, grilled shrimp and bbq chicken--all tasted great. Rice was fresh, sticky enough to form small clumps while retaining the integrity of the individual grains. Sadly, we're crossing out this place. There is likely shellfish cross contamination which triggered an allergic reaction when my husband ate the beef. I also had little bumps on my tongue which usually forms when certain produce are not diligently washed. Finally got a chance to try this relatively new place and had the BBQ chicken plate. The chicken is cut thin which makes it a bit stringy when you eat it. The BBQ sauce didn't wow me but it also didn't kill me with salt. Mac salad was good. Overall, not the BBQ chicken I know from Hawai'i with the juicy thighs and flavorful sauces.
