It's been a while since I have been to any Winchell's, but I visited this Winchell's this morning and had a couple of donuts. The donuts I had were terrible. They were tasteless. When I was younger (1970s) Winchell's donuts made the greatest tasting donut anywhere! Apparently not anymore. I know it's just a donut, but the donuts I had today tasted so poorly made. It's like they stopped caring about making a quality donut. The donuts had a cheap taste to them. Full of mostly just air. No substance. What happened? I'll answer that. They've stopped focusing on making just donuts. Winchell's has expanded their product line to include Deli sandwiches, bagels, breakfast sandwiches, specialty drinks etc. This is part of the problem. Winchell's is trying to do too many things when they should be concentrating on getting back to making a quality donut again like they once did before they expanded their product line. Glendora, CA has a donut shop called "The Donut Man" on Foothill Blvd. Any day of the week, all day long, a constant line of people waiting to buy their donuts (and donuts and coffee is all they offer). People are willing to stand in the long line at The Donut Man for a reason... their donuts are excellent. Quality donuts is why The Donut Man is so successful... they are extremely good at one thing: Making a QUALITY DONUT! The Donut Man is not trying to sell you a variety of things like deli sandwiches, bagels, breakfast sandwiches, specialty drinks etc. Winchell's needs to get back to basics and adopt the "In 'N' Out Burger" business model which is... don't have a lot of menu choices. Keep the menu simple. Only offer a few things but do those few things exceptionally well. In Winchell's case, concentrate on making donuts and ONLY donuts! I've never really had a good friendly service at this location. But, at least, I don't expect the poorest service like today. When I entered in the early evening today, there were no other customers inside. But, the worker/staff simply continued to ignore my presence standing and waiting for her. After waiting by the donut display assuming she was doing something urgent(?), I finally said "hello" to her at the cashier. She looked at me and returned to looking(writing?) at some paper. Not even the smallest gesture of courtesy like saying, "hello or I will be right with you." I continued to stand there for a while, then left. This place is awful! I wish I could give a -100. The doors where locked when I came. I sent an email the next day and spoke to the "manager" Jorge. The worst damn customer service I've ever encountered! AND HES THE MANAGER!! He basically called me a lair and then refuse to let me speak. Then asked well what do you want?! Uhhhh for you to understand your staff is shutting down at night when people are trying to make you money! I called the district office, that was a joke! No one ever got back to me! I've gone to the one on Lake@California and that place absolutely SUCKS compared to here... that place is loaded with dirty BUMS all the time... psycho hobos passed out on opiates and heroin. Donut Shop Hell. Don't make me post the pics to prove it. I has the evidence. So I walk into this slum and am greeted by very loud ranchera music. I don't like this. It's early morning. You have to start me off with James Taylor. But honestly, its annoying. The little guy working there is also rude and unhelpful. The counter for condiments is pathetic and dirty in a way that leads me to think it has been that way for days. The trash chute in the middle is nearly overflowing onto the counter. Filthy. The entire "kitchen" area is open so you can see for yourself. Its unclean. Floors had some mess spilled all over them in an area back there, nothing looks wiped down, disorganized, misplaced items all around, and just a dirty mess in general. But hey, people need donuts, I guess. God knows the two transient types making themselves at home at the rear of the shop looked like they could use a donut. One of these guys was sleeping and wearing an oxygen mask. No, these guys were not a problem. But when I had the nerve to spill my full cup of coffee all over the floor now that? That was a problem! I guess? Because now cleaning actually has to get done! I politely tell the little man behind the filthy customer counter i spilled my coffee. He shoots it, me, and it again a dirty look and drops out of sight. Comes back and irritatingly starts mopping. I have apologized, twice. Offered to clean it up, too. It's nearly 4am. It takes thirty seconds with a mop to clean up. The little man never even says anything to me. Just two dirty looks and done. This is how its done, idiot. "Oh, I am sorry, sir. Don't worry I will clean that up for you." 'I am so sorry. I see your busy. I can get it if...' "No sir. Let me get you another cup of coffee. I'll clean that right up afterward." 