I cannot recommend Dr. Julian at Windcrest Animal Hospital enough, especially for ferret care. Dr. Julian was my ferret Lucy's veterinarian for six wonderful years, and throughout that entire time he was consistently knowledgeable, compassionate, patient, and truly dedicated to her health and well-being. [[HIGHLIGHT]]He always took the time to explain everything in detail, answer questions thoroughly, and ensure Lucy received the very best care possible.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I never once doubted that she was in the most capable and caring hands. After we moved to Florida, we were no longer able to continue seeing Dr. Julian, and sadly, we ultimately had to say goodbye to Lucy due to lymphoma. My local animal hospital refused my sick cat, but Windcrest was happy to assist. We were told how many people were ahead of us and how long the wait could be. There is a parking area outside the emergency entrance and someone comes out to check in the patient. We got lucky and someone else left so our wait to get in was an hour. We ended up being there another 3 hours because of other more serious emergencies which I completely understand. The important thing is the wonderful care we received and the fact that my cat recovered. Windcrest is worth the drive and worth the wait. read more

I love this place. I made the 8-day drive from California with my five-month-old puppy (!) to visit my 96-year-old mother in Delaware for a month. Within days he'd swallowed a stick that cut his throat. Luckily, Ma had taken her dogs to this vet and they were able to see me on an emergency basis. Every staff member and Dr. Namey couldn't have been more helpful and professional. I give Windcrest 5 stars for being one of the only places that offers medical boarding for pets that need it. My dog is a diabetic and needs 2 shots a day, plus 2 heart pills. It is pretty much impossible to find a regular kennel that will board a dog needing shots. I see some other reviews here of people whining about this and that. But I say, try having a 12-year-old diabetic dog and wanting to go on vacation! Windcrest has medical boarding, with medical staff present 24/7, and all at a reasonable price. I will also add, years ago I had a pet dove that broke his wing flying into a window, after another pet chased him. Windcrest not only fixed his wing but he could FLY afterwards... and he went on to father 7 children! read more

Windcrest has seen 6 of my pets over the last 4 years. I brought my pet rats there for checkups, they helped me treat them when they got sick. They were always really sweet to my rats, gave them many pets and searches. When one of my babies' pneumonia got out of hand we had no choice but to put him down. That was when Covid just started so we couldn't come in. We handed the rat to their emergency room vet and came back to pick up his ashes after some time. The staff was very sweet and compassionate. They sent us a card signed by staff afterwards too. We recently got another rat put down and we were able to come in this time. Once again the staff was super nice and gentle with our ratto. They took him into a different room to give him an injection. I see that there's another comment below where they didn't do that for another rat. I'm not sure why. When they brought him back he was sleepy and I cuddled him until he fell asleep peacefully. Once again they sent us a card in the mail later. Now we have a puppy that we take to Windcrest. I have no complaints there. My only issue is that I can't get her groomed there unless she gets a flu shot, but that's not a big deal since we have a groomer closer to where we live. We moved across the bridge from Windcrest but I honestly don't feel like switching to another vet because I like them so much. read more

My pet rat was a patient here for some time. She developed cancer and I brought her in to be euthanized. It was an extremely traumatic experience. I could hear the vet tech in the back respond to another employee that she would do something as soon as she "puts this rat down." She then came in and proceeded to put the entire length of a long needle through the back of my rat, essentially stabbing her completely through. My rat screamed and stood looking dazed for a few minutes. The tech then said it didn't work and she took her to the back to finish the euthanasia. My sweet rat died in pain and alone without any compassion. It has tainted my memories of her completely. This was a few years ago and I still can't get over the experience. I feel like I failed her. The tech had no compassion and no clearly no experience injecting small animals. The vet who had been treating her never even came in. read more

