This was my first time visiting Wirtshaus while hanging out with some friends in LA, and I left really impressed. I ordered the Cordon Bleu Schnitzel with Brussels sprouts and spätzle on the side. The schnitzel was easily the highlight of the meal. I don't come across Cordon Bleu very often, so I was excited to try it, and it absolutely delivered. The Brussels sprouts were a great pairing, and while the spätzle was pretty simple with a light buttery flavor, it complemented the richness of the schnitzel well without overpowering it. The service was great throughout the night. Our food took a little longer than expected to come out, but it was a busy Friday night and our server kept us updated the entire time, which I really appreciated. My friend was also celebrating his birthday month and was given a free Beer Boot, which was a really fun touch. The atmosphere was lively and perfect for hanging out with friends. We were there while the NBA Finals were on, which made the restaurant feel even more energetic. One thing I also appreciated was how easy parking was, there was plenty of street parking both in front of the restaurant and across the street. Overall, Wirtshaus has a unique menu that you don't see very often, and I'll definitely be back to try more of it. read more

Now: been back for the US-Ecuador game with friends yesterday - and was deeply disappointed by service, ambiance - we were in a back room with no air - and sadly the food also. There was nothing really authentic about their curry wurst. Despite the sauce was really good, I would never order again. I was cramped between others and as the designated driver, I asked for some ice water. The server, still expecting as all others, a tip of 18% plus, would not want to serve, he asked me to help myself on a water station. That would mean that all others would need to get up twice - for me to get a water. I understand that particularly during the World Cup, they do not need my/ our business. Mediocre: parking (basically only limited metered on the street) and service (can be painfully slow after ordering although usually friendly when you can wave someone down) Exceptional: cozy/hardy atmosphere and mouth wateringly great food. Been here several times and each time I'm blow away how juicy, crispy, flavorful, or fresh everything tastes. I've never been even remotely disappointed by anything I've ever ordered. It is absolutely on par with the food I ate in Germany so whenever I want a throw back, I come here! I bring everyone here that's interested in quality German food. Price tag is a little hefty but for me, but as an occasional treat, it's well worth it. And the portion sizes are nothing to scoff at so I always feel I got my money's worth. read more