'Thank you so much.' Courtesy. Yes, even at 3:30am at a Winchell's. And while you have that mop, clean the floor. It's filthy. Oh, and lower that god awful music. When it comes to ranchera I much prefer the sauce. This shop is a stain on the entire franchise. Dated, dirty, and in desperate need of some care all around. Sorry, Winchell's hold a special place in my heart. As with most foods, growing up, donuts were also a luxury poor folks like me couldn't have. When we did have donuts, Winchell's were the ones we would grub on. They weren't from this particular location, but I just reviewed Carmines, and they're like next door, so I just said fuck it. Winchell's apple fritters/cinnamon buns taste awesome drunk and/or sober. If you're going to dine at Carmines, have dessert over here. Spoiled Donut Alert. The other night I bought a stale donut from this store. When I brought the hard stale donut to the attention of the clerk he immediately told me that he would not give me an exchange or a refund. Then things got very emo on his part. The clerk said, "Look, you eat it. So I no give you free". I showed him that I only tore off a pinch and the clerk argued with me aggressively saying, "Is no right. You make eat, half". I got another donut from the clerk eventally but he couldn't let go of how much he hated doing the exchange for me. The clerk yelled, "Go, You make trash on no body" as I was leaving. The whole situation was obnoxious. I didn't yell at this guy and only stated the facts of my problem calmly. What irked me the most about this clerk was that he felt compelled to get aggressive towards me in order to intimate me into leaving the store. That alone is Yelp worthy. Avoid this place. read more

I stopped by this Winchell's on the way home from an early morning shift at GAP one day, and left feeling awkward and unsatisfied. I was really thirsty and hungry at the same time, and was stuck waiting for that traffic light by the 110. I look to my left, and there's that little food and shopping center I've always wanted to visit. There was Starbucks, but I had a latte from the location on Colorado a few hours ago. So I decide to try Winchell's and maybe get a donut. Since I already had coffee, I needed something fruity. Perhaps a smoothie and scratch the donut, because I was going to eat lunch soon anyway. "Do you guys have any fruit drinks?" -Huh? "Like a fruit smoothie or something?" -Yes we have that ::points to the window::. "Oh... um... ::I couldn't really see the picture because it was meant to be seen from the outside:: what flavors do you have?" -Strawberry. "Ok, I'll have the strawberry one." It tasted like maybe half a strawberry ran through some blended ice and sweetened whipped cream poured into a cup. Ok whatever... I'm thirsty, it's kinda sweet, I'll drink it. So I'm sitting down at a booth just reading my newsletter from GAP when a man (maybe in his late 40s or early 50s) comes and sits down on the other side of the table. There were 3 or 4 available booths right behind me. So I'm like okay... maybe this is his usual booth, I'll just read some more and casually make like a ninja in about 30 seconds. Oh crap, shoulda made it 3 seconds. "Ya readin' about stickers huh??" (I happened to be on the page where they were showing us the sticker labels for pants) -Yeah... Ok, so then I waited 30 seconds and made a stealthy exit while he started talking to somebody else about shorts or some beachy thing like that. I always have a good experience when I come to this location. They are always so friendly and accommodating! The pastrami bagels are really tasty and inexpensive. The cashiers always acknowledge me even when they are experiencing a rush. If you aren't sure what to order, I recommend getting an apple turnover and a coffee. The staff always does their best to keep the store clean. This store is open 24/7 which is a huge plus if you have midnight cravings. read more

Poor customer service. Unfriendly, unprofessional, ignorance, not helpful at all. got me waited for at least 15 min to get 6 wheat bagels. I eventually had to repeat myself at least 2 times for each item. I was expecting it would take no more than 5 mins while i was the only 1 standing at the counter. I was totally late for my meeting. took her 5 min to figure the grain bagels were out. took her 5 min to get me 6 bagels in the box. Her co worker got at least 3-4 customers serviced and i was trying to get someone to help me because i was running late. " i want 2 coffee". The co worker looked at me and turned around and served the next guy. The girl came back with the bagels and i repeated i want 2 coffee. She went there and got me 1 and i repeated that i ordered "2" coffee. I told the co worker if i could get a tray since that girl who helped me was making me late for my meeting. THERE SHE IGNORED ME AGAIN. She helped the other customer. My girl came back I gave her a credit card. She didnt know how to use the machine and she got so frustrated. "you know what? I am paying cash. i have been standing here for 10 mins!" She gave me an impatience but also "phew" gesture. The IGNORANCE hispanic woman went next to her and they started speaking spanish back and forth softly then i THINK heard she said in ENGLISH, "slow down slow down." Slow down??? I dont see customer service here, i dont see co workers are helping each other... I dont see I am coming back here anymore and I will not go to any Winchell's anymore! I can get faster service at Starbucks and their bagels that are not from the freezer! FINALLY, there was my change in cash and she stood there looking at me and the IGNORANCE woman went back to her next customer. "am i getting a tray? yes or no?" Let me preface by saying that after 10 pm, there really isn't anywhere to go to in South Pasadena for a late night snack. So out of desperation, we decided to pop into Winchell's...around midnight. I have to say that my experience was so bad that I will NEVER again go to Winchell's. When we walked in, we noticed a few people studying, whilst thinking to myself: How in the H*** do they study here when the baker has his Spanish music turned on to full blast?? Loud enough it could be heard from the parking lot. Anyhow, we waited for about 2 minutes before he even came out from the back, at which point he came out saying "yes?" When asked to describe what the puffies were, he continued to cop an attitude by saying "puffies, yes, it's on the board, see?". Yes, duh, it's