I like Wood. I live near it, so I go a lot, but normally it's only for drinks. There drinks are always good and always strong. I like the atmosphere and I think it's a great place to start out your night. The staff is always nice and accommodating. I finally had a chance to check out their food at brunch, though. The menu was small but had some great options. I was feeling a sweet option, so I went for the waffle. When it was brought out to me, it was visibly burnt. I tried it anyways just check and it was definitely burnt. I don't like sending food back but $10 for 1 waffle, it better be good. They were very quick to get me a new one, and it ended up being good, but my friend definitely got the better choice. He got the lox benedict. It looked good and it tasted delicious. So in conclusion: waffle- no, benedict- yes. I still need to check it out during dinner to get the full view of the place, but I would recommend it to a friend. read more

I don't say this lightly, this meal was my favorite food in Chicago. We started with some seasonal cocktails, which were creative and amazing. The small plate steak tartar was delicious but not a stand out of the meal. The scallops on the other hand is one of the best dishes I've ever had. I was with a party of 4 and sampled everyone's dishes. I ordered the salmon which some how was my least favorite large plate. Least favorite of course needs to be read in context, because it was still amazing. I also tried the steak on special. Absolutely incredible. Better than any river north steak house that's just a barely seasoned piece of meat. My favorite dish of the whole dinner and why I can't wait to come back is the walleye. Luckily my sister never finishes her plate so I could help her out there. The fish, risotto, everything about that plate was amazing. I can't recommend this dish enough. Came in on Valentine's Day without a reservation, my partner and I were able to quickly get seated at the bar. We started with the home-spun Bloody Mary's which I was a huge fan of. Pretty boozy, pretty good. For brunch we I had the chilaquiles which were divine. Perfectly cooked over easy eggs, a fantastic fried salsa verde and fresh chips. My partner pretty much ate whatever he could in between my bites. He also ordered the eggs Benedict which had a wonderful hollandaise. After applying the proper algorithm (noting the love/hate pattern of past reviews), I have determined that this next review for Wood should be a positive one. The food and service also require a rave. I met the chef at another location and felt the restaurant would be good. I was anxious to go and it was as anticipated. We went on a Wednesday, early-ish. The waiter was attentive--suggesting a mixed drink to my companion and seeing it slowly consumed, asked if another would be preferred. We had the ham flatbread--crisp and the bits of salty ham offered a nice meld of flavors and contrasts. The chicken large plate was excellently prepared, but not to our tastes--the chicken was intended to contrast with the other ingredients--we would have preferred more seasoning. We had a small clams and linguine special. Fantastic! The sauce had a nice kick at the end, something I've not had with that type of dish. After struggling with a number of look-good/taste-poor suburban dessert offerings, we were hesitant to try dessert given our recent streak. But we had the brown butter cake with blueberry ice cream. Five stars there all the way. For those who have reasoned heavy criticism of the restaurant, you may have gone in when the relatively new restaurant was getting adjusted. Give it another chance. I suspect the return will be much more enjoyable. (Side note: to one reviewer in particular, the red squiggly lines when you type your review means misspellings. Great food, great atmosphere, delicious brunch, but a bit of a tight squeeze. Arrived for our reservation on time but still had to wait about 15 minutes to be seated. Not too big of a deal as it was super busy after Halloween. Just noting to people that may be on a tight time schedule may need to think twice just because how busy this place gets. Once seated we were able to order fairly quickly and food arrived in good timing, especially considering how busy it was. Food - Eggs Benedict: impressive, delicious, very large shareable portion. Fried Chicken: breading had the perfect balance of crunch with the delicate chicken. Yummy! We didn't get drinks, but the menu look delicious. I've been here a few times for dinner and drinks and it's one of the more upscale feeling places in an area where upscale isn't always attempted. The cocktails are fairly pricey but well done, one is enough for sipping. The fried chicken dinner was the specialty for memorial day so i fat splurged, surprisingly it was quite crisp and not dripping in grease like most fried food, it was great! Then around 15 mins to get our bottle of wine, which came out after the food. At 10 mins I asked about the wine and was told "it's in the works." The manager was also indifferent about our long ticket time - for a bottle of wine that could just be grabbed from the cooler... When we were finished with our food the server silently dropped off the dessert menu. He barely spoke the entire experience. We seemed like a major inconvenience for him, though if he were simply nice we certainly would've gotten another bottle and probably dessert. However, just went there again a few weeks ago and they actually got a new chef who does a much better job with the food IMO. Oh and by the way, I am one of the pickiest people when it comes to eating fantastic food and rating the dish/dishes. I like my food and don't mind paying an extra buck or 50 for the good stuff! We were looking for a new spot to get a good dinner without heading downtown. The host was super friendly upon arrival and really added to the ambiance. The decor is beautiful, very modern. We both decided to try something new and were happy with our choices. We started with the carrot agnolotti pasta which is one of the best things I've had in a long time. The flavors were insane, different and tasty. I got the soft shell