It may not be October but a fest was sure going down here at this German Beer Garden located in Hollywood. This lively spot features authentic German food and an extensive selection of European beers served in pints, steins, or boots. The atmosphere is welcoming, the dishes are hearty, and the beer is ice cold. It's a great place to enjoy schnitzel, sausages, & steins with friends or just chill on the patio with your fur baby. There are a few tables inside and a large outdoor patio. Our party of twelve were seated in a cozy little corner. I was impressed with the variety of Vegan dishes on the menu - including Schnitzel & sausages. I didn't catch everyone's order but our feast consisted of: Bavarian Pretzel, Jager Schnitzel, Pretzel Schnitzel, Caesar Gem Salad, Beet Burrata Salad, Exotic Sausage Platter, Goulash with homemade Spätzle, a side of seasoned fries, and Dark Chocolate Mousse Cake, Bread Pudding, & Black Forest Lava Cake for dessert. Of course, beers were ordered in addition to Glühwein and sparkling wine für mich. The Bavarian Pretzel was hot out of the oven and served with a side of sweet mustard & house made Obatzda (German Beer Cheese). The Caesar Salad was tasty, the Burrata was so soft & creamy, and the seasoned fries were addicting. Wirtshaus has the best schnitzel in LA hands down! I'm a first generation American from my German/Austrian side so I grew up with those foods and over the years it's become harder to find great German food in LA. The Wirtshaus chicken schnitzel and spätzle are just perfectly prepared and absolutely delicious and the portions are quite large. For dessert, highly recommend the Apple Strudel. We chose to sit inside, only barstool tables were available. If I return, definitely only sitting at a table. Both of us were uncomfortable and there was no place for my handbag except my lap. Service - started out good but after paying I didn't get my receipt printed as requested from the male server who took over. The food So many variations of Schnitzel- traditional, with an Asian, California or Mexican spin, for example. I went with pork and for my two sides choose Garlic Brussels Sprouts and Cucumber Dill Salad. My friend loved the schnitzel as do most reviewers. It was light and crispy but I was not a big fan of the tangy taste. The serving is huge at least. The cucumber salad was good after I added salt. Loved the super garlicky roasted sprouts. Would definitely get that again. Beer and wine prices are good. My friend's half liter beer was $9.50! I think there's a tradition that on your birthday, your beer comes in a huge boot-shaped mug. My friend has been here many times and recommends the pretzel with two dipping sauces. Would consider coming here again if I'm in the area and wanted a drink. Good German food has been almost impossible to find in LA. This sounded good and the photos of other reviewers were much appreciated. So we drove 40 minutes to get here for lunch on Friday. They are open for lunch only Fri.-Sunday. The rest of the week is dinner only. Street parking with meters or by app. Not very big place inside with a few small tables and some communal tables with benches like picnic tables. Quite a few smaller tables outside. FYI in Germany when seating is tight it's quite acceptable to seat strangers on your table. I don't know what the protocol is here. Service is great especially the guy from Stuttgart who speaks American English without an accent. The food did not disappoint. I have not had such good German food in probably 20 years. The chicken schnitzels were crisp, tender, and generous portions. My wife had the jagerschnitzel with a great mushroom sauce. I had the Wirtshaus Schnitzel with garlic cream sauce and a fried egg. We also had sides of Spaetzle, green beans, German potato salad, and red cabbage. We were stuffed but gave in to sharing an Apfel Strudel with a scoop of ice cream. Wonderful. Wirtshaus is my favorite German Biergarten in LA! There's plenty of seating indoor and outdoor and the food and beer selection is amazing. They also have other types of drinks for non beer drinkers. I've always gone there without a reservation but, it's always a good idea to make reservations for big parties, especially on the weekends when it gets very busy. The food here is amazing every time I've gone. They have a good selection and portion sizes are big. My go to dish is the Jager Schnitzel but the sausages are amazing too. I'd recommend getting a few items to share so you can try the pretzel as well. Also, it's good to come hungry because each of the dishes included two side dishes of your choice. My favorite side dishes are the mashed potatoes and the spatzle. They are not so delicious but can be a bit heavy. It's also a plus that they have a small parking lot underground. The food is delicious. The Bavarian pretzel came out so fresh and was perfect with the beer I ordered. The sauerkraut was some of the best I've had. The food all tasted great! Their beer selection is pretty expansive. The decor is fun and makes the place feel pretty cozy. It seems that the regulars there are pretty nice too. The servers were friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. My main issue is with the pricing. I understand LA is more expensive and why it's that way, but some menu items just don't make sense at the prices they're at. The parking can be an issue. The street is old and wasn't originally designed for this level of traffic and car dependency. However, if you're trying a lot of their beer (which is great), you really should be uber-ing there and back if you don't have a designated driver. read more

Environment and service were fantastic. The outdoor seating with lights and sports on was chefs kiss. Our waiters were also attentive and very knowledgeable - he pronounced everything so well! We got some beer (was very light and refreshing), some sausages (tried a beer bratwurst and the special alligator andouille), and the pretzel schnitzel. The sausages were a little too gamey for me, so those weren't my favorite. But we absolutely LOVED the schnitzel! It had cheese and bacon on top and was perfectly breaded. Wirstshaus has the best selection of German beer. They have a full bar so you can get whatever you want. We love going there for the food. I love their traditional Bratwurst and their salads. Their Caesar is my favorite. They also make great pretzels. All of their food is good and try the chicken soup. It is tasty. The place is just so cute and it is kept spotless. The bathrooms are always clean and stocked. The service is wonderful. The entire staff is great and they can guide you through the menu. They are fast but they don't rush you. It is just a comfortable place to be. Some nights that have live music which is such fun. I think they have a TV but I avoid it, but I know they show sports. Everything on the menu is great. We came here with a big group of family and friends to celebrate a birthday after a pottery class we took nearby. We all had a couple drinks during the pottery class but no one was beyond buzzed. The menu offers a free beer boot for birthdays if the party is greater than 10 people, which ours was. We ordered a birthday boot for the birthday girl but the waitress cut her off before she even ordered her first drink. Everyone else was able to order food and drinks and we stayed to for a while to finish the beers and food we had ordered. The waitress continually hovered around and even took away a beer that we had paid for when she saw the birthday girl taking a sip from her husband's cup. The waitress came by and told our party with an attitude "If I see her take another drink I'm going to kick all of you guys out." Like I mentioned previously, no one was being overly rowdy or loud. That was the final straw for us and we all got up and left after that. The service we received from this restaurant bar was absolutely unacceptable especially given that we were there to celebrate a birthday. What should have been an enjoyable night turned into a disappointing experience thanks to the rude waitress working here. To top it all off, we realized the waitress charged us for TWO boots-- one of which we never received since she cut us off and two kegs even though we had only ordered one. Avoid this place at all costs!! There are so many other bars with better service around. No need to spend your money at an establishment that does not care for their customers. read more

