I have been eating maple donuts--especially maple bars and old-fashioned maples--for roughly six years and have never had a bad experience until today. This morning's visit was deeply disappointing, as both the maple bar and the old-fashioned maple were, unfortunately, the worst I have ever had. The flavor and quality were so far below what I'm used to that I could not finish them and ultimately had to throw them away. Given my long history of enjoying maple donuts elsewhere without any issues, it was surprising and frustrating to encounter this level of quality today. Usually on my way to and from the 110 or 210 freeways. Their donuts are okay. Not sure if it's the freshest despite the person there telling me that it's made daily. Well, daily can mean 2am when it's made, and sitting behind the counter until 6pm when I purchased. That's still considered daily. I like donuts, but just not everyday. This location always has a good variety. I enjoy the glazed, and the maple bars the most. I'm not too much into the colorful icing donuts with all the sprinkles unless if it was during Halloween or Christmas time. The coffee is decent too. Of course the coffee goes with a jelly donut. No, I'm not policeman! Hahaha. Anyhow, there's always spaces to park in the front, and it's convenient going in and out as it's also close to the 110 freeway. Listen to this! I just came out of that Winchelles in south Pasadena and was mistreated by the stupid and condescending cashier or manager. He had a thick accent and glasses. He was insulted when I told him his disgusting donuts were stale!!! Someone is disturbed because I mention the truth. He starts DISAGREEING with me and I then said they're stale every time I go in there. I asked him if he had anything fresher. He finally gives me one raised donut and I give him my cake donut I had broken in half. He continues ARGUING "look it is soft!" And presses it. I said "Not to me". It's stale. He said we "made them in the morning". I said "well that was the morning" it's FIVE PM NOW. No donut in the afternoon is fresh when made in the morning. My friends and I used to meet up at the bar that used to be in the same shopping center, and we would stop by hear afterwards to get some donuts to go. It's been a few years since I have been back. I'd been craving an apple fritter and Winchell's has always had the best. I stopped by on a Sunday morning at 7 a.m. There was one person in side. There was tape and signs to enforce social distancing as well as hand sanitizer. The place was very clean and well kept. There was a large assortment of donuts to choose from. However, I didn't see any apple fritters in the display case. I asked the girl if they had any and she said she would check. She came back and handed me a bag and said, "Here you go. It's still warm." I was so thrilled! I thanked her and paid. When I got back in my car I had to take a bite because it was my first time having an apple fritter straight from the oven. OMG! Meh... I didn't like the Boston crème donut. Tasted boring and wasn't a real custard. Was early in the morning, and may have been fresh, but tasted dry and day old. I have been coming to this Winchell's for years. I am not a donut lover but my mom is! I always have to stop by on my way home after hanging out with friends in LA. This place is 24 hours so it really dont matter what time I show up. Since I always come at late night, theres hardly anyone here and more variety of donuts are found. Its usually always the same guy working and he is the only one here. He has to do everything which can be crazy at times but he does it well. He is very nice and friendly. I dont drink coffee but my mom loves the coffee here with all her favorite donuts. The facility is kept clean but can be messy sometimes because I do notice some homeless people coming in at late hour. Whenever I'm in my old hometown of Pasadena, I always go to South Pasadena to visit. I was craving donuts, so I decided to visit Winchell's on Fair Oaks Ave. it's located at a shopping center and just a heads up; in my opinion parking is somewhat limited, depending on what store you are going and what time of day. When I entered, I was welcomed by the friendly person behind the counter. I ordered an old fashioned chocolate and chocolate with peanuts donuts. I wanted something to drink, so I asked if they had Large Chocolate milk; they ran out. I asked how much was the small size of apple juice. He told me it was $1.65. To me that was a bit expensive to charge that amount for a small size. So I was ended up getting 2 donuts instead. My overall experience was okay and the customer service was good. Just my opinion, some prices should be a bit lowered, considering what is going on and some people are on a budget. I was disappointed that I couldn't get a drink for value. I will continue to come to Winchell's for their donuts, but I'm not sure if I would spend an extra $ for their drinks; maybe if I feel like it. In getting back to basics and not following what's trending with morning eats/coffee, it's nice to fall back and patronize a long standing business with years to back it up. It's become my "Friday Rewards" to indulge in a well made donut along with piping hot roast (black). Indulge as in probably a oven baked donut with pineapple fill and a gourmet cronut LOL, hey it's only one day out of the week, right. Selection of donuts present well behind counter and typically arranged in color sequence such as sprinkles, sugar coloring, icing, fills, powder, muffins, sesame quesadilla, cronuts, mini fritters. Yes, mini fritters. I frequent early morning hour long before roosters are up making noise and display case