on the board. I know how to read! I'm asking what the eff it it! Good gosh, I'm sorry you're here buddy, but if you don't like your job, give it to someone who will actually appreciate having a job! So, in addition to the bad attitude, the donuts were dry. I though after midnight they would be relatively fresh, but they were NOT, and at around 1230am, he threw out the old donuts. WTF!! For nostalgic's sake, I had to have Winchell's. In Cold Stone language, it's termed, "GOTTA HAVE IT!!!" I hadn't had it in years and it's something I don't look for because they're not around as much anymore and they don't advertise much either. Here are a few samples of what they carry and some seemed too big to count as 1, but it counted anyway! -Cinnamon roll -2 stacked flat donuts with cinnamon and texture similar, but not as flaky as a croissant -Raspberry filling -Maple Iced -Some covered with chopped nuts -Cherry iced -Glazed -Chocolate -Puffy Beard Papa-like Crullers -Twisty glazed -Glazed and chocolate rolls -Sprinkles The guy was patient and cool as I kept pointing and asking what each donut was. None of the trays were labeled, but were arranged large and wide in front of me like a Mexican pastry shop. If you must ask, yes, I felt like a kid in a... donut store. I must've eaten 5 on the way to, and upon arriving at home. Here are the reasons I like: -Donuts be twice as large as Krispy Kreme yo! -Open 24 Hours!!! -14 to a box for $7.50! Take THAT baker's dozen! -Not overly saturated with sweetness. I just wish I could have tasted these when they were fresh and hot. With basic flavors, it's a solid pick for a donut craving. Come on, it's 24 hours! This one's in a strip mall on the East side of Fair Oaks Blvd, without the soft yellow lit triangular sign that usually beckons me from afar like a lighthouse. I've noticed a few of the familiar Winchell's signs in L.A. only to find out upon driving closer, that they belong to a different donut company. great selection... not sure how the quality is of the food but there is a lot to choose from. We got two wheat bagels with creme cheese, we each had a half from each bagel, for some reason, they tasted totally different. That's a bad thing right? The location has some very friendly staff there but it doesn't seem extremely clean. I don't know if it's the very dark counter tops or the layer of filth that seemed to be on top of them. Finally, and this is just a problem I have with all doors in restaurants but because I walked into the door not once, but twice at this location, I'll use Winchell's S. Pasadena as my soap box- I think we should put into law- if the door is a pull door, put one of those pull handles at the door, if the door is a push door, put a push bar at the door. I walked right into the door that is a pull because it had a push bar on it. Always such a treat to to pop in for a donut here. The donuts are always fresh and they have a good variety. One thing I find about Winchell's is that the donuts tend to stay fresher for longer (compared to say, Dunkin'). So you can grab a dozen and you know they will last....if you can keep yourself from eating them all. The service here is also very consistent and friendly in the mornings. I see the same people when I come in and they are always working hard. read more

This is a nice little donut shop, many of the employees have been working here for many years and know many of their regular customers by name. I'm a big fan of their deli sandwiches they're fresh and made to order. To me their coffee is up to par with Starbucks, and compared to Starbucks, what I can spend there for an overrated small cup of coffee, for the same price I can go to Winchell's and get a larger cup of coffee plus a donut or bagel with cream cheese. read more

Just to be sure I wasn't being unfair, I read through the other reviews and sure enough, other people have had the same terrible experiences at this Winchell's that I have. I got tired of paying almost $5 for a latte at Starbucks, so I started coming to this Winchell's to get my morning cup. The coffee was hot and fresh. I never tried a donut but they looked good, so I thought I had found my new "go to" place before work. At first everything was fine but then something started happening and soon it became apparent that what I had tried to explain away was actually happening. This is a racist donut shop! The first time I was ignored and passed over for service so that the spanish speaker who came in after me was served, I just chalked it up to bad luck. The second time this happened (the following week), I started to get a bit concerned and began to pay more attention. Finally, after having the same thing happen to me a third time within 2 weeks, and seeing it happen to others, it was impossible to ignore the blatant racism taking place at this donut shop. Ahh Winchell's an I go way back... But as a kid I dont remember seeing any Winchell's employee pulling stuff outta the freezer! I ordered a sausage egg and cheese on a plain bagel. I was shocked when I turrned around to c the dude pulling my sausage out of the freezer! He nuked the guts of my sandwich and toasted the bagel. I wasn't bad. I am bit surprised to see poor reviews of this place on yelp. To each, their own. I have visited this establishment on multiple occasions and have great customer service experience in addition to excellent sandwiches. The service is bit slow but then a lot of effort is put into each sandwich in order to make it delicious. I have had sandwiches such as chipotle, bacon,turkey and chicken steak and I found them very delicious. I would certainly rate these sandwiches above subway.