I did not know about Windcrest Animal Hospital, as I am originally from PA, and a resident of Delaware for only 16 years. But when they were able to see my little dog, who was rapidly dying, on extremely short notice, I was so grateful that he was in competent hands for his last hours. They were able to run a few tests to give me some answers and closure. They did everything they could for him. I even received a sympathy card later on, which has never happened to me before. Probably the best way to give this review is to just tell my story. Several days ago, and very late in the evening, our cat experienced what appeared to be a seizure, lost the use of her rear legs, and her breathing became shallow. I googled and learned that basically the only game in town was Windcrest, so I called and they said come in immediately. I ran just about every red light between Bellefonte and Lancaster Pike, and arrived at 1:30 AM. Windcrest immediately did blood work and x rays and determined my cat had internal bleeding from a tumor on her spleen. I was told that even with surgery the probability of her surviving anesthesia and surgery was at best 40%. We decided to go for it, and Dr. Kern at Windcrest had a blood donor cat on the way for a transfusion at 3:00 AM. Dr. Kern was empathetic and didn't minimize the dire nature of this situation. She could not have handled this better. It was also her immediate and decisive action that kept my cat alive and strong enough for surgery. She moved with a sense of urgency that you rarely see except when a life is in danger, and her quick diagnosis and immediate action in fact did save a life. The surgery took place the next morning, and my cat survived the surgery. Best of all and at least for now, the tumor appears to have not spread, and after a recovery period she should be back to normal. She was already eating the same day after the operation. Dr. Snijders performed the surgery, and the result speaks for itself. Prior to the surgery, he told us how long it should take, what to expect, and that he would speak with us as soon as it was concluded. He followed through with all of that, kept us in the loop, and fulfilled every commitment. Prior to surgery he didn't minimize the danger and didn't give us false hope. At the same time he had a high degree of confidence, and left us feeling my cat was in good hands. In the case of both Dr. Kern and Dr. Snijders, their empathetic bedside manner is exceeded only by their skill as Doctors and surgeons. There is one thing that is certain. If not for this hospital my cat would be dead. And when you cut to the chase that's the only thing that matters. This is a state of the art facility that runs 24/7 staffed by people that are passionate about saving your pet. At that precise time of day, and given the situation I faced, without these folks I would have lost my cat before her time. My cat was released forty-eight hours after her surgery. Dr. Rodriguez handled the discharge, and he did that with the same amount of care and professionalism that seems to be the standard in this hospital. My cat is now home and recovering. She gets better every day and she is a different cat and well along the road to a full recovery. Almost every day I've called Windcrest with concerns and questions, and each and every time my calls are answered knowledgeably and professionally. They are there 24/7 for us and I am profoundly grateful. There's another group of folks here that are heroes in my book. Those would be the technicians that took such good care of my cat. I encountered so many of them that I can't remember all the names. They too were there for us every step and inch of the way, and I owe them a huge thank-you and an expression of a job well done. This place is amazing. My boy stayed overnight recently and he came out so happy. The staff at the front desk are very knowledgeable and helpful. My boy has only had 2 groomers (he is 7) and he is the American Bully breed. For some reason, he didnt allow the 1st one to bath him after going to them for 4 years, then we switched to another groomer with the same results after 3 years. Not sure if they hurt him or what, but he wasnt allowing them to bath him either. So I said, let me see if he will let Windcrest bath him prior to pick up. Don't you know, he came out of the smiling and so happy. My heart was so happy. Becky was so very awesome with him. I so wish they could take tips as I was ready to tip. Of course I am dissatisfied. The staff pressured me in to getting a test for my animal, saying he needed it and basically it's what a good pet owner would do. I spent over $200 dollars on my pet that day, I was told I would received results within 48-72 hours, by multiple people. Who later, I found out didn't even know what they were talking about. This was on the 12th... Even when he passed away on the 16th I still did not have test results and still no one called me or checked up on my bunny. Despite me calling 2 days after for test results and stating that he wasn't doing well. I would give 0 stars if I could. We took our puppy in late on a Thursday evening. He was really sick, not eating or drinking, running a fever, lethargic, etc. They took us back after a 45 minute wait (understandable), but then we sat in a room for an hour before being checked on, then waited another hour and a half for them to even do bloodwork and vitals. The rooms were freezing cold to the point that a vet tech had to bring us a space heater. It wasn't just us, either- the multiple rooms around us were dealing with the same things and not very happy. We spent over four hours here and the staff treated us as if we were burdening them with our visit and didn't seem to care about our dog very much at all. Disappointing and I'm glad he wasn't in a life or death situation because he definitely wouldn't have made it. read more

