For those of you interested and enlightened enough to follow, like and/or befriend me and my reviews on Yelp, you may think I am a food snob. Well, smack me with a slab of fois gras, I am. However, good food doesn't have to be to be listed in some some foreign language on the menu requiring an iTranslate phone app to decipher what to order. The restaurant doesn't have to have a condescending Table Captain and 5 black aproned assistants all lifting six cloches in unison to present the main course.
No, good food can be passed through the pass through on a Loncheria. If it's good, it's good.
As pizza is the number Death Row requested meal I thought I would weigh in on this neighborhood spot.
The present conundrum is what rating to give it? Is it a three? No, not quite. Is it a four? No, not quite. And pizza, like chili and an acceptable blind date are all truly subjective.
Here, the dough is made in house. So far, so good. It comes in a thin, cracker crisp crusty version, a thick doughy style that wants to be in a deep dish, and Gluten free for those who shouldn't be eating pizza anyway.
The sauce that anoints most of the many pizza choices is also made in house and is a Momma Bear Sauce. Not too thin or thick, not to spicy but spicy enough, in other words just right as a platform for whatever you think of to lay on top of it. It has a tomatoey tang finish and pulls this pizza closer to a 4 star rating. Both dough choices are stand outs even if they don't have a wood fired rig. The crusts have just the right amount of char and bite back.
A great spot for right after the Little League game even if your kid dropped the easy fly ball and his team lost.
Set in the corner of small older strip mall Wise Guys which used to be Victoria's Pizza has all the charm of a Middle School Cafeteria. It's noisy and has the ambience of a train station, but so what? Wade through the caterwauling toddlers, protruding tummies, ancient in-laws, and sullen teenagers. just plain folks out for filling meal. Step up to the counter, make eye contact and order away.
Congrats, Says Thomas L. Friedman, you've been insourced by Wise Guys. You are cheap labor. Order at the counter and hold your stand and number high with pride. One of the high school kids may bring your Spicy Chorizo Meatballs the size of a baseball and surrounded by a cheesy Hatch Chili Sauce. Ideal with that icy beer with the cute name you've never heard of. Meanwhile an small army of teeners are busy hustling hot pizza in every direction from the open kitchen. All the pizzas are made to order and it takes a little time and you will stare at the servers like a pet shop puppy hopin' the blond one is totin' your pie. Speaking of, there is a huge variety of pizza combos and if you don't see it and can think of it and the kitchen has it...you get.
There are at least 20 or more craft beers on draft. Can't decide? Staff will give you a great recommendation even if they won't be able to legally drink for two more years.
Garlic Knots are just as advertised. Knots of pizza dough scraps tied in a knot and drenched in garlic and butter. Now what kind of fool wouldn't like that? They are an East Coast concept...Philly isn't just known for just slathering Cheez-Whiz on thin steak. And Wise Guys' knots are as good as these things can be.
The main event brought a The Don All Meat. Hey, in for a penny, in for a few extra pounds. Thick dough with Red Sauce and piled high with Pepperoni, Sausage. Canadian Bacon, Meatball, Bacon, Mozzarella and a gift certificate for a cholesterol panel.
The Chopped Sicilian Salad is everything reachable in the Walk-In...chopped. Artichoke Hearts, Kalamata Olives, Marinated Mushrooms, Beets, Dried Cranberries, Capers, Sun Dried Tomatoes and Red Onion on Shredded Romaine with a Basil Vinaigrette. Did I leave anything out? Did they? Nope!
Hate pizza? You need intervention. But there are also sandwiches, pastas, calzones. soups, salads, and should just want to graze, there are a bunch of appetizers to keep you company until you realize your blind date got cold feet and isn't coming.
My one small insignificant complaint is that they serve everything on dollhouse sized plates. Tiny saucers for your five year old's tea party. You would be better off to throw the huge slice of pizza on the table and cave man it.
So, is this place Mozza? No, of course not. But it is way cheaper and they don't nick you for valet service. Is it as good as Pizza y Vino which requires a valid passport because it so far from anywhere. No. But is it good pizza, in fact better than good in a World over done with over done horrid pizza? Yes.