crab and pork belly entree which was a special that night and it was pretty good. My friend got the sturgeon with beets and she loved it. Drinks are a little bit pricey when you are just going to a local spot during the week, would be curious if they had any specials moving forward, The next time we go I think we will try a bunch of the small plates vs the large so we can try more things on the menu. Well guys it finally happened. I finally found a place that warranted me making an actual review. The ambience, the service, and the food all super exceeded expectations. The menu is so full and intentional. Each plate that we tried was something that pushed our palates, and brought perfectly married combinations of ingredients. When I say married I mean like a blissful 57 year marriage. It was phenomenal. Highly recommend the duck liver toast, escargot toast, Turkish lamb flatbread, Slagel farm steak, and their passion fruit sorbet. I was blown away and cannot wait to try more of their menu. Tim was our server and did an excellent job of walking us through the menu and facilitating our entire experience. This is the best food I've had in Chicago and I am so grateful this spot is in my neighborhood! It's hard to find a place that's sophisticated without being intimidating. This place is phenomenal! I was in for dinner a few years ago and had a great meal. Last night I decided to order via Grubhub because, shelter in place. I was completely blown away by the quality, deliciousness and how the food traveled! I ordered the beets with goat cheese mouse and mushroom crumble, absolutely outstanding. The flavors were complex and light. I also got the red wine braised chicken leg with wild mushrooms, over handmade spaetzle. I took one bite and thought I had died and gone to heaven. I've always wanted to try this place and glad we finally did. Love love the atmosphere. Comfy booths and a gorgeous long bar. Service here was really good. Cocktails were deliciously prepared: we had the sazeracs, negroni, and Cosmo--all were really executed well! Food: started with: Sampler which had cheese curds(yum!), olives (yum) and deviled eggs (yuck!) not enough egg and too much vinegary mustardy gook. I had the steak frites which was perfectly cooked but just needed sauce to make it delicious. Frites were nicely prepared! Salmon was how shall I put it...boring! And kinda oh no a bit fishy??. I would have given Wood a higher rating but our dinner stated off on a bad note. After we checked in, we we informed that we had the table for only 90 minutes! I have never been told that by ANY restaurant in the world. We asked our server and he said it had to do with "Covid." No restaurant during has ever said this to me. The server encouraged us to share. There were three of us and we each ordered different item. Everything was good, but nothing was great. There are so many great restaurants in Chicago that are much more welcoming than Wood. I think it will be some time before I return. read more

I mean they could have offered us a table but they didnt and there were no people around that time... i just dont get the logic of not allowing us to sit and enjoy our drinks.... You know when you lay in bed after you've had dinner and relive the entire experience? You recall every bite, every sip, every smell? No? Well, then you haven't been to Wood yet! There were six of us and we went to town: Soft shell crab (I don't know because my friends inhaled it -- it looked good though); the pork belly was delish; the pasta with wild mushrooms (don't know, don't like fungus but again, inhaled amongst lots of moaning and groaning in pleasure). The risotto was excellent. NOW, the spaghetti with crab was the most amazing thing ever. We re-ordered it three times. And the look on my face brought the manager/owner over to see if I was dying. I was. OF PLEASURE. He sent another one over! Nice gesture. And finally, we had the ham flatbread and the veggie flatbread. The ham flatbread was the best I have ever tasted. For dessert, we had the chocolate thing and the ice cream shortcake. Both excellent. But I should have just asked for a vat of crab spaghetti and bathed in it. Drinks were strong, including this one with St. Germain and white cranberry. Had two. Was feeling a bit tipsy from them. The place is pricey and loud. And the plates are small. But everyone looked to be having a good time. Our server was very nice. No drama (and we were a big group all talking at the same time). We were all colors, all sexual orientations, and all ages. I didn't pick up any attitude. For all of us, the final bill was about 250 bucks without tip (including at least 2 drinks per person). Did I tell you about the crab spaghetti? Standouts: The scallops, excellently seared on the outside while kept soft inside with a cauliflower purée to match. I Had dinner here Saturday evening and was able To snag a table outside. Their interior decor however is fabulous and intimate. Great place for a date night or just over all night out. This has to be one of my fave restaurants in Chicago thus far. I was excited by the well done gin sour that was made for me. As simple as a gin sour is, a lot of other restaurants or cocktail lounges I have been to can't seem to get it right. It was the perfect amount of ingredients as well as nothing shy of gin. Total thumbs up already! I started with the whipped ricotta and focaccia bread. Wowzerz! So delish! Def a sharing portion. I ended with Pan-Seared Hanger Steak that was cooked absolute perfection. I love the side of fresh in house pastrami with the mix of Tuscan kale and potato purée. I savored every bit. What turned my meal totally up was the fact of knowing that the meat is butchered in house. My friend ordered the quail and raved how great it was! Service was attentive and great! Ahhh what an amazing place! My wife and I met up with a cousin here for brunch on a Sunday. My wife an di got there a little early, but they were able to seat us no problem and get us started on drinks. I had the poinsettia, which was delicious - sweet but still a little tarte. Our cousin had coffee, which she really enjoyed (having