Finally made it out and they are about to close. :( It was very busy when we arrived and we had to wait about 20 minutes, but after being seated, everything was smooth. Trying several items on the menu provided us a nice sampling of what they have to offer. We enjoyed everything we ordered. My favorite was probably the Brussel sprouts as they were cooked to perfection and not sweet like most restaurants serve them. A close 2nd was the chicken parmesan served over zucchini noodles. The final item ordered was a mushroom pasta with shrimp. The shrimp were fantastic with a light char and perfect flavoring. The pasta was good. It was a bit to spicy for me with the chili oil so I only had a small portion. The inside is simple yet inviting with an open layout. They seemed a bit short staffed, but every one was hustling and honestly we were well taken care of. It's been a while since the last time I've visited for dinner and drinks. This time, we stopped by Saturday evening with no reservations. It did look quite busy on the patio when we checked in with the hostess. We were informed that it would prob be about 20 minutes or so for a table and if we wanted to wait at the bar. Exactly what we did. Bar area had maybe 5/6 hi top chairs that look onto the bar. Gabriel and Francisco who were working was knocking the drinks out one by one. Sitting there and just watching them create magic for everyone, it was quite amusing. Seeing how it's made and presented with precise detail, it was an art. While waiting for the table we started off with the raspberry lychee martini and the spicy margaritas. Both were great. The right amount of kick with each sip. Gabriel was knocking them out one by one and man was he busy. Fransisco took are of us while we were eating which we ended up just having our dinner at the bar instead. The last time I remembered the chicken Parmesan which was excellent. So we started off with the grilled prawns as a starters. Five prawns in a skewers and grilled with a delicious sauce accompanied. It was tasty and quite delicious. Decent size and meaty for each bite. Entrees was a little mishap as our meal was mistakenly given to the party next to us which they enjoyed. Honesty mistake but we laughed it off. Kitchen was informed and a rushed was put on our order. We weren't in a rush so it was fine with us. They apologized and graciously offered us a dessert after dinner. Something simple but very graceful for the honest mistake. Entrees, the wild mushrooms pasta which was quite tasty and pretty decent in size. The cream sauce which wasn't too over powering the meal was great. Each bite was very tasty. Then there was the chicken Parmesan which why we were here and expecting. The last visit it was excellent with grilled broccolini, slices of tomatoes on top and mozzarella cheese and onto spaghetti pasta. It was great. Thinking it would be the same this time which it wasn't. This visit, it was just served with squash pasta and buffalo mozzarella on top. Honestly it wasn't what I expected, somewhat of a little disappointed. Chicken was good don't get me wrong. But the hot meat with sauce and then you have literally COLD squash pasta paired with it. It was a little underwhelming. Overall, we still had a nice experience. The place was pretty full and of course the lakers were on so it was fun seeing everyone cheering them on. Bar seating for a meal was great as we had fun conversations with both Gabriel and Francisco. Plus they were cranking them drinks out one by one. Excellent in what they do. Wood & Salt Tavern: Big Prices, Tiny Portions, and a "Tavern" With Barely a Bar I really wanted to like Wood & Salt Tavern, but this ended up being one of the most disappointing meals we've had in a long time. We went as part of a larger group, and right at the start I asked the waiter if they could separate our bill since my family of five didn't want to try to sort everything out later. He said it was no problem, which seemed like a good start. Then it was time to order drinks, and I immediately wondered how this place calls itself a tavern. The whiskey selection was tiny and the beer list had maybe five random options. I asked for Irish whiskey hoping for something basic like Jameson or Redbreast, and they didn't have either. I ordered whatever Irish whiskey they did have, neat. What showed up looked like maybe half an ounce in a dirty glass. I drank it before realizing the glass wasn't clean, which definitely didn't help the experience. Next came the appetizers. We ordered calamari and the "jumbo" prawns. The calamari plate had about four small bites on it for roughly $30, and the "jumbo" prawns were about the size of medium shrimp, with four on the plate... also about $30. They tasted okay, but the portion sizes were honestly ridiculous for the price. For the mains I ordered the $35 steak dinner, and the steak looked like maybe five ounces of meat. My wife and the kids ordered pasta. The pasta dishes were fine, but the "wild mushroom" pasta tasted almost exactly the same as the red sauce pasta -- both loaded with so much fried garlic that everything tasted identical. Then came the bill. For three adults and two kids, the total was close to $300, which is hard to justify when the portions are that small and the food is average at best. They also added an automatic 20% gratuity. I completely understand putting auto gratuity on large groups -- that's pretty standard -- but 20% automatically feels a bit greedy, especially when the experience wasn't great to begin with. Tiny pours, tiny portions, average food, and big prices. For a place calling itself a tavern, the bar selection is surprisingly weak -- and the value just isn't there. The restaurant was busy with constant traffic, however I didn't feel rushed. We ordered calamari, house bread and mozzarella balls. Such a pretty and quiet spot on Atlantic in Long Beach. Crazy that for years I hung out in the restaurants here but had yet to stop by Wood & Salt. The restaurant name has changed a few times though throughout the years. We visited on a Saturday afternoon and there was only one other group in the restaurant. One server was available and she was great - very nice and made sure to check on us. The $5 mimosas - DEAL!! So yummy too. The menu was not huge, and was somewhat limited but the food was delicious (smaller portions). The mismatched plates, so cute! I was looking for a restaurant that had better vegetarian options. I can always find a good burger, pasta, Asian place to eat, however too many sauces too much salt. I just wanted fresh interestingly prepared vegetables. The reviews were good from vegetarians about this restaurant so I ended up going there last night. This is America. The portions were not very American. I could have ate two of the plates. The steak was cooked medium rare and was very good. 2 of the pieces were inedible due to the meats textures but the ratio is good. I ordered lemon aioli and another sauce but did not receive them. We ordered the portobello mushroom fries for the table as an appetizer. But we did not receive them until we had finished our meal. Fortunately, I still had room and was able to finish the fries. They lacked flavor. The sauce they use was only enough to flavor a few fries. They taste like pot pie crust. Interesting but probably won't order again. I love how this stretch of Atlantic has evolved to where it is today. The walkable area provides a lot of opportunities for every meal of the day. As a change of pace, the group went here on Thursday evening for dinner and cocktails. I must have passed this place a million times and never considered to stop in. I was reminded of it by seaching through Yelp. The restaurant opens at 5pm. We arrived about 5:30pm and there were a few people already eating. We were seated immediately outside on a perfect summer evening. It was a few minutes and we were able to get drinks and appetizers ordered while it was still happy hour. The drinks were alright. The happy hour drinks weren't mixed with cheap liquor. Old fashion and margaritas were well-liked by everyone. The appetizers came out a bit later and were pretty good. I liked the portobello fries but no body else did at the table. This is a very relaxed atmosphere. You can't be in a hurry if you plan to eat here. This place is where you go when there is a lot of table conversation. Have patience with the waitstaff. I ordered the chicken parmesean.