is already filled to capacity. Have you ever experienced a donut shop with a empty display of donuts? I know it's sad. You won't find anything like that at this location. Two person operation with Bertha at the helm who will greet you with a smile and eventually get to know you by your first name. Menu also offers breakfast sandwiches and that will delay you a little if you're in a hurry. Baker will stop his duties and help Bertha with customers to help ease any delays. It's fast track at this location considering most customers are in route to work and having easy access to S/B 110 fwy is A+ for that early morning person. I recommend experiencing freshly made orange juice less that fancy bottle look trending at other retail outlets. You get a generic medium plastic cup with lid and a quality made juice without a hefty price tag. Other freshly squeezed juices available but are subject to change. OJ is a for sure hit. I'm sure if you let Bertha know about a particular juice served in the past, she can make it happen for the following day. Basic coffee served with creamers off to the side. Very little sitting space available and no restrooms. Note - these storefront doors are positioned to swing in and not out. My son and I have been going here since he was just a tiny one while living on Mockingbird Ln and we ordered donuts and coffee and hot chocolate and sit and watch people coming in and out of parking spots. We have never been disappointed and they always have fancy schmancy sprinkle donuts, which is his favorite. During Halloween we come here especially to get the Halloween decorated donuts. WORKERS REFUSE TO WEAR MASKS I asked the guy baking the donuts where his mask was and he pretended not to understand me while walking around the whole place without a mask grinning and laughing. When I asked why, they lied about him having lung issues (if that were true, he shouldn't be around food during a pandemic!) The worker in the back categorically refused to wear the mask and the worker in the front gave me attitude about the whole situation, weirdly enough even before the mask issue happened anytime I asked a question she gave me a look like I was crazy. Hmm......well I could not resist trying their $5 special which includes any bagel sandwich, a fountain soda, and a bag of chips. I decided to get the chicken sandwich. If you want a very unhealthy chicken sandwich, this is the place for you. I mean it is a donut shop after all filled with "large" workers. I was watching the lady prepare the sandwich. First, she lathered it in salt and pepper. Then, they added cheese and bacon and lots of it. Finally, they toasted everything together and finally added the gucamole. This is a chicken sandwich that is full of calories. To top it off, I had to pay extra for the orange juice. This place ha lost to me and my adult son with autism, as customers. My son has an obsession with coffee stir sticks. The man complained about my son taking some sticks. I offered to pay for the sticks and the man said, $1 dollar! Then I asked the real price of a box of stir sticks and they told me it was $35 dollars. I said, I'm happy to pay the actual price of the coffee stir sticks. I looked online and it's average 11 dollars. His demanding attitude towards me and lack of compassion towards my son was appalling! He chose one dollar to be punitive and insulting. I offered to be fair and pay the actual price. It was ironic that he used the money from the tip jar to make change for my $ 1 dollar purchase, it's money I had put in the jar! I was very unpleasantly surprised by this particular store. The donuts look great, but when we asked for apple fritters "to go", they were about a third of the size as the ones on display. Therefore, this is a classic bait and switch; and since I have found this not to be true at other Winchell's stores - hopefully a practice confined to this South Pasadena location. It's been a while since I have been to any Winchell's, but I visited this Winchell's this morning and had a couple of donuts. The donuts I had were terrible. They were tasteless. When I was younger (1970s) Winchell's donuts made the greatest tasting donut anywhere! Apparently not anymore. I know it's just a donut, but the donuts I had today tasted so poorly made. It's like they stopped caring about making a quality donut. The donuts had a cheap taste to them. Full of mostly just air. No substance. What happened? I'll answer that. They've stopped focusing on making just donuts. Winchell's has expanded their product line to include Deli sandwiches, bagels, breakfast sandwiches, specialty drinks etc. This is part of the problem. Winchell's is trying to do too many things when they should be concentrating on getting back to making a quality donut again like they once did before they expanded their product line. Glendora, CA has a donut shop called "The Donut Man" on Foothill Blvd. Any day of the week, all day long, a constant line of people waiting to buy their donuts (and donuts and coffee is all they offer). People are willing to stand in the long line at The Donut Man for a reason... their donuts are excellent. Quality donuts is why The Donut Man is so successful... they are extremely good at one thing: Making a QUALITY DONUT! The Donut Man is not trying to sell you a variety of things like deli sandwiches, bagels, breakfast sandwiches, specialty drinks etc. Winchell's needs to get back to basics and adopt the "In 'N' Out Burger" business model which is... don't have a lot of menu choices. Keep the menu simple. Only offer a few things but do those few things exceptionally well. In Winchell's case, concentrate on making donuts and ONLY donuts!