This is my go-to place when I want German food. The irony being that I don't always get typical German food when I go. My usual order is the Geflügel Wurst (chicken sausage with spicy mango and jalapeño), which is flavorful and nicely sweet; mashed potatoes, which are tasty and fluffy; and the fried potatoes with bacon, which are crispy and flavorful, though, admittedly, I do this mostly so I can mix the bacon and fried onions into the mashed potatoes. I also sometimes get the chicken schnitzel, which is also super good. I'd also like to mention that the mustard that comes with the sausage is strong. Like Grey Poupon Dijon mustard strong. They also have a huge selection of beers, fully annotated with the kind of notes you normally see for wine. Plus, as it says on the menu, "All our beers imported from Germany are brewed according to the 'German Beer Purity Law' from 1516." As for the place itself, they have a bar and big tables inside, as well as both big and small tables outside, in both a nice courtyard and on the sidewalk. The place is also clean, the music isn't too loud, and this might sound odd unless you've recent eaten somewhere with weak ones, but the napkins are hearty. Then there's the staff, who are very nice and friendly, as well as helpful when you're trying to figure out which of the dozens of beers you might like. As for parking, there's plenty on the street. The only bummer about this place is that they're only open for lunch on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. read more

Wirtshaus German Restaurant & Beer Garden is on La Brea and parking can be hard, but you will find something. The place itself is ever so cute with German decor and comfortable seating. It can get crowded. I am not sure if they take reservations. We go on off hours and never have a problem. If you like beer they have an amazing selection and there is fun to be had at the bar. Everyone is very nice. We go for the food. It is great. We love their Jager Schnitzel, which is classic Schnitzel topped with wild mushroom sauce. It is so great. You will think you are in Germany. We also love their Chicken Schnitzel which is breaded. The chicken is so good. They have wonderful sausages and yummy pretzels. When my son asked me what I wanted for Mother's Day, I said "German food!" My grandparents were German immigrants, and my Aunt Emma was, hands down, the best German cook I've ever known. I know what good German food should taste like, but rarely find it. I'd been to Wirtshaus before, and it is as good...or better...than I remembered. Between us, my family ordered bratwurst, spicy beef sausage, chicken sausage, jager schnitzel (pork), elk sausage, weiner schnitzel (chicken), cheese sausage, sauerkraut, red cabbage, fried potatoes, spatzle and cucumber salad. Hubby had a beer, and I had Gluhwein. OMG. SO GOOD! Portions are very large -- we brought at least 1/3 of it home. And the Gluhwein tastes EXACTLY like my family recipe that I make every Christmas. It's even served in a proper Gluhwein mug like the ones I've collected from German and Austrian Christmas markets. Dessert? Apple strudel, of course: crisp and buttery, with perfectly cooked fruit. I won't knock off stars for slow service, as it is clear they are severly understaffed. Came here to celebrate a birthday once I showed up with my friends the energy of the host/waiter was off. Didn't think much of it so continued to order two dishes and one shared plate the food wasn't bad but again the waiter was rude. Waited so long for the check and also the water was dirty with white stuff floating around in it. When the waiter came they pulled out the card reader and I put custom tip with a low tip since it was Bad service. And right after paying It didn't asked if I wanted a receipt but I wanted to leave right away. So my friends and I decide to walk to get ice cream and ten mins later I got a notification on my phone from my bank saying it was a greater amount than what I thought I paid. The reason for the added star is when ordering my vegan entree and sides our server asked me if I was vegan...I said yes and he made sure to notate that in the order. When ordering the greens beans he said he'd have them hold the butter and explained the fries are also cooked in cross contaminated oil. Wow...I really appreciated going above and beyond for the customer. People whether you're vegan or not you'll love this place. Definitely Schnitzel heaven (himmel). The fact that there are vegan V/V+ options beyond just potato, beans and sauerkraut on a German menu is a testament to the creativity of this particular chefs creations. If you go earlier in the day, the exotics (deer, snake, rabbit, etc.) are more available, but do tend to run out towards the end of the dinner peak. Rotkohl and sauerkraut are milder versions, so I'm guessing more of the Bavarian style. But given that I eat year-round instead of just in Oktober, I'm pretty happy that there's a decent Deutschkuchen near me without venturing half-way across the Southland just to get a decent full meal, versus just brats and kraut. Friendly service fits the bill and they're right on top of every order. read more