Horrible experience. I had taken my lab there a few weeks ago for a visit. Waited and waited and waited in examination room. He had a degenerative disease. I took him there today to say goodbye. Both my dog and I were very anxious. There was noone else in waiting room. We still had to wait 10 minutes for them to "ready " his room...in other words throw a quilt on the floor. He did not want to go back to the room and we all finally coaxed him there. I told them I wanted it all done quickly as he and I were so anxious and I had said my goodbye. They left us in the room for 20 minutes and then came in to discuss the bill!!!!! I was so insulted. When my mother passed away the funeral home did not ask for our credit card!! Every other dog I have put down I was just billed for it! Then another 10 minutes until they finall came in and sedated him It was the worst experience I have ever had with an animal. I would never get near this place ever again.....they are clueless and only in it for the money read more

All they cared about was money and made me wait for so long just to not have a clue what was wrong with her. I would never recommend this place to anyone. Well we had a horrible experience this week that I must share. We go to Hockessin Animal Hospital regularly and see Dr. Anthony who we love. Our Shih Tzu was throwing up so we took him to the emergency on Tuesday afternoon and saw Dr. Hamill at Windcrest. No Xray, just anti nausea shot and told to come back if he throws up again. That night he threw up again and by 11pm we were back at Windcrest emergency with Dr. Kern. She did take xrays and said the small spot on it was not of concern. The next day he still threw up. So off to my favorite vet we went, Dr. Anthony at Hockessin. He quickly took Xrays again to find the spot was actually a metal object. He took blood tests to make sure his organs are fine. I wasted $700 with Windcrest and my dog was sicker. I will never go back to Windcrest and I'm looking for another emergency hospital if ever I need one. I don't recommend their services. read more

We were disappointed that we were not able to see the facilities where our dog was to be boarded. We were told that they were too short staffed to give a tour. They also do not provide any webcams to permit people to see their pets during the stay. They insisted that the dog get a influenza shot (in addition to verifying his other shots). The shot incurred Office exams Vet fee and vaccine fee. The booster (two weeks later) required a tech fee and a vaccine fee. We were also told that the dog would require a fecal test to be boarded. The dog stayed there three time but the test was never accomplished nor were we charged. His most recent visit was a day only visit. We were in Northern NJ when we got a call saying the dog had been biting his tail and required bandaging. A fee was quoted and I agreed as I was too far away to easily collect the dog. When I collected him at 7:00pm, I was told that it was caused by "happy tail" where the dog was wagging and must have injured himself on the fence. The fee charged was also higher than was quoted on the phone. They wanted to schedule a follow up visit but I said I would take him to his regular vet. It seems to me that this facility is more interested in generating revenue than actually caring for the pet! We will not use Windcrest again. read more