downed more than 3 cups of it while we were there!), while my wife had a mocktail made using mango juice/nectar (she appreciated that they mentioned it when she asked about non-alcoholic drinks since many places just say their soft drinks). We all split a Brioche Cinnamon Roll, which was divine! I was worried it be overly, grossly sweet. It wasn't. It was sweet, but the sweetness was subtle and not overwhelming. My wife had the Pork and grits, which she really liked. Her cousin got the Classic Breakfast which was - well, classic! And then I got an assortment of a la carte items - breakfast potatoes (yum), toast and jelly/jam (it was a new Concord grape and it was so, so good), and eggs, which were cooked perfectly. Our server (I wish I could remember his name because he was simply wonderful) was helpful, attentive, sweet, and fun to talk to. We definitely lingered a little (not obnoxiously long) to chat and catch up and sip our drinks and didn't feel pressured to immedietly leave. Food? On point. Service? The best. Interior? GORGEOUS. I decided to give this restaurant another try after a few years of not coming to it because I did not think it was anything special. Me and my dining partner had some wine to start out and the charcuterie board. Both were very good. I had the halibut and when I took my first bite of it, the fish was not warm but room temperature. I stopped eating it immediately because I was afraid it was undercooked. I then realized it was cooked but it must have not sat under a heat lamp when the waiter tended to other things aside from bringing us our food. The waiter came to check on us and I explained to him the situation of the fish being room temp. He said, "I'll tell the kitchen" and turned around and walked away. No offer to warm it up or bring a new one, just "I'll tell the kitchen." We paid the bill when we were done and the more I thought about it, the more I felt like a fool for paying 30 something dollars for a small portion of room temperature fish. I sent an email through the restaurants website and do you think I ever heard back? No. The owner or manager who reviews the emails on their website didn't think it was important to respond to a customer who had a waiter with an attitude and some mediocre fish. Never will I ever return there. How unfortunate. I really wanted to Like Wood. read more

This was quite frustrating because at that point, we couldn't change to another restaurant, as it was already prime time on Saturday night (and w/ COVID restrictions, there is even less availability). I met a few friends for brunch on a cold, windy Saturday. We arrived at 11am and were seated right away next to the large windows overlooking Halsted. The menu was simple, but had unique takes on the typical brunch finds. We opted out of a Bloody Marys and ordered coffees instead, but the table next to us ordered them and I definitely wished we had splurged! I ordered the biscuits and gravy because it was definitely a day for comfort food. The other orders were the Crab Cake Benedict and the Chiliquiles. We definitely took advantage of the bottomless coffee with a few coffee cups each but the waiter gracious continued to fill up our mugs. It was a moderate wait before our meals came out and they looked amazing. Simple yet beautifully plated. The biscuit was homemade and flaky and buttery, but the sausage gravy was perfectly seasoned as well as creamy and rich. It was topped with two eggs over easy. I ate every last despite being extremely full! My friends gave their meals great reviews as well, so definitely a reason to come back. I was surprised that the place was a bit empty but maybe the weather had something to do with it. One of my friends lives nearby, so, a group of us visited last weekend for a girls' night... Be warned...there are about 8 tables in this restaurant...and the other patrons DO NOT WANT TO LEAVE...there were 5 of us waiting for a table for over an hour. A family (could have been a 'meet the in-laws' day) was also waiting and when they got seated first, we thought we might never eat! In any case, we had a fine time having cocktails at the bar until we were seated. On to dinner...we were told this was a 'small plates' place. Now, I'm not one to argue on how large (or small) a small plate should be, but our server made it sound as if these plates were miniscule...which they were not. Unfortunately, we over ordered... The entire table shared a flatbread (the Alsatian one...yum!). This is where the table split...I wanted another flatbread (is that not a food group?), but my friends wanted all sorts of other things. We ended up with another flatbread, risotto, duck and a few other items. Everything was tasty, though really rich and portion sizes are much bigger than you'd expect! I was stuffed after a few bites of food, though that didn't stop us from finishing everything off. While the food was good, I felt the service, while friendly was a bit lacking. We were somewhat oversold on the food, plus, a service charge was added to our bill which I don't recall being listed on the menu....we would have tipped more if the paying portion of our experience was a bit less of a mess...the cards weren't run with the exact amounts we indicated... In terms of the atmosphere - this is bustling! There were a few larger groups, but otherwise, it was mostly smaller groups/couples. I am not sure I'd return unless I just wanted a drink as I'm not sure I'd be willing to wait for the food again. She lives in Andersonville - a $8 Lyft ride from this restaurant that she suggested for this past Saturday. We didn't NEED a reservation at 7pm, but it's always good to be on the safe side by making one. We were seated right away. They have a decent cocktail & wine menu. I ordered the "Death Becomes Her" cocktail which comes with a flower! An instagram-worthy drink, of course! For appetizers we got the flatbread (as did everyone around us) and the duck ribs which were delicious! I had a steak for my dinner, and my friend had fish....we had wine to accompany our dinner. For dessert we got a ricotta cake with almond ice cream. Everything was just fantastic!