The spaetzle was chewy and filling, every sauce was mouthwateringly decadent, and the drinks were fantastic. I tried my first Radler and loved it. Recently went to wirtshaus for a trivia night and tried their sausages and beers. The set up is almost exactly the same as wurstkuche in dtla, order your sausages first and then beer hall inside. It's small so it got packed really quickly. They ran out of all the exotic and gourmet sausages when we got there (at 6!) so we only had the more regular sausages (polish, spicy Hungarian, etc). They were good but I had really set my eyes on the rattle snake and rabbit which they ran out of. They had a great selection of beers - lots of Belgian of course. For trivia night, we arrived early and were able to squeeze into a table but if you arrived closer to when the trivia started you might not have been able to get a table. read more

On the plus side, they had Kostritzer Schwarzbier (which is one of my favorite German beers) and lots of seating both inside and out....on the negative side, the bartender was kind of a beeeeee-atch. I don't know if she was just having a bad night, but seriously, don't take it out on your customers. Disappointing Experience at Wirthaus Despite High Hopes We called Wirthaus at 6:15 PM to ask if we needed a reservation for 7:30. A young woman answered and told us it might get busy, so she took our name to reserve a spot. When we arrived, however, no one could find our reservation in the book. We asked to sit inside since it was a bit chilly, and were led to a table that was essentially a narrow bench against the wall -- already occupied by two people. The only way we could sit was by squeezing in behind them, which was awkward and uninviting. We declined and opted to sit outside near one of the heaters. As soon as we sat down, the heater turned off. We asked the waitress what had happened and reminded her we had asked to sit inside. She questioned whether I was sure I had made a reservation -- as if I had imagined it -- and casually mentioned that she had turned the heater down. This made no sense, as it was clearly out. A few minutes later, another staff member came and replaced the propane tank -- it had simply run out. We ordered two schnitzel plates, drawn by the fact that it was "Schnitzel Month" and they were offering seven varieties. I ordered the veal Jägerschnitzel with German potato salad and garlic Brussels sprouts, along with a German beer. My wife chose the chicken schnitzel with red cabbage and French fries. When the food arrived, it looked nothing like traditional schnitzel -- more like thick, heavily breaded cutlets. My veal was full of fat and sinew, making it tough to chew. The German potato salad was served ice cold (it's supposed to be room temperature), and the Brussels sprouts were bitter -- the garlic had clearly been burnt. My wife's chicken schnitzel was slightly better, but still forgettable. We live in a neighborhood full of great restaurants, so finding a place that's below par is rare. I honestly don't know how Wirthaus has managed to stay open. With so many better options around, we won't be returning. read more

Oh my goodness, what a delicious couple meals I've had from Wirtshaus. I'm not well versed on German food but if this is what it all is, sign me up! All I know is Wirtshaus delivered last night for me. If you're into beer, their biergarten will surely have you covered with a ton of elections. They hooked me in by offering Cordon Bleu! Two nicely rolled, crisp pieces of chicken, ham and cheese baked to perfection. For $22 you'll get quite the filling meal as it does come with two sides. The fried potatoes are great but if you don't get the spätzle, you're ordering wrong. The Spätzle had the tastiest flavor, albeit grease for days. We also had the Chicken Schnitzel meal, nicely breaded and again came with two sides. The chicken schnitzel had two big pieces of meat and was just a fulfilling and satisfying meal.