I wish that I could tell you -- at least after what I'm about to write -- of a really amazing place to take your pet for great care, but at this point I'm too scared to name anywhere at all. If you have any ideas, please let me know, as my experience with Windcrest has traumatized me for a bit and I don't know what vet to trust. After adopting a beautiful black puppy lab my two roommates and I affectionately named Kingsley Cash BKL, we noticed that his health wasn't exactly up to standard bouncy-happy puppyness days after arriving into our home. We brought him to a vet that told us to watch his eating habits, and prescribed us some antibiotics and Pedialyte to give him. He seemingly worsened over the next few days. On the Fourth of July, we noticed that his lethargy was too much to overlook and we rushed him to Windcrest. It was there, shaking, crying, gasping, and just zombie-ing out, that I said goodbye to our beautiful baby. Windcrest had told us he had Parvo. It was impossible the test could be a false positive, and there was absolutely nothing for them to do. As I held my baby that I barely had time to show off to the world, they prepared an animal Euthanasia kit. By some miracle that I will remember for the entirety of my life, the foster family who had saved him called and said no, wait, bring him to them and their vet in north Jersey would do another test and provide him with fluids. Just as Kingsley was about to have his life extinguished, my roommate rushed in from that phone call to provide him a second chance. He has been with us now in our home, happy, eating, learning commands and doggy-smiling for a week. Kingsley brings light into our hearts when we return home from a bad day and provides us with a kind of love that only cuddly best friends can give you unconditionally. After dealing with so much guilt on our part that we put too much trust and blind faith into Windcrest and almost killed our baby, the point is is that we entered those doors trusting in medical professionals. We will never enter those doors again. You almost took our life away, Windcrest. With so many pets coming in and out of there you have to understand that they deserve a fighting chance just as I would. At least the vet tech was nice. read more

When recently moving from OR to DE, my list of "things that I was worried about replacing" was: 1. New hairdresser (for me) 2. New doctor (for me) 3. New vet (for my pups) The other day, I suddenly found myself needing last minute boarding for my two dogs. I was a bit panic-y, having never boarded in DE before (and being admittedly over-protective of my puppies). I found Windcrest online. I'm so glad I did! The facility is very nice, and the staff are friendly and helpful. Since it's a vet office, my dogs got full physicals while they were there. The vet report was the most detailed and comprehensive I've ever received from a vet. In addition, they got groomed the morning I picked them up, so they were fluffy and clean when I brought them home. On top of that, boarding was 1/2 the price of boarding in Portland. I'm no longer worried about the care of my puppies. I will use Windcrest for all my vet and boarding needs from now on. read more

I have been taking my cats to Windcrest for years. Recently, one of my cats got really sick, stayed in their ICU for 2 days, was released to me, took a turn for the worse that night and was euthanized the next day. He had cancer. Never during his stay in ICU was cancer ever mentioned! Never! While it is so hard to lose a pet, the situation was made worse by the complete lack of communication by the hospital. After paying over $4000 in vet bills, I was left with absolutely no answers. That is, until a necropsy was performed. After this heartbreaking experience, I will not be returning and hope nothing like this happens to others. read more

After moving to DE from CA, I was really nervous about finding a vet to take over the care of my older, health issue ridden cat. I had one extremely mediocre experience in NJ before coming to Windcrest and was worried that no one would seem as attentive as my former vet in CA. After a few recommendations by colleagues and acquaintances, I decided Windcrest was my choice. We saw Dr. Wilkerson, who even after receiving over 100+ pages of records from my former vet, seemed very patient and understanding. He never rushed us and took great care in explaining the plan of care both in person at our visit and by phone when discussing the results of my cat's lab work. After spending thousands of dollars on my cat over the last few years, I've come to expect to close my eyes, grit my teeth and hand over the credit card, however, I really have to say, with all the work done at our first visit, I thought the bill was rather reasonable. hooray! This hospital has complete care and a great staff but this all comes at a price. A bloodwork and X-Ray for my sick cat cost around $350 not to mention the surgery that would have cost between $2,300 and $2,900. There is no price that I would not pay for the health of my pet however at this price I would not be able to feed my pet much else the rest of my family! For his surgery we went to another doctor in lower DE that had more reasonable prices and my kitty is good as new! A very solid vet if you are willing to pay the premium. read more

Dr Wilkerson is great with the exotics and I was satisfied with his surgery on my car, however another doctor pushed 5 vaccines on my dog when I only came in for one. At that visit, the tech implied I was a neglectful pet owner for not having my dog Lyme and Lepto vaccinated. 5 vaccines (Lyme, lepto, bordetella, distemper/parvo which she wasn't even due for, and influenza which was what I came for) I was lucky my pup didn't have an adverse reaction.
