We've only had the brunch there so I can't comment on the dinner service. We had the croque madame and the tot-nachos. (Those were meh, nothing special and very little meat.) This place is a diamond in the rough. On the surface a passerby would think this is a basic meat & potatoes kind of place but it is so much more. Whoever is working in the kitchen is BRINGING IT. The first time I visited it was for lunch & I was blown away. I got the trout dip and since I do GF I just ask for more cucumber slices. This is not your average dip, it's fancy. They put smoked trout roe on top!! It's so good sometimes I just get that as my entree. I also got the seasonal salad & it was so beautiful I can't believe I didn't take a pic. There were multiple colored roasted beets, snap peas, leafy greens... it was a rainbow of color & delicious. I was just there for dinner twice in the past 2 weeks. Once I had the prime rib. The potatoes that come with the prime rib are to die for! The second time I tried the shrimp & grits, it was good, not my favorite but I have to say I really like the variety on the menu. Just to start, wife and I went in because this place is a CB institution. Been around for decades! Incredible ambiance and old mining town feel. Beautiful bar and back bar. It was not terribly busy because it's ski season and we weren't skiing. Just went in for a couple beers to relax. After a fantastic conversation with Alfredo, our bartender, we decided to try a couple of his signature cocktails. OH...MY...GAWD! It is worth the drive to Crested Butte for his imaginative drinks! We had the "When We Met" and the "Bittersweet Moment". Ah...MAZING! The only thing better was the story behind those cocktails. We arrived early for our reservation and they seated us right away. Our server was nice but kept pushing the pricey meat dishes on us. We weren't biting. We ordered some apps and snacks and a few entrees. The pork on the snack menu is full on fried. We weren't fans. Chicken wings were cooked well but the sauce was so hot it burned our tongues. The burgers were just ok. The bolognese was the best thing we got. Pretty cool spot though. Vibe was on we wouldn't go back for the price though. read more

I didn't have a reservation but the hostess was nice enough to seat us anyway. It took a VERY long time for our orders to be taken, I wasn't sure if we had a waiter. The coconut shrimp was overcooked and dry. Not great tasting, especially for $32. The entrees were finally brought out over an hour after we were seated. The bun on my burger was stale and my well done burger was pretty raw (see photo). I would have ordered a steak but no way with the slow service. The restaurant looked like it needed a good cleaning. It looked more like a dumpy bar than a high end restaurant. Save your money and avoid this restaurant. The town grocery store has better food in their hot bar. No kidding, the Mac & Cheese or egg rolls are delicious. read more

We are locals and miss the Nickel. The new menu is awful. Very, very limited. No chicken. Couldn't even get protein on a salad. The servers were nice and helpful I had the Nickel salad. Supposed to be a wedge salad. It was red leaf salad smothered in quinoa. It was gritty and just bad. My wife snd I split the NY strip, $60. The steak was tough and chewy. It was absolutely smothered in a mushroom sauce. Side was 7onion rings. So $60 for a tough, chewy steak and 7 onion rings. Miss more things than I can count. Won't be going back anytime soon. read more

My wife and me went to the Wooden Nickel for our 30th wedding anniversary, which they were informed twice before our visit. In a nutshell, there was no reference to our anniversary, drinks and food average, at best. Sadly, we will never go back to the Wooden Nickel. read more

What can I not say? We have visited the wooden nickle before and had a great experience so we decided to revisit for a second time. We ordered the fish dip appetizer and it was great. But didn't have anything to wash it down with while our drinks sat empty for the majority of our visit. I ordered the burger and my boyfriend ordered the New York Strip. The burger was just OKAY and the steak quite literally smelt terrible. I don't know how to describe it but the smell was bad enough for both of us to question weather he should eat it and ended up not eating much. Over all the service was terrible, and the food sucked. Definitely wasn't worth the $130 bill at the end. read more

We came in with a party of 6 around 7:30 on a Tuesday and got seated promptly, but it took almost an hour and a half from the time we were seated to the food arriving, with 55 minutes of that being from the time we put in our food order. It took over a half an hour just to get fountain sodas. The place wasn't anywhere near full either and didn't seem understaffed. When the food finally came out several of the dishes had clearly been sitting under the warming light for a very long time and was practically inedible. Our waitress was incredibly nice and I'm not sure how much the delay was due to the waitstaff versus the kitchen. However she never apologized or acknowledged any of the delays or checked in on us beyond ordering and delivering drinks/food, and a 20% gratuity plus additional 6% surcharge was added to the final bill. The prices were high even for a remote vacation destination, and with the low quality of food and long wait it was definitely not worth it. read more

The restaurant was recently sold to a new owner. The new menu is a fraction of what it used to be. No prime rib, really limited steak selection. It seems like they are trying to turn it into more of a sports bar menu. The servers were great, but I was really annoyed by the fact that they now charge a 6% "service fee". Please know this is NOT a tax. It is a mandatory tip that the restaurant hopes you won't notice. Of course they still expect a 18% tip on top of the bill. The food was sub par but not terrible. Not bad but, for the price, it should be better. Positives: Awesome location and environment. Amy was lovely and attentive. We never wanted for anything. The filet was awesome. The grilled lobster were very well done. Perfectly cooked and tasty. The old fashioned was really good. The artichoke hearts were perfectly done. Negatives: The menu says 2 lobster tails... I got three (small) halves, 1.5 lobster tails. The gnocchi was not done very well, dry inside and odd flavor. It looked great... but it wasn't. They took it off the bill, which was nice. The garlic green beans were inedible... so much garlic, way too much garlic. So. Not bad but, for the price, it should be better. read more

IMO the food is overpriced but in Crested Butte and there are only a few restaurants in town. A burger is $20, a frozen veggie patty is an extra $3. Expect to pay $30-60/pp. The food was overly salty. Even the salad dressing. I left with chapped lips it was that salty. The service saved the day. I remember the Wooden Nickel of years ago, with fabulous prime rib at a decent price. Unfortunately, this ain't it. The only prime rib is a weekend special of bison at a cool $59. The prime rib sandwich is now a skirt steak sandwich, chewy and tough and, at medium rare, so dark we couldn't visually distinguish between the steak and the portobello mushroom (the mushroom was tastier and easier to chew). The tables were so close together that I had to ask diners next to me to move their water glasses so they wouldn't be knocked over. The draught beers were ... meh. The good news: the service was cheerful and attentive. Owners, step up to the plate: you're putting your staff in awful positions. read